Hi all!

I had a busy and good week and I it was the same for you. When you receive this newsletter it is time to look forward to the weekend and what a busy and varied weekend this will be. ;-) Quite a number of events are taking place this weekend and for me the most important will certainly be the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire. It is one of the best, if not THE best festival of the year. Sure there are other festivals and I am not ignoring the Electric Picnic, Oxegen and Castle Palooza, but they are by far not as family friendly and all-age-group-friendly as the Festival of World Cultures AND they are not free. But, hey, if Dun Laoghaire is too far for you, then you will find lots more to do.

Oh, I need your help again! No, I am not asking for money again. :-) Money is always welcome, but something happened last week that had not happened for a long time and you can help with it. Normally at least 30 – 50 people join our Dublin Event Guide Community every week, but last week it was the first time less than that. :-O So, I need you! Keep telling your friends and colleagues about the Event Guide! Win brownie points with them by introducing them to the weekly guide of all free events in Dublin. They can simply sign up by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. And if you want to give them something OR if you work in a company, study in a University, are near a shop with a blackboard or have any other opportunity to spread the word, maybe these flyers/tear-off-posters help:
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
Thanks for all your help! I will definitely pay you back. Not with money, but with lots of information about free events. ;-)

————-
Thanks to the wonderful people Niamh K., Jennie R., Semin S., Gavin H. and David G. who helped me this week with their donations. I couldn’t do it without you!

If you can help – and help is much appreciated – you can donate through PayPal or via a secure credit card transaction on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.

This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E, Cliodhna D, Brian L, Padraig S, Kathie S, Orla niF, Jef B, Susanna N, Kate C, Nicola J, Claus Sch, Gordon S, Jeanne M, Fiona O’C, Marta M, Angela C, Isabelle F, Saundra S, Meisoon N, Ruth F, Valerie McN, Estelle O, Aoife M, Mairin M, Fionán O’L, Maeve L, Blaithin O’D, Ciara D, Mike G, Andrej G, Deirdre R, Vanessa O’L, Chris McK, Frank B, Dolores P, Cornelia K, Cathy A, Orla C, Kevin McC, Steph G, Wanda J, Siv M-J, Niamh niS, Gwen H, Jasmin T, Ian O, Eva C, Will P, Gráinne P, Caroline R, Elizabeth F, Suzanne B, Adele G, Jack C, Keeva H, Mairead MacM, Niamh G, Siobhan C, Jackie B, Penny O’D, Kathryn K, Aidan G, Ciara G, Deirdre L, Stephen D, Mary Q, Donald P, Aidan C, Julia Sch, Isak R-B, Sharon O’S, Brajan V, Nancy O’D, Zelie McG, Niamh K, Jennie R, Semin S, Gavin H, David G and www.stickyfingerstravel.com (The travel guide for parents travelling with their children.), www.flamencoindalo.com (A group that supports and promotes the art of Flamenco in Ireland.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, located at 6 Merrion Square, which supports contemporary Irish artists.) and www.a1computers.ie in Dun Laoghaire/Cabinteely (…who repair computers, printers and sort out Internet problems fast and who sell computers, laptops and low priced printer cartridges). The main sponsor is www.kravmagaireland.com, the self-defence training centre for everyone, which provides regular 12-week or 2-day self-defence training courses for beginners.

Currently more than 4700 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful and nice people that have helped financially to get this newsletter to you every week are listed in the next section. To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed too! All I am asking for is 1 single Euro per month (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). For a whole year that is less than 3 pints or less than 2 gin+tonic or similar. I know times are tough for many and if 12 Euro per year is too much and you ALREADY have given up going to the pub, paying for taxis etc then please accept this newsletter as a gift to you but please pay it forward (i.e. do something good for someone else – it doesn’t have to cost money)! However, if you can spare two drinks per year to help with the cost for this weekly newsletter that helps you save so much more than EUR 12, then please help with your contribution.
You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

What a busy weekend! Festival of World Culture, Heritage Week and sooo much more! It is very difficult to give you advise on what to do this week and I would love to divide myself into lots of pieces and do a bit of everything. But since that is not possible, I unfortunately will have to give the Heritage Week a miss and instead will go on Sat or Sun in the morning to the People’s Photography Exhibition at St. Stephen’s Green and will then spend the rest of Sat AND of Sun in Dun Laoghaire. There are sooo many concerts, workshops, demonstrations, markets etc that I will just stay in Dun Laoghaire. Hopefully the weather will hold out. I would love to go to the Which Course Expo, but I will probably not manage.
If you are in Dublin, have a look at the Comedy event in Shebeen Chic on Sunday evening!
On Monday I recommend the Career Boot Camp in the National College of Ireland for all people that are looking for a job.
On Tuesday both the “Green Drinks” and the Plan Ireland event sound very interesting. I will be from Wednesday to Friday at the Ultimate Marketing Seminar in the D4 Hotels (former Jury’s Inn) and am looking forward to it. (www.ultimatemarketingseminar.eu/?af=CLA1035324). So I will definitely not be bored this week! ;-)
If you want to follow (loosely) what I do, you can do so on Twitter: www.twitter.com/JoergSt

