Dublin Event Guide 782: Halloween is here! – Stokerland: Victorian fun park, Fingal Festival of Fire: Fireworks, Fireworks & Otherworld Festival

Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

Halloween is here!

Stokerland: Victorian fun park, Fingal Festival of Fire: Fireworks, Fireworks & Otherworld Festival

How are you doing today?

Every year, Halloween is super busy for events! Dublin City is running lots of Halloween festivals in the different parts of Dublin and most events are created explicitly for the kids and teenagers.

Events for grown ups also take place, BUT since the lockdowns I definitely see a decrease in the number of free events. So these events are then for other publications, because – as you know – the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” focuses on events with no admission charge.

This focus is not chosen because I think everything in life (or in events) should be free. Instead the driver was always to help event organisers to run free events to get the word out and for an appreciative audience to find these free events.

There is, for example, one pub that has a lot of gigs and I often get from them an e-mail about gigs, but the only gigs they promote are the ones that cost an admission charge. They do not promote the free gigs because there is a bigger incentive to get people to come to a gig that costs than to a gig that is free.

So when I started this newsletter many many years ago the purpose was to help these somewhat undervalued free events to get the audience they deserve.

Last week I had some doubts that we will reach the donation level required for the Dublin Event Guide by the end of the month, but thanks to four great supporters we made it and there is even a little bit to make it into the next month. All donations are used to pay the bills for the Dublin Event Guide. My time and energy and passion for this newsletter is completely free! ;-)

Thanks so much to everyone that ever did donate and also thanks to the people that will donate in the future. Without your huge support this weekly publication wouldn’t be around anymore and lots of people think this would be a loss! :-)

Donations in November:
EUR 29

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

The great people that donated last week were Sabina, Sarah, Eanna and Valerie! Thank you so much! Your donation will keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and will motivate me to continue week after week. I appreciate you and your support!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses. The first of those bonuses is described above.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 3. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ Ghosts, Ghouls and “Goodie Glover Day”: The Irish Origins of Halloween 28/29/3031 October – 16:00 – EPIC, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: EUR 17.50 (Age: 12+)
Join us as we leave daylight behind and explore the darker side of our mythologies and histories at EPIC!
Halloween is fast approaching and it’s time to delve back in the origins of Irish traditions and explore how Samhain became Halloween. Irish ghost stories and funerary traditions travelled with the Irish diaspora and often became entangled with local customs to form entirely new traditions over the centuries.
Learn more about The Dullahan (“dark man”) a malevolent harbinger of death who served as the inspiration for the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow, or how the local practice of burying corpses with a stake through the heart influenced the writings of Irish emigrant Bram Stoker, author of Dracula.
Uncover the tragic story of “Goody Annie Glover” the unfortunate Irish woman who became the last person hanged for witchcraft in Boston in 1688 and how the influx of Irish immigrants, who brought their traditions and folktales, helped shape the story of jack-o’-lanterns in America.
This ticket includes entry to EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and a bespoke tour. Book at epicchq.com/event/ghosts-ghouls-and-goodie-glover-day-the-irish-origins-of-halloween/

+++ Notorious Irish Murder Mystery Camp (Age: 7-12)
Wed 02 + Thu 03 November – 09:00-15:30 daily – EPIC, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: EUR 65
EPIC’s detectives are trying to solve a case, and we are enlisting only the most brave and fearsome recruits to join us at this 2-day camp as we dive into the darker side of Irish history.
Uncover those figures who made a notorious name for the Irish around the world, like legendary Wild West figure Billy the Kid; fearsome pirate of the Caribbean Anne Bonny; William Lamport, the Wexford man behind the mask of Zorro; Bootlegger, bank robber and gangster, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and more.
You will work in teams to build case studies of the suspects, as you hear the tales of the Irish that have challenged and sometimes even changed the law. This camp is for ages 7–12 and parents do not need to accompany children to the camp. The ticket includes the 2-day camp and an EPIC Camp T-shirt. epicchq.com/event/notorious-irish-murder-mystery-camp/

And there is more…

+++ Dublin Marathon
On Sunday. this year’s Dublin Marathon will take place. The event starts from 08:40 and the start is at Fitzwilliam Square. The Finish line is at Merrion Square and you can cheer on people along the course, which is very much appreciated by the runners.
If you are not participating but just do your normal thing on Sunday, check the route map, because large parts of Dublin will be closed off for traffic and the bus service will be severely affected, so check how you can avoid the Marathon routes on the map here: irishlifedublinmarathon.ie/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Route-Map-2022.jpg

+++ Housing Unlocked Exhibition
The “Housing Unlocked” exhibition is described as a celebration of innovation, optimism and imagination. Eight architect-led proposals will be presented that are intended to unlock the housing potential in our villages, towns and cities.
Housing Unlocked is a partnership between the Irish Architecture Foundation and The Housing Agency.
The exhibition will be open from 14 Oct-18 Dec and from 02-21 Jan (Tues-Fri: 12:00-17:00, Sat: 14:00-17:00). It will take place in the former Science Gallery in Pearse Street (Naughton Institute of TCD). Admission is free. housingunlocked.ie/

+++ LOW PRICED BOOKS (WITH FREE DELIVERY)
Book Depository is the place where you can buy low priced books, usually for better prices than on Amazon. And Book Depository always delivers for free. By buying books from Book Depository you will also help the Dublin Event Guide for no additional cost to you, so two good reasons in one. Use this link: shor.by/BookDepository
  .

+++ LOTS of Trinity College Talks
Trinity College is offering really interesting talks and LOTS of them. There are so many that I couldn’t include them all, so please check out www.tcd.ie/news_events/events/ and if you check before Monday, then click on “NEXT WEEK” towards the top to see all the events that take place next week.

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or somethign completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes doen further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get!

Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
