Wow! I am overwhelmed with the positive and supportive feedback I got after describing the new challenge regarding the name of this Event Guide. Lots of suggestions were sent to me and I will share them with you next week and want you to tell me which you prefer. Once a new and suitable name has been decided by all of you, I will most likely replace “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” with this new name and that should remove the concerns of “the event guide” – I hope. And more good news: Michelle Cunningham has offered to design a logo for the Event Guide once we have decided on a name and I REALLY like the idea and appreciate it! It is sooo nice to see that you all are part of the community and are prepared and willing to help, it confirms to me that the time and effort writing this weekly newsletter is well spent! Thanks!

Last week was a really good one. I am STILL buzzing from the seminar “Breakthrough to Success” at the weekend before and I saw that a good few of you have already registered for the seminar on 17-19 October. I will definitely take part in the October seminar again and as it looks at the moment, we will probably be 50-70 (!!) people from the Dublin Event Guide Community! That would be great! Have you ever heard about the Improv Everywhere movement? Improv Everywhere started in New York and is a group of people which executes pre-planned “missions” which usually involve socially awkward or unusual situations. Brian Lenehan, a friend and enthusiastic Event Guide Community member, had the great idea to start an Improve group in Dublin and he created a facebook group for it www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=25475730832 Last Saturday the first Dublin Improv event happened and it was the “Grafton Street Freeze”. I was part of it and it was loads of fun. Nobody knows exactly how many people took part, but my guess is that it was in the region of 100 people. Now imagine, 100 people in Grafton Street suddenly “freezing” on a Saturday afternoon. No movement, nothing, for 5 minutes. And as soon as the 5 minutes were up, all continued like before as if nothing had happened! Great idea, Brian!! It was harmless fun and an ad-hoc art installation. ;-) There is more to come and occasionally, but not always I will announce events here in the Event Guide so that you can take part if you want.

KIKOMO – TANZANIA CHARITY GIG
Ann Bassett, a member of the Event Guide community, is organising a charity event for the Tanzanian NGO (Non-Government Organisation) Hapa, which plans, constructs and supports community initiated building projects and health infrastructure projects. The event is called KiKoMo and all proceeds go to the charity. The evening is filled with activities and events. The DJs “Jimmy B” of DownTownSounds and “Paolo Alves” will spin the discs. Live events and contributors are The Royal Irish Milk Float, a Capoeira Display and the “edge” photography exhibition (incl. Richie Hatch). KiKoMo is taking place at 21:30 on Fri 07 Mar in the IFI in Eustace Street, Temple Bar. Tickets are EUR 15, but Ann has made a pair of tickets available for a reader of the Event Guide. KILA IN CONCERT
Áras Chrónáin, the Irish Cultural Centre in Clondalkin will present Kila in concert on Sat 08 March at 20:00 (Doors at 19:45 and you better arrive on time!). The supporting act is Junah and I was impressed when I heard them recently. Tickets for this event are EUR 18 and to book tickets you should send a mail to eolas@araschronain.com or ring 01-4574847. There is only a limited number of tickets available so ring soon. A few weeks ago Brían Ó Gáibhín invited me to Áras Chrónáin and it is a really great concert venue: Not huge, which creates a quite intimate concert atmosphere; full of lots of friendly people and very very welcoming. If you don’t know Kila, have a look at www.kila.ie. They play Irish Traditional music with some influences from Eastern Europe and are really really good. If you miss the concert in Áras Chrónáin you will either have to go to Barcelona a few days later or to the Olympia around St. Patrick’s Day and believe me, these alternative concerts will cost you a LOT more. So make sure you go to Áras Chrónáin on the 08 March. RUSH HOUR RECITAL No. 4 – CLASSICAL MUSIC
”Rush Hour Recital” – the fourth in a series of recitals hosted by the Students’ Union of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. This free recital will feature performances from some of Ireland’s most promising musicians. It will take place on 29 Feb from 18:30-19:30 in the Katherine Brennan Hall of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Westland Row. If you go to the recital first and then drive home you will have avoided the rush hour traffic jams AND will have had an enjoyable hour of classical music after work :-) Queries can be sent to riamsu@gmail.com. ITALIAN POETRY EVENING
The Istituto Italiano di Cultura together with the Italian Department at the Trinity College is organising this Poetry Evening on Fri 29 Feb from 18:00. The event will take place on the first floor of the Institute on Fitzwilliam Street and will be introduced by the Italian literary critic Andrea Ortelessa (University of Roma Tre). A number of well-known contemporary Italian poets will be participating as well: Antonella Anedda, Maria Attanasio, Riccardo Duranti. Together with them their Anglo-Irish colleagues and translators: Eilean Ni Chuilleanain, Jamie McKendrick, Iggy McGovern. A performance of dance and mime will be held during the evening and a wine reception will follow.

