Hi all!
This is it! I promised you a new layout or look &feel and this is the FIRST phase of the new look of the Dublin Event Guide. There have been some hiccups (as you can imagine) and it is not yet all perfect, but hopefully it is a promising start. Thanks so much to all the great people who helped with donations for the new software. Let me know (via dublineventguide@gmail.com) if you think it is an improvement and also let me know what you would improve next. I still have a long list of things, but I will do it step by step over the next few weeks. And I am really really excited that we will move now to a less “cobbled together” and much prettier AND much more flexible Dublin Event Guide newsletter.
As with most things in life, there is a sweet and a sour side to the changes, though. The winners are all the Dublin Event Guide e-mail subscribers (you can subscribe on the Dublin Event Guide website if you are not on the list yet!! ;-) ). The relative loosers are the Facebook user of the Dublin Event Guide. (This is not your fault instead it is Facebook’s fault.) If you follow the link at the VERY bottom of this post (if you are reading this on Facebook) you will also see the nice new layout and the FULL Dublin Event Guide If you just read the text version on Facebook, then it will only be a PART of the complete newsletter, only with this intro and the weekend events. The events for next week will not be posted on Facebook.
The Dublin Event Guide will always be full of high-quality content and it is the ONLY publication in Dublin that focuses on all the free cultural events that are there for us! It is full of free events and it is free to susbcribe to/read/use the Dublin Event Guide. However, since nothing in life is free – unfortunately – and the bills for sending this newsletter every week have to be paid, I invite you to help with a voluntary donation.
Any amount will help, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I would suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. That’s just one Euro per month for four, sometimes five editions, where can you get so much value for so little cost. :-)

CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVAL
The Chinese New Year is on Friday 12 Feb this year. It is based on the lunar cycle and therefore changes every year. In 2021 we are moving from the Year of the Rat to the Year of the Ox and to celebrate this Dublin is celebrating the “Dublin Chinese New Year Festival” or as it is suddenly called this year the “Dublin Chinese Lunar New Year Festival”. (No idea why “Lunar” was added for the first time. :-O)
Because everything has to be online this year, it will be very much a different experience. but nevertheless there are a range of events (and nearly all of them are free) from 09-14 February. Check them out at www.dublinlunarnewyear.ie/

THE GREEN NIGHT OF IDEAS – FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL
The FIlm Festival “The Green Night of Ideas” by the French Embassy continues. From 04-18 Feb you can watch LEGACY by Yann Arthus-Bertrand for free (www.facebook.com/events/947572909110704) and HOME, also by Yann Arthus-Bertrand is still available until 12 Feb ie.ambafrance.org/The-Green-Night-of-Ideas-in-Ireland-2021 All films require booking.
Last week I told you about the film “Spread Your Wings” (Donne-moi des ailes), which looks really great when watching the trailer. Some people got back to me with a somewhat frustrating experience with the online screening platform volta.ie for this film. It seems that there are some technical issue with using Chrome as your browser, but MS Edge should work ok.
The films Home and Legacy are screened from a different platform so give it a go and hopefully it will be a smoother experience.

JERUSALEMA CHALLENGES EVERYWHERE
The Jerusalema song by Master KG sticks in your head and is hard to shake off again. Already last year the dance that goes with it got some traction, but now it has the potential to go “ice bucket challenge”-crazy! After a challenge by the Swiss police, the Gardai have “retaliated” here

Covid-19 Fines – Have they lost it?
For the speedy resolution of wars, insurgency and other conflicts, the concept of “Winning Hearts and Minds” is used in modern times. It means that one side is trying to win the conflict not by the use of superior force, but by making emotional or intellectual appeals to convince supporters of the other side.
The idea behind it is that if you convince the other side of the sense of your actions, then you need to fight less and you will ultimately be MUCH more effective, efficient AND there will be less victims.

Our (previous) government made a weak attempt in using this strategy in early days. We were told that laws can’t be enacted to prevent people from breaking the lockdown and Simon Harris kept telling us that we should just hold together for one more push before things would get better.

The current government is clearly taking a different route. Laws are suddenly possible and they are in place and are used a LOT. This week the RTE News reported that the crazy amount of 4500 people have been fined for breaching Covid-19 regulations. www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2021/0205/1195336-garda-restrictions-fines/
The total amount of serious crimes that lead to a charge or summons in 2019 was just measly 550 and out of more than 16,000 burglaries that happened, it seems that just 13 were punished appropriately, based on Central Statistics Office details. www.cso.ie/en/releasesandpublications/ep/p-rcd/recordedcrimedetection2019/crimesleadingtochargeorsummons/I really hope that I am misinterpreting the numbers and that someone can tell me that I made a big mistake, but if not, then this means that breaking the (random) 5km movement restriction is pursued with significantly more vigor than burglaries. :-O
I think we can clearly say that the government has lost the support from the people. Maybe a serious “Winning Hears and Minds” approach would have us in a different place?
