Hi all!

Today I am not only very very very late, but also the layout is slighty mess! I apologise profusely for that. The plan was that this Issue 251 would be the nice new all shiny and pretty looking “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” in a complete new design. But unfortunately that didn’t work. All went well until I wanted to send it and then the Spam Filter of the commercial E-Mail sender I use to reduce the spam suspiciousness of the e-zine refused to send the mail because the formatting added so much in size that the mail was too big. So now you get the old layout but not as normal because I used an inbetween version. Apologies that the newsletter arrives so late, but hiccups are unavoidable with a big redesign like that.

Depsite the bank holiday, this is a relatively busy weekend. Not one but TWO Mad Hatter’s Parties will take place this weekend and I know what I will have a look at both. If you have children you have a good excuse to go to all the Egg Hunts as well, if you don’t have children…. borrow some! :-)

On Saturday I will go to the Mad Hatter’s Party in Phoenix Park. Chesterfield Avenue will be closed and the party is promised to be big. I want to see it. If the weather is good, I will probably go to the Trim Hot Air Ballon Fiesta (www.trimfiesta.com) because there will be a Night Glow event from 21:15 with a Fireworks afterwards. Sounds great.

On Sunday I will go to the Mad Hatter’s Party on Mount Merrion and afterwards will probably goto Farmleigh House for the Easter event and Food Market there. In the evening you will find me in Gardiner Street Church where I do the sound engineering for the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir every week. This week a choir from the US will be singing with us, but unfortunately I don’t know any details about that yet. Just come over and give it a try. It starts at 19:30. You don’t have to be very religious to come to that mass!

On Monday I might go to the Trim Ballon Fiesta during the day to see the balloons in day light or I will go to Farmleigh House if I won’t make it on Sunday.

On Tuesday check out the Milk & Cookies Stories and the Dublintellectual Lecture.

And next Friday is “In Händel’s Day”. I will miss it because at the time of the performance in Temple Bar, I will still write next week’s Event Guide, but maybe you can make it! :-)

TRIM HOT AIR BALLOON FIESTA 2012
Sat 07 – Mon 09 April: 07:00-19:00 – Castle Grounds, Trim Castle, Trim, Co. Meath
A great event that is taking place a bit outside of Dublin, but the organisers offered some tickets and it is a big spectacular that can’t happen just everywhere, so I know that some of you are interested in that and therefore I am today even including a Co. Meath event. The Trim Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2012 is Ireland’s biggest Hot Air Balloon Festival. Over 20 gigantic balloons including Sonic, Darth Vadar and Action Man, will be the main focus and in addition there are many other events: Skydiving, Paramotoring, 3D Kites & Model Balloons. A Magical Night Glow where balloons are lit in time with choreographed music and complimented by fire-jugglers, a light show and LED robots. And on the ground there will be an artisan food markets, Falconry, Old McDonalds’ Petting Farm, Top Gear Bugatti Veyron Experience, Jet Fighter Simulator, Face-painting, Inflatable Wonderland, Vintage Carousel and lots more. You can certainly see the balloons from a distance, but if you want to get the full festival experience, there is an admission charge of EUR 10 per day (EUR 7.50 for students and under 12s are free). The event takes place over the Easter Weekend and more information can be found here www.trimfiesta.com and www.facebook.com/trimfiesta I got lots and lots of competition entries and would have loved to get you all free tickets. And for the rest of you? Tickets will be available at the entrance to the event area, so you can still go to it! I will definitely be there!

PEATS – WORLD OF ELECTRONICS CLOSED ALL SHOPS
A major blow to the electronics retailer landscape was announced on Tuesday. All eleven shops of “Peats – The world of Electronics” have been closed with immediate effect. The company has been trading in Dublin since 1934 when Brigit and William Peat opened the first shop in Parnell St. The relatively recently modernised shop in Parnell Street was probably still the biggest, other shops were at College Green, in Rathmines, Blanchardstown and in Swords. ONE CITY, ONE BOOK 2012 – DUBLINERS BY JAMES JOYCE
I mentioned it last week, but there are sooo many events taking place in the context of this festival, that I have to refer to it again: For the seventh year, Dublin celebrates a book that is connected to Dublin through the “One City, One Book 2012” festival. The festival takes place in April every year and is accompanied by a series of events. The chosen book for April 2012 is “Dubliners” by James Joyce and is designed to encourage everyone in the city to read the same book during April. DÚN LAOGHAIRE BATHS PAINTED FOR FIRST TIME IN OVER 100 YEARS
The Dun Laoghaire Baths were once a very popular outdoor swimming pool/bath at the seafront in Dun Laoghaire. But the baths closed in 1997 and were since neglected. Many ideas were generated and proposals were made what to do with the baths, but nothing ever happened. Now, 100 years since the last time, the Dun Laoghaire Baths got a lick of paint. Why now? The “Dulux Let’s Colour Project”, a global initiative which provided free paint to 250 community projects in Ireland last year, selected the baths this year for repainting. DRAW TIN TIN – EXHIBITION