TOURS DE FRANCE – FRENCH TOURISM EVENT
Rendezvous at Tours de France 2008, the French travel & cultural event, is taking place in the Round Room at the Mansion House in Dawson Street on Fri+Sat. You can ask the experts at over 35 information stands manned by hoteliers, tourist boards and golf resorts about holidays in France. FAS OPPORTUNITIES – JOB FAIR
The Croke Park Conference Centre next to the Croke Park Stadium will be the home for the FAS Opportunities Exhibition from Fri 29 – Mon 03 March. This exhibition is for all job seekers or for anybody who is thinking about a career change or about expanding and adding skills. www.fasopportunities.ie Opening hours are Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat+Sun 12:00-17:00 and Mon 10:00-15:00. Admission is free. 100 exhibitors will help you with your questions about jobs and job opportunities and a lot of them have job openings available. Up to 90,000 visitors (!!!) are expected to visit the exhibition, so it will be busy. The website lists all the exhibitors and gives tips on how to prepare for a visit. In addition there are some guides available on the website in the “Seminar” (Hmmm!?) section.

ANDY DEVANE EXHIBITION
The Istituto Italiano di Cultura is showing a solo exhibition by the Irish artist Andy Devane. It includes paintings inspired by the artistic heritage of Ancient Rome. “Devane’s canvasses capture many of the colours of Tuscany from the burned earth of Siena, the grey of the local stone, the carmine, and cypress green.”
The exhibition will be on show from 26 Feb-10 Mar and the opening hours are Mon-Fri 15:00-17:00. The Istituto Italiano di Cultura is in 11 Fitzwilliam Square East.

BEYOND THE PALE – PHOTO EXHIBITION
From 27 Feb-31 May the National Photographic Archive presents an exhibition of Irish Life outside Dublin between 1850 and 1980. It is titled “Beyond the Pale” and takes place in the National Photographic Archive in Temple Bar just opposite the Temple Bar Cultural Centre at the main entrance to the Meeting House Square. Admission is free and the opening hours are Mon-Fri: 10:00-17:00, Sat: 10:00-14:00. (Closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays).

JUGGLING FIRE SHOW – TEMPLE BAR
Over this weekend the Dublin Juggling Convention is PROBABLY taking place. I say “probably” because it seems that the organisers are not as organised as some participants would like them to be. It seems that the event is mainly taking place in DIT and that there is a charge for participating, but it SEEMS as well that there MIGHT be a Fireshow on Friday evening in Temple Bar. It will probably start at 19:30 or 20:00 somewhere near the Temple Bar Square or the Meeting House Square and it COULD be free. (If it is Temple Bar Square, I expect it will definitely be free to watch.) Might? Could? Probably? I am sure they juggle better than they organise!!! Hopefully!! ;-)))) www.emeraldcircus.com

PAYSAGES, PAYS SAGES – PHOTO EXHIBITION
Samuel Chantoiseau is a French photographer now established in Cork since 2006. His work focuses on reportage in black and white and he has regularly visited the Sahara and has stayed there for a few months at a time. While in the Sahara Samuel experienced profound moments of closeness with the Touaregs. He has captured these images while travelling these magnificent desert lands where Touaregs live and move in the depths of this mysterious environment. The exhibition is on show from 27 Feb-02 Apr in The Alliance Francaise, 1 Kildare Street, D2. Opening hours are Mon-Fri 09:00-19:30 and Sat 09:00 to 13:00.

