Hi all!

I SHOULD start writing the Event Guide at 19:00 on a Thursday, so that approx. 15 hours later at around 10:00 it arrives in your Inbox. BUT, for some reason there are always interesting events taking place on a Thursday and as a consequence I start a LOT later than I should. Last night I went to the European Young Professionals (EYP) event in the Hibernian Club on St. Stephen’s Green. The topic was “Ideas in Action! – Turn your business ideas into reality” and in addition to interesting talks by 6 entrepreneurs, there was a competition: 8 Teams had 15 minutes to invent a business idea and then had to present their idea to the 6 “EYP Dragons”. An interesting challenge! After 15 minutes it looked bad, the little team I was in had a number of ideas, but it was hard to put them into a profitable structure. Well, some major improvisation during the presentation followed and we won the main price of the evening! Yippee! ;-) EYP events have a new theme every time, but if you get a chance, go to them. They are fun! ;-) The next one is on 20 May and I will tell you about it beforehand.

This weekend doesn’t really bring us many big events. There are a few nice things like the Oscar Wilde Parade on Saturday or the Story Telling workshop if that interests you and definitely the Japan Day in Farmleigh House on Sunday. But otherwise it might be a weekend where going for a walk in the spring weather could be an interesting alternative to indoor events. On Monday the Trinity (TCD) Week with some very interesting events starts and on Tuesday the highlight of the week is the Haendel Day. It is just a pity that this day is on a Tuesday when most people will miss all events. If you have time and don’t work, then go for the “Messiah on the Street” at 13:00 in Fishamble Street. For the last 2 years it rained on that day, maybe this time will be better.

CASTLEPALOOZA MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL – COMPETITION

MOUNTAIN SAFETY TRAINING – COMPETITION
The Adventure Company “Outdoors Ireland” is running a Mountain Safety Promotion in the Wicklow Mountains on 11+18 April, in conjunction with the Great Outdoors Store in Dublin. The fun and intensive half-day workshops will give hill walkers the opportunity to learn map reading skills, develop safety awareness, take compass bearings and deal with emergencies. Hiking Boots are provided and everybody from beginner to expert is welcome. RYANAIR HAPPILY SCREWS YOU
Definitely not known for customer service or customer care, Ryanair seems to reach new lows. On Tuesday Ryanair announced that the baggage charges for check-in baggage on Ryanair flights will be increased by EUR 5 from EUR 15 to EUR 20 in July and August. www.rte.ie/business/2010/0406/ryanair.html Why, you wonder? Why only for 2 months and exactly during the time when parents travel with children where hand luggage only is not an option? It seems the answer is: Because they can!! :-/ Since Ryanair just two weeks ago terminated the flight to “my” local airport in Karlsruhe-Baden my tolerance for Ryanair’s customer ignorance was already at its limit. But surprisingly they do manage to get worse and worse.

THE DUBLINER GOING free
The Dubliner was for many years an independent monthly magazine that was sold in newsagents, most recently for EUR 2. This was changed completely! Now The Dubliner is a free weekly add-on to the Evening Herald on Thursdays.
I don’t know about you, but I was surprised about this decision. The Evening Herald is not exactly the newspaper that I would have linked with The Dubliner. Additionally I am wondering if a) The Dubliner was convinced by the Evening Herald people to help improving the sales of the newspaper or if b) The Dubliner was in difficulty and moving from independent to a free add-on was the best way to save the magazine? ONE CITY, ONE BOOK: THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY
2010 is the fifth year of the Dublin: One City, One Book project, designed to encourage everyone in the city to read the same book during the month of April each year. The project promotes reading in a city which boasts one of the world’s greatest literary heritages. Dublin: One City One Book is a Dublin City Council initiative led by the City Library Service in association with Penguin Books, Dublin BIDS, The Irish Times and Dublin Tourism. The ‘Dublin: One City, One Book’ choice for April 2010 is “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Dubliner Oscar Wilde, which was first published in 1890. Yes, we still can’t believe it! SPANISH COURSE – IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS IN REAL SITUATIONS

MIXING BOWL STORY TELLING WORKSHOP
The Mixing Bowl is a workshop group for storytellers and story enthusiasts to build their story writing and telling skills. For the first time storyteller, the Mixing Bowl will provide a friendly environment in which you can build your confidence before you take to the stage at our event! For the practiced performer, it will be a great place for you to get some feedback on your work. During the next workshop, story writing and telling will be explored through exercises and games. The workshop will be facilitated by storyteller Adam Wilson and writer Sarah Griffin.

