Hi all!

Culture Night was GREAT! It is such a brilliant event and I really hope that you all had a chance to go to it as well. So many events, so many people, such a great atmosphere.

[quads id=1]

But there is always also a downside of a Thursday or Friday event because it has the risk of impacting the Dublin Event Guide completion. Last night I was out from 17:00-00:00 and these 7 hours could have done wonders to this week’s Event Guide. Nevertheless, it is completed now and I hope you will forgive me for having a great Culture Night. ;-)

Luckily a I got some donations again last week, so that the outstanding amount was reduced to EUR 100, but now it is getting super tight again. Only 7 days left before the months is out and EUR 100 need to be found. If you can, please help via PayPal here even if you only have a few Euro, everything counts!! I have also added another way for donations if you prefer to use your credit card via GoFundMe here.

And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or New Look or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!

++++++++

The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.

You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 73,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

+++++++++++

And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week I will neither have a video nor a quote in this Feel Good Slot. Instead I will tell you about a book that I came across and that I definitely recommend. The book is called “The 5 Second Rule : The Surprisingly Simple Way to Live, Love, and Speak with Courage” by Mel Robbins and is explaining and teaching how to overcome procrastination and help you to be a happier and more decisive person with a very single 5-4-3-2-1 count down rule whenever you come to a decision making point.

You can get it from Bookdespository here. There is also a TEDx talk by Mel Robbins that was seen by more than 10mio people here. And I discovered that the Audiobook is also currently on YouTube. I am sure that that is not legally there, so it might disappear soon. Chek it out while it is still there by searching for “Mel Robbins audiobook”.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

I am so glad that I had some support this week! Joan S, Nicole W and Tara R were the wonderful people that helped with a donation! Thanks!! You and all the other donors throughout the year are keeping the Dublin Event Guide alive! Your donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

After the absolute highlight of the year this Friday, which is Culture Night, it is difficult to follow that. BUT Dublin is always busy in a good way and so I did find a few events again that I would suggest to you (and that I will go to).

Canalaphonic and the Canal Bank Market is one of them, then I recommend Sculpture in Context in the Botanic Gardens for a nice weather day and it is the last chance to see the current Science Gallery Exhibition SOUND CHECK.

The Dublin Flea Market and the People’s Art Exhibition is also happening, so lots to do!!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Newmarket Square News

Here is an update on the development at Newmarket Square and from reading this article, I get the impression that the two sides talk about COMPLETELY different things. The current Flea Market and other markets are largely indoor with SOME outdoor element. But since we are in Ireland, this often is not the most comfortable place to be for a market trader or a buyer, so without the large proportion of indoor space, we suddenly we a completely different type of market.

The developer seems to think though that outdoor is all that is needed and that he is completely safeguarding the existence of the markets. A perfect example where both sides have not managed yet to make the other side understand their points!

Read it here: www.fora.ie/dublin-canal-market-planning-3605669-Sep2017/

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!

Say NO to Adblockers!

I use the Internet all the time and know how annoying advertisment can be. But I also spend close to 35 hours every week on this Dublin Event Guide where getting donations is hard work and where it would be sooooo much easier if you just clicked on the links in this Dublin Event Guide when you buy products or services. You are buying anyway and it doesn’t cost you any extra, so it would be cool to help the Dublin Event Guide.

BUT this plan ONLY work if you don’t use adblockers when you look at the Dublin Event Guide.

So, please, give ads a chance HERE. Free services are NEVER free, but they are ad funded. And if you don’t help funding them then soon they won’t be free anymore.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now the place where the weekly nationwide clever event map from our new sponsor Energia will be featured. Full details about the events on the map are on the Energia blog: gturl.eu/Energia_wk38

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Oktoberfest 2017

12:00 – 16:30, Sat 23 Sep

George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 14 Sept – 01 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

There are “Themed Nights” on Monday (“Industry”), on Tuesday (“Pink Tuesday” for the LGBT* community) and on Wednesday (“Whacky Wednesday”) and there is dodgy but authentic ;-) Bavarian Music every evening in the festival tent. The food is also authentic and delicious (at least for a German like me). The beer is not cheap but you expected that. 1 Litre costs EUR 12 and 0.5 Litre is EUR 6.50

Opening hours are Mon-Thu: 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:30+17:30-23:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people) to the Festival Tent. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. There are changes to the opening hours (much more restricted) and the admission system (admission charge on Friday and Saturday evening).

Admission is free apart from the evening slot on Friday and Saturday when admission costs EUR 10 and that includes a EUR 5 meal voucher. This is a big change from previous years when admission was always free, but a meal voucher had to be bought after 22:00. The (nonsensical!!) meal voucher system still applies from Sunday until Thursday after 22:00: If you want to buy beer after 22:00 you will have to have a wristband which you will only get if you have paid for a meal for EUR 6. This is allegedly due to licensing laws. Why nonsensical? Firstly because nobody checks if you actually ate the meal. Then nobody checks who you buy the beer for once you have a wristband and thirdly because no pub makes you buy a meal voucher.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 24 Sep

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The event is explicitly beginner friendly and there will be coaches to help and give advise. An open discussion about parkour training and the recent developments and about setting up a national governing body for Parkour/freerunning in Ireland will be part of the event.

The times on the Facebook Events page say that the event will take place at 01:00, but I assume the person setting it up really meant 13:00 and was just a little confused by clocks. The organisers will be at the DART station in Dun Laoghaire from 13:00-13:15 and will then move to Dun Laoghaire Pier (East or West? More confusion! I assume it is the East pier.)