NIAMH O’MALLEY EXHIBITION
Niamh O’Malley exhibits from 27 Feb – 04 Apr at the Temple Bar Gallery her artwork “A Situation, A Situation, and A Story”. The few sample pictures that I saw look impressive and if you are in Temple Bar during the opening hours of the gallery, a visit might be a good idea. DEARCADH – EOIN MAC LOCHLAINN EXHIBITION
“Dearcadh”, meaning look, outlook or foresight is the title of Eoin Mac Lochlainn’s first solo show at The Paul Kane Gallery. It will run from 29 Feb to 22 Mar and contains very impressive portrait paintings. I had a look at the exhibition last night and if you find some time I would recommend a visit. Especially the pictures “Mute” and “Numb” are remarkable. Brilliantly painted and highly expressive, they are worth going to The Paul Kane Gallery in 6 Merrion Square. The gallery opening hours are Tues-Fri 11:00-18:00 and Sat 12:00-17:00.

DJ EVENTS – GENERAL COMMENT
Since there are a LOT of DJ “events” every weekend and because I can’t mention all of them, I usually leave them out completely. Not because they are not worthy of being mentioned, but just because it would push this Event Guide in a different direction. However, since this is a community, members of the community do get a special mentioning and if they even help/contribute, they get even more “airtime”. Cathal “Carlos” Dunne has taken the time to give some advise regarding the (legal) name challenge that I described last week. Thanks for that! By the way, I have neither replied to your mail nor to Shimmy’s, but I will! ;-) …Oh, that is something for everyone: I get lots of mails and am trying to reply to everyone, but it sometimes takes a little longer. MOTHERS DAY IN DUNDRUM
Remember that Sunday is Mother’s Day in Ireland. If you are not Irish, remember that the Mother’s Day in most other countries in the world is in early May, but I am sure your mother wouldn’t complain it you think of her TWICE in one year! :-)

SCIENCE GALLERY
Last chance to see the “Lightwave” exhibition in the Science Gallery. It will close on the 01 March until then you can see the exhibition from 17:00-21:00 from Tues-Sun.

TOTALLY SWEDISH FESTIVAL
From the 26 Feb-02 Mar, the Totally Swedish Festival is taking place in and around Temple Bar. Concerts in the Button Factory, Food in restaurants in the area and Films in the Irish Film Institute are Swedish themed. The only free event, however, is an art exhibition showcasing the work of talented Swedish Artists at the Sebastian Guinness Gallery (18 Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2) from 26th February until 9th March. www.swedishfestival.ie/art.html

AFTERTHOUGHTS – TALKS
On Sat 01 Mar an Allday Event will take place in Green On Red, 26-28 Lombard St. East, Dublin 2. (info@greenonredgallery.com or +353 1 671 3414). This event is a one day seminar organised by Dennis McNulty to coincide with his show framework/ rupture at Green on Red Gallery, Dublin. A day of talks and discussion on topics related to the aftermath of construction – considering the urban environment, how we intervene in it and attempt to understand it.
Five speakers will give presentations from practical and theoretical perspectives, ranging across a number of disciplines. François Chastanet will present his research drawn from his book “Pixação – São Paulo Signature”, which deals with a form of graffiti specific to the Brazilian city of São Paulo. Owen Drumm will deal with the practicalities involved in acoustically treating existing spaces to reduce excessive reverberation. Ros Kavanagh will present a series of specially taken photographs illustrating ideas relating photography and time. Riklef Rambow will introduce the idea of Post Occupancy Evaluation, which involves returning to structures after occupation to study how they are actually used, and Ellen Rowley will give a slide talk based on her research into the culture and discourses of Dublin’s post-war architecture, dealing specifically with the seventies.
There will also be a screening of a digitised copy of ‘The Big Bank’, a 16mm film commissioned by Sisks documenting the construction of The Central Bank building on Dublin’s Dame Street.

