It is not the busiest week, but when you start looking at the details of the events, you find an amazing richness of events again.

On Saturday the Love Dublin Festival looks very interesting. It is the first time this takes place, but it has huge potential, so give it your support. For Writers the Open Day at the Irish Writer’s Centre is interesting. I will go to Love Dublin and then will go to the Science Gallery, because I still haven’t seen all of the “Edible” exhibition which will come to an end already next week.

On Sunday I am tempted by the Fencing Taster class and plan to go to the Pure Vintage Fair and afterwards to the Experience Japan Festival. The Knowledge Exchange is very interesting as well, but I can’t go to all events…unfortunately. ;-)

On Tuesday I would go to Green Drinks and maybe to the City Hall History Lectures and if you are interested in dance, then definitely have a look at the “Out of Time” event on Thursday! Rare opportunity to experience something like that!

TRIM HOT AIR BALLOON FIESTA 2012
Sat 07 – Mon 09 April: 07:00-19:00 – Castle Grounds, Trim Castle, Trim, Co. Meath
A great event that is taking place a bit outside of Dublin, but the organisers offered some tickets and it is a big spectacular that can’t happen just everywhere, so I know that some of you are interested in that and therefore I am today even including a Co. Meath event. The Trim Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2012 is Ireland’s biggest Hot Air Balloon Festival. Over 20 gigantic balloons including Sonic, Darth Vadar and Action Man, will be the main focus and in addition there are many other events: Skydiving, Paramotoring, 3D Kites & Model Balloons. A Magical Night Glow where balloons are lit in time with choreographed music and complimented by fire-jugglers, a light show and LED robots. And on the ground there will be an artisan food markets, Falconry, Old McDonalds’ Petting Farm, Top Gear Bugatti Veyron Experience, Jet Fighter Simulator, Face-painting, Inflatable Wonderland, Vintage Carousel and lots more. You can certainly see the balloons from a distance, but if you want to get the full festival experience, there is an admission charge of EUR 10 per day (EUR 7.50 for students and under 12s are free). WEE ADVENTURE FILM FESTIVAL – TICKETS
The 5th Wee Adventure Film Festival will take place on Fri 30 March in Vicar Street. The festival is the home of short films with a sense of adventure and this year there will be 20 adventurous films. Get your tickets on www.ticketmaster.ie for EUR 15 (+ booking fee). Vote for your favourite film at the festival and be in with a chance to win great outdoor gear. The films will cover Climbing, Mountain Biking and Kitesurfing as well as newcomers Ocean rowing, paragliding and Free Running. The event runs from 20:00-22:00 with doors opening at 19:00. ONE CITY, ONE BOOK 2012
For the seventh year, Dublin celebrates a book that is connected to Dublin through the “One City, One Book 2012” festival. The festival takes place in April every year and is accompanied by a series of events. The chosen book for April 2012 is “Dubliners” by James Joyce and is designed to encourage everyone in the city to read the same book during April. The event website will list a number of events and when I come across additional free events, I will add them to the Dublin Event Guide. www.dublinonecityonebook.ie/

PHOENIX PARK ROADS WILL STAY CLOSED
After months and months of extremely slow road works in Phoenix Park at a construction site where it seems as if most of the time nobody was working, we slowly find out that maybe the extremely long duration was on purpose. It seems that the Office of Public Works is trying to do everything to make Chesterfield Avenue unavailable for normal traffic. I can see where they are coming from, it would be great to use the park more as a park instead of as a main traffic artery, but if they want that, then they should at least cars get in and park somewhere. Phoenix Park is just too big to get everywhere easily on foot and since there are no more buses in Phoenix Park your own transport is the only way to get (in a reasonable time) to locations like Farmleigh House.
From 06 April (until 30 Sept) a part of the main road (Chesterfield Avenue) will be closed to traffic at weekends until the end of the summer. From Easter weekend a 1km stretch of Chesterfield Avenue from the roundabout at Áras an Uachtaráin to the roundabout near the Castleknock gate will close every weekend from 10:00 Friday until 22:00 Sunday. Officially this closer is to allow for the celebrations of the 350th anniversary of the park, but the Office of Public Works says it will monitor how people respond and might make the closure permanent. A number of events are taking place to mark the 350th anniversary of the park, including a map exhibition and a Mad Hatters Tea Party on Easter Saturday.
Very odd, though was the statement of Junior Minister Brian Hayes: He said that the recent closure of another part of Chesterfield Avenue for roadworks allowed people to discover different parts of the park. Does anybody get what he is trying to say?

EATING OUT PRICES IN DUBLIN
I found this on Broadsheet: www.broadsheet.ie/2012/03/30/good-nights-1975/ It is an ad for a hotel in Stillorgan from 1975 and in it, it says that a 5.course table d’hote dinner with all inclusive was available for 2 Pounds and 50 cent. I wasn’t able to find out what the value of 2.50 would be today. Does anybody know? Was it still Sterling in 1975? Then it could have been equivalent to approx 5 Euro. But considering that a house that was bought in 1975 for 15,000 Pound was sold in 1997 for 350,000 and at its peak would have been more than 600,000, the 2.50 could be a LOT of money in relation to house prices.

MadArt Gallery is inviting to Estonian artist Ulla Juske’s first personal show in Dublin. Gatecrasher is a thought provoking story about unknown figure invading the artist’s personal space. She describes “I received a postcard, it was addressed to me, but was sent anonymously. It had a picture of me walking on the street in the front and a philosophical text (later learned to be a quote by Ludwig Wittgenstein) in the back. I received a similar postcard every day for a month. There was no harm done to in any way. Yet somebody was watching, following and photographing me. Somebody was gatecrashing my life…” Eeeek!

