Markets everywhere

Christmas Flea Market, Richmond Barracks Christmas Fair, Christmas at the Castle and many more

Hi!!

This is the time in the year, when Christmas markets take over. Now, when I say “Christmas markets”, I don’t mean “Christmas Markets” in the way they are on the continent. Germany, Austria have some outstanding specimens of proper Christmas Markets. In Ireland, or should I say more specifically in Dublin we have more “Markets at Christmas” than Christmas Markets.

Only shiny example of a Christmas Market is the “Christmas at the Castle” market in the upper courtyard of Dublin Castle. It is really close and the best attempt ever. This year the OPW also gave up on the silly idea of asking people to register for (free) tickets. It is not necessary for a market and it doesn’t work at all.

So enjoy the (only) Christmas Market in Dublin at Dublin Castle, but also give the seller at the “Markets at Christmas” a chance to show you their great products.

You are wondering where to find out about all the markets? Well, luck has it that I know the BEST website for all the bigger (and some smaller) markets that happen around this time of the year.

Go to www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com and you will find all markets listed. Right now there are still some gaps for markets after this weekend, but by the end of the weekend, the list should be complete. Feel free to tell your friends about it, if you think the website is helpful.

Donations in December:
EUR 205

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week, I didn’t receive any donations, but with your tremendous help in the week before, that was absolutely no problem. Your help is much appreciated and is making a difference. Because of you, the Dublin Event Guide continues spreading the word about free events!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ Entangled Islands – Ireland & the Caribbean

05 Sept-29 Feb – 10:00-17:00 – EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: included in normal admission

Discover 400 years of Irish links to the Caribbean in this temporary exhibition (until February 2024) that  tells the stories of a wide range of Irish people who traversed and settled in the Caribbean. It all started in the 17th century, when Irish indentured labourers were among the many thousands transported to work on islands acquired by the English. The Irish in time found their way into positions of power and privilege across the region, whether as plantation owners or colonial governors.
Entangled Islands traces this long and multifaceted history of connection through 19 key figures on either side of the Atlantic, from merchants and enslavers to poets and journalists.
Admission is included in the normal ticket price. Find out more here epicchq.com/entangled-islands/

+++ Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Christmas Concert – Ticket Competition
“Christmas Spirit: An Evening of Christmas Joy” is the title of the Christmas event with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, supported by Gardiner Street Primary School Choir & Xavier Music Ministry. The event will take place on Wednesday 13 December from 19:30-21:00 (Door: 19:00). And it will happen in St. Francis Xavier Church in Upper Gardiner Street.
Tickets are EUR 15 for adults and just EUR 5 for children and you can buy tickets via www.getthislink.com/christmasjoy
I am part of the choir and heavily involved in the concert (if the sound is bad, you can blame me! ;-) ) and we are making two pairs of tickets available for a competition.
If you want to win one of the two pairs, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with your name and phone number in the body of the mail and with GARDINER as the subject line. Your mail has to be with me by 18:00 on Thursday 14 December

+++ Live Animal Crib at Mansion House
The Live Animal Crib is back! After last year’s mayor saw some non-existent animal welfare issue with the crib, this year the crib is back and it is open from 06-24 December. You would think that the opening hours will be mentioned somewhere, but unfortunately that is not the case. But if we assume 11:00-17:00, we are probably very close. www.ifa.ie/resources/ifa-live-animal-crib-returns-to-mansion-house-for-christmas-2023/

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ Christmas FM
Christmas FM is back and will play Christmas songs right up to Christmas. You can listen to it online on christmasfm.com/ or on FM on frequency 105.2. The charities this year are Barnardos, Barretstown, Make-A-Wish Ireland and Community Foundation Ireland and the goal is to collect over 1 million for children in the next 2 years.

+++ Dublin Winter Lights in Merrion Square
The “Winter Light” installation at Merron Square is back and while it is not free (EUR 2 per adult with 2 free kids included), it is low-priced enough to mention it here. This is not a Christmas light installation, but nice and entertaining lights that could mesmerise your children. You can buy tickets and see some pictures at dublinwinterlights.ie/dublin-winter-lights-merrion-square/

+++ Exhibition: Women of Sheriff Street
An interesting exhibition of local artists who have painted the Women of Sheriff Street is on show in the Central Bank on North Wall Quay until Fri 15 December. +++ The Moving Crib is moving again

The Moving Crib is a crib that stretches across the whole basement of the St Martin Apostolate at Parnell Square and in which the figures move in a endearing way. So it is particularly suited for kids, but also adults will get something out of it. The Moving Crib is open from 11:00-17:30 every day (with a small number of exceptions) from 27 Nov until 07 Jan. Admission is free. The address is St Martin Apostolate, 42 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1 www.stmartin.ie/crib/

From Thursday 23 Nov Dublin Port Company presents the exhibition “Solidarity – The Dockers of Dublin Port”. The exhibition is open every Thursday until Sunday from 11:30-15:30. Admission is free. www.dublinportarchive.com/news_event/solidarity-the-dockers-of-dublin-port

+++ IKEA Crafting / Music / Cooking Workshops