FITT BOOTCAMP MEMBERSHIP
A few weeks ago I wrote about Cathy Albanese’s search for an indoor venue for her FITT Bootcamp for the winter and asked all of you if you could help Cathy. Cathy didn’t just get what she was looking for, but even got more! (Interesting what you can achieve if 4700 people conspire together for a common goal.). Cathy now has not one, but two venues and as a Thank You to all of you, she is offering some great prices for a competition. There will be two lucky winners and the winners will have to be female because the FITT Bootcamp is only for women, but if you are male you certainly are allowed to enter the competition if you want to surprise a woman in your life in case you win. ;-)
One winning reader will get a free membership (3 months valued at EUR 190) for the IT Blanchardstown indoor bootcamp classes (Monday & Wednesday @ 18:00) and another reader will get a free membership (3 months valued at EUR 190) for the Corduff Sports Centre Classes (Monday & Thursday @ 20:00).
Details for the FITT Bootcamp (for ladies only) can be found at www.fittpt.com. And to win one of the prices you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with FITT in the subject line and in the body of the mail you have to tell me what “FITT” stands for. In addition I need your name and your mobile phone number in the body of the mail and finally, please tell me if you have a preference for IT Blanchardstown or for Corduff or if either of the two is ok with you. The mail has to be with my by 15:00 on Mon 07 Sept. www.fittpt.com

NEW HORIZON EXPEDITIONS – BOOK COMPETITION

LATIN QUARTER – EYP ACADEMY – TICKET COMPETITION
The European Young Professionals (EYP) networking group had made two pairs of tickets available for last nights “EYP -The Academy” event called “Latin Quarter” with Latin dance, food and drink at the Button Factory in Temple Bar and the lucky winners were Michelle Clarke + Shane Donelly.
www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=133748396907

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

LOOKING FOR A JOB?
If you are looking for a job, make sure you check out the Monday section in this newsletter to find out more about a great event for all unemployed/jobless/job seekers from Mon 31 Aug- Sat 05 Sept. www.ncirl.ie/dynamic/File/events/Bootcamp%20Brochure_Final_Sml.pdf

NO TO NAMA
The opposition to NAMA is growing. Forty-six academic economists and lecturers in business think the Government has got it wrong on the National Asset Management Agency and have expressed their opinion in the Irish Times www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2009/0826/1224253267074.html and on facebook a “No to NAMA” group was formed and more than 7000 people have joined. The group is party independent and if you want to find out more you can read it here: www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=233861925262 On 12 Sept a Protest March is planned against “NAMA” and you can find out the details on the Facebook group site.

PLAYHOUSE – FLASHING LIBERTY HALL
Were you in town on Wednesday? Did you see Liberty Hall flashing and “shining”? If you did, you probably were very surprised. If you didn’t, you will hear and see a lot more about it: As part of the Dublin Theatre Festival, Liberty Hall will be turned into a HUGE low-resolution screen for YOUR animations. The launch was on Wednesday and that’s why the lights were turned on already, but all will go live on 24 Sept. Until then you can create and submit your own animations. Read all details here: www.daft.ie/playhouse/

BOOK CLUB – NORTHSIDE
Denise R told me about a book club she is organising with some friends on Dublin’s Northside. They are just re-starting after a summer break and will meet next time on the first Wednesday in September (02 Sept) in the Goose pub off Gracepark Road at 20:00. It is an informal gathering of people who love to read and are willing to maybe read books they wouldn’t normally consider and you are more than welcome to join. The areas covered are Glasnevin, Whitehall, Artane & Drumcondra and for details you can contact Brian on 087 2363282.

