Hi all!

Last week’s big event related news was the surprise cancellation of the People’s Festival just 14 hours before the Festival was mean to start. Many were very disappointed about the cancellation and a lot of confusion (and speculation) resulted from it. I only found out around midnight from the great Darragh Doyle. Darragh is a loyal Dublin Event Guide Subscriber and huge supporter and he has his own Event related website. Read more about him in the Dublin News section! More about the events and circumstances around the People’s Festival can be found in the “This is Odd!” section at the end of this newsletter.

[ad]

It seems to me that the list of events I find is getting longer and longer every week and the result is that I spend more and more time on writing this e-zine/newsletter. This is bad for me AND bad for me. Last week I sent the newsletter to all 9500+ of you at 16:30 and then the sending process was delayed for unforeseen technical reasons until 17:30 in some cases. That is MUCH too late and I am fully aware of it. So, my big goal for the coming weeks is to bring this time forward. I would prefer to have it with you at around 13:00 at the latest, but I am not sure yet how to achieve that. Another thing that I need to consider is that between now and the middle of October, I will be away for a total 3 weekends. I will make sure that you will get the Dublin Event Guide every week, but I might have to shorten some sections, reduce the events or drop occasionally a whole section (e.g. Dublin News or This is Odd!). If you have other suggestions or preferences, let me know at dublineventguide@gmail.com Next weekend, I will be in London, so I will try the slightly shorter version of the Dublin Event Guide already next week.

Less than 500 until we arrive at the next (intermediary) goal of 10,000 Dublin Event Guide subscribers. :-) Help me to get there! The website for the Dublin Event Guide is at www.dublineventguide.com where your friends can subscribe to the weekly newsletter and the same is possible on the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on LIKE when you are there.) Your friends can sign up as well by sending an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject SUBSCRIBE DEG if they prefer that.

Can you hang up this updated A4 posters in your company, corner shop, school, club?

We now more than 6100 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and it would be really great if we could be as big on Facebook as we are on this distribution list. You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is something I added to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. This week, the video is longer than usually and of a different character. It is more a lecture, but some of you know that I am a certified NLP Master Practitioner and NLP Trainer and it fascinates me to learn and understand how we create our feelings and how our brain functions. The video clip I came across is 22 minutes long and explains a LOT about what is going on in our brain. If you don’t have too much time, have a look at the first half of it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPEdDcs_8ZQ&ob=av3e

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

No donation from any of you again. Hmmm, what can I say! Getting the best Event Guide for free events in the western hemisphere ;-) is seemingly not enough to motivate you to donate a few Euro. You are a tough audience! :-) For the people that have a heart with me go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost I am currently paying from my own pocket.

Luckily, though, a new business sponsor was so nice to help with a donation, the company is Gravitational FX, an Irish Web Design, SEO and Internet Marketing who offer affordable web design and in addition focus on making your website generate business leads and increase goal conversions. Have a look at www.gravitationalfx.ie Thanks Gravitational FX!

To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – I am giving 25 hours every week for no pay, so that YOU get the Dublin Event Guide every week. I need you to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid! You can give much more than EUR 12 or you can give less, but EUR 12 is a big help for me and not too much for you. If you have a company that would like to sponsor the Event Guide talk to me!
www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here to start your purchase, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

The coming weekend is full of events and there is definitely something for everyone. In Malahide the first time free, the Salute Military Vehicle and Re-enactment show will take place, if you want more culture and nature, then the Dublin Garden Square Day is for you, if (Irish) music is your thing, then the Seisun for Somalia in Grafton Street will make you happy. Photography? Go to the People’s Photography Exhibition. You want to learn more? Go to Which Course 2011 in the RDS. Animation is shown at the Blackrock Festival and the Print Museum has a Family Day as well. And THIS is only a small subsection of the Sat+Sun events.

I didn’t even mention the Street Feast, Blackrock Family Day, a variety of events on Sunday in the Botanic Gardens or Meditation on Sunday evening.

Who could honestly not find something in that impressive list?

I will definitely have a look at the Which Course exhibition and would like to go to Malahide to the Salute show. The People’s Photography exhibition is a must as well, but after that I can’t do much more. Luckily a good few of the events are taking place on Saturday AND Sunday.

I will be away next weekend, so if there are any events you want to tell me about, they have to be with my by Tuesday!! Keep that in mind!

