Hi all!

And another Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is out. I got the first part done a little earlier this week and I will therefore update the website and the smartphone app earlier than usual. But then there will be a delay because I have to be somewhere for a few hours and then return back to continue my work on this edition. That’s not ideal, I know, but I hope you will have some events to go to for today and the rest will come then a little later.

[ad]

So I will publish again in two stages. There are already 180 events in this edition. But there will be at least 15 more.

This is the FINAL edition.

Thanks to a big help from a few of you, this month’s oustanding money to pay the bills dropped by EUR 90 last week and now I just need to find EUR 70 before the end of this month. Thanks to all generous helpers! :-) If you can help in any way, your help will be VERY much appreciated!! Make a difference here!

++++

And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote from South African ChangeMaker Rich Simmonds:

Always do your best and you will find that you never need to compare yourself to others. – Rich Simmonds

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Melanie B, Finbarr McG, Catherine E, Paula Ralph, Orla C and Amanda O were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks soooo much! I really appreciate your help and donations will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend I will suggest that you go to the Family Christmas Market in the Dublin Food Co-op. Start that Christmas Market thing early. You know, the first time might be a little awkward, but you will get over it. ;-) And once the first hurdle is taken, then the rest will be sooo much easier.

And on Thursday more Christmas lights will be switched on (at Smithfield Plaza) and at Cow’s Lane. And that leaves O’Connell Street as the last one for the Sunday after (27 Nov).

Alice in Wonderland – Ice Show – Ticket Competition

Thur-Sun 24-27 November 2016
National Show Centre, Swords

Not just one but two amazing shows are coming to Dublin this month: “Alice in Wonderland on Ice” and “Dracula on Ice” will be performed in the National Show Centre by Russia’s Ice Vision performers from 24-27 November and it will be a unique opportunity to see these professional Russian Skaters performing the shows. Ice Vision is based in St. Petersburg and they will be the very first time in Ireland.

In addition to the ice show, there will also be a Winter Wonderland with a free visit to Santa for ice show ticket holders and a Fun Fair with Giant Wheel, Roller Coaster etc and a Christmas Market

Tickets for BOTH shows are available on Ticketmaster and you can get them here www.ticketmaster.ie/dubliniceshows The afternoon performances are for Alice in Wonderland and the evening performances are for Dracula on Ice.

A few weeks ago, I got a pair of tickets for the “Alice in Wonderland” show and I have another pair. It is for two people and for the show on Friday 25 November (16:00). The interest was big last time. Get your name in the hat as soon as possible. To do that, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with ALICE02 in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Tuesday 22 November.

*****And let me whisper something in your ear: If you would prefer Dracula, have a look at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page on Monday!!! There is a possibility that another competition will happen there! ;-) ***********

Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte” – Ticket Competition

Thu 24 Nov – 19:45 at The Teachers’ Club, 36 Parnell Sq West, Dublin 1
Sat 26 Nov – 19:45 at Marino Institute of Education, 9 Griffith Av., Dublin 9

There is nothing like opera sung live and the Dublin Opera Studio presents this great opera with talented singers from Ireland and abroad. As a comedy with light-hearted music this is enjoyable for anyone, even if you have never been to an opera before! It’s about 2 guys who disguise themselves to prove the fidelity of their girlfriends to win a bet but it’s not as simple as they initially expected due to the scheming of a sly old man.

The Opera will be performed in costume with a simple set, it will be slightly cut (to remove any boring parts!), sung in Italian with English surtitles and accompanied by piano.

Tickets are EUR 15/10 and you can get tickets and find more information at www.dublinoperastudio.com

The Dublin Opera Studio made a pair of tickets available for a Dublin Event Guide reader and you can choose on which day you want to go.

To enter the competition send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “COSI FAN TUTTE” as the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Please also tell me which day would suit you? Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Monday 21 November.

Speedfriending – Ticket Competition – Winners!

