Hi all!

Already Friday again? This week just flew for me. How was yours? Because I worked throughout the weekend at the seminar I told you about a few times, I am looking forward to the upcoming weekend which will hopefully be more relaxing. ;-) Some of you – particularly the ones that are nearly as passionate about the Event Guide as I am – are probably wondering if the numbers were reached to get the donation I talked about as well and the news is not just good, but brilliant! The numbers weren’t as high as they were meant to be, BUT the donation was given nevertheless! So thanks to everyone who helped! I VERY much appreciate it!
[ad]
By the way, it was great to meet a good few of the Event Guide subscribers at the “Breakthrough to Success” seminar! I enjoyed meeting you all and hope you will stay in touch!

There is lots more good news that I need to tell you, but I will do it over the next few weeks. ;-) Suspense!! LOL

With the spring and summer festival season coming up, I wonder if we can all help together to get more people informed about what is going on in Dublin. At a training event a few weeks ago, I asked about 40 people (most of them from Dublin) if they knew about the main events like Dublin City Soul Festival, Street Performance World Championship and Festival of World Cultures and I was surprised how many people still have not heard about many of these events.

Can you help spreading the word again? You will find flyers and a poster here
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
and it would be great if you could print them and hang them up or hand them out. If you could hang them up or hand them out but CAN’T print them, let me know and I will find a solution! dublineventguide@gmail.com

For this week’s “Feel Good Slot” I chose a video clip that Cornelia sent to me. Thanks! It is a clip from or at least based around the film “The Secret”, but no matter if you know the film or not, I suggest that you read the instructions/suggestions in the video and keep them in mind over the weekend and during the coming week! www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MEgbE6Y-o0 Watch it a few times over the next 7 days to remind yourself again and again, it only lasts 2.5 minutes.

Last week David N., Atri B., Orna McE. and Damian L. donated money to the Dublin Event Guide and all the support is much appreciated! Thanks!

This newsletter is a non-paid spare-time activity of mine, not a commercial project and if you like it you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm if you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

——————————————————–

This weekend is not very busy. It seems that in anticipation of Easter the majority of the events have been put on hold until after the Easter week is over. I will be busy with a 2-day self-defence training for beginners with www.kravmagaireland.com, but outside of that I might do or would do the following: If you are interested in fashion the Nokia Young Fashion Designer Award exhibition in the Powerscourt Town Centre should be on your to-do list (Friday section, but not limited to Friday). On Saturday you HAVE to “do” the Earth Hour thing and switch off your lights for one hours in the evening. On Sunday the Dublin Flea Market and Shebeen Chic are always worth a visit. On Tuesday the Easter Family Fun in Henry Street (Ilac Centre and Jervis Shopping Centre) will start and on Wednesday I would LOVE to see the film that will be screened in the Instituto Cervantes. It is a film about the start of the Spanish Civil War and sounds really interesting if you are interested in Spain and its history. On Thursday the religious Easter events start and a street dramatisation of the Passion of Christ in St. Werburgh’s Church is definitely different than the usual events you find.

______Competition______________

No competition this week, but I am working on more opportunities to win prices! If you work in a company or have your own company where running a competition in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) would help to reach the 6000 readers of the Event Guide, just drop me a mail and we can discuss the details: dublineventguide@gmail.com If you organise a non-free event and want to have it listed in this Event Guide then through a competition you have the opportunity to do that.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

START YOUR OWN BUSINESS PROGRAMME
The Dublin City Enterprise Board (DCEB) is regularly running a very interesting course called “Start Your Own Business Programme”. If you do the course with the DCEB you pay around EUR 200. If you do the same course with the Business Information Centre of the Central Library, Ilac Shopping Centre, Henry St., Dublin 1 you can get it for free! It will run every Thursday (18:30-20:00) from 22 April – 27 May and is a series of lectures on how to start your own business. If you want to take part you need to book soon here 01-8733996 or businesslibrary@dublincity.ie The detailed schedule is available on www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/Events/Pages/syob_2010.aspx

SAMBA DRUMMING WITH MORRO 16
Morro 15 are looking for new band members. Morro 16 have been playing samba in Dublin since Feb 2008 and are currently looking to recruit new musicians. Their musical style is “samba batucada”, the sound of carnival in Rio and the formation is a drum corp (“bloco”) of approx 20 players. If you want to join Morro 16 contact them via morrosixteen@yahoo.ie or find more information here www.myspace.com/morrosixteen I have heard Morro16 a few times and absolutely love their music and if I had time, I would join them! :-)

