Hi all!

My declared and definite goal is to get the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” to you much earlier than in recent weeks, but it seems that a series of hiccups are there to catch me out again and again. The hiccups lately are caused by a spam checker. When I send the weekly newsletter, it will be checked to see if it is spam-suspicious and the mail will be graded on a scale from 0-5. The closer it is to 5 the more likely it is that the spam checker on your end will refuse accepting the mail. So the check makes a lot of sense, but because a wrong word or an exclamation mark at the wrong place can turn a totally harmless sentence into a suspicious message, the process is at the same time a bit pain. iContact, who send the mails for me to all 10600 of you don’t send a mail if the spam score is too high and it can take a long time to find the one word that triggers the too high rating. Ahh, the fun of it! ;-)

“Mail size” is a criteria as well in the classification process and it is currently my biggest problem. Work is ongoing and hopefully soon a solution will be found! :-)

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
Have you heard the saying “People come into your life for a reason”? This week’s video clip quotes the full saying and combines that with some nice pictures. I have experienced that again and again: People that I met that had a huge impact on my life or just made a small difference. They were with me on life’s path for a while and then we parted ways. Where we are today is a product of our experiences and of the people we met in the past. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLltt5cPDOc

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Nicola R was the only wonderful person that helped the Dublin Event Guide with her much appreciated donations. Every bit of help is hugely appreciated and is important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about …and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)

BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

In the last 12 months the following wonderful people have sponsored this Dublin Event Guide: Noemi V, Ciaran W, Isabel F, Brendan M , Tom D, Luke, Monika K, Janine McK, Tom D, Sebastian B, Paul T, Anne G, Marc F, Camelia P, Nicola B, Ciaran H, Ryan M, Ellen M, Gerard C, Laura G, Fergus G, Emma S, Tara R, Karen L, Catherine T., Rainey D-G, Sally P, Johan S, Lorraine F, Eimear MacH, Elzbieta D, Monika E, Tracey OC, Julia Sch., Isabelle F, Barry P, Alan G, Gerard Ph, Irial G, Louise M, Milena V, Fanny T, Clodagh O’C, Fiona F, Yvonne S, Loretta K, Lauren O’R, Charles C, Caoimhe L, Adrian Ph, Sandi C, Elva O’G, Sally Ph, Thomas D, Emilie Ch, Hans Martin W, Eamonn O’R, Patrick O’C, Eamonn U, Fiona O’R, Louise B, Serena F, Paul M, Louise F, Colin D, Philip McK, Catherine E, Mélanie B, Irene H, Jo H, Ronan K, Clodagh O’C, Alison P, Claire H, Brian L, Therese O’R, Sean S, Zelie McG, Christian K, Esme E, Vincent R, Sophie P, Tom B, Barbara Q-B, Joan S, Catherine E, Deirdre I, Donna M, Conor R, Tom McM, Anna F, Corina R, Maite L-Sch, Aine C, Justin McC, Paul A, Enrique P, Kiera M, Sinead D and Sarah C, Anto K, A C, Lorraine M, Nikodem R, Stefanie N, Emma L, Brendan M, Margaret B, Karen D, Clare D, Paula R, Selina McC, Darragh D, Marta T, Rebecca T, Celina N, Caroline K, Nicola R and www.GravitationalFX.ie (An Irish Web Design, SEO and Internet Marketing who offer affordable web design.), www.FlamencoIndalo.com (A group that supports and promotes the art of Flamenco in Ireland.), www.olliart.com (An art curator and seller of art to businesses and private collectors.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, on the search for a new gallery venue.) and www.a1computers.ie in Dun Laoghaire/Cabinteely (…who repair computers, printers and sort out Internet problems fast and who sell computers, laptops and lo w priced printer cartridges). ______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

——————————————————–

Sooo many events this week. None of them are really massive, but all these little events are nevertheless hugely interesting. It is an educational week again with lots and lots of lectures and it is a week for film fans.

On Saturday I will be at a wedding in the afternoon, but would love to go to the Sun Show of Astronomy Ireland if I could or the Händel Concert in the afternoon. For some the Oltremara Dances from the north of Italy will be exciting, but it is not really my thing. ;-)

On Sunday the Fencing Taster Session interests me and apart from that I will probably be at the Brocante Market and spend some time in Iveagh Gardens enjoying spring out in nature.

On Monday the Five Lamps Festival starts. Lots of free events, but a little difficult to find. However, if you don’t give up and keep looking for the right event for you, you will be rewarded with good events! The latin American Film Festival starts as well on Monday.

Tuesday is a mad day: Really interesting Science Gallery events, a talk about the Northstrand Bombings, A photography Workshop in the Instituto Cervantes, a documentary screening about important Italians in Ireland and the Climate. Culture. Change event. Wow! How can I decide between all these!? :-O

Wednesday is quieter and I would go to the Inn Jokes if I had time.

Thursday is Event Guide night for me as well, but you could go for me to the Grow Your Business lecture or the really interesting sounding Amnesty International talk about Russia, the Mafia State OR the talk about the Chinese Space Programme. Again too much choice!

;-) Enjoy the week!

