Hi all!

I know, I know it would have been better if you had received this mail on Thursday because I imagine that a good few of you either have the Friday off or take it as a holiday to make this weekend an extra long one. Good Friday is a bit off in Ireland because it is a special day (at least if you follow any of the Christian churches) but it is NOT a public holiday. Many companies nevertheless give their employees a day off (some force them to take a day of their annual holidays) but it definitely is not a unanimous approach. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to complete the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) before this morning, so it might miss some of you if you only have access to your e-mails while in work.

Bank holiday weekends are usually not the busiest when it comes to events, because many people leave Dublin to go home (to the country side or abroad) or to use the long weekend to go on holidays. Easter is slightly different. There are quite a number of events taking place and while the focus is a bit more on the children, there are activities for the grown-ups too. ;-)

This weekend I will have to do some catch up work and have to recover from previous weeks. But on Sunday I might go to the Crafty market and will definitely be in Gardiner Street Church for the weekly Gospel Mass there. On Monday I will – if the weather is nice – go to Trim to see the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (I might have 2 palces in my car, so let me know if you are interested to come with me.) On Tuesday evening I will go to the “Green Drinks” in Messrs Maguire, on Wednesday I will meet a lovely friend who is back in Dublin “for one night only” and on Thursday I will try to go to the EYP event if I find the time despite having to write the next Event Guide that night. Sounds busy? It is, but there are so many good events taking place! I hope to meet you at some!

MOUNTAIN SAFETY TRAINING – COMPETITION
The Adventure Company “Outdoors Ireland” is running a Mountain Safety Promotion in the Wicklow Mountains on 11+18 April, in conjunction with the Great Outdoors Store in Dublin. The fun and intensive half-day workshops will give hill walkers the opportunity to learn map reading skills, develop safety awareness, take compass bearings and deal with emergencies. Hiking Boots are provided and everybody from beginner to expert is welcome. ONE CITY, ONE BOOK: THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY
2010 is the fifth year of the Dublin: One City, One Book project, designed to encourage everyone in the city to read the same book during the month of April each year. The project promotes reading in a city which boasts one of the world’s greatest literary heritages. Dublin: One City One Book is a Dublin City Council initiative led by the City Library Service in association with Penguin Books, Dublin BIDS, The Irish Times and Dublin Tourism. The ‘Dublin: One City, One Book’ choice for April 2010 is “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Dubliner Oscar Wilde, which was first published in 1890. Throughout the month, the libraries in Dublin invite to a variety of many free events and under the menu item PROGRAMME on the website you can find all the details. TRIM HOT AIR BALLOON FIESTA
I know, that Trim is in Co. Meat and not in Dublin, but if you have access to a car it less than an hours drive and for a special event it might be worth it. The Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is a special event. See baloons in the shape of Thomas The Tank Engine, an Easter Bunny, two bees or a young chicken pass peacefully over your head. Every day (weather permitting) from Fri 02-Mon 05 Apr at 08:00 and 18:00 a balloon start will take place. And in between there is variety of family entertainment available. DUBLIN TOURIST BUS – KIDS GO FREE
On the “Dublin Bus Tour Hop On – Hop Off” (that’s the green Tourist Bus in Dublin and on the “City Sightseeing (Multi-lingual Tour)” (that’s the red Tourist Bus), children can now travel for free. With both companies 2 children under 14 can now travel for free on the tour when accompanied with a fare paying adult. The offer is available until 31 Dec 2010.

NATIONAL MUSEUM RE-OPENS
Because of the go-slow/work to “rule” protest of civil and public servants, the National Museum in Kildare Street and Collins Barracks was closed last Sunday and all events were cancelled. However, the museum has issued a press release saying that the museum will be open this Sunday. The website hasn’t been updated yet in all areas, but I expect that all is back to normal.