DVD RENTAL ALTERNATIVE
You probably have heard about DVD Rental companies that use the shop-less approach. You order a DVD and once you have watched it you send it back again so that you can get the next. The biggest and best known company is www.screenclick.com. Today I received an e-mail telling me that now Lidl, the German supermarket chain, is offering such a DVD Rental service as well and when I investigated a little further, I found out that it is actually screenclick who is providing the service. The only difference seems to be that if you rent through Lidl, you will get the same service EUR 1 per month cheaper. www.lidlmovies.ie/ Interesting “alternative” to screenclick.com

BEAR FESTIVAL
Well, this is NOT what you might think it is, but it is a new cultural addition to life in Ireland so let me tell you about it even if the event is not free. If you are male and are interested in other men of the hairy variety, this event is for you. Suddenly you understand what the term Bear Feile means, don’t you? And with the same speed of light the majority of you will realise that this event is not for them, but it is always good to know what if happening around us. ;-) Especially if you are out in town and encounter a whole hoard of beary men. There is a Mr Bear Ireland competition (I quote: “Leather, uniform, construction or rugby-gear welcome”) and lots of other events are taking place. www.bearfeile.com/

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

AINE BELTON & SHARON WHITE – EXCHANGE GALLERY
“oddio” is a collaborative project by recent IADT graduates Áine Belton and Sharon White. The title of the project is a play on the word audio and also an appropriate term for the sound sculptures or musical instruments which the artists intend to invent. The artists will work on site de-constructing and reconfiguring materials which will then be utilised for their sound qualities. The aim of the project is to promote the every day and ordinary sounds which surround us in our environments, ranging from minimal to obtrusive. Within this, the artists will combat how a ‘noise’ can be appropriated to a higher plane of appreciation. It can be said that music exists because noise exists.
The exhibition opens at 18:30 on Fri 26 Mar and continues until Sun 28 March. A special event will take place on Sat 27 Mar from 15:00-16:30.
For further information contact oddioproject@gmail.com

(Gallery Details: Talbot Gallery, 51 Talbot Street, Dublin 1, www.talbotgallery.com, Open: Tues-Fri 10:30-17:00, Sat 10:30-14:00)

GOOD FRIDAY EVENT – URBAN OUTFITTERS
The Urban Outfitters Easter event is legendary by now. Long before rugby clubs and pub owners in Limerick tried to introduce alcohol to Good Friday, Urban Outfitters in Temple Bar were the only oasis on a dry Good Friday. The loop hole that the shop in Temple Bar used was the fact that the alcohol there is complimentary because the law only forbids SELLING alcohol on Good Friday!
However, don’t get this wrong, the Urban Outfitter event is not a get-drunk-on-Good-Friday event, instead it is an evening of fashion and music with a two hour DJ Set from “Filthy Dukes” from 19:00-21:00, during which complimentary drinks are available (while stocks last). No booking is required and admission is free, you can just come to the shop. www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=101770663196350&ref=mf

TRANSFORMING IRELAND – EARTH SCIENCES LECTURE

To find out more about upcoming lectures, contact esi.admin@ucd.ie

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

RUBGY, LIMERICK, GOOD FRIDAY AND PUBS
For a number of weeks a big discussion is going on about alcohol in Limerick on Good Friday. If you haven’t heard about it, let me give you a quick overview: Many years ago, the state has decided to put a law in place that says that you are not allowed to drink alcohol in a pub on the Friday before Easter (Good Friday) and even more so, pubs are not even allowed to open. This law was made for the catholic church and has no reason or justification in a civil context. For some odd reason the planners of rugby matches have scheduled the rugby match in Limerick between Munster and Leinster for Good Friday. The consequence would be that no alcohol will be available before, during or after this match and seemingly that can’t be. I find this whole argument odd on SOOO many levels!
I find it odd that this law still exists in today’s society. If a catholic doesn’t want to drink alcohol on Good Friday or any other day it is his good right to do so, but I don’t see why others should be prohibited to drink alcohol just because ONE religious organisation says so. (By the way: I am catholic.) However, it is very odd as well that people find it ABSOLUTELY unthinkable to enjoy a rugby match without alcohol. A judge in Limerick has now decided that pubs are allowed to open for business on Good Friday in Limerick because the match is a “Special Event”. And that is odd too! I thought the state said that Good Friday is such a Special Event that it is justified to have a special law for it. Does one Special Event now overrule the other Special Event? Odd! And why is the alcohol ban only lifted in Limerick? Leinster fans and Munster fans are possibly supporting their teams in other towns as well. Does a Special Event only take place if you can physically touch it? Why is the rugby fan in Dublin not allowed to enjoy this Special Event in his local pub? Odd!
In my opinion the Good Friday law should be scrapped, it has no place in today’s tolerant society, but it still leaves the oddness of the alcohol-needing rugby supporters. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0325/breaking36.html
