Hi all!

Very interesting! You remember that the Dublin Event Guide was recently featured on Capital D, the RTE 1 TV Programme about events in Dublin. Subsequent to the broadcast the number of new sign-ups for this weekly newsletter/e-zine grew significantly and stayed quite high until the day the Capital D programme was taken off the RTE Player, which happens typically about 3 weeks after the broadcast.

Why do I tell you that? Well, going by the significantly larger number of sign-ups while the programme was available, it is clear that once people find out about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), they are very interested and many join our Dublin Event Guide Community. Capital D helped hugely and thanks again to Anne Cassin and the production team, but how can we keep the momentum going? The last 3 weeks showed that there are thousands of people that would benefit from knowing about all the free events in Dublin. Before Capital D we were 8750, today we are 9250. 500 people in just 4 weeks! Wow! If we could keep that up we would nearly each 12000 readers by Christmas! Traditionally the August Bank Holiday weekend is a little quieter. Many Irish people are leaving Dublin to visit their family outside Dublin and we foreigners are not much different. ;-) So, less festivals and events, but nevertheless, it is quite a busy weekend and week.

What will I do? Well, the Bray Summer Festival is still continuing and this weekend the Greystones Roots & Americana Festival caught my attention. I will try to go to some gigs on Sat or Sun. On Saturday the Intercultural Family Day could be interesting for you, especially if you have kids. And on Sunday, parents should look at the Farmleigh House Family Fitness Day. For me the Dublin Flea Market might win out and if the weather is not great, I will go to the Science Gallery (I wrote about the new exhibition about two weeks ago.) In the afternoon the Lee Hedley Blues Band might get me to go to the Hard Rock Café.

On Monday the Northside Music Festival is starting with a gig in the beautiful St. Anne’s Park. On Tues The Latin American Summer Screening sounds good, but I will probably not be able to go.

On Wednesday make sure – if you can – that you check out the OPW First Wednesday, where OPW sites are free to visit! Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle could be on your list! In the evening a very interesting Elevator Pitch Night takes place.

On Thursday the Opera in the Open at the Amphitheatre is starting and will run for the next 4 weeks and on Friday Dun Laoghaire is inviting to “Classical Twist”. Soul Purpose in the Workman’s Club could complete the list.

LOTS of music, hmmmmm, did anybody guess that I love music?? ;-)

SAND SCULPTURES IN DUBLIN CASTLE
Every summer for the last 9 years, a group of artists are building sand sculptures in the courtyard of Dublin Castle for everyone to see. They are amazing pieces of art and talent and I am fascinated every year. The artists started sculpting on 25 July and will get finished around this weekend. Then the sand sculptures are on display until 28 Aug. The theme this year is Compass and you can easily find them. CYCLING ADVENTURE FOR “INDIANA JUNE”
I met Diana June Tansey aka Indiana June a little while ago and she has interesting plans. Diana/Indiana has given up the day job and has decided to leave Dublin on 06 Aug, but not to emigrate in the search for a job. No, “Indiana June” is embarking on a solo cycling adventure and she’s leaving all of the important decisions up to a group of online followers, which could include you!
Her new style of travel blog invites people to vote what happens next in her real-life adventure story. Already followers from around the world are debating her first destination. Should Indiana June cycle to Killorglin for the crowning of a goat, surf the icy Atlantic waters, meet a matchmaker in Lisdoonvarna or catch a ferry to Cape Clear Island for goats milk ice-cream?
Indiana said that she wrote down a list of all the things she loves in life and then tried to find a way to combine them all at once. She loves spontaneous travel, meeting new people, storytelling, sketching and painting and of course cycling.
The Bernard Shaw in Dublin is hosting the launch party on Thurs 04 August where live voting will culminate in a big reveal of where she’s headed first. The RDS National Crafts and Student Art Awards Exhibition is a major event in the Irish craft and visual arts calendar and attracts the very best in amateur and professional crafts practice in Ireland every year. It provides a platform for designers and emerging students to gain much deserved attention whilst giving the public the opportunity to purchase unique and magnificent creations. The Exhibition will be open during the Dublin Horse Show from 03-07 August, but it will NOT be free then. If you want to see the exhibition for free, you have to do that on Thrus/Fri 28+29 July. At “Post Cards from Dublin” with Artist Elaine Leader, children (10-12 years) will be using a broad range of printmaking techniques, Postcards from Dublin will provide children with the opportunity to explore their sense of ‘place’, allowing them to express their responses to the city and their local environment in an experimental and creative way culminating in a range of postcards which will convey their feelings and attitudes towards their Capital City. Admission is free, but booking is essential.