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM TO RE-OPEN
Brilliant news from the Natural History Museum: After having been closed for many years (since 2007), first because a collapsed stair case and later because there were question marks about the further existence of the Natural Museum, it now has been announced that the Natural Museum on Merrion Square will open again in April 2010! You HAVE to see the museum, it is so outdated that it is brilliant! I will write more about it when I know the date for the re-opening.

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! SALLY OSBORNE – IMMA
Sally Osborn “will be making a number of interventions and performative gestures in relation to the painting Il Trovatore (c.1960) by Giorgio de Chirico.” Unfortunately I have no clue what that means, but I guess it all boils down to an exhibition of some form of art in the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA)? If you want to see the “interventions and performative gestures” you can do that from 23 March-05 May in the Process Room of the IMMA. BLASPHEMOUS EXHIBITION – IMOCA
The term “Irish Museum of…” causes most people to think that this is an official museum owned or part owned by the state as it is the case for the Irish Museum of Modern Art or the Irish Museum of Archaeology etc. A group of artists with a healthy portion of disrespect for institutions got together approx. 1 year ago and founded the “Irish Museum of Contemporary Art (IMOCA)”. It is anything but not official and not state owned. However, it is always busy and challenging. The challenge and the disrespect is reflected in the most recent exhibition which deals with the much criticised Blasphemy Law that was introduced in Ireland on 01 Jan.
The “Blasphemous Exhibition” in the IMOCA shows art from Richard Bartle, George Bolster, Hannah Breslin, Alan Butler, Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Steve Farley, Una Gildea, Sarah Hardacre, Jacinta Jardine, Mark Lomax, Matthew MacKisack, Justin McKeown, Noël O’Callaghan, RedMeat by Max Cannon, Emer Roberts, Will St. Leger, Kate Walters, Paul Woods. The opening ceremony will take place on Fri 02 Apr from 18:00-21:00 with opening words by Michael Nugent, president of Atheist Ireland, at 19:00. LIAM GILLICK – KERLIN GALLERY

The UCD Earth Sciences Institute is running a series of seminars that began on Fri

DUBLIN’S ALL CITY GRAFFITI JAM
This is one of these events where you either have to be very very lucky to find out about it OR you have to be a reader of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. ;-) But to be honest, I wouldn’t have found out about it if not the nice Jonny O’M had told me about it! I like the Dublin Event Guide Community in action! :-)
Dublin’s All City Graffiti Jam is a 3-day event that started last night with the exhibition ‘Graffiti on Canvas’. The exhibition features pieces by RIME MSK, SMASH, ZEBSTER, MASER, CIST and many more and is/was on show in Exchange, Exchange St., Temple Bar on Thursday. I am not sure if the exhibition continues over the weekend, but it might be worth checking. On Fri 02 April All City Records – who run this event – will be the location for an ‘In Store Blackbook Signing’ from 14:00-18:00 (Admission is free). Here, you can come and get your blackbook signed by RIME, SMASH, ZEBSTER, SCOTTY and SHOE.
On Sat 03 Apr the 3rd All City Tivoli Jam will be held in the Tivoli Theatre, Francis St. (Admission: EUR 5) This is where you will see live international Graffity Writers. If you have missed the exhibition or the blackbook signing, this will be an amazing chance to see writers like SMASH 137, RIME MSK, ZEBSTER, SCOTTY, SOTEN, KUBE and more working live and from scratch. In addition there will be B Boys, MCs and DJs and more signings. And you can go to the ‘On The Run Sketch Corner’ where you can enter our sketching competition or the ‘All City Stall’, a shop with relevant items. GOOD FRIDAY EVENT – URBAN OUTFITTERS
The Urban Outfitters Easter event is legendary by now. Long before rugby clubs and pub owners in Limerick tried to introduce alcohol to Good Friday, Urban Outfitters in Temple Bar were the only oasis on a dry Good Friday. The loop hole that the shop in Temple Bar used was the fact that the alcohol there is complimentary because the law only forbids SELLING alcohol on Good Friday!
However, don’t get this wrong, the Urban Outfitter event is not a get-drunk-on-Good-Friday event, instead it is an evening of fashion and music with a two hour DJ Set from “Filthy Dukes” from 19:00-21:00, during which complimentary drinks are available (while stocks last). 3D SOCCER – ARLINGTON HOTEL
From 03 April the Arlington Hotel near O’Connell Bridge will regularly invite to 3D soccer games. The Arlington Hotel have acquired a state of the art 3D TV and will be showing at least one game per week until the end of the season, starting with the important Manchester United vs Chelsea. Glasses and getting into the 3D area will be free, but will be done on a first come first served basis. So get there early. The first game to be shown on the new TV is taking place on Sat 03 Apr in the Arlington Hotel. Access is from 12:45. www.arlington.ie

