Hi all!

How was your summer? On Saturday at 15:49, the (astronomical) summer will be over and I am STILL waiting for a proper summer to start. 12 degrees in Dublin yesterday! Brrr! But I guess we are lucky: A Polish newspaper showed the first snow pictures from the Polish mountains (wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/1,114871,12517621,Snieg_w_Tatrach__Na_Mazurach_przygruntowe_przymrozki.html ). It had snowed 8cm on Thursday morning.

For all of us, who like all different types of events, it means that events will move inside, festivals will come to an end and as soon as the (outside) Oktoberfest is over, there is not much happening outside until the Christmas Markets (only about 11 weeks away!).

But before we give up completely on outside events, the last ditch attempt to light up the town is today’s Culture Night. Most events are inside, but the city centre will still be full of people moving from one event to the next. Culture night starts at 17:00 in most locations and continues until 22:00 or 23:00. Get out, enjoy the culture in Dublin and have a great evening![ad]

Every week, lots and lots of people join our Dublin Event Guide Community. Over the last few months, there are regularly more than 500 new subscribers every month and since all this is only due to your great help by telling all your friends, I am blown away by it and am very grateful for your help. This week again lots of people (including a very large group of Brazilians. Muito Bem Vindo!) have joined our community. You are all very very welcome! Thank the person that told you about the Dublin Event Guide by telling even more people about it. The more people we are, the better the Dublin Event Guide gets because we are now a community event organisers are very much aware off and consider when they plan events.

To let your friends know, send them to www.dublineventguide.com they can subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) on the right hand side. Please also tell your parents or other older people, they are currently underrepresented and it would be great to let them know about all free events as well!

And thanks also for your donations. As you know, the sponsors and your donations keep the Dublin Event Guide going. My 30 hours per week working on the Dublin Event Guide are given to you for free, but I need you to help me covering the cost of EUR 170 per month. If you can help with a donation, go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm You can subscribe for EUR 12 per year or just give any amount as a donation.

If you can’t help, you will still get the Dublin Event Guide every week, but I need you then to help spreading the word even more! Get your friends to subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide People should also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on the Facebook Page. Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.

My plan was to get a good video clip this week again for this section, it has been a while, but instead I found a quote that I want to share with you. It should be your motto for next week… or why don’t you just claim it for the next month!!!

The question is not who is going to let you. The question is who is going to stop you!

Are you waiting for others (boss, partner, friends, parents?) to let you do or achieve something and it just doesn’t happen? Now you know what you need to do! Just do it!!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Geraldine R, Stephen-Eamonn D, Rhona D, Paul D, Jasmin B, Caroline M, Stephen S were the wonderful people that get my THANKS! and that should get your appreciation too because they helped the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Your support is much appreciated!!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and help!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need to “find” EUR 170 per month to cover the cost and anything above will be invested in improving the Dublin Event Guide!).

BTW: If you see advertisement in the Dublin Event Guide and think that should pay loads, then I need to explain that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So use the ad links EVERY time you want to purchase something.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down

This week I am in a hurry! Otherwise I will miss part of Culture Night and we don’t want that! :-) So Culture Night on Friday. On Saturday the “In Town without my car” events, the Urban Art Festival and maybe just for the fun, the Sword Fight “Flash Mob” will get my time. On Sunday the Busking Competition in Ranelagh and the Okoberfest are for me. Next week, have a look at the MSF Cholera Tent on Monday, maybe a Merrion Square Event before they are over and then on Thursday the much improved Arthur’s Day.

Now, quick, getting that mail out to you so that I can go to Culture Night! Enjoy!

Women’s Self Defence Course for Charity

Some of you know that I teach self-defence classes at ww.kravmagaireland.com , one of my other hobbies. ;-) Patrick Cumiskey, who runs Krav Maga Ireland is also the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide and these two things together is reason enough for me to tell you about a great thing Patrick is doing. He will go to Haiti to help re-build houses because a huge amount of people there are still homeless more than 2.5 years after the devastating earthquake.