SUNDAY AT NOON – CLASSICAL MUSIC
Again the Hugh Lane Gallery is inviting to Sunday at Noon. This week the National Chamber Choir (with conductor Brian MacKay) is singing songs along the theme “Something Rich and Strange”. The concert in the Hugh Lane Gallery (Parnell Square North) starts at 12:00 and goes on for one hour. It is free and allows you to enjoy classical music for no cost.

Thomas Reads at the corner of Parliament Street with Dame Street is offering “Sunday Roast”, winner of best show at The Fringe Festival’s Spiegeltent 2006. The Sunday Roast crew serves an eclectic weekly dish of free live music, games & roast potatoes from 19:00.

BRAZILIAN MUSIC LIVE – ODEON
Every Sunday from 17:00-22:00 the Odeon (Harcourt Street) has Brazilian Music with a Live Band and later with a DJ at this Pub which was originally a train station for the Harcourt Line. Admission is free from 17:00-22:00.

DJ CARLOS EVENT
Every Sunday (22:30-04:00) “IrieLand @ The Turks Head” takes place. It is a “weekly reggae meltdown featuring Irelands top live reggae acts, djs and mcs alongside international guests. Roots, dub and fusion reggae rocks the basement of the Turks Head ’til 4am.” The Turks Head is in Parliament Street (Temple Bar, Dublin 2). Admission is EUR 5 after 23:30. ASNE SEIERSTAD IN CONVERSATON
The Norwegian journalist Asne Seierstad who wrote the book “The Bookseller of Kabul” and who is a war correspondent who reported from Kosovo, Chechnya, and Afghanistan will be in the National Library as part of the NLI’s “Can Newspapers Survive?” series of events. This will be on Wed 5 Mar at 20:00.

CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE
Trócaire is offering a chance to hear two speakers provide a powerful insight and expertise on the real impact of climate change. Trócaire’s speaker’s tour “Climate Change: Voices from the Developing World” brings Dr. Dominic Walubengo from Kenya and Martha Yvette Aguilar from El Salvador to Ireland to offer a unique and powerful perspective from two of the countries directly affected by climate change.
The speakers are visiting Ireland as part of Trócaire’s ADMIT campaign which is asking Ireland and the UK to act now by supporting vital climate adaptation measures in the developing world and urgently reducing their own carbon emissions. From 03-17 March is Seachtain na Gaeilge (which I, with my seriously limited Irish knowledge, translate as “Irish Week”) and there is even website www.snag.ie that attempts to provide a central point for all events and event notifications. ST PATRICK’S DAY – PEARL
St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and I will tell you a good bit more about all the activities, but here is one event where you have to get tickets as soon as possible if you want to see the performance.
The Irish premiere of “Pearl” by the world renowned street theatre company Plasticiens Volants (France) is taking place at 19:30 in the Dublin Docklands on 14+15 March. The description says “This is an outdoor spectacle for a family audience. ST. PATRICKS DAY MADNESS
I have to mention this, even if it requires another paragraph: Imagine you invite loads of people to a party and they all come to your house. Where would you have the music? In your house or in your friends house in the next street?? — In their wisdom the organisers of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day seem to have decided that the place where hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world will spend the long weekend is NOT the right place to have one of the main events of the weekend! The Skyfest (a gigantic fireworks synchronised to music and fired from boats in the Liffey and from the quays), which has been for years a huge attraction and – while still surpassed by the parade – is definitely the second highest crowd attraction, is this year taken place in… TIPPERARY! I couldn’t believe it when I heard it! Sure the people living outside of Dublin should get a decent Patrick’s Day party too, but to move one of the biggest events to the Rock of Cashel in Co. Tipperary is just shocking! Oh and if you want to see it, you need to get TICKETS! Amazing! More about the events where millions of people are, i.e in Dublin, in the next two weeks!
