Dublin Event Guide 725: What’s in a name? – Dublin Festival of History, Dandelion Market, National Botanic Gardens Tours

Dublin Event Guide (for free events)

What’s in a name?

Dublin Festival of History, Dandelion Market, National Botanic Gardens Tours

Hi all!

With so many events last week and lots of press releases that all announce some type of events, I totally forgot to ask you what you think of the rebranding of the Olympia Theatre. The Olympia is owned by MCD and MCD signed an 8-year contract with 3Ireland to rename the theatre to “3Olympia Theatre”. What do you think about that? Is that a good name? Or a silly name? Will you call the Olympia Theatre by its new name of will you stick to the old name?

What do you think in general about the commercialisation of names? Lansdowne Road Stadium Or Aviva Stadium? Grand Canal Theatre or Bord Gais Theatre? Point Theatre or 3Arena? What will be next? Will Croke Park be Vodafone Park soon? Or maybe Axa Park?

In 2018, Three Ireland signed a 55mio contract with Live Nation (who also own MCD) to keep the “3Arena” name for the Point Theatre for the next 10 years. 55mio!!?? And the 5 year extension to the original 10 year contract for naming Lansdowne Road Stadium “Aviva Stadium” did allegedly cost more than 40mio.

Do you know anybody who wants to put their name on a popular event guide for a lot of money??? I might be able to help! :-)))))

Until a big sponsor will slap their name on the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, your help will continue to be required.

Donations in September:

EUR 372

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter on the left shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be extracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week the wonderful people that donated were Anne, Thomas, Claudiu, Luana and Paul. THANK YOU! Your donation has arrived and you are appreciated!!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses. More details will be available soon.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 3. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ Festivals this week
The totally free Dublin Festival of History continues:
++ Dublin Festival of History – Online and In-person events (10 Sep- 10 Oct) dublinfestivalofhistory.ie/events/
The Theatre Festival and the GAZE LGBTQ+ Film Festival also take place but do not seem to have any free events (or they hide them so well that I couldn’t find them.)
+ GAZE International LGBTQ+ Film Festival 29 Sept-03 Oct www.gaze.ie/
+ Dublin Theatre Festival 30 Sept-17 Oct dublintheatrefestival.ie/programme/programme-2021

+++ Open House Dublin 2021
Open House is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and it will return on 15-17 October. In normal times, over the weekend there are lots of interesting buildings open in Dublin where architects give a guided tour and explain what the original thinking was when the building was created.
I got a completely new perspective of Liberty Hall and Busaras after being on an Open House Tour. Other interesting buildings that I saw over the years: Old Terminal at Dublin airport, Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Enterprise, Irish Lights Headquarters in Dun Laoghaire, Conference Centre Dublin, Four Courts, Criminal Courts of Justice and many more.
This year I expect a LOT more pre-booking will have to be done and because the tickets will be released on 28 Sept, I need to tell you about Open House this week already. Rush to your computer on Tuesday to book tickets! The full programme is at www.openhousedublin.com

+++ National Gallery tickets available here
The National Gallery is usually free anyway, but in current times you will have to book tickets to get access and you have to enter the building on the Merrion Street side. Tickets are available here: www.nationalgallery.ie/visit-us/book-your-ticket The National Gallery also is running events again and because the events have limited number of spaces, they can book out relatively fast, at least before I can write about the events, so check out the events 1-2 weeks in advance here www.nationalgallery.ie/whats-on and then book tickets for them.

+++ Visit Dublin Castle for free
Until the end of 2021, entry to Dublin Castle is free for all visitors. You will be able to visit the State Apartments on a self-guided tour. There are currently no guided tours and therefore the Medieval Undercroft and Chapel Royal are not accessible. Opening hours are Mon-Sun & Bank Holidays: 09:45-17:45 (last admission 17:15). Tickets can be booked at dublincastle.admit-one.eu/?p=calendar&ev=SELFGUIDE for free there will also a limited number of tickets available at the ticket desk.

+++ Low Priced Books with free delivery
Book Depository is the place where you can buy low priced books, usually for better prices than on Amazon and Book Depository always delivers for free. And by buying books from Book Depository you will also help the Dublin Event Guide for no additional cost to you. Use this link: shor.by/BookDepository
  .

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or NLP or some Business related “soft skills”? Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest cost for courses this month will be around 12.99. Check out the website at shor.by/GqCk And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