To raise money for building materials for Haiti, Patrick is running a 1-day Self-Defence Course exclusively for women. It will take place on 06 Oct and will teach how to defend against the specific types of assault that can happen to women. This course is suitable for people who have never taken a self defence course before, but even if you have trained with us previously or have done some other course, you will benefit hugely and will learn new things. First you will learn how to avoid being a victim and how to stay safe. Then you will practice the relevant types of escapes. Krav Maga is an extremely effective and easy to learn self-defence system and no matter what your level of fitness is, you will be able to do that course. The fee for the whole day is just EUR 65 and you get a further reduction when you come with your friends. So, if you are female and know that you need to do something to increase your safety or if you know a woman or girl that needs to know how to behave in a dangerous situation, then check out www.kravmagaireland.ie/self-defence-for-women/ or ring Patrick directly on 087 2390398

European Mobility Week

Did you know that the European Mobility Week is taking place since 16 Sept and will end on 22 Sept. Ireland is – according to the Department of the Environment, a strong supporter, but it seems that the Mobility Week was a well kept secret. Last year it was all different! A number of events were planned throughout the different parts of Dublin. This year? Not much! Dublin’s contribution as posted on the European Mobility Website ( www.mobilityweek.eu/cities/?ci=ie_yv4xmrk1&year=2012 ) is shockingly void of anything interesting. Dublin City Council claims the PARK(ing) Day as one of their contributions, but that event is NOT planned by Dublin City. And the Car Free Day, now called “In Town without my Car Day” will see Dame Court and Fade Street being pedestrianised on Sunday with “a range of activities is planned based around family fun for younger children and their parents. Picnics and alfresco dining with games and entertainment.” Don’t expect much! The Dublin City Events Calendar at www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/Events/Documents/Events_Calendar_2012.pdf doesn’t even mention the Mobility Week or the “In Town without my Car Day” and the Press Release here www.dublincity.ie/Press/PressReleases/PR0912/Pages/DublinMovingintheRightDirectionforMobilityWeek.aspx confirms that the event will mot likely be hugely underwhelming!

Clery’s in receivership and out again

The Clery’s / Guiney’s story caused a good bit of confusion last week. One day Clery’s was put in receivership and the next day they were sold. And then Guiney’s was closed, but once it was announced, it turned out that there were TWO completely separate Guiney’s, who are even in the same street! So what happened? – The story is not too complicated when you know some background.
Clerys opened in 1853 as one of the world’s first purpose-built department stores and in 1941 it was taken over by the Guiney family. But it was owned by Denis Guiney Ltd and there is a Michael Guiney who was not involved with Clery’s. The Guiney shops owned by Clery’s were deemed to be unsave-able and were closed down. The negotiations about Clery’s most likely went on for quote some time before and it was probably agreed that the receiver would close down the Guiney shops and only after that the new owner, an American investment company, will take over Clery’s.
Because TWO Guiney shops are in Talbot Street (actually it is even THREE!), all went complicated. Here www.thejournal.ie/guineys-closed-down-talbot-street-599299-Sep2012/ you find an illustrated explanation. Bottom line: Dublin’s most chaotic shop, the Guiney shop with the orange/white sign with the G is a Michael Guiney shop and will stay open. It is an odd shop, but you sometimes (oddly ;-) ) find something in it that you wouldn’t have found elsewhere. All clear? :-)

Third level education fees – Bad Decision!

The Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, has confirmed that the Third Level Education fees in Ireland will increase from a current EUR 2,250 to EUR 3,000 per year by 2015. In my opinion that is an absolutely wrong decision. Ireland needs to generate a LOT of money in the coming decades to fill all the wholes that have (been) opened up and introducing hurdles to education is a very bad decision. The previous government was a disaster for Ireland, but the current doesn’t seem to make anything better. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/0919/breaking58.html

Opportunities

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sculpture in Context

Thurs 06 Sept – Fri 19 Oct

National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9

This exhibition will continue until 19 Oct, but I will mention it this week for the last time:

Sculpture in Context is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and is held in the in National Botanic Gardens for the 11th year.
Each year a different panel of selectors is invited to adjudicate this open exhibition, resulting in an interesting mix of mediums and styles.
The exhibition extends throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitor Centre. Admission is free.