Sat 19 Nov – 18:00
Trinity Bar & Venue, Dame Street, Dublin 2

Dereck Phelan has another opportunity for you to win tickets to his Speedfriending event. If you would like to meet new people and maybe make some new friends, this event could be for you. It is a low-pressure way to meet new people fast. It is not a dating event, but works similarly to Speeddating: You have 5 minutes with each person to talk about your likes and dislikes and then you move on to the next person. There will be a break (with finger food) and after the event there is plenty of time to talk to some longer than just 5 minutes.

Admission is EUR 10. Register on www.meetup.com/EventsDrinksTalksDublin/events/234407111/

The winners of the tickets for this event are Emiljo Jazxhi, Antje Koßmann and Treasa Hickey. Congratulations!

Promote your product or event through a competition!

If you want to reach more than 24,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.

And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing gear. ;-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Christmas Markets Lighting Ceremonies & Markets

The next Christmas Lighting Ceremonies will be this Thursday at Smithfield Plaza and in Cow’s Lane. And then the only big event missing is the main ceremony on O’Connell Street. It will be on Sunday 27 Nov and will conclude the series. All details about the events are in the listings on the respective day.

There are also big news regarding the Christmas Markets. The good news is that there will be plenty of craft markets at the weekend, but there is also some big not good news! More about it in next week’s Dublin Event Guide. I am also working on updating a Christmas Market Listing and that should be completed in the next few days. Check the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.Facebook.com/DublinEventGuide to find out news about it.

Amazing Northern Lights!

The Dublin Event Guide has found a new sponsor! In times where I need so spend a significant amount of money on fixing some of the backoffice infrastructure, every cent above the monthly amount to pay the bills is extremely important and therefore I am looking for some additional sponsors.

One new one (and more will be written about them here in due course) is the extremely helpful and knowledgable travel agency “Project Travel”. One of their focuses is Northern Lights tours and they know ALL about Northern Lights and Norway. It seems that the lights are super active this year and if you always wanted to see them, here is a great offer for a New Year’s Northern Lights trip. A good price for this basic package and you can add some frills if you want to. Give them a call! You will talk to Guy or Carry and tell them that you saw the ad in the Dublin Event Guide.

Here is all the information: project-travel.ie/basic-northern-lights/

And these are some links for your Christmas Shopping:

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Every click counts! Thanks!

Phoenix Park Rail Tunnel opens

The Phoenix Park Railway Tunnel will be used for the first time for passenger rails this Monday 21 Nov. The tunnel was built in 1877 but was never used for passenger trains. After a 13.7mio upgrade it is now ready and nearly 20 trains will go through it from now on on a daily basis.

If you don’t think you will be in one of the trains soon, but want to experience the tunnel, you can watch a video on this TheJournal.ie site: www.thejournal.ie/phoenix-park-rail-tunnel-3081456-Nov2016/

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO SOCIAL MEDIA FOR EVENTS
We all know how important social media is for events. But how much do you know about the 8 biggest social media networks? In this infographic, we give a quick run-down of all the essentials you should be aware of, along with some quick tips on how to get the most out of them.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Wandering Arpilleras: from Chile and beyond – Patchwork Pictures

24 Nov – 12 Dec (Mon-Thu 14:00-19:00, Fri+Sat: 12:00-14:00)

Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2

Arpillera (Patchwork Pictures) is the term used for the colourful pictures made in many parts of Latin America, by appliquéing scraps of fabric onto a larger rustic (hessian) backing. During the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile they became politically significant since working-class women used them to depict the reality of life under military rule. As the arpilleras escaped the scrutiny of the male-dominated regime, they provided women with a means of recording events as well as obtaining income from abroad.

This exhibition in the Instituto Cervantes consists of 21 Arpilleras from Chile, Northern Ireland, Spain, the UK and Zimbabwe. They were created between 1977 and 2015.

Admission is free.

“The Wild is a celebration of the networks and communities, friends and co-conspirators, memories and visions of Project Arts Centre by the creatives and artists at the heart of the organisation. It is a collaborative group show that will change, evolve and develop over time, as practices and art forms collide, collaborate, push and pull together and apart. Experiences and artworks will accumulate, and the show will shape-shift, grow and shrink at will.”