The Tivoli is venue for “Thank you for the Music – The story of ABBA”, a multi-media experience of film, drama, costumes, choreography and the music of the greatest pop group of all time. Then we whirl through the early years of “Mamma Mia” and “SOS” before entering the Superstar era with songs like “Money, Money, Money”, “Fernando” and “Dancing Queen”. The show celebrates this group that sold more than 370 mio records and at the same time shines a light on their personal stories. Tickets are EUR 20 for all Matinees and on Tuesdays and EUR 28.50 for the shows from Wednesday – Saturday. The show started on 03 April and will only run until 29 April. For the Dublin Event Guide Readers the Tivoli has made five (!!) pairs of tickets available and if you feel lucky, you can give this competition a go: Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with ABBA as the subject and with your name and your mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Please note that the tickets are for Tuesday 17 April, so make sure that you are available on that day if you enter the competition. www.tivoli.ie/thank-you-for-the-music-%E2%80%93-the-story-of-abba/

Ticket competitions are great, but it would be nice to have a few more product competitions too. You can reach me on dublineventguide@gmail.com

NEW STREET STALLS FOR DUBLIN
Dublin City has decided to allow more street stalls throughout the City. Dublin to get new street stalls. 17 new mobile stalls will be given a license and will sell from coffee and snacks to jewellery, caricatures and paintings. If you want to be one of the stall holders, you can apply to Dublin City now. Stalls will be in the City Centre (Liffey Street, O’Connell Bridge, Merrion Square, Liffey Boardwalk, Barnardo Square) and some will be further out (Sandymount Promenade, Traingle in Ranelagh).
The cost vary widely from EUR 500 per year for an artist on the Liffey boardwalk via EUR 5k and 6k for jewellery on Barnardo Square or coffee stalks at the IFSC and Hesuton Station and late-night food stalls in Fleet Street to the highest cost for the flower vendors in Grafton Street (EUR 8k). It is a VERY wide range, but I don’t think it is too high for these prime locations. Keep in mind the figures are per YEAR. jrnl.ie/409264

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

PHIL DARBY – COPPER HOUSE GALLERY

At the heart of this work is a desire to capture a feeling of wonder and discovery – something we can lose touch with as adults. His lifelong love of forests inspires his drawing, painting and writing. www.thecopperhousegallery.com

SYNGE SYMPOSIUM – TCD
Thurs 19 Apr: 09:20-16:00 – Fitzgerald Building, School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin 2
The School of Physics in Trinity College Dublin is hosting a free symposium to celebrate the extraordinary vision of Edward Hutchinson Synge (1890-1957), also known as Hutchie. He was the nephew of John Millington Synge, who wrote the Playboy of the Western World, and the older brother of John Lighton Synge, the outstanding mathematician and theoretical physicist. Hutchie’s highly original conceptions in physics were fifty years ahead of his time. He studied at Trinity College and his visionary insights into future technology lie in what we now call nanoscience, with the invention of the near-field optical microscope that allows imaging below the diffraction limit, in LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) where he outlines a scheme for studies of the atmosphere, and in astronomy where he invented a new type of telescope. The detailed programme of this event can be found on the same site where you also can register for this free event.

Thurs 19 Apr: 19:30 – Amnesty International, 48 Fleet Street, Dublin 2
Luke Harding, the Guardian’s former Moscow correspondent and the author of “Mafia State: How one reporter became an enemy of the brutal new Russia” will be speaking in Dublin. In today’s Russia human rights defenders and independent journalists are threatened, harassed and even attacked. The murder of Anna Politkovskaya in October 2006 shocked the world. Yet for every Anna, there have been many less widely known journalists killed for their work across Russia. Many of these deaths were never properly investigated. Luke Harding was appointed the Guardian’s Moscow correspondent in 2007 and wrote extensively on politics and corruption in Russia and the curtailment of civil liberties. He also investigated counter-terrorism and operations conducted by the Russian security forces in the Caucasus region. In 2011, shortly after reporting that leaked US diplomatic cables described Russia as a ‘virtual mafia state’, he became the first British journalists in 11 years to be expelled from Russia. In his new book he writes about his own experiences as a journalist targeted by the Federal Security Bureau who broke into his home, hacked his email and monitored his phone calls. All are welcome to his talk about his time in Moscow and about his book. Admission is free. www.amnesty.ie/news/mafia-state-author-speak-dublin

INFORMING ABOUT POLITICAL PROTESTS COULD SOON BE ILLEGAL – IN SPAIN
Strangely I wasn’t able to find too many references to this development in Spain and it seems that the Irish media didn’t pick it up at all: The new Spanish government plans to punish every communication medium that informs about acts that seriously interfere with the public order. (in Spanish: politica.elpais.com/politica/2012/04/11/actualidad/1334147016_538948.html)
This means, that if someone informs about a protest march via the Internet, he/she can be convicted for a minimum of 2 years in prison. Wow! Since a protest march can turn ugly even if the original intention was a peaceful and democratic protest, this could result in a situation where any information about any protest will be risky. Democracy this ain’t! In May 2011 a massive protest took place in Madrid (emajmagazine.com/2011/05/20/spain-starts-up-its-own-revolution) and was initiated via the Internet, this could be illegal when the new suggestions become law. Because governments don’t like the opposition and happily adopt ways to suppress opposition if it works in other countries, we should hope that the Spanish people will not let this suggestion by the Spanish interior minister become law!

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