Dublin Contemptibles – DC2

13-30 Sept

Dublin Markets Quarter (near Four Courts)

I don’t know what I am doing wrong, but I still have difficulties “getting” this event/exhibition.Is it an exhibition or a sequence of events? What is the idea behind it? Check the website, maybe you will get it! ;-)

The description says:
“‘DC2: Gentrify THIS!’ is a two-and-a-half-week long celebration of Dublin’s Markets Quarter through creative practice. Over 25 high-profile artists based in Dublin and further afield will present their take on gentrification through a variety of media from photography to installations to outdoors engagement.”

And there are some events
Fri 21 Sept (Culture Night):
+ 17:00 Opening of exhibition venues
+ 18:00 ReCapitalise Tir na nOg with Elaine Garde; More information on this wonderful event here!

The photography exhibition, ‘Taking Action. Saving Lives’, will run as part of the first ever MSF Ireland Week, organised by the Irish office of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). The exhibition will feature images taken by Michael Lavelle when he travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to research a feature film. As well as Michael Lavelle’s images, a number of photographs of Irish MSF volunteers will be exhibited. The exhibition will run from 23-30 Sept at the Powerscourt Centre on South William Street and Fixx Coffeehouse on Dawson Street, Dublin 2.

Best of Belfast

18 Sept – 19 Oct

darc space (dublin architecture space), 26 North Great George’s Street, Dublin 1

“Best of Belfast” is a shared show of thoughts and ideas from two schools of architecture student projects from the University of Ulster and Queens University Belfast are shown. At a time when Belfast has seen the completition of two new remarkable buildings that reshape the city, both culturally and physically – the MAC and the Lyric Theatre – there has never been a better time to imagine a new sense of urbanity and civic life, and to register the important role that architecture plays in all our lives.

Festival of Urban Art

10:00 – 18:00, Fri 21 Sep

Blackthorn Drive, Sandyford Industrial Estate, Dublin 18

The Festival of Urban Art is taking place in Sandyford Industrial Estate, Co. Dublin this weekend and it is an interesting sounding project.

Sandyford Industrial Estate has its fair share of ‘distressed’ or unfinished properties and one of them, Sipter on Blackthorn Drive, is in the process of being partly completed and a new boulevard and park will form an important amenity for the residents and workers of the area. The project was designed by award winning firm, Smith and Kennedy Architects, and is being funded by NAMA as part of an overall strategy to bring the planned development to an acceptable condition.

16 Street Artists from 5 different countries are involved and they will decorate the hoarding along the new boulevard.

The website claims “the artists will run workshops for children and other activities will be organised to celebrate the creation of a new public space. A timetable of activities will be posted on the FUAS website.” Unfortunately, however, there is no further information to be found on the website.

A Minute of Silence – World Peace Festival

11:30 – 12:30, Fri 21 Sep

Trinity College, Dublin 2

The World Peace Weekend Festival in Dublin will take place around the International Day of Peace, from Fri 21 – Sun 23 Sept. “Instruments of Peace” is the charity foundation that will organise and run the events in Dublin. In 2010, they had a very successful event at The Helix, the “Four Seasons of Peace” Concert and last year they had two impactful events at The Convention Centre Dublin reaching 2,000 people.

This year they are celebrating a “World Peace Weekend Festival” which starts with the observance of the U.N. One Minute of Silence at 12:00 on Fri 21 Sept. Ireland’s observance will be televised live by the U.N. through the UN PEACE DAY LIVE.TV.