A few months back Toronto hosted a Draw Tin Tin exhibition. This prompted the Little Green Street Gallery to host a show giving Ireland the chance to interpret the cartoon explorer. Artists are free to interpret the cult hero in any way they felt. There are no restrictions to the size, medium or the concept to which they used to bring him to life. With over 50 artists participating ranging from photography, illustration, sculpture, mixed media, collage, you will see all the work being submitted.

MadArt Gallery is inviting to Estonian artist Ulla Juske’s first personal show in Dublin. Gatecrasher is a thought provoking story about unknown figure invading the artist’s personal space. She describes “I received a postcard, it was addressed to me, but was sent anonymously. It had a picture of me walking on the street in the front and a philosophical text (later learned to be a quote by Ludwig Wittgenstein) in the back. I received a similar postcard every day for a month. There was no harm done to in any way. Yet somebody was watching, following and photographing me. Somebody was gatecrashing my life…” Eeeek!

GOOD FRIDAY
Easter is coming up and Friday is “Good Friday”. Christians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and in Ireland this is an odd day. Odd because it is the one d ay of the year when shops and pubs are not allowed to sell alcohol. In recent years more and more loop holes are tested and one of them is that it is permitted to sell alcohol with food and last year I saw a situation where 12 bottles of beer were sold with half a chicken.
Important for employees is the fact that Good Friday is, surprisingly in predominantly Catholic Ireland, not a public holiday. So formally it is a normal working day. Nevertheless there are a number of companies that give the day off.
Because the pubs are closed, the entertainment options on that day are very limited.

HAPPY EASTER
Happy Easter to all of you! I hope you will have a nice long weekend and enjoy some cool events. If you had thought about doing your shopping today, double check if your preferred shops are open as some supermarkets close on Sunday and instead are open again on Monday. Many shops in the City Centre and in some of the shopping centres around Dublin are open on both days, but Dundrum Town Centre, for example, is closed completely on Sunday and similarly this could be the case for others. So checking if your preferred shop is open, might not do any harm.

1916 EASTER RISING COMMEMORATION EVENT – GPO

The Easter Rising in 1916 took place from 24 Apr until 30 Apr (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_Rising) but instead of commemorating in on that date, it is commemorated at Easter because the 24 Apr 1916 was Easter Monday. For many years only Republicans celebrated this day and it took until 2006 until a regular official event took place. Since then, and building up to the 100th anniversary in 2016, every year a military parade has taken place. A military parade in a Western European country in 2012 seems rather anachronistic and while I think that the Easter Rising commemoration is an important event, a more modern celebration might be more fitting.
The event at the General Post Office (GPO) on Monday will run only from 12:00-12:30, but if you want to attend, you are asked to be there at 11:30 already. Streets (closed between Parnell Street and the North Quays at Bachelors Walk/Eden Quay) will be closed in the area already from 05:00 until 15:00, but LUAS and local access will be maintained.
It is a military ceremony with prayers of remembrance, a reading of the Proclamation and the laying of a wreath by the President and will conclude with a fly-past by the Air Corps.
The ceremony will be attended by the President, the Taoiseach and the Minister for Defence.

On Easter Sunday in Deerpark, all is not quite what it seems as a white rabbit, a mad Hatter and a little girl called Alice host a most unusual tea party complete with a tea cup ride, giant chess, croquet, a hat walk, balloons, an Easter trail and a host of surprises on picnic tables under a tree.
The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is one of the most famous scenes from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. To celebrate Easter and the full bloom of spring, DLR Events invite young and old to put on their maddest hat and come to the Mad Hatters Tea Party. Characters in costume from that famous scene in Alice in Wonderland such as the White Rabbit, Alice, and the Mad Hatter himself will be there to greet ‘guests’ to their very special tea party on long wooden tables with pretty red and white check table cloths under a tree. Take a ride in a teacup or be a pawn in a giant chess game, have a game of croquet and with ‘Make & Do’ for the little ones, a great free day out is guaranteed for all the family.
Guests will be encouraged to dress up as one of the Alice in Wonderland characters, and wear the maddest hat possible. Throughout the day there will be opportunities to show off hats and costumes on the purpose built “Hat walk” – strut your stuff to the sounds of the DLR Events DJ.
Bring a picnic or buy some tea and cakes from the tuck shop and dine at the picnic tables. This year the Mad Hatters Tea Party falls on Easter Sunday so a highlight will be the Easter trail. 1916 EASTER RISING COMMEMORATION – LIBERTY HALL