EXPERIENCE JAPAN DAY – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
On Sun 11 Apr the Experience Japan Day will take place in Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park. Hanami or ‘flower viewing’ is the renowned Japanese custom of
enjoying the beauty of sakura or ‘cherry blossoms’ in spring. Crowds of people – family and friends – come together for outdoor parties to welcome the new season and celebrate the beauty of nature. SUNDAY AT NOON CONCERT – HUGH LANE GALLERY
Nearly every Sunday a free “Sunday at Noon” concert is taking place in the Hugh Lane Gallery. From 12:00-13:00 classical music will be performed for free. No booking is required. HANDEL’S DAY 2010
On Tues 13 Apr this year’s Handel Celebrations will take place. The Temple Bar Cultural Trust has announced the details of the programme for “In Handel’s Day” to celebrate George Friedrich Händel and his connections to Dublin. The day long celebration includes the famous Messiah on the Street performance as well as additional free activity featuring music and history from 18th century Dublin that will appeal to all ages. On 13 Apr 1742, Handel’s Messiah, one of the most famous musical pieces in the world, premiered on Fishamble Street in Temple Bar and each year the streets and surrounding areas are filled with the sounds from Our Lady’s Choral Society as they sing excerpts from Handel’s Messiah. New events this year include a special performance, A Global Hallelujah, by three Dublin national schools, traditional Irish music and an outdoor Movie on Meeting House Square Barry Lyndon (1975) which is regarded as one of Stanley Kubricks finest films depicting the 18th Century period. SAMUEL BECKETT – PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION

INSIGHT DEBATE – THE PUBLIC SECTOR
On Thu 15 April from 18:00-20:00 the “Insight Debates: The Public Sector Debate” will take place in the National College of Ireland in the IFSC. This free public event series is designed to elevate and enliven public discussion on the major topical issues of the day. ANDREA DURBACH – FOMACS PUBLIC INTERVIEW
The Forum on Migration and Communications (www.fomacs.org) at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) is inviting to a public interview with Andrea Durbach, Director of the Australian Human Rights Centre at the Faculty of Law, University of New South Wales, Australia. Mary Fitzgerald, Foreign Affairs Correspondent for The Irish Times, will conduct the interview.
Andrea Durbach is visiting Dublin to participate in a FOMACS/British Council public education project in association with Instituto Cervantes, titled Learning Lab: Identities and Social Justice.
Currently living in Sydney but originally from South Africa, Andrea Durbach is best known for her public interest law work. Her book ‘Upington’ (2002) reflects on her experience of when in 1988 she was appointed solicitor to 25 black defendants in a notorious death penalty case in South Africa.
The public interview and conversation between Andrea Durbach and Mary Fitzgerald will be held at the PILA (Public Interest Law Alliance) symposium Public interest law in action – using the law to face current challenges.

IF A SYSTEM IS WORKING…FIGHT IT!!??
I am sure you have read that you and I each will have a debt caused by the bailed out banks of more than 27,000 Euro. Apart from some greed, some over-exaggerated expectations of what success is in good times, some seriously dodgy and maybe even criminal behaviour of bankers the problem was caused to a large degree by a totally incapable regulator of the financial sector who either didn’t see what was going on or didn’t want to see it. The bad and dodgy regulator got fired, got an incredible farewell gift (probably for his “good work”) of EUR 200,000 and was replaced. A new regulator was appointed and the new guy looked at lots of companies it seems and found out that Quinn Insurance is in some trouble because the money that they have available is less then they should have. To me it seems this new regulator did a good job! But wait! What happened next? As soon as Quinn was in administration (means some external administrators will check if the company is still ok to continue or if maybe it should be wound down) the employees started to protest. I can understand that because they were made believe that all was well with the company and they didn’t want to see their company to get in trouble which could put their jobs at risk. But what I don’t get is how suddenly politicians attacked the regulator! Was it not exactly the influence of politicians that supported the previous corrupt or at least broken system? And should they not applaud a regulator that takes his job serious? I find it odd!