+ The Opening Ceremony (11:30-12:30) in Dublin at Trinity College will be “A Minute of Silence, A Moment of Peace” and students and everybody else is invited to participate in a World Record attempt of 1,000 people to hold hands for One Minute of Silence. (Guinness Book of Records will adjudicate this event. Currently the record holder is Hiroshima in Japan, with 600 people holding hands for one minute in silence for Peace in May 2012.)

+ On Saturday 22 Sept, a Peace Conference will take place in the Mansion House from 11:00-15:30

+ On Sunday 23 Sept, the Closing Ceremony will take place in the Westin Hotel (16:00-18:00) and is entitled “Women of Spirit, Women of Peace”.

Erdinger Oktoberfest

12:00 – 00:30, Fri 21 Sep

George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1

The Erdinger Oktoberfest is starting earlier than planned, it seems. Initially planned to start on 27 Sept, it now already kicks off on Thurs 20 Sept and will continue until 07 Oct. The beer tent and the FULL selection of food is only available on George’s Dock, but the “passenger” number permitted on the platform in George’s Dock are soo stringent, that every year a long queue formed from around 18:00 (sometimes even earlier). Luckily there is some food and beer also available in the area next to the chq Building, but you won’t have music there and some foods are not available there either.

The Oktoberfest has been extremely popular in previous years and I don’t expect that to change, so expect big crowds…and enjoy the beer and food. After 22:00 a very odd wristband system is in place. Allegedly due to Irish licensing laws you have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 and you get a EUR 5 voucher for “a substantial meal” with it. (EUR 1 goes to a charity). The odd part is that this system only seems to apply to people who are on the George’s Dock platform and also it seems that only the person buying alcoholic drinks got checked for it in previous years. Make of this what you will. ;-)

Note: Only cash, no credit or Laser cards will be accepted.

PARK(ing) Day

12:00 – 20:00, Fri 21 Sep

Dublin (various locations)

Park(ing) Day is a yearly worldwide event, that reclaims parking space for the use of the people living in the City. For that one day citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. Last year was the first year of Dublin’s participation and 15 Parking Spaces were turned into mini parks and lots of other things.

A whole range of organisations, including GoCar, See Change – the National Mental Health Stigma Reduction Partnership, the Irish Green Building Council, the Improvised Music Company, DIT Environment & Planning, the Dublin Cycling Campaign and many others will be on the streets turning car parks into public parks. It looks as if there will be 27 participants which would definitely be a strong show from Dublin.

A map is at www.dublinparkingday.org/ and if you want to follow the events on Twitter, use @ParkingDayDub

Look out for the spaces and enjoy the quirkiness of the idea.

Culture Night 2012

17:00 – 23:00, Fri 21 Sep

Dublin (various locations)

Culture Night is a brilliant night of free culture for all the family all over Dublin. For one night only the city’s museums, galleries, churches, historic houses, artists studios, cultural centres and more, will open their doors late for a night of free entertainment, discovery and adventure. Hundreds of talks, tours, performances and events will be organised for you and thousands will be out in the City to enjoy it and take it all in.

There are tooo many events to list them all here, but the great thing is that there is a good website that provides exactly that. Go to the Dublin section of the website at www.culturenight.ie/explore-the-night/ to find all events sorted by the part of the City you want to. There is also an iPhone and Android app available for free that will help you to find our way around all events throughout the night.

I will include a small selection of events in the Friday section if this Dublin Event Guide, to give you some ideas and recommendations, but I strongly recommend that you spend some time checking the schedule before Friday night and then pick a few things that you want to experience. The downloadable Culture Night programme is here www.culturenight.ie/wp-content/uploads/culture-web.pdf

I won’t link to the different destinations I can recommend, but I am sure you will find them. What I either enjoyed in previous years or would like to go to this year or in the future are:

Kilmainham Gaol (very long queues), Trinity Library/Book of Kells (very long queues), Leinster House, Freemason’s Hall (expect queues), Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublinia (very long queues), St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The places with long queues need you to be there early. There are plenty of other places that are also interesting, but since some are not open during the year OR cost money normally, they are particularly popular.