CoderDojo is an Irish movement of free coding clubs for children and young people where learning to code is made into a “fun, sociable experience”. At CoderDojo, members, some as young as five and six, learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and more. They meet like-minded people, show off what they have been working on, pass on what they know and generally learn that it is cool to be clever and to share. PILGRIMS IN SPAIN AND JAMES JOYCE – INSTITUTO CERVANTES

Connections between Galicia and Ireland are plentiful and varied. In his two major works, “Ulysses” and “Finnegans Wake”, James Joyce mentioned St. James’ pilgrims and the lecture will uncover this. In addition the short film “Dedalus in Compostela” will be screened. This film is inspired in Vicente Risco’s work by the same name, where the author has an imaginary conversation with Stephen Dedalus, one of the characters of Joyce’s work. Antonio R. de Toro is professor of English Philology at the Universidade da Coruña. Admission is free and the lecture will be in English.

FIRST WEDNESDAY – OPW SITES
Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month, as the announcement last year. The initiative was meant to go until the end of the year, but it seems it is still continuing. The Office of Public Works (OPW) has launched this initiative to encourage more people to visit the historic sites that it manages. Most OPW sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free on the First Wednesday as well.

ART IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE – LECTURE
Thurs 05 Apr: 18:00 – Irish Association of Art Historians, Newman House, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2. – “Associations promoting art in the public sphere: new exhibiting spaces in the Enlightenment and Romanticism” with Jesus Pedro Lorente will review the development of new instances of intermediation between artists and the public in the late eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century.
We cannot understand the rise of new professions like the art critics or the merchants of art, without considering the vogue for art as a public leisure. This not only concerned the affluent families of polite society with means to buy art regularly, but the broad public as well. Entrance to auction houses and shops was free of charge, and everybody was welcome in public exhibitions organized by the State or other official bodies. But the main focus of this paper will be art societies.

GOOD FRIDAY
Easter is coming up and Friday is “Good Friday”. Christians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and in Ireland this is an odd day. Odd because it is the one d ay of the year when shops and pubs are not allowed to sell alcohol. In recent years more and more loop holes are tested and one of them is that it is permitted to sell alcohol with food and last year I saw a situation where 12 bottles of beer were sold with half a chicken.
Important for employees is the fact that Good Friday is, surprisingly in predominantly Catholic Ireland, not a public holiday. So formally it is a normal working day. Nevertheless there are a number of companies that give the day off.
Because the pubs are closed, the entertainment options on that day are very limited.

A talk by Frank Shovlin, Senior Lecturer of Irish Literature in English at the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool and author of Journey Westward: Joyce, Dubliners and the Literary Revival, to be published this spring by Liverpool University Press.
++ Sun 29 Apr: 15:00 – ‘Joyce and Chapelizod’
Actor Barry McGovern, a resident of Chapelizod, will discuss the Joyce family’s association with the Chapelizod area and will discuss ‘A Painful Case’, ‘Finnegans Wake’ and Joyce’s reference to the Phoenix Park Murders.

HOUSEHOLD CHARGE OPPOSITION – CONFUSED PROTEST
The Irish Media is going crazy at the moment about the Household Charge and with the deadline being just around the corner on Sunday 31 Mar, it will come to a peak over this weekend. At the same time the protestors are more determined than ever to see this succeed in this stand-off, despite the fact that it is unquestionable that they will lose!
Why am I so convinced? Well, think about it: The government has, rightly or wrongly, identified that there is a need for these 16.8mio and they chose to introduce a tax on home ownership. They labelled it “charge” and claim (dishonestly!) that the tax is needed to pay local services (All services were paid before the charge from other monies, so “local services” is just a convenient excuse to justify the tax.) but without a doubt, they are convinced that the money is needed. The protesters are refusing to pay because it is a tax? Dohh! …because it is unfair? Dohh again! All taxes are perceived as unfair! …because it could help financing the bank debt? Dohh a third time! All money taking in by a government – and keep in mind that a state has no other significant source of income than through taxes – will be used for what the state has to pay. If a government has chosen to pay the debt of banks, than that money has to come from you and me!
The confusion, though, though is this: People seem to think that not paying the household charge will stop the government from paying the bank debt. This is totally wrong. Not paying just means that the money has to be raised somewhere else. Maybe another increase in Motor Tax. Or another increase in VAT. Or an income tax increase.
Nobody wants to pay more taxes, but not paying the household charge is like refusing to pay your income tax or your motor tax and people have to be penalised accordingly.
The protest should be against the cause not against the symptom! I can’t tell you what to do, but make sure that you challenge the protest leaders on their reason for the protest. Is it just a convenient opportunity for socialists and some Independent TDs to raise their own profile? Why are they not protesting against recent Motor Tax increases? Or recent VAT increases? Or recent VHI+other health insurance increases? All of us have paid well over EUR 100 more in increase charges against which not a single person protested. Isn’t that odd?

IRELAND SIMILAR TO CHINA ACCORDING TO ENDA KENNY
What do you think of when you hear China? Maybe you think of “huge” or “masses of people” or “human rights issues” or “extreme poverty” or “non-democratic” or “comm unism”? Hmmm, interesting what Enda Kenny said before he went to China for a 1 week visit: “Our similarities are greater than our differences and we have in many respects a surprisingly similar business culture, centred on enterprise and innovation.” Has he completely lost it? Or is it maybe the three other important terms that come to mind when you think of China: “corruption”, “censorship” and “dodgy politicians”?