POVERTY REQUIEM – CALLING ALL SINGERS TO TAKE PART
Do you want to take part in a massive choral performance for UN World Poverty Day? Cathy McEvoy, the Director of the Ballymun Gospel Choir and leader of The Gospel Project needs you! Cathy is, supported by Sli Eile, the Jesuit Centre for Young Adults, looking for all singers (experienced or otherwise – ability to read music is not essential) who can attend some rehearsals and who will join the Poverty Requiem on 17 Oct 2009.
Rehearsals will be on Sun 04 Oct (12:30-15:30) for Part 1, Thur 08 Oct (19:30-21:30) for Part 2, Sat 10 Oct (14:00-17:00) for Part 3 and Thur 15 Oct (19:30-21:30) for Part 4. (Location for the rehearsals is still to be determined.) If you can only attend some rehearsals but not all, you are still welcome to participate and during the performance you will just sing the parts that you were able to rehearse. If possible please download score and/or lyrics in advance from www.associatief.nl/poverty-requiem, there will only be limited copies available at rehearsals. The final rehearsal and the performance will be on Sat 17 Oct in St. Ann’s Church, Dawson Street.
The Poverty Requiem is composed by Dutch composer Peter Maissan in the style of worldmusic. It is written for a choir of an unlimited number of singers (men, women, children), two solo singers, and a number of percussionists and dancers. Its intention is to let people raise their voice against poverty in the world. You can listen to the parts on www.associatief.nl/poverty-requiem (Four of the five parts will be performed in Dublin.)
For further info and to register your interest to participate contact Cathy McEvoy (085-1127306 or e-mail: ballymungospel@sli-eile.com). Please contact Cathy before the 11 Sept, if you want to take part!

THE POWER OF TWITTER – LANCE ARMSTRONG
You probably have heard that Lance Armstrong was in Ireland. First for the cycling race “Tour of Ireland” and then for a conference about cancer and while here, he invited people to cycle with him. On Tuesday morning at 10:00 he sent a message from his Twitter account and at 17:30 approx. 1200 people met him in Phoenix Park. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0825/breaking49.htm
I have some doubts about the usefulness of Twitter in a business context, but without a doubt it is a powerful media alternative and if you haven’t looked at it yet, you should find out about it. You do absolutely not need a training course, just sign up on www.twitter.com and try it out. It is completely free, really simple to use and to learn the handful of “rules”. I am using it a bit more lately and am posting some event notices using Twitter. To follow me go to www.twitter.com/JoergSt and to learn the ropes check out help.twitter.com/forums/10711/entries/13920

INTERNET CENSORSHIP – RESPECT FOR UPC/CHORUS/NTL
The record industry is trying to censor more and interfere with your right to have access to information (I am not defending copyright infringement, but I will never accept censorship.) Luckily UPC (or NTL/Chorus) are no push-overs. Praise to UPC!
www.yourtechstuff.com/techwire/2009/08/pirate-bay-latest-big-music-labels-to-issue-injunction-against-chorus-ntl.html

CAR BOOT SALE FOR CROSSCARE – PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT
On Sat 12 Sept (11:00-15:00) there will be a Car Boot Sale in aid of Crosscare (www.crosscare.ie) in the Mater Dei Institute Car Park, Clonliffe Road, Drumcondra, Dublin 3. The organisers Monica (8371892) or Olivia (8360011) are looking for sellers (gates open from 09:00) and you should contact them if you are interested: Option 1: Free entry and donate your takings or Option 2: Pay EUR 25 and pocket your takings. Admission for buyers will be free and there will be Face Painting on the day and a Refreshment Stall.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4600+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

PEOPLE’S PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 2009 – ST. STEPHEN’S GREEN
I have been at this last year and it is definitely worth a visit: The 2009 People’s Photography exhibition will take place on Sat 29 + Sun 30 Aug from 10:00-18:00. Over 200 photographers will show their work/art/hobby on the railings (i.e. the fence) of St. Stephen’s Green. The photographers come from many different countries and last year I was a little surprised that a very large proportion was Polish. If you are interested, photographers are happy to sell their work directly to you and you might go home with a wonderful piece of art for your living room. :-) The event is run on a non-profit making basis and after expenses are paid, donations are made to two charities (Simon Community and the National Council for the Blind). For more information contact Tadhg Nathan 087 979 0047 or Karen Anderton 087 2665848. You can join the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/pages/Dublin/Peoples-Photography/129169361773 or check their website www.peoples-photography.com

FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURE – DUN LAOGHAIRE
I know, I keep going on about this festival, but if you have been there you know why and if you have never been there, then you have to try it out and you will understand. :-) The Festival of World Cultures is the best and most interesting festival of the year and the great thing is that it is totally family-friendly, suitable for all ages AND it is free. Over two days there are an incredible amount of free concerts, dance performances and workshops. There will be lots of delicious food and other boots that sell goods on a street market. It is virtually impossible to describe the whole festival here and you should definitely have a look at the website and then just go. ;-) I will be there on Saturday and Sunday and will probably spend most of the time at the main stage in Newtown Smith Green (between the Dun Laoghaire Pier and the 40 Foot). If you want to meet me during the two days, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with FOWC as the subject. Let me know what your mobile phone number is and I will send mine back or just ring me on Sat or Sun on 087 2931571. festivalofworldcultures.com/ You can download the full festival brochure here www.festivalofworldcultures.com/wp-content/uploads/FoWC_Brochure_2009.pdf or alternatively browse through the more than 70 events here www.festivalofworldcultures.com/programme2009?f=free

FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURES – THE OFFICIAL LINE
The official Festival PR says “The Festival of World Cultures brings a world of arts music and global culture to Ireland’s doorstep. “An exhilarating mix of music, dance, performance art and magic…a family-friendly Glastonbury” says the Irish Times. French singer Jane Birkin, Malian superstar Oumou Sangare and the mystical Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan are among the international world musicians headlining this year’s Festival of World Cultures – an annual Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council event. Along with dozens of other artists from around the world, these global performers will transform Dún Laoghaire into an outdoor arena over the last weekend in August, bringing a cosmos of creativity to Ireland’s doorstep. Now in its ninth year, the Festival attracts over 250,000 people making it Ireland’s largest intercultural celebration. With a diverse world music line-up, food fairs, art exhibitions, workshops and cultural demonstrations as well as a Festival newspaper and nightly Festival Club where Irish artists jam with world musicians, this family-friendly celebration is a round-trip, non-stop ticket to a world of culture. And, with over 90% of the events free of charge, the Festival is the top value-for-money event on the summer calendar, appealing to all the senses as well as the wallet. . festivalofworldcultures.com/

NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK
The National Heritage Week is continuing until Sunday and I had planned to list a number of other interesting events this week. Nearly all events are free and if this weekend the Festival of World Cultures didn’t take place I would go to many Heritage Week events, but I have to choose and unfortunately will have to give the Heritage Week a miss.
The programmes continue until 30 Aug and the full programme is on www.heritageweek.ie with the Dublin programme here www.heritageweek.ie/en/HomeSearchResults.aspx?loc=Dublin.
But I will pick a few that I think a worth a visit:

Robert O’Shea, Secretary of the Irish Waste Management Association (IWMA) will shed some light on the issue. www.greendrinks.org. Albert White from www.LightPollution2009.eu alerted me to a lecture that is taking place in September but for which you need to book one of only approx. 120 tickets, so you better decide soon and book early. The lecture is part of the 9th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky and is entitled “What is Light?” Lecturer is Leo Enright. Leo Enright, a broadcaster on Space Exploration and Science, explores the history of Ireland’s sometimes tenuous connection with luminosity
– while naming and shaming some modern big wicks. He will focus on the importance of continuing public access to dark skies, especially during the present ‘Golden Age’ of astronomy, whilst noting that historically Ireland has sometimes been defined by the absence of light – why else would the Romans have called it Hibernia?
The event will take place on Wed 16 September 2009 at 19:00 in the Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2. Admission is free but places are limited. For booking please visit shop.ria.ie/shop/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=22&cat=Event%2BRegistration

DRINKS PROMOTIONS – YES OR NO?
It is always amazing to observe how the organisation that is allegedly trying to get us all to “drink sensibly” operates. If you know or realise that this organisation, called MEAS (Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society) has been set up and is funded by the drinks industry (to protect the industry against the set-up of a state body which would be a lot less sympathetic) it makes more sense, but is still astonishing. During the week MEAS decided on two complaints that they had received. In one case a pub offered pints from 15:00-19:00 for the not very reduced price of EUR 4. This is the period where there was hardly any business in the pub and they wanted to attract a few more people (mainly pensioners). Because the price reduction is time limited, MEAS decided that it was encouraging irresponsible or immoderate consumption, such as binge-drinking, drunkenness or drink-driving. Fair enough, you might think: Happy Hour reductions are not allowed so MEAS did the right thing. I agree!
But then who can explain this: A night club in Stillorgan ran a promotion that offered all drinks on every Saturday during a whole month for just EUR 2. In my naivety I would think that this much more “encouraged irresponsible or immoderate consumption, such as binge-drinking, drunkenness or drink-driving”. Alcohol throughout the whole day, for a really low price? Yep, definitely a problem. But what does MEAS say? They decided: EUR 2 for the whole day is NOT a problem, but EUR 4 for 3 hours IS a problem. This is not just odd, it is totally irresponsible and condemnable! Somebody said to me MEAS are muppets and I can see the point in this statement.
Interestingly the MEAS decision makes a lot of sense: The nightclub in Stillorgan needs to get people to survive, the pub on Baggot Street just wanted a handful more people. So let’s “sacrifice” our friend who can easily live with the punishment. We will be seen to do a good service and then let’s make sure that our other friend in Stillorgan can continue to encourage people to consume alcohol irresponsibly to ensure his survival. Shocking stuff, but it does make sense when you keep in mind that the alcohol industry and the pub owners run MEAS.

—————–
If you are bored this week, then there is no helping you. ;-) It is probably the busiest weekend of the year, so make the most of it. Weather? Hey, we are in Dublin! So, yes, it will rain. But with umbrellas and rain gear for the – hopefully temporary – showers you will be well prepared and can still enjoy all the cool events this weekend.

Have a great weekend,

–Joerg

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