The Cork-based Quiet Music Ensemble and newly-founded Kirkos Ensemble will act as ensembles-in-residence for the evening, performing music by an array of young and established Irish composers. In addition, there will be solos and live electronic sets by guest performers and composers. CMC will also present live works and video screenings of collaborative image and sound works drawn from a call for submissions for the Culture Night event.

The biggest effort extended over three floors and used more than 3,000 Post-it notes to create a design so complex it had to be worked out on a computer!

Come and take up the challenge using your imagination and your skills by creating something bigger, wackier and more adventurous….. Open to all age groups and admission is free.

Career Zoo

10:00 – 18:00, Sat 22 Sep

Convention Centre, Spencer Dock, North Wall Quay Dublin 1

Career Zoo is moving to the Convention Centre after the previous event in the Round Room was soo full that people had to queue outside for quite some time. The employers inside (most of the big and attractive ones were represented) struggled keeping up with all the demand and heaps and heaps of CVs were handed over.

This time all is promised to be bigger and better. Some of the big names are Aldi, Allianz, Amazon, EA, EMC, Ericsson, Fidelity, Fineos, Microsoft, Twitter. And in addition to the employee seeking companies and the student seeking 4th level educational institutes, there are 14 talks/Career Workshops.

But I seem to remember that last time Paypal, Accenture and Ernst & Young might have been represented as well, they are missing this time. Last time 60 exhibitors were at the Career Zoo, this time the number is 77, but from two days it has been reduced to one day only.

Admission is free and if you pre-register on the website, you entrance will go faster, but you can also register at the event.

Festival of Urban Art

10:00 – 18:00, Sat 22 Sep

11:00 – 12:00, Sat 22 Sep

Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

In Town without my Car Day

11:30 – 17:00, Sat 22 Sep

Dame Court, Dublin 2

The disappointing programme in Dublin for this important day in the European Mobility Week is “a range of activities based around family fun. Picnics and alfresco dining with games and entertainment will make this a day not to be missed. Face painting , balloon making, stilt walking and a historical talk with Pat Liddy, at 3pm, on Dame Court are just a few of the attractions awaiting you in Dublin on Saturday. This event takes place at Dame Court and Fade Street which will be pedestrianised on the day for the event.”

Not to be missed?? Yeah sure! We are not impressed, dear Dublin City Council!

P.S. After searching through pages after pages after pages, I did finally find one further piece of information: There will be an outdoor stage in Dame Court and on Saturday the lineup will be
18:00-20:00 NC Lawler
20:00-22:00 MOO!
22:00-24:00 The Cravings

Erdinger Oktoberfest

12:00 – 00:30, Sat 22 Sep

Festival of Urban Art

10:00 – 18:00, Sun 23 Sep

Erdinger Oktoberfest

12:00 – 20:00, Sun 23 Sep

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Bilingualism and Cultural Identity (in Italian)

17:00, Mon 24 Sep

Italian Institute of Culture, 11 Fitzwilliam Square East, Dublin 2

“To raise a bilingual child entails a great effort that stretches over a number of years. How does a child acquire language? Does bilingualism differ if we learn a second language from birth or from later on? Which is the best way to transmit two languages without creating imbalances? What are the effects of bilingualism on children’s intellectual development? How to help an adolescent to take advantage of double linguistic and cultural references? What does it mean to shape one’s identity from two languages and two cultures? Finally, how can the parents keep the skills of the minority language alive for their children? These are the questions and the themes we will consider and which we will attempt to answer during these two meetings.”

Dr. Sergio Spinelli, Psychologist and Jungian Psychotherapist, will talk about this on 17 and 24 Sept. Admission is free.