GREAT PEOPLE IN DUBLIN
We all know that Dublin is small and it sometimes feels that everybody knows everybody, I am sure you can imagine that the non-commercial “event blogging” world in Ireland is small as well and since this Dublin Event Guide is part of that world, the people in the “event blogging” world know each other and importantly support each other. Today I want to mention a few who are friends, but as well supporters at times. The best known is the brilliantly connected and super nice Darragh Doyle. Darragh is well liked and is definitely the one and only true connector (someone who connects people to people) in Dublin. Darragh is behind the Event website www.yay.ie and is supported by two other friends of mine and wonderful people: Stephanie Francis and Niamh Smith. Yay.ie reports about country wider events, some are free others aren’t and in addition you will find a lot of competitions on yay.ie. Have a look at the site when you get a chance! yay.ie
And while I am at it, I might give another “shout out” to another trio if Event bloggers: Over at www.dublinculture.ie/ Dave Madden, Claire Bradley and Nina Shiel write about events with a strong emphasis on theatre related events. Check them out as well, you might find some more interesting bits about culture in Dublin.

LAST CHANCE TO HELP ME WITH THIS
I mentioned a few weeks ago, that I need 200 people to sign up with the consumer survey panel at clk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=83237&a=1719778&g=17705998
because the people at MySURVEY promised to give away a iPad or another tablet to the person that gets 200 signups before the 31 August. Some tablet computer would help me getting more efficient when I prepare the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” earlier in the week, so if you like influencing advertisement and products by sharing your opinion, please sign up with MySurvey here clk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=83237&a=1719778&g=17705998 Thanks! :-)Oh and before I forget, you get rewarded for answering these surveys as well, you don’t have to do it for free!

MySURVEY – Get rewarded for taking part in surveys that help companies to improve their products or the information they provide. You will get paid for your help and can get PayPal vouchers or donate the reward to a charity AND you make your opinion count! DUBLIN CONTEMPORARY – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Dublin Contemporary 2011 is a major large-scale exhibition of emerging and established contemporary visual art taking place between September 6th and October 31st 2011. It is one of the most ambitious exhibitions ever staged in Ireland – a city-wide effort with more than 100 Irish and international artists and lots of venues. Dublin Contemporary is now looking for volunteers who help with a variety of jobs for a few days or up to 3 months. You should be passionate and interested in the opportunity. Check www.dublincontemporary.com/about/volunteers to fill out the short form or email volunteer@dublincontemporary.com.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

GROUND ZERO 360 – THE EXHIBITION – COLLINS BARACKS
18 Aug – 01 Oct: National Museum, Collins Barracks, Dublin
On September 11, 2001, New York City was shaken to its core when two jet airliners crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. In the wake of the chaos, New York-based Irish photographer Nicola McClean tried to capture the confusion and panic that surrounded her. In 2011, McClean brings her stunning collection of images to the public for the first time. Through harrowing visuals, chilling audio clips and a unique panoramic installation, Ground Zero 360 invites you to step into the past and feel what eight million New Yorkers were feeling in the days that followed the attacks. Find out more at www.groundzero360.org or at the National Museums website www.museum.ie/en/exhibition/ground-zero-360.aspx

SEISUN FOR SOMALIA – CONCERN FUNDRAISER – GRAFTON STREET
Sat 27 Aug: 10:30-19:30 – junction of Grafton Street and St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2. A Seisiún for Somalia (i.e. an Irish Music Session for Somalia) will take place on Saturday. Over 100 Irish traditional musicians and dancers will be performing in Grafton Street to help Concern save lives in the horn of Africa: Concern’s East Africa Appeal is targeting the urgent humanitarian needs of more than 10 mio people in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. The money collected at “Seisiún for Somalia” goes to the East Africa Appeal. Sounds like a good event.
But WHY oh, WHY can’t Concern support these fundraising events by at least mentioning it on their website and/or facebook page. It can’t be THAT difficult to support the 100 people by at least supporting their efforts of letting the world know.

All exhibitors need to have set up by 11:00 and I expect that the exhibition will at least continue until 17:00, maybe even a little later. THE COLD 100 – WHELAN’S
Sat 27 Aug: 23:30 (free until 22:30) . Whelan’s, 25 Wexford St, Dublin 2
The Cold 100 is a band I am trying to see and hear for WEEKS and I still haven’t managed. I heard some recorded songs from them and loved what I heard, so hopefully they will do lots more gigs so that I can finally catch them somewhere. You have a chance on Saturday (unfortunately I can’t make it).
But someone needs to explain the Whelan’s “free admission” thing to me. The Cold 100 are performing in The Midnight Hour series of events and the website says “Free before 22:30, Club entry applies after 22:30 (Thur/Fri/Sat).” But the gig only has doors at 23:30. Does that mean you need to get into Whelan’s before 22:30 and then just stay in a different area until the doors open at 23:30 for the gig?

