Hi all!

What happened there!? This weekend the Dublin Event Guide is completely useless to you. It is arriving so late with you that the day is over and if you are unhappy about that, I am 100% with you. :-( It was what sometimes is called a “perfect storm” when a number of things that shouldn’t come together do come together with a negative effect: Engineers’ Week, Adult Learner Festival, International Women’s Festival and Local Enterprise Week all are happening next week and as a result I have 250 (!!!!) events in this Dublin Event Guide. Tooooo much!

[ad]

The Big 500 Share is still running but not a cent was donated last week unfortunately. It still needs a LOT of support. Check it out in the Dublin News and don’t forget that you will get a free “Secret Dublin” Guide Book if you help!!! ;-)

I am posting this Dublin Event Guide in one stage today. There was no way I could post something earlier that would make sense. Let’s see how next week will be. I hope it will be MUCH better.

+++++++++

And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week the Feel Good Slot quote is

The purpose of fear is to raise your awareness, not to stop your progress. – Steve Maraboli

We sometimes fear change or are afraid to embark on something new in our life. On one hand we want it, on the other hand we find it too scary and asa result we often stop ourselves from pursuing what we want. Fear stops our progress! But that is NOT the purpose of the fear we are feeling! Read the quote again and then think about where fear has stopped you in your life to achieve something. It is still not too late!!!!

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

250 free events in this Dublin Event Guide! That is a record and it is at the same time crazy for one little city. :-)

Where should you go this week? I would recommend the Printfest on Sunday, Green Drinks Dublin on Tuesday and the International Women’s Day events on Wednesday.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500 Share!!

With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide seven weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed end of February or early March and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)

You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.

The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we managed to raise EUR 1120. About 300 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for about 3.5 months. So your help is STILL needed!!!

You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!

The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

Fotos for a Super Price – For all publishers & Facebook Users

If you publish brochures, posters, leaflets or if you just want to make sure that your Facebook Page is regularly decorated with high quality pictures, you should check the best deal for stock photos. I buy the photos that I use on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page through this deal and can 100% recommend it. And since a number of people have asked me recently where I get pictures legally(!), here is the secret:

If you go to http://goo.gl/hFOdQw you will find a (time-limited) deal for 100 stock photos for just $39. That is just 39 cent per picture and the best thing is that the 100 photo credit will never expire. If you have ever looked at Stock Photo sites, you know that this is better than any other stock photo offer.

Roaming Charges NOT going!! – WATCH OUT!

For many years the EU Commission is working on abolishing the mobile phone roaming charges and finally the decision has been made and mobile phone companies are instructed that they have to remove roaming charges from 15 June of this year. Well, that was the plan! But it will not happen! The idea/intention is described here.

But all Irish phone companies have increased or will increase their prices before the deadline and while Vodafone will do what they are instructed and will give you the same price for using your phone abroad as at home, the others seem to clearly break the rules. Three Ireland for example will introduce a new 2 GByte data limit for your travels abroad instead of allowing you to use a properly bigger sized data limit or even the full “All you can eat” data bundle that you have in Ireland. Tesco Mobile will still have Roaming Charges despite the clear EU Commission instruction and the others have not declared fully what they will do.

I see a definite need for the Irish Telecoms Regulator ComReg to step in on the day the new rules become valid, but you should also do something! Compare price plans and LEAVE the service providers that use sinister tactics to hold on to Roaming Charges.

As always the mobile phone companies try to confuse you with their multitude of tariffs and fees, but one thing is certain: The EU Commission’s declared idea was that all mobile phone use when you roam in Europe will be treated EXACTLY the same as when you use the phone at home. If your service provider has no intention to adhere to the rules, you should walk!

By the way, the underhand price increases that most of them try to introduce before 15 June is a change of conditions and therefore you should have the right to terminate the contract even if your normal contract period (12, 18 or 24 months) has not come to an end yet!!

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Every click counts! Thanks!

Dublin Bus Present for 30 Year Olds

They will get a 5 Day Dublin Bus Rambler ticket with a notebook, a pen, a balloon and a badge and 10 randomly selected birthday children will even get a 30 Day Rambler Ticket.