This is an unusual “event” for all under 18 year olds. RTÉ is inviting the young people of Ireland to join in the creation of “Life’s Like This”, a unique and extraordinary documentary experiment. They want to include as many children as possible and are asking all children or their families or friends to record roughly two minutes of something they did, saw or thought on the day. It could be anything, important or not so much. Just what life is like.
“Life’s Like This” is a platform for the 1.2 million under-18s to express who they are across the children’s television schedule – a timely insight into Irish children as the country prepares to vote in the first ever referendum on the rights of children.
Contributions should be filmed on Tues 25 Sept and they can be filmed on a smart-phone, an i-phone, a video camera, anything. Anyone who owns a recording device can be part of Life’s Like This. Clips can then be simply uploaded on the RTÉ Young Peoples dedicated website. An easy to follow step by step guide on the RTE young peoples website at www.rte.ie/trte/lifeslikethis/ will explain how to upload the video clip and what is important to know about how to take part.

Living in Emergency – Film Screening

19:00, Tue 25 Sep

Lighthouse Cinema, Market Square, Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7

This award-winning documentary was filmed in the war-zones of Liberia and Congo, following four MSF (Médicins Sans Frontières) volunteers as they struggle to provide emergency medical care under extreme conditions. With different levels of experience, each volunteer must find their own way to face the challenges, the tough choices, and the limits of their idealism. ‘Living in Emergency’ is a window into the seldom-portrayed and less than glamorous side of humanitarian aid work. It explores a world that is challenging, complex, and fraught with dilemmas – the struggles, both internal and external, that aid workers face when working in war zones and other difficult contexts.

Communications Opportunities in Ireland – Talks

10:00, Wed 26 Sep

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

“Filling the Whitespace” is a series of talks, presentations and demonstrations. Radio spectrum will become available when the Irish analogue TV signals are switched off at the end of October 2012. The unused White Spaces will be up for grabs. But, who will use this spectrum? And what for? – Some of these questions have already been addressed by both industry and regulators in the USA and the UK where the digital TV switchover has already advanced. Suggested uses of this spectrum range from new WiFi-like devices for increased broadband connectivity, to machine-to-machine (M2M) applications, to new mobile network operator deployments.” The Filling the White Spaces workshop will inform an Irish audience about these opportunities by sharing the experiences of companies that have already conducted trials in the UK and USA. A selection of companies will speak at the workshop.

Admission to this event is free, but registration is required. Find all details on the website below.

Arthur’s Day

18:00, Thu 27 Sep

Dublin (various locations)

Since its inception three years (or so) ago I complained that if Guinness really wanted to involve the masses and make this advertisement campaign accessible to everyone, they should stop selling tickets for the gigs and make the gigs free. I do NOT think that they listened to me, BUT that’s exactly what they are doing this year. “Arthur’s Day” is for the first time free and has widened its scope significantly. More than 500 events will take place throughout Ireland with more than 200 taking place in Dublin. And on top of that there will be a You Tube channel this year where you can follow some of the main events online ( www.youtube.com/user/GuinnessEurope). Great idea!

Some people think that “Arthur’s Day” is the celebration of Arthur Guinness’ birthday, but that is not the case (nobody seems to know when exactly he was born!). It is purely a Guinness driven PR stunt, however it is definitely working for them as it is a very popular event. And I have to say that 500 free music events throughout Ireland is an achievement that deserves praise. Bands and audience benefit equally.

The Guinness website has a whole section dedicated to this day and there is a map that contains all events. I found it a little difficult to navigate and would have appreciated a list of all the events sorted by County. But I guess the intention is to get you to go to your local pub instead of travelling to your prefered music event.

In previous years a big emphasis was put on drinking Guinness at 17:59 (In 1759 the Guinness Brewery in Dublin was founded). This emphasis seems to have removeda nd again I think it makes sense! It was a silly idea and the time was much tooo early to be congruent with responsible drinking.

