Hi all!

I hope you had a great Culture Night and a nice weekend. I was in Rimini (Italy) for a 4-day training course called “Unleash the Power Within” with Anthony Robbins. Great stuff and a lot of fun. One of the highlights of the seminar is the firewalk, where you walk in your bare feet across 650 degree hot coal! But there is lots more and I entirely enjoyed it. Apart from the interesting seminar there was some other interesting aspect: 5000 people were at that seminar in one BIG hall of the Rimini Fiera and there was a moment when I realised that all of us of the Dublin Event Guide Community could have filled this massive hall TWICE!! :-)

[ad]

Last night I had the opportunity to go to an opening night performance of the Dublin Theatre Festival. The performance was called “Donka. A letter to Chekhov” and all I can say is WOW! Funny, breathtaking and entertaining…all in right measures. There are only four performances of this play (30 Sept, 01 Oct and 02 Oct) and there are still tickets available for the matinee (afternoon) shows on Sat and Sun (Friday is sold out). I strongly recommend to go despite the fact that it is not free. This play is definitely worth it! For more information and to buy tickets go to dublintheatrefestival.com/programme/display.asp?Eventid=587&m= If you can’t go, you can at least find some impressive pictures etc here donkashow.com/donka.html

Last week I received a few positive comments because the Dublin Event Guide was already in your Inbox on Thursday morning. I know that it would be better to send it already on Thursday, but due to my day job, it is not easy to achieve on a regular basis. I am sure you agree, that it would already be a good achievement to get it out to you earlier on a Friday. So let’s start with small positive steps. BUT, I will start with that goal NEXT week! ;-) Today, instead, you will get this Event Guide quite late again because I dared to go out to the Opening of the Theatre Festival. :-o

Like every week, I am asking you to spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide, your friends will thank you for it! :-) Print a few of these A4 pages out and hang them up at strategically good palaces? At work, or in your local community or gym or in the neighbourhood supermarket! www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf And keep telling your friends, colleagues, families about the Dublin Event Guide and help them to subscribe: The website is at www.dublineventguide.com where your friends can subscribe to the weekly newsletter in the sign-up form on the right. On the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide they only have to click on JOIN EMAIL LIST and while they are there, they should click on LIKE. These are the preferred methods, but if they are not convenient, then your friends can sign up as well by sending an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject SUBSCRIBE DEG.

We now more than 6600 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and it would be really great if we could be as big on Facebook as we are on this distribution list. Click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is something I added to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. This week I will only remind you of a quote that says “In life we don’t get what we want, we get what we expect!” Are you expecting the best possible? Or are you expecting failure, disaster and mediocrity?

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

This week Caoimhe L, Adrian Ph and Sandi C supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Without the donations from the supporters you would not get a Dublin Event Guide. If you have never helped with a contribution, then the other supporters should ask you “Why not? What is holding you back? Why are you not doing your part?”

To join the list of the much appreciated and esteemed supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost.

To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – I am giving 25 hours every week for no pay, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. I need you to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? You can give much more than EUR 12 or you can give less, but EUR 12 is a big help for me and not too much for you. If you have a company that would like to sponsor the Event Guide talk to me!
www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here to start your purchase, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week there is no big event. So, I will do some catch up. I plan to go to the Botanic Gardens (finally) to see the Sculptures in Context Exhibition, then the National Museum in Collins Barracks is on the plan and on Sunday evening I will be again in Gardiner Street Church for the Gospel Mass of the Gardiner Street Gospel Chor. During the week I will not have any time this week to go to events, but I Hope you will find something that interests you.

I am already looking forward to the Open House event next weekend (see Friday), I discovered amazingly interesting buildings in the last two years and can’t wait to see more!