NEW THEATRE – PLAY READING

It is possible that a number of shops will stay closed on Sunday, but will then open on Monday. If you intend to use Sunday for a big shopping trip, you better check with your preferred shops beforehand!

HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
And another month over: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. I am not 100% certain that it will take place on Easter Sunday as well, but would expect that it does. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. I know that there are concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. Please note that I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts. Instead I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. Your presence there will not change anything good or bad and if Dublin City didn’t allow this open and somewhat controllable market, the traders would sell their horses elsewhere where the ISPCA and the police could not be present. So leaving that market in place is probably a good idea and better for the animals than driving the trading into the underground.

1916 EASTER RISING COMMEMORATION
The Easter Rising of 1916 had a huge impact on the fight for freedom of Ireland from the British occupation. Many of the people involved in this rebellion got killed and with its relevance for Irish history it is only appropriate to celebrate this day and to commemorate the people that have given their lives.
Unfortunately, however, this commemoration is done in a way that reminds more of a Soviet military parade than of a sombre commemoration for fallen fighters for freedom. The president and the Taoiseach will be at 12:00 at the (General Post Office) GPO in O’Connell Street and the anachronistic military parade including armoured vehicles will walk/drive by the GPO. O’Connell Street will be blocked from very early morning (05:00) until 15:00.

HONOURING 1916 HEROES – LIBERTY HALL
“Honouring 1916 Heroes” is the name of the event on Mon 05 Apr from 12:00 that will be organised by the North Inner City Folklore Project.
The North Inner City Folklore Project will re-enact the hoisting of the Green Flag outside Liberty Hall on Palm Sunday by the Citizen Army. They will also unveil a plaque to Captain Sean Connolly of the Citizen Army who was killed on the roof of the City Hall at Sean McDermott Street.
The commemoration will have the following format:
+ At Liberty Hall, 12:00, a pageant will take place which will include the unfurling of the flag which the Citizen Army hoisted a week before the Rising. On that occasion a young inner city girl, Molly O Reilly from Gardiner Street was given the honour by James Connolly. At this year’s commemoration a young girl related to Molly O Reilly, will receive the flag from James Connolly-Herron a great grandson of James Connolly and re-enact the hoisting of the flag. They will be accompanied by a colour party dressed in the uniforms of Cumann na mBan and the Citizen Army.
+ The assembled gathering, including relatives of the 1916 leaders, will then march to Sean McDermott Street led by pipers and a colour party. At 58/59 Sean McDermott, Lower where the house of Captain Sean Connolly once stood, a plaque will be unveiled to his memory and also to celebrate the memory of Molly O Reilly. Captain Sean Connolly, a member of the Citizen Army, was killed in action on the roof of City Hall on Easter Monday. Sean’s four brothers and his sister also took part in the 1916 Rising
+ After the ceremony a photographic exhibition of Ireland’s fight for independence 1916 – 1923 will be on show in the nearby Community Hall at Killarney Court.