So my cynicism from previous years is gone and all behind the idea! :-) I still don’t like the taste of Guinness, but, hey, don’t hold that against me! ;-)

Arthur’s Day: Ryan Sheridan

18:00, Thu 27 Sep

Copan, 304 Rathmines Road Lower, Rathmines, Dublin 6

Copán in Rathmines certainly got a top act for their Arthur’s Day gig. Ryan Sheridan is a brilliant and hugely successful musician with a very unique style of guitar playing. I have to admit that I prefer his older arrangements, the newer songs and arrangements have lost a good bit of his unique and orignal style, but he is nevertheless definitely worth going to Copan. Doors is at 17:00 and the show starts at 18:00. A DJ will entertain afterwards. Admission is free and tickets are not required.

Mark Miodownik: Strange Materials

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The next event in the SFI Speaker Series is entitled “Strange Materials” with Mark Miodownik. Admission is free, but pre-booking is essential.

On our Earth there are living things which we call life, and there are non-living things which we call rocks, tools, buildings and so on. As a result of our greater understanding of matter, this distinction is now becoming blurred and a new materials age is about to start.
Mark Miodownik, from the Institute of Making, believes bionic people with synthetic organs, bones and even brains will be the norm. Just as we become more synthetic, so our man-made environment is changing to become more lifelike: living buildings, and objects that heal-themselves are on the horizon.

After 22:00 a very odd wristband system is in place. You have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 and you get a EUR 5 voucher for “a substantial meal” with it. (EUR 1 goes to a charity). Note: Only cash, no credit or Laser cards will be accepted.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Zoo in Temple Bar? Airport in Dundrum? Filling Station IN Dublin Business School?

These are just three examples of the shambles that Apple made with Apple maps that comes with the new iPhone operating system iOS6. You might have heard on Thursday that the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter was afraid that planes would land at a farm in his constituency ( www.independent.ie/national-news/justice-minister-shatter-surprised-about-apple-airport-in-the-middle-of-dundrum-3235329.html ). He totally overreacted, but highlighted a big screw up. The new Apple Maps show an airport symbol at “Airfield” in Dundrum. Airfield is a farm (under renovation) in Dundrum. He wants to contact Apple because “the designation is not only wrong but is dangerously misleading in that it could result in a pilot, unfamiliar with the area, in an emergency situation and without other available information, attempting a landing.” If you ever find out that the pilot ion the plane you are in uses his iPhone to navigate, FIND THAT PARACHUTE! :-) Shatter also suggested they should use another image and he even made some suggestions: “There are a variety of possible alternative images that could be utilised such a cow, a goat, a sheep, a flower or any indeed other type of plant as Airfield operates a nursery.” Apple will be grateful for his good advice. :-P

But seriously, Apple screwed up a LOT more! Dublin Zoo was moved to Temple Bar, a filling station is suddenly where the Dublin Business School is in Aungier Street and there is an area near Henry Street called “Henry Street Core”. :-O You can see all that here twitter.com/fit_gurl/status/248727070501392384/photo/1 and you bet there is a lot more wrong! The BBC reports ( www.bbc.com/news/technology-19659736 ) that whole towns are missing or in the wrong place. A search for Manchester United Football club brings you to a football club for children and more. Apple screwed up BIG time! For a good laugh, here are a few more nuggets: www.thejournal.ie/apple-maps-dublin-mistakes-602646-Sep2012/

But the big competitor in that area, Google, had their share of problems too. Until they replaced TeleAtlas, their previous map provider, with their own maps, they claimed that St. Stephen’s Green was in Ranelagh. Luckily all that is sorted now. However an annoying (for us foreigners) new detail has been added: ALL streets now have an Irish and an English name. And at certain resolutions you will ONLY see the Irish name. So, Sráid an Iústásaigh anyone, or maybe Sráid Liam Theas?

Have you made your plan for Culture Night? I hope so! If not, then quickly check the Friday section of this e-zine. There are only a small number of events listed but they give you at least something to do! Or alternatively, just get to Temple Bar and follow the people. A bit of a “pot luck” strategy, but because nearly all events at Culture Night are worth a visit, your risk is relatively small.

Have an event-full time,

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