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Engineers Week 2017

Various locations in Dublin and Dun Laoghaire

Engineers Week is a week-long programme (from 04-10 March) of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland, to create a positive awareness of and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession among young people.

The programme contains about 80 event entries for Dublin. There are a good few events repeated a number of times, but that doesn’t take away from the quality of the events. The events that are for the general public and for families seem to be rather skin on the ground, though.

Check the full programme here.

I have a few of the Engineers Week events listed in this Dublin Event Guide.

Humans Need Not Apply – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 04 Mar

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelgänger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Smithfield Horse Fair

09:00 – 13:00, Sun 05 Mar

Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7

The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. If I remember right, the fair is a right that is firmly written down. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.

It seems they couldn’t stop it or make it illegal, but they were able to limit the market to twice per year and so the highly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.

Initially an attempt was made to add music, storytelling and other entertainment to the event so that the horse trading would be pushed in the background, but that didn’t work. So now it is back to horse trading as the main purpose.

Trader need to register with Dublin City and get a trading license for the day and with all these restrictions the market is definitely not what it was before.

Did it solve the problem? Well, it is highly unlikely that the horse traders now only twice a year sell and buy horses. So if they buy and sell more frequently then the trading happens elsewhere where the authorities can’t keep an eye on it. Consequently the problem might have gone away for Dublin, but if we don’t see it, it doesn’t mean it is not happening!

Now the big questions that people ask:
1) What is there to do?
2) I love animals. In the interest of the horses, should I go to the Horse Fair or stay away?

1) There is not much to do at the event, but you will see a good few horses and a horse fair is a bit of a spectacle.
2) Many have the concern that going to the Horse Fair would support bad treatment of animals because sellers and buyers at the fair have been found in the past to mistreat the horses and ponies. However, your attendance (or not) will not have any impact on the horse fair and will also not influence the sellers or buyers to treat the animals in any other way than they normally do. Because the authorities are expected to be there in big numbers the horse handlers are probably on their best behaviour anyway. So it is unlikely that your attendance or non-attendance will have any impact on the welfare of the animals.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 05 Mar

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months. It will take place every Sunday at 12:00 and only 20 places are available on the tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Telescopes in the Night Sky – Talk

14:00, Sun 05 Mar

Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

“Telescopes in the Night Sky” is a talk by John Dolan (IAS) that he will give on Sunday and will repeat again the following Sunday (12 March) in the same location.

Unfortunately many telescopes end up in attics or garages gathering dust. The whole experience of buying, setting up a telescope and using it for the first time can often leave people disappointed and perhaps put them off astronomy for life. Before you buy a telescope, you should have a basic knowledge of the skies, comfortable with how the Earth moves in relation to the stars and willing to learn more.

To help anyone interested in getting started, this talk will cover the best way to start observing the night sky including when and how to begin using telescopes. There will be a few modern telescopes at the talk and you will have an opportunity to learn about the main types their advantages and limitations. You will also be able to chat with a number of our astronomers who will be present.

The talk will be repeated on Sunday 12 March at 14:00 in the same venue.

Admission is free.

Industrial Memories: Witnessing the Institution and the Archive – Talk

14:00 – 16:00, Tue 07 Mar

Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2

“Industrial Memories: Witnessing the Institution and the Archive” is a talk by Dr Emilie Pine (UCD) organised by the School of Histories and Humanities. This talk is based on the Industrial Memories project, which is a UCD project funded by the Irish Research Council under New Horizons 2015-18.

Emilie Pine will consider the ways that digital approaches to archives can tell new stories and make the past accessible in new ways.

The talk focuses on the UCD IRC-funded project Industrial Memories, which digitally re-reads the 2009 Ryan Report on institutional child abuse in Ireland, using approaches such as text analytics and mobile apps to open up the archive.

This document is one of the most important publications in the history of the Irish state. It is also one of the least read. Pine considers how digital approaches might change that.

Admission is free.

Engineers Week 2017

09:00, Wed 08 Mar

International Women’s Day

09:00, Wed 08 Mar

Dublin (various locations)

Today is International Women’s Day.