Mainly, but not exclusively, drawn from a diaspora of Iranian artists, Experimental Film Society is responsible for rescuing and preserving many of its members’ films, which otherwise might have been lost forever. It was the first film featuring ‘The Goons’, the famous comic team from the hit BBC radio show that was so much a part of the 1950s in the UK and is regarded as the forerunner to Monty Python and all other broadcast comedy in Britain. I know, Greystones is stretching the “Greater Dublin” idea a little, but it is the closest Americana and Roots Festival and you can reach the town in the South of Dublin easily by DART. There will be loads of bluegrass, hillbilly, rockabilly, blues and gypsy gigs and many of them are free. In addition there will be lots of Children Entertainment, a French Market, an Air Sea Rescue display and lots and lots of Bluegrass music outdoors and indoors. Bluegrass is so different to what we usually hear and I might go for a taster to Greystones this weekend. ;-)

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY
On Monday 01 August we will have a bank holiday. Expect that nearly all shops and restaurants are open. Buses, Luas and trains are on Sunday schedule and Pay&Display parking in the City Centre is free. Museums are closed, all banks are closed and many companies will close their offices.
The track record of the August Bank Holiday as far as summer temperatures are concerned is not the best, but I never give up hope for a REALLY hot day. ;-)
Some of the regular Sunday events will not take place on the Sunday before a Bank Holiday and others will just be moved onto the Monday.

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. Since the Office of Public Works (OPW) has launched an initiative to encourage more people to visit the historic sites that it manages, this is only the second First Wednesday. Most sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will now be free every first Wednesday from now until the end of the year.

A performance by Karl Klomp and Tom Verbruggen which involves a live ‘cinema’ set where circuit-bent video mixers and audio tools are fused to create a minimal, raw and unbridled performance.
Gijs Gieskes leads a live audio / visual performance with a home made video synthetizer. Gijs is an instrument builder, artist, designer, musician and teacher.
Gamepak Dublin lead a live performance using videogame hardware in order to create music. Gamepak is a collective of live musicians, visualists, pixel artists, hardware hackers, disc spinners, data jockeys, VJs, designers and circuit benders.

CLASSICAL TWIST 2011 – DUN LAOGHAIRE

On the first weekend in August, The Peoples Park in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin will be filled with the sounds of classical music, when The Classical Twist Shows, presented by DLR Events and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, take place. Tickets are not required for these shows and the park will be open to all who wish to attend. The Slovak Festival Ensemble will perform well-known and loved classical pieces from Bach to The Beatles and The Stones to Strauss. The organisers invite guests to bring deck chairs, picnic blankets and refreshments if they wish. Led by Vladimir Jablokov, the evening shows will include pieces from Mozart, Brahms, Strauss, Dvorak and many more.
On Sunday August 7th the show will be a sing along especially for families and children with songs from smash hit shows such as High School Musical, Fame, Annie, the Jungle Book, The Lion King and Many more.

