Hi all!

This week is a BIG week, but at the same time it is a very problematic week at Dublin Event Guide HQ. It is the 10th anniversary of the Dublin Event Guide after I started it in June 2007!! So some sort of celebration edition should be sent to you this week full of HAPPY BIRTHDAY banners etc. But all went pair shaped this week. I am this weekend at a training course and was meant to start earlier with the creation of this Event Guide, but that didn’t work out. So now I will probably not even be able to finish it completely! Arghhh! In addition my Internet provider stopped working for more than an hour last night. Essential time if you are already under pressure. :-O

[ad]

So what you have in front of you is not the ideal edition of this week’s Dublin Event Guide! It is a little bit of a compromised edition, but I packed in as much as possible nevertheless and all will be better again next week. Hopefully!

Thanks so much to everyone who helped with donations this week. A new month has started and the cost went up to EUR 235 per month, so if you can, please continue to help via PayPal here !

+++++++++

The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 235 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 70,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

+++++++++++

And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 235 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week I selected a quote by entrepreneur and business coach Joubert Botha for the Feel Good Slot. He said

Beauty starts in your head, not in your mirror. – Joubert Botha

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend is sooo much happening: Bike Fests, Garden Square Day, UCD Festival, Street Feast and the new Science Gallery exhibition “Sound Check” opened. Can’t decide!!??? :-) Try going to all! :-P

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Former Pub News

It has emerged that one former pub will be demolished and another one has changed hands for a nice amount of money. The two pubs are Scruffy Murphy’s and the great live music Jazz venue JJ Smyths.

Scruffy Murphy’s which is in a housing estate between Mount Street Lower ad Mount Street Upper, not too far from Merrion Square will be knocked down to make space for a 5- or 6-storey apart hotel with 36 bed rooms.

And JJ Smyth’s on Augnier Street now finally has changed hands for the tidy amount of 1.4 mio. The previous owner, JJ Smyth, has retired and the new owner is a “well known businessman”. It is planned that JJ Smyth’s will re-open as a pub, but most likely not as a Jazz live music venue anymore.

This is according to the Irish Independent here.

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 11 Jun

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Bloomsday 2017

09:00, Fri 16 Jun

Dublin (various locations)

16 June is Bloomsday and it is the biggest imaginable holiday for James Joyce fans. Non-fans on the other hand don’t really get the Bloomsday craze at all. The celebration is based on an imaginary account in the James Joyce novel Ulysses of what happened on 16 June. If Star Trek fans (or similar) celebrated a random imaginary day like Joyce fans do, we would declare them as crazy. ;-)

Joyce Fans dress up in “fancy dress” from the era, eat the breakfast that is described in Ulysses and go for walks along the routes that the Ulysses characters took.

There are lots of different events and they are all listed on www.bloomsdayfestival.ie/ However, the majority of events is not free so I picked some free ones for you and you find them in the list below. Some are Bloomsday events and the other are BloomFringe events.

+ Tues 13 June – 23:30-00:30: Yeats’ Birthday to Joyce’s Bloomsday (Really at that time??)
+ Wed 14 June – 19:00-21:00: Bloomsday – The Hungarian Connection – Film Screening and Play
+ Fri 16 June – 08:00-16:00: Bloomsday at the James Joyce Tower & Museum in Sandycove
+ Fri 16 June – 10:30-13:30: Wandering Rocks: Journey Inside Ulysses
+ Fri 16 June – 11:00-11:45: Joycean Music Hall Meanderings
+ Fri 16 June – 15:00-18:00: Bloomsday Reading & Songs

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Fri 16 Jun

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

You have screwed up badly..become our Prime Minister!!

Theresa May, the current Prime Minister and head of the Conservative Party thought that she could turn a small majority in the parliament into a huge majority by going back on months long promises of NOT having an election and called a surprise election in the UK just two years after the previous one. The result was that she LOST a number of seats, lost the majority in the Parliament and now has to enter a coalition of forms with another party.

Most would agree that this is a SERIOUS screw up, so sizeable that most other self-respecting politicians would hand in their resignation. Not so Theresa May. To pretend that all is good after such a huge error of assessment is quite astonishing. Odd!!!