Wikipedia explains that in different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women for their economic, political and social achievements to a strong political and human rights theme.

There are a number of events in Dublin to celebrate that day, but I found it difficult to find a few free events. What I did find is listed in this Dublin Event Guide separately.

One bigger event for Women in Business is hosted by the Local Enterprise Office Women in Business Networks and Dublin Chamber Commerce, but the PR is so atrocious that I couldn’t even find out where to find out if it is free or not. www.facebook.com/InternationalWomensDayDublin/

If you are involved in free events, please send them to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) or post them on the day on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Group. Thanks!

National Stereotyping and Cultural Identities in recent European Crises – Talk

13:00, Thu 09 Mar

Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2

This is an international and interdisciplinary conference of the ‘Identities in Transformation’ College Research Theme in conjunction with the Coimbra Group Social Sciences and Humanities Working Group Dublin.

“Serious economic, political and societal crises have shaken Europe in recent years. Within these, and contributing to them, politicians, journalists, and other commentators across Europe have revived, revitalised, and instrumentalised deeply engrained and predominantly divisive patterns of national stereotyping and othering. These patterns can be equally observed in Brexit and the financial crisis, in the Ukraine conflict, in anxieties and controversies around increased migration, and in the rise of populist neo-national parties and movements.”

This conference will investigate the crucial cultural dimensions behind recent European crises and will interpret and critique these crisis discourses, to assess their impact and to consider counter strategies.

Experts from fourteen countries across Europe will interrogate the uses and abuses of stereotypes and narratives of othering in crisis discourse through analytic approaches from fields as varied as cultural history, international relations, political science, translation studies and literary analysis.

Find a lot more information on the website below where you also can register for the free 3-day conference.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Are Irish Travellers are an ethnic minority? What about Cork people?

On Wednesday the Taoiseach declared the Irish Travellers as a ethnic minority in Ireland. This was done after many years of refusal to do so by government after government and it begs the question why 01 March 2017 was seen as the perfect day for it because the discussion about it is going on for a long time.

And with that long delay and the repeated refusal, the next question has to be about the WHY travellers were recognised as an ethnic minority. There are just about 29,000 people in Ireland that declared themselves as travellers in the 2011 census. Some still have a nomadic lifestyle but many are now “settled travellers” (an interesting Oxymoron). They speak their own language or rather a dialect that is called De Gammon (by Irish Travellers) or Cant (by non-travellers) or Shelta (by linguists), a language that sees words that derive from Irish mixed with English.

The definition of an ethnic group requires some or all of the following features:
a shared history; a common cultural tradition; a common geographical origin; descent from common ancestors; a common language; a common religion; a distinct group within a larger community.

Looking at these 7 points, I’d say six out of seven are probably applicable (the seventh is the religion which is not different to the majority of people in Ireland). But is that enough to make a group an ethnic group and – if the group is small – to make it an ethnic minority?

Compare that to Cork people! The majority of people that live in Cork have a shared history because they have common ancestors. They definitely have a common geographical origin and have some common cultural tradition that are different from people in the rest of Ireland. They certainly have a common language, boy! …and they are a distinct group within a larger community. So the same six seem to apply to people from Cork as to Travellers. Should we now declare “People from Cork” as an ethnic minority?

Or compare it to full-blooded programmers! They have a shared (recent) history and have common cultural traditions. (Don’t laugh, programmers would call it “cultural”. ;-) ) They fall short on the common ancestors, but share as much a geographical origin as Travellers. Programmers definitely have a common language and to a degree they have a common religion (not in the traditional sense of “religion” though). They are a distinct group within a larger community and you could even say that they have largely a common dress code and appearance. So should Programmers get recognised as an ethnic minority?

Sure, I am over exaggerating and not that serious (at least with the Programmers). But shouldn’t we question any categorisation in our society? I know, this article is not political correct. The right approach would have been to celebrate the Traveller’s new categorisation and say nothing else. But are we maybe much TOO politically correct?

Please note, that I don’t have any answers, but I do have a lot of questions!