______This is odd!!______________

TEMPLE BAR CULTURAL TRUST AT RISK
This week, I don’t find it just “odd”, I am outraged.
Back in March the Dublin City Councillor Mannix Flynn (That’s the guy who had the weirdest outdated election posters at the last two general elections votemannixflynn.ie/ Strangely, considering his anti-cultural views, a lot of artists supported him.) misunderstood something about the Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) and started a process that is now endangering one of the best working cultural entities in Dublin. You can read here what happened in that City Council Meeting: dublinobserver.com/2011/03/temple-bar-trust-to-be-reviewed/ Because Flynn got it wrong, a review of the TBCT was undertaken and came to the conclusion that the TBCT should be closed down and that Dublin City should take over the operation (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/0701/1224299848672.html). It is not clear what the MAIN reason for that suggestion is, but probably the possible saving of EUR800,000? The report was done by some consultants, so it very much seems to be a “left brain” report where all the good work that the TBCT does in the cultural field is not at all appropriately acknowledged.
On 25 July a City Council meeting discussed the TBCT the conclusion of the report (you can watch the whole 4 (!!) hour meeting here www.dublincity.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_interactive/62110) and only thanks to the objection of Labour and Sinn Fein councillors, a final decision was deferred (www.rte.ie/news/2011/0725/templebar.html).
After all this, let me tell you why I am outraged: I wrote here a few weeks ago, that it could well be that the TBCT will have to be revised and that some improvements/modifications might have to be implemented, but looking at the brilliant cultural work that the TBCT does for many many years. More than EUR400,000 is spent for cultural works and different to other expenditure, I feel we get good value for that money. The TBCT is constantly active and supportive of cultural work and without the TBCT, Temple Bar would be not much more than an area for drunkenness and mayhem. Now some might suggest that the dissolution of the TBCT and the transfer of its responsibilities to Dublin City wouldn’t automatically end the cultural work in the Temple Bar area and I agree that this COULD be the case, but I definitely think that a dedicated and focused group is required to look after this hugely important area for Dublin and only a separate organisation can achieve that. Yes, Dublin City does good work and runs high quality events (they often don’t tell us about their events and I am criticising that regularly and consistently), but if an organisation is responsible for the very focused area of Temple Bar, it undoubtedly is more efficient than if the area of focus would be WHOLE Dublin. I think there would be no Culture Night without the Temple Bar Cultural Trust and there would be no Temple Bar Food Market and no Designer Mart and no Summer Festival like the recent “Made in Temple Bar”. So, if you have an opportunity, let the Dublin City Councillors know your opinion about the TBCT before October. I fear it will be gone soon otherwise.

Two “This is odd!” articles this week! Not as a bank holiday bonus, but because I can just not hold back on sharing this second story with you too. ;-)

SOLAS REPLACES FAS ..AND SCREWS UP AGAIN
FAS is (still) the “Irish National Training and Employment Authority”, which “promotes job opportunities and training courses for school leavers, post graduates and professionals.” A good and relevant organisation that could do a lot of good, ESPECIALLY since the unemployment situation in Ireland has significantly dis-improved over the last few years. But there was a problem: FAS wasted a massive amount of money (EUR643,000!) on travel and luxuries between 2004 and 2008 and over that scandal the Director General of FAS had to step down. Fás is Irish for growth, but the organisation was called “Foras Áiseanna Saothair” (Labour Facilities Foundation), a cumbersome sounding name, where you wonder if the three words were maybe cobbled together just to make up the Irish word.
The new government decided to break up the scandal riddled FAS and replaced it with a new agency, that would have responsibility for all public funding of further education and training. The training function of FAS will be absorbed into the restructured local Vocational Education Committees. Many think this “replacement” is nothing else than a renaming and because the opinion is that FAS is rotten to the core, there are serious doubts if the new organisation can be better than the old. But the best is the name of the new organisation: The Minister for Education and Skills has announced that it will be called SOLAS (Seirbhísí Oideachais Leanúnaigh agus Scileanna). (www.rte.ie/news/2011/0727/solas.html) Because Solas means “Light” in Irish, is seems obvious that the tradition of finding an abbreviation first and then forcing words into it is still alive. (In English “Seirbhísí Oideachais Leanúnaigh agus Scileanna” has the uninspiring meaning “Continuing Education And Skills Services”, and considering that the training function has been grouped out, the name doesn’t even make that much sense.)
The worst, however, is that in the time of branding and trademarking and Internet, the people in FAS or in the Department of Education and Skills hadn’t realised that “Solas” is already a well used word with LOTS of other uses. A simple search on the Company Registration Office site (www.cro.ie/search/CompanySearch.aspx) would have shown that there are already approx. 50 (!!) companies in Ireland that have “Solas” in their name, INCLUDING a “Solas Education for Life”, “Solas Consultancy” and “Solas Development”. And on top of that, www.solas.ie is used by a well established Trinity College project that helps children who are in isolation wards in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.
Whoever approved this new name, should be sent looking for a new job!