ZAZIE DANS LE METRO – FILM SCREENING
As a prelude to the Franco-Irish Literary Festival, the Alliance Française is inviting to a screening of the 1960 cult classic film “Zazie dans le metro”. Louis Malle’s fourth film, based on the novel by Raymond Queneau, is an absurdist wonder to behold, halfway between slapstick comedy and poetry. A sassy young girl embarks on a madcap Parisian adventure when she visits her trans vestite uncle and takes a raucous sightseeing tour of the city. The film will be introduced by UCD Lecturer Dr Laurent Marie. The screening takes place on Thurs 08 Apr at 18:30 in the Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar. IDEAS IN ACTION – EYP EVENT
The “European Young Professionals (EYP)” are inviting to their next event. The topic this time is “Ideas in Action! – Turn your business ideas into reality”. HANDEL’S DAY 2010
On Tues 13 Apr this year’s Handel Celebrations will take place. The Temple Bar Cultural Trust has announced the details of the programme for “In Handel’s Day” to celebrate George Friedrich Händel and his connections to Dublin. The day long celebration includes the famous Messiah on the Street performance as well as additional free activity featuring music and history from 18th century Dublin that will appeal to all ages. On 13 Apr 1742, Handel’s Messiah, one of the most famous musical pieces in the world, premiered on Fishamble Street in Temple Bar and each year the streets and surrounding areas are filled with the sounds from Our Lady’s Choral Society as they sing excerpts from Handel’s Messiah. New events this year include a special performance, A Global Hallelujah, by three Dublin national schools, traditional Irish music and an outdoor Movie on Meeting House Square Barry Lyndon (1975) which is regarded as one of Stanley Kubricks finest films depicting the 18th Century period. INSIGHT DEBATE – THE PUBLIC SECTOR
On Thu 15 April from 18:00-20:00 the “Insight Debates: The Public Sector Debate” will take place in the National College of Ireland in the IFSC. This free public event series is designed to elevate and enliven public discussion on the major topical issues of the day. Admission is free but you have to book your place and online registration is now open. The question that will be discussed on the day is “Can Ireland afford a bloated and inefficient public sector?” Karen Coleman is chairing the discussion and participants are Mark Fielding (Chief Executive, ISME), Austin Hughes (Chief Economist, KBC Bank), Pat McArdle (Economist & Irish Times columnist), Blair Horan (General Secretary, CPSU), Jack O’Connor (General President, SIPTU), Ruairi Quinn TD. NATIONAL MUSIC DAY – BUTTON FACTORY
On Fri 16 April is the first National Music Day “love:live music” in Ireland taking place and there will be some free concerts in Dublin and other places. The events in Dublin have a distinctly Irish flair with an evening of traditional music in the Button Factory in Temple Bar from 20:00-22:30. Three of Ireland’s most energetic groups contribute: Brendan Begley & Caoimhín Ó’Raghallaigh, Slide and Fidil. DE-FROSTED AND RE-FROZEN SUPER MARKET FOOD
Have you ever been in one of the 24hr Tesco supermarkets very late in the night? The aisles are full of trolleys (not the customer trolley type but the square one with high sides: www.bridgat.com/files/14938.jpg) and all the trolley’s are full of food waiting until employees will empty them and putt the goods in their place. Not a problem when it comes to rice or cornflakes or washing powder. But what if the trolley is full of frozen or chilled food and stands around for hours? If I buy a frozen pizza or peas it starts thawing the moment I take it out of the freezer and when I finish my shopping then drive home and then check the frozen food it is not very frozen anymore. But miraculously the frozen food that Tesco has waiting in the aisles is not affected? Well, it is! Check the peas! The manufacturer freezes them individually, next time you are in the supermarket check the peas and you will most likely find that the peas are a big block in the bag. This indicates that they started to thaw and were put back into a freezer. BAD form!! I can’t assess if the food could get spoilt, it depends on the duration it is out. During the week I was in Lidl and they had a big fridge on wheels with which they rolled the frozen food to the freezer in the shop! So there is obviously a workable solution. Maybe Tesco should look into it!?