______Dublin News______________

NEW MAPS AND SIGNS IN DUBLIN
On 26 September the newest maps and signs that will support the earlier introduced new direction signs have been launched. Twenty double-sided map panels will provide pedestrians with a new navigational tool to get around the streets of Dublin. Locations for the signs are Grafton St, Merrion Square, Heuston and Connolly Stations, Temple Bar and three locations on O’Connell St. (Not sure how these 8 locations equate to 20 signs, maybe there is more than one in some of the streets.) The Wayfinding System will tell you where to find the nearest Luas or dublinbikes stop, how to get to a gallery, museum, train station or park. All 20 are individually designed and are back-lit to be visibile in darkness as well. 60 directional signposts were already installed in 2010, further 24 sign posts will be installed and the 20 map panels complete the new “Wayfinding System”. www.dublincity.ie/Press/PressReleases/PressReleasesSeptember2011/Pages/Pedestriansfindinganewwaytogetaroundcapital%E2%80%99sstreets.aspx

DUBLIN THEATRE FESTIVAL
The Fringe Festival has come to the end, so now it is time for the Dublin Theatre Festival. From 29 Sept – 16 October the Theatre Festival will run and the programme is full of events. Unfortunately there are no theatre performances available that are free and unlike in previous year there has not even been one of the performances a free performance for the masses. A couple of discussions and talks are free and you can find them here www.dublintheatrefestival.com/specialevents/ , but for theatre you will have to pay. www.dublintheatrefestival.com/

CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL
Throughout the whole October the Children’s Book Festival will take place in Ireland. Activities will be running in libraries, schools and arts centres. With everything from readings by popular authors, to writing and illustration workshops, plus storytelling, quizzes and competitions. This year’s programme includes a strong international flavour with authors Tony DiTerlizzi (The Spiderwick Chronicles), Justin Somper (Vampirates), Andy Briggs (The new Tarzan series) and William Hussey (The Witchfinder series), sharing their writing experiences at events nationwide. Irish authors Derek Landy (The Skullduggery Pleasant series), Sarah Webb (the Amy Green series), Judi Curtin (the Alice series) and Oisin McGann (The Wisdom of Dead Men) will be involved as well. The festival is organised by Children’s Books Ireland. All details can be found on www.childrensbooksireland.ie

RABBLE – MAGAZINE
A new (not for profit) magazine for Dublin was launched recently and the first issue is online and available for pick-up in a variety of locations in Dublin. The website explains: “rabble is a non-profit, newspaper from the city’s underground. It’s collectively and independently run by volunteers. Rabble aims to create a space for the passionate telling of truth, muck-raking journalism and well aimed pot-shots at illegitimate authority.” Have a look at rabble.ie

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

FRENCH LANGUAGE SCHOOL – CITY CENTRE
Recently Emilie Champenois told me about her new French Language Business School and because she needs a bit of help to get the word out, I am very happy to tell you all about her new business. She currently runs classes for Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced Students in Merrion Street Lower, Dublin 2. All teachers are native speakers and are experienced teaching French in Ireland. They will teach you the French language through games or visits of different Cultural Sires around Dublin in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. So it is not just book learning, but you EXPERIENCE real situations where you will be able to apply your language skills. There is also the possibility of private tuition and preparation for Junior/Leaving Certificates exams. Classes take place on Saturdays (1.5 hours) and are strictly limited to 8 people to maximize the students’ participation. The next starting date for the Beginners class is in early October and the rates seem to be extremely attractive. Give her a call to find out more!
Also on offer is a very unique way for Intermediate and Advanced Students to increase their skills: Lean and Socialise in French through the visits of Cultural and Heritage Sites in Dublin while speaking in French. The first class will be a Cocktail Party where all the students can get to know each other in a friendly environment. The next 3 classes will occur in different Cultural and Heritage sites of the city while discussing ideas in French and the last class will be a French Lunch Party.
If you are interested in learning French, contact Emilie by phone 086 30 40 950 or via emi2292001@yahoo.fr She doesn’t have a website yet, but is more than happy to help and advise over the phone or by e-mail and you can book that way as well.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY – LIBRARY EXHIBITION

The exhibition not only highlights the life of an extraordinary Dublin merchant, social reformer, historian and bibliophile, but displays the vast wealth and scope of material available to researchers of Irish and British history at the RIA.
The Library will hold a series of free lunch time lectures around the exhibition in Spring 2012. Dates and details will be available later in the year. Admission is free. www.ria.ie/Events/Events-Listing/Library-Exhibition-%281%29.aspx

INK SLINGERS CREATIVE WRITING HOUR – IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE

SINGLES NIGHT – CLARION HOTEL IFSC
Fri 30 Sept: 20:00-00:30 – Kudos Bar, The Clarion Hotel, IFSC, Dublin 1
Two friends of mine have identified that 1-2-1 is very time-consuming, especially because it is a hit-and-miss effort where the “chat” can be VERY awkward if you know already in the first 5 seconds that there is no chemistry whatsoever and all you want is any excuse to leave early. To help that, this singles night will give you a chance to meet all the girls/guys you’ve been chatting to via Facebook, Bebo, MySpace and Dating Sites and want to meet in person. You can then quickly establish who you’d like to date, who you’d like as a friend and who you never, ever want to see again. There is no speed dating and no formal programme to this evening, the idea is rather to meet in a normal bar environment but with the difference that you and everyone is there for one reason…to meet others.
So invite your friends to it to make sure that there is a good mix of people. Admision is free and the organisers will do their best to make sure no girls or guys are left on their own. www.facebook.com/notes/paul-hurley/dublin-singles-night-friday-september-30th-entry-is-free/10150379761775097

THOUGHTS FROM THE FESTIVAL – PANEL DISCUSSION
Sat 01 + 08 Oct: 13:00 – Project Arts Centre, Temple Bar + Goethe-Institut, Merrion Square. As part of The Radical Mind programme the Dublin Theatre Festival presents two panel discussions:

In the midst of the boom an Irish politician ignited debate by claiming that Ireland was economically and spiritually closer to Boston than Berlin. Ireland’s artists begged to differ. Some of the countless writers, actors and visual artists who flocked to Berlin in recent years to avail of its lower cost of living and thriving arts scene return to discuss why Berlin is so attractive and what Dublin can “learn” from Berlin.
Adrienne Goehler, former Senator (Minister) for Science, Research and Culture in the State of Berlin, now publisher and curator based in Berlin, will participate in the discussion. Other participants: Rachel West, theatre director, Berlin/Dublin
Denis Staunton, Irish Times, Foreign Editor, former Germany correspondent
+ “Radical Thoughts” will take place on 08 Oct at 13:00 in the Goethe-Institut, 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. Leading German and Irish commentators and artists discuss the constant presence of radical thought and experimentation at the centre of German culture and society. They will discuss the role of intellectuals in this debate on society values and the significance of the arts and artists for society.
Joachim Lux, artistic director of the Thalia Theater Hamburg/Germany, will participate in the discussion.

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

DAVID NORRIS – AGAIN!?
I promise that I will not bore you every week with odd David Norris stories, but I was in my car yesterday when I heard an interview on Newstalk with David Norris and I can’t keep that from you. In my opinion Norris is totally unsuitable as a president and this has nothing to do with his private life or his preferences. My opinion is based on the fact that Norris is completely self-centred in all aspects and I just don’t think his ego-centricity is appropriate for the Irish President.
George Hook on Newstalk did a good interview with Norris and despite Norris’ best attempts to waffle and dodge his way out of every interesting argument, George Hook did (most of the time) not get side-tracked. If you have a bit of time and if you are interested in the Presidential Election, listen to this interview. www.newstalk.ie/2011/featured-5-slideshow-homepage/george-hook-interviews-david-norris/ I don’t think Norris’ letter in defence of his ex-boyfriend is the biggest problem, but I am amazed about his dodging and continued dishonesty about it. And another thing that regularly amazes me is how he dares to answer a question with answers that have NOTHING to do with the question. George Hook asked (at 20min 05 sec) what he thought about Oisin Quinn (Labour) saying in the council meeting that Norris’ campaign is devoid of vision or ideas. And what did Norris answer? “Can I tell you something, and I was there. Every single person, and some of them spoke quite strongly against me, every single person applauded me.” Well, in THAT case we better quickly vote for him. :-O Very odd interview! If I had been a Norris fan before, I would have gone off him after this interview.

ANOTHER FUTURE PRESIDENT: MARY DAVIS – NOT SO REAL
And there is another interesting story about another possible future president. It is relatively harmless, but it makes you wonder why we have to fake pictures. If it was a product, we would call it false advertisement, because it is a human being, it is called “subtle enhancing”, but if you compare the pictures, they are WORLDS apart. Odd that Mary Davis thinks this is necessary to win the election. www.broadsheet.ie/2011/09/30/subtle-enhancing/