Separate from the official Easter Rising events at the GPO on Sunday, the North Inner City Folklore Project is holding this non-party-political event.
The event will begin with the re-enactment of the hoisting of the Citizen Army flag, which was raised at Liberty Hall in 1916 by James Connolly and a young fourteen year old girl from Gardiner Street, Molly O’Reilly.
This will be recreated by the grandson of James Connolly, James Connolly-Herron, and Molly O’Reilly’s niece Ciara Gallagher. A colour party in the period uniforms of the Citizen Army and Cumann na mBan will accompany them.
The crowd will then parade to Lower Sean McDermott Street led by pipers and people carrying photographs of the leaders of the Easter Rising.
At 13:00 at Lower Sean McDermott Street facing Our Lady of Lourdes Church,
Constance Corcoran, daughter of Molly O’Reilly who’s, mother was a member of the City Hall garrison and Mrs Steenson, whose mother was a member of the GPO/Clery’s garrison will unveil the plaque for Captain Sean Heuston of the Irish Volunteers. Welker holds doctoral degrees in musicology and medicine, and practises as a psychotherapist in addition to his teaching and research as a musicologist. He is renowned as a scholar of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century music in Europe and has published widely on Italian, French and German instrumental and vocal music of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Much of his recent research explores the relationship between music and the cognitive sciences.

ONE CITY, ONE BOOK – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
A whole range of events as part of the One City, One Book 2012 month will take place in Farmleigh House and all events are free, but require the booking of tickets. Because these events are usually quite popular, I will include here the whole list of events and if you are interested in any of the events, make sure that you request your tickets as soon as possible. Balloonatics Theatre Company presents ‘The Dead’: the premiere of a new dramatic adaptation and an original musical score based on Joyce’s story and featuring Paul O ‘ Hanrahan, actor, Michael Holohan, composer and Niamh Browne, soprano.
++ Sat 21 Apr: 15:00 – Joyce and His Ramblings in the Phoenix Park
Dr. John McCullen, Chief Park Superintendent discusses Joyce’s connections with the Phoenix Park.
++ Sat 28 Apr: 15:00 – Dublin, Distilleries and ‘The Dead’
A talk by Frank Shovlin, Senior Lecturer of Irish Literature in English at the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool and author of Journey Westward: Joyce, Dubliners and the Literary Revival, to be published this spring by Liverpool University Press.
++ Sun 29 Apr: 15:00 – ‘Joyce and Chapelizod’
Actor Barry McGovern, a resident of Chapelizod, will discuss the Joyce family’s association with the Chapelizod area and will discuss ‘A Painful Case’, ‘Finnegans Wake’ and Joyce’s reference to the Phoenix Park Murders.

CULTURE AND THE ECONOMY – EUROPE DAY

The Temple Bar Cultural Trust is inviting to a half-day conference on Culture and the Economy on Europe Day 09 May 2012. This event is a great opportunity to gain insights into new thinking and research around measuring the value of cultural and creative activity. It will also be a great opportunity to hear about successful examples of cultural and creative enterprises combining talent and technology to great effect in growing audiences and revenues. Speakers are Irish economist Finbarr Bradley, David Throsby, author of The Culture of Innovation and The Economics of the Performing Arts and Professor John O’ Hagan from Trinity College Dublin. Broadcaster and economist George Lee will chair the event.

LIDL/ALDI CUSTOMERS FATTER – NONSENSICAL RESEARCH AND BAD BAD JOURNALISM
This week the Irish Independent was the winner when it came to bad journalism. They published an article entitled “Customers of Lidl and Aldi heavier and fatter than other supermarket shoppers – study”. I have no doubt that the journalist correctly used the information available to him, but the “bad journalism” tag he earns for not questioning the results in the slightest. The study, it turns out, was conducted in Paris in 2007 and 2008, more than four years ago, but it was indirectly implied in the way the article was published that the results would be current and would apply to shoppers in Ireland as well. It totally ignores that shopping behaviour is in a significant way dependent on the social status of the buyer and that in many countries social status and body shape are interdependent.
From my own experience I can certainly say that the results do not at all apply to Germany or Ireland. Have you ever been in the Lidl in Moore Street, with its predominantly Eastern European customer base? Young and slim is the best description of the majority of customers.
Since the article was published in the Health News section of the Irish Independent, I would have expected some critical discussion of the results not just a regurgitation of a four year old study from a vastly different country. Disappointing, Irish Independent!