DUBLIN CITY TRIATHLON – PHOENIX PARK
Sun 28 Aug: 08:00- 14:00 – Phoenix Park.
The Dublin City Triathlon takes place again this Sunday. It starts very early with a 1500m swim in the Liffey at the Garda Boat Club (Chapelizod Rd, Islandbridge, just outside Phoenix Park), then a 40km cycle in laps around Phoenix Park follows and finally a 10km run in Phoenix Park will conclude the event. A shorter Triathlon is available for less trained athletes. 930 people will take place in the Triathlon and all of the Irish Triathlon elite is expected to participate. Obviously this is not an event for everybody, so the reason for mentioning it here, is because you might want to watch the athletes and cheer them on. The best place for it is near the Garda Boat Club. The Piranha Triathlon Club is organising the Dublin City Triathlon.
To facilitate the event a number of gates and roads in and around Phoenix Park will be closed for traffic between 07:00 and 15:00. www.dublincitytriathlon.com
I volunteered a few times at this Triathlon and it is really a great and well organised event, but I was always glad that I was a volunteer and not a participant swimming in the Liffey at 08:00 in the morning. :-)

STREET FEAST
Sun 28 Aug: Anywhere!
Street Feast is a day of local lunches across Ireland on 28 August, hosted by you and your neighbours. They can be anywhere really – out on the street, in a local park or in your front garden. The purpose is to celebrate your local community and meet new people who live near you. It is a great idea, but I think it still needs to filter through. On the website streetfeast.ie/ only 16 Street Feasts are listed for Dublin (and at least 3 are organised by restaurants or with another event). There could be many more that are not officially “declared”, but wouldn’t it be great if there were hundreds!? Maybe just get together with your friends this year and plan a proper Street Feast for next year!? ;-)

Everybody is invited to come and join the festivities. However, I was not able to find a definite confirmation that the event is free, so be aware of that. The public invitation and the programme can be found at www.wmcireland.com/onam-invite.html

———Pre-Announcements————————

This section contains events that will happen in the future. Some of them require free tickets and it is mentioned where this is the case. Put the events in your diary and for the ticketed events hurry to request your tickets:

SOUL + RHYTHM&BLUES + ELVIS – SUGAR CLUB
Sat 03 Sept: 20:00-23:00 – The Sugar Club, Lwr Leeson St., Dublin 2
Some of you know that I sing in the backing choir of the best Elvis Tribute Band. Kevin Doyle heads this band in the role of Elvis Presley and he is just brilliant. But there has been a past that had nothing to do with Elvis and it is time to go back to the roots and mix all influences a bit. On Sat Kevin and the Band will be in the Sugar Club for a Soul + Rhythm&Blues + a sprinkling of Elvis gig. An 18 piece band with full brass section and backing choir will perform for you and all is free. I normally would DEFINITELY be there as well, BUT next weekend I am in London for a training course. Darn! I hope, though, that many of you will be at the gig and will tell me all about it afterwards! :-) Put it in your calendar, it will be a super gig! www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=250679961619740

PHOTOVISION TRADE ROADSHOW – CROKE PARK
Tues 06 Sept: 11:00-18:00 – Croke Park Stadium, Hogan Suite, Jones Road, Dublin 3
This is a tradeshow and therefore not an event that is suitable for everyone, but I know that a good few of you will be interested. Have a look at the exhibitor list and find via this link as well the vast amount of free seminars: www.forwardevents.co.uk/roadshows/dublin/exhibitors-list.html Tickets are free for trade visitors, but you should register now!

PEOPLE’S FESTIVAL CANCELLATION – DUN LAOGHAIRE
I had planned to share with you here what I see as the reasons for the problems with and ultimate cancellation of the People’s Festival, but my explanation got too long to include it here. So instead, you can find it at my blog (which is an occasional and infrequently blog). Check it here if you are interested: www.joergsteegmueller.com/2011/08/26/peoples-festival-cancellation/

Have a great week and enjoy all those free events! Net week I will be in London for a training course for the whole weekend, but – as always – you WILL get a Dublin Event Guide. However it might be a slightly slimmer version.

Take care,

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