Men’s Voices Ireland: “Who Cares About Men?” – Conference

09:00 – 17:00, Sat 19 Nov

Wynn’s Hotel, 35-39 Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1

Men’s Voices Ireland is a group formed to bring awareness to, and to create ways to address the many issues affecting boys and men which have found no place in our national conversation.

This inaugural conference brings together a number of speakers who will speak about a number of these issues: the high rate of male suicide; injustices in the family court system: domestic violence against men; and creating a gender-neutral Health Service.

Admission is free. Registration was required via the Eventbrite site below, but I would suggest that you go directly to the event, because you get this information so late. I would be surprised if they would turn you away.

Science Week 2016

09:00, Sat 19 Nov

Dublin (various locations)

Science Week 2016 takes place from 13-20 November. There are hundreds of events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 80 events are in Dublin and 38 of them are free events in Dublin for adults and families. A good few of the events require pre-booking (and some are booked out already).

The website provides an event search facility with good filtering, so you can select the type of event, the target audience, the location etc.

I strongly recommend that you check the programme here www.science.ie/events/find-events.html
There will be some free events included in this Dublin Event Guide, but they will only be a small proportion of all the ones that you might want to know about.

This is a conference about the European Housing Crisis and the full schedule is on the Eventbrite website below. On the same website you should register if you want to go to the event, but because you read this so late, I would probably go directly without registration and take the risk.

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 19 Nov

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Admission is free.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 20 Nov

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Admission is free, but registration is required via the Eventbrite link below.

“The conference will explore the legal-historical background of the Magna Carta in Ireland, the reception of the charter into English law in Ireland, the political and polemical uses to which the charter was put, and its twentieth and twentieth-first century invocations as a living presence in contemporary Irish law. Professor Paul Brand (All Souls, Oxford) will deliver a keynote address on the impact of Magna Carta on the development of English law in medieval Ireland.

A particular concern of the conference will be to explore the paradoxes presented by the reception of Magna Carta into Irish law, above all the contested and often highly restrictive-idea idea of ‘liberty’ that developed in Ireland from the Middle Ages onwards.”

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Angry journalist suggests tourists in Dublin should go home!

The Irish Independent published an article on Thursday 17 November, in which Ita O’Kelly, an angry and probably very narrow-minded journalist suggests that Dublin is chocked by too many tourists and therefore the tourists should go home.

Oddly the whole article doesn’t contain one strong argument that supports her opinion. She claims that it is the fault of all the tourists that Dublin has way too many coffee shops and totally ignores that the many coffee shops have queues out the door every single day of employees on their lunch breaks (tourists don’t wear suits!). Then she has an issue with “falling over” people reading maps when she just wants to go from A to B. Somehow she also blames tourists for the fact that a “vast number of people are begging on the streets”. But there is absolutely no correlation between these two and no evidence is provided how tourists (who in most cases are a lot less “generous” than Irish people when it comes to beggars) have put these beggars in the street. Street “entertainer” (the “” are put in by her) are allegedly also only there for the tourists and the nonsensical (and factually incorrect) sentence “When the city hosts free music events for its citizens, it’s virtually impossible to get a seat as the tickets have been snagged by the tourists.” just crowns a rubbish article. (Most free music events that “the city hosts” are not ticketed and are certainly not intended exclusively for its citizens. And if tickets have to be pre-booked or if they are available at the venue, tourists would never get priority over non-tourists.

Ita O’Kelly, who also seems to be angry about the impertinence of people preferring gluten-free food even if the have no medical condition, wants her Dublin back with no ice-cream parlours, no coffee shops and with a few billion Euro less per year (the money made from tourists in whole Ireland is 7bn per year). She doesn’t say “Make Dublin great again!”, but her thinking seems to be as open minded as Trump’s who wants to “Make America great again”

The oddest part about this rubbish is that the Irish Independent published it and most likely even paid for it!

Dublin is a cool place and visitors as well as inhabitants from all over the world are very very welcome!