Admission? Not sure!! I would guess that the meet up is free, but can’t be 100% sure.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Positive Ageing Week 2017

10:00, Mon 25 Sep

Dublin (various locations)

Positive Ageing Week 2017 takes place from 25 Sept until 01 Oct. There will be approx. 100 events in Dublin and the events range from Computer Training and a variety of talks via Coffee Mornings and Singalongs to guided tours in venues like the GPO.

Many events are free, but not all. Find a complete list of all Dublin events via the link below.

When it comes to “older age” related events nobody wants to write down a “starting age” from when you belong to that group out of fear to miscategorise people. So it seems that “older age” is based on a self-categorisation. So this event is for you if you FEEL older OR if you are not really older yet but have plenty of years on the counter and some of the events interest you. ;-)

Oktoberfest 2017

12:00 – 23:30, Mon 25 Sep

The Death of Hurling – Talk

19:00, Mon 25 Sep

National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2

The lecture “The Death of Hurling” with Dr Paul Rouse (School of History, UCD) will take place and is organised by the Folklore of Ireland Society Lecture, in association with the National Library of Ireland.

“When the GAA was founded in 1884, it pledged itself to revive the game of hurling. The official history of the Association tells of a game that was dead (or almost dead) before Michael Cusack worked on its rebirth.

This talk will examine the history of hurling in the years between the Great Famine and the founding of the GAA. Using questionnaires from the National Folklore Collection and a wealth of other national and international sources, an alternative history of hurling will be offered that examines what happens to an ‘ancient sport’ at a time of intense social change.”

Peachy Dublin – Cancer Research and Art

10:00 – 18:00, Wed 27 Sep

The Tara Building, 9 Tara Street, Dublin 2

What are the first thoughts and feelings that come to mind when people hear the term ‘Cancer Research’?

This is the question that the public, was asked, giving them the opportunity to submit their thoughts and feelings through a virtual box. The thoughts and feelings were then distributed to various artists who made art pieces based on them to bring the public’s perception of what cancer research is to life in art form.

The launch night is on Tuesday and is booked out, but the exhibition is also on show on Wednesday and no tickets are required for that.

Admission is free. The event is part of Cancer Week Ireland (cancerweek.ie).

Positive Ageing Week 2017

10:00, Wed 27 Sep

12:00 – 23:30, Wed 27 Sep

At this event “Echoes” is the theme. Find the echoes of some of the greatest Irish tales in the mythology of Europe. Or is it the Irish tales that are echoes of foreign voices?

The Trouble with Mani – Talk

13:10, Thu 28 Sep

Chester Beatty Library, Gardens of Dublin Castle, Dublin 2

Jessica Baldwin, Head of Collections and Dr Jill Unkel, Curator of the Western Collections, Chester Beatty Library will deliver the talk “The Trouble with Mani”. The talk is organised in connection with the Dublin Festival of History.

“The Chester Beatty’s remarkable Manichaean papyrus codices have a complicated history. Written in Coptic and dated to the fourth century, they include unique sacred texts of a lost religion. They survived the almost total destruction of Manichaeanism as well as a World War and the chaos of its aftermath. The poorly preserved papyrus was painstakingly conserved by Dr Hugo Ibscher and his son Rolf. However it remains a complex puzzle for both researchers and conservators due to the challenges of folios in sellotape-sealed Perspex frames and the significant sections that remain unconserved.”

Reminisce about skipping and conkers games played by children and the picturehouses that dotted the area. The illustrations from Bernard’s presentation are taken from his new book Dublin 7 published by The Lilliput Press.

Magazine Fort – Four Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Fri 29 Sep

Positive Ageing Week 2017

10:00, Fri 29 Sep

12:00 – 16:30, Fri 29 Sep

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

MyTaxi increases charges by EUR 2

I know, they would argue that they are not doing that, but if you check your wallet after using a MyTaxi Taxi, you will have EUR 2 less in it than last week, so to me that is an increase.

But let’s start that story at the beginning:
On Wednesday MyTaxi informed their customers that from midnight on that same Wednesday (Thanks for the advance warning! :-O ) MyTaxi drivers would (be allowed to) charge a EUR 2 booking fee for all bookings via the app or phone.

According to MyTaxi, they had told their drivers not to charge that fee in the past, but they are not telling them that anymore and consequently the drivers will/might add that EUR 2 now.

The charge is allowed by the National Transport Authority (NTA) which regulates the taxi fares, so MyTaxi think they are fully compliant with all rules and regulations and probably to add insult to injury, they are claiming on their website (ie.mytaxi.com/pricingpolicy) that “We’re confident that by implementing this change, mytaxi drivers will offer an ever-improving, market-leading service when you need it most.”

Ask your customers and you will be told that you aren’t providing an “ever-improving” service.

I am no expert on Taxi fare history, but it wouldn’t surprise me if that “booking fee” is from the olden days when taxis where “controlled” by radio. You rang their head office/dispatcher and the head office told the driver where to pick you up. The EUR 2 were possibly the charge the head office got. But since you can’t request a MyTaxi taxi any other way than through the app (unless you go to a taxi rank) and because that middle man is not there anymore, it might be that that booking fee is well outdated!?

Either way, it is an effective increase of EUR 2, so now before you drive a metre, you will have to pay EUR 5.60 during the day and EUR 6 at night and – as I reported last week in the Dublin News section of the Dublin Event Guide – this charge will increase in February to EUR 5.80 and EUR 6.00.

I hope we will get the proper Uber service soon (not the crippled Uber service that we have currently)! It seems that some taxi competition is urgently needed. I am aware that Uber is not perfect either and the fact that they lost their license for London in the last few days shows this clearly, but I’d think Uber is fixable.

Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
