Dublin Event Guide 803: Less or more culture for you? — Colours Boat Races, Five Lamps Arts Festival, Mud Island Community Garden, Not My Bag – Film Launch

March 25th, 2023

Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

Less or more culture for you?

Colours Boat Races, Five Lamps Arts Festival, Mud Island Community Garden, Not My Bag – Film Launch

Hi!!

How are you doing today? Is is another weekend and like every weekend there are plenty of free events that I have collated for you and listed below. (AND I had a technical problem again, which delayed me. ?

How is your “event consumption” going? I was talking to a friend last week who told me that she is going to a LOT less events now than before the “Great Lockdown” a few years ago.

Do you experience the same? Maybe we got used to consuming less culture? Maybe we got a little lazier? Or maybe it was just a break in the routine that impacted our weekends? Or maybe you are not finding the events anymore that you were always interested in?

Whatever the reason is, if you feel that you are going to less events, I suggest that you try to find out your personal reason for it and then check if that is really what you want.

It would be a pity if in a few years you find out that you SHOULD have used the time better!

One problem that this inward looking will not solve is the regrettable fact that there are a good few less free events than before the lockdown. As you know, I am keeping a close eye on all free events and I see a lot less events now. Especially free gigs in pubs largely disappeared in the key venues, like Whelan’s, Grand Social, Sin E, Workman’s Club, etc.

So what can we do? There are two options! We can go to different places or change the events we go to or we will have to pay. Whatever is right for you, YOU need to decide. But I will make sure that you will always be informed about the high-quality cultural events that happen in Dublin! And Dublin is ALWAYS busy! ;-)

Donations in March:
EUR 266

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

The great people that donated last week were Michael, Claire, Mitzy, Noele, Niamh, Cathy, Jean, Gabriela, Ann, Fionnula. You are amazing! Thank you sooooo much! :-) Your donation will keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and will motivate me to continue week after week.I appreciate you and your support!

The 800th anniversary donations were EUR 250 and for now, I keep that separate from the donations for the monthly bills. The reason for that is that I plan to use that money to fix and modernise the Dublin Event Guide website. It really needs it and I was postponing that for a long time of the cost that are not covered by the normal donations.

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

++ Exhibition: “Borders: Studying Margins To Question The World”
until 05 June 2023 – daily 10:00-17:00 – EPIC, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: General Museum Admission
Borders are to be found everywhere: in the shadows of the walls being built all over the world, on the fingerprints of travellers and asylum seekers, or in the everyday lives of cross-border workers. Borders change and move within time and space, depending on political and economic events. Nowadays, they emerge across diverse places and in different shapes, impacting our individual and collective lives.
Although we are meant to be in a globalised world, borders are being reactivated and strengthened for some people while they open and disappear for others.

Designed by the Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration (French National Museum of the History of Immigration), this exhibition draws on historic, geographical, economic and human perspectives. It is an invitation to deepen our understanding of how borders are constructed and evolve, beyond the dichotomy between open or closed, nationals and foreigners, economic migrants and political refugees. The cartographic work raises the issue of orders of magnitude, of proportions in representations, and highlights the relativity of data.

This exhibition will be on show in EPIC until 05 June and admission is included in the normal admission charges. epicchq.com/exhibition/borders-studying-margins-to-question-the-world/

And there is more…

+++ Five Lamps Art Festival
For the 16th time, the Five Lamps Arts Festival will take place in the North Inner City Area around the Five Lamps, a street lantern at a 5-street junction in Amiens Street, Dublin 1. The festival will run from 13-31 March and will come with lots of events and many of them are free. The website is at fivelampsarts.ie and the programme can be found in PDF format at fivelampsarts.ie/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Five-Lamps-Art-Festival-2023-Brochure.pdf

+++ LOW PRICED BOOKS (WITH FREE DELIVERY)
Book Depository is the place where you can buy low priced books, usually for better prices than on Amazon. And Book Depository always delivers for free. By buying books from Book Depository you will also help the Dublin Event Guide for no additional cost to you, so two good reasons in one. Use this link: shor.by/BookDepository
  .

+++ Bad News: Natural History Museum (a.k.a. Dead Zoo) to close for 5 years
The much loved Natural History Museum in Merrion Street was only re-opened in August after a 2 year closure for renovations and now it has emerged that later this year the museum will close again for further renovations and this time the closure could take up to 5 years. www.thejournal.ie/dublin-dead-zoo-6019318-Mar2023/
My recommendation is to go rather sooner than later to visit it once again, especially if you have kids. (Independent from their current age, your kids might be finished with college and have kids of their own by the time the museum re-opens again. ;-)  )

+++ Lenten Vespers with Choirs
In St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral Vespers (sung masses) will take place every Tuesday and Friday. On Tuesday at 17:30 it is with the St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Girls Choir and on Fridays at 17:30 with the Palestrina Choir.

+++ The Big (Easter) Dig – School of Archaeology
Phoenix Park Visitor Centre is inviting to an archaeology event for kids over Easter. On Sunday 09 April and Monday 10 April 6-12 year olds can dig for fossils and other treasures in 40min long sessions. Details are on the poster here
www.facebook.com/thephoenixpark/photos/2146332582222898/ Booking (via e-mail) is required.

+++ TCD Talks  & TCD Health and Sports Week
With a campus in the middle of the city, Trinity College talks and at times also events are in most cases open to the public. The talks can be found at www.tcd.ie/news_events/events/?day=01&month=04&year=2023&search=week and on the subsequent pages. SOME of the events are in the listings above, but only some.
The details about the Health and Sports Week where also non-students are welcome to a range of events is at
www.tcd.ie/healthytrinity/HealthAndSportsWeek/EventsCalendar.php Booking (via e-mail) is required.

+++ Discover Dublin Docklands App
Dublin City has a new app that allows us to discover iconic Dublin landmarks such as the famine statues, the CHQ building and more.
The app is available to download for free via doorsintodocklands.com/
After you got the app, you can point your phone at the landmarks and this will prompt the related images, videos and stories to pop up.
The app uses Augmented Reality (AR), a mix of 3D graphics, animation and audio, to immerse users in the story of the city.
Several colourful characters from history will also appear in AR to tell their tales. These include Captain Bligh who surveyed Dublin Bay in the 1800s and Maggie Doyle, who was a docker’s daughter.

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get!

Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
