Hi all!

Once again this much too rare occasion of having the Dublin Event Guide in your Inbox on a Friday already. I hope you won’t get tooo confused with that. The reason is that I will be on my “summer holidays” over the weekend. Not much time because I have to be back for the next Dublin Event Guide. But at least some – hopefully warm – days away.

[ad]

Oddly it doesn’t seem to matter when I send the Dublin Event Guide, though. Most of you rightly and understandably want to receive it earlier than the usual late Saturday delivery. But when I send it on a Friday morning already, surprisingly the same amount of people opens it. :-O I winder why that is!?

An update on the bills again: The month is nearly over and we are still EUR 65 short. :-((. Not good! Can you help here?

And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a hyper-viral video that made the rounds on Facebook. It is nothing else but a woman who bought herself a little present and gets an amazing amount of fun from it. She can’t stop laughing and she has a seriously infectious laugh. The woman that got sooooo many people to laugh with her is Candace Payne from Texas and by now more than 138mio people (imagine!!!) have watched her video. Check it out here:

www.facebook.com/candaceSpayne/videos/10209653193067040/

Have a giggle with Candace about nothing much! It will certainly make you feel good! :-)

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week only Kiera M, Mark C and Lorna O’C were so wonderful to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend the selection is relatively easy: Battle for the Bay on Saturday and Sunday, Africa Day on Sunday and Pets in the City also on Sunday. Add the Dublin Flea Market to it also on Sunday and you have one busy weekend!

I will be away for a few days, so I hope you will tell me how you enjoyed the events when I am back. ;-)

One of the most popular yearly events is Bord Bia’s Bloom festival in Phoenix Park and it is back over the June Bank Holiday weekend! This year’s event is five days long and packed with activities and things to see and experience. Kids go free and adults can buy their tickets on the website www.bloominthepark.com

Bord Bia has made 5 sets of 2 Bloom tickets available for a competition and the winners are: Aine Gray, Sarah McGuigan, Gary Tyrell, Caroline Hancox and Orla Cunningham. Congratulations!!

For any budding gardeners it will provide lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you’ll get lots of tips on how to start growing at the show. But if gardening isn’t your thing then you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the Superb Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the Best in Season marquees featuring growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Summer Kitchen will host cookery demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much loved chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Fiona Uyema and Brian McDermott.

With an outdoor music stage, picnic area, engaging spaces, kids playground and lots more besides, the Bloom festival really is the place to be this June bank holiday weekend. Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Do you have any news about things in Dublin?

If you come across something that you feel should be shared about things in Dublin, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will include it here and mention your name as the person that sent it in.

If you are not sure if it is newsworthy, send it to me as well and we will talk about it.

NO Dublin City Soul Festival 2016!

I have to mention it because some event websites (e.g. visitdublin.com) still wrongly list the Dublin City Soul Festival for the coming weekend and also the website of the Dublin City Soul Festival itself seems a little misleading. Unfortuantely there will be NO Dublin City Soul Festival in 2016 because funding could not be found.

There is still some hope that this great festival will return at some stage, but if, when and how is totally unclear.

The statement under the headline “Update” here gives some background information.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE RECOMMENDS ==

EVENT TALK: FESTIVAL TRENDS
Tuesday 31 May – 18:00-21:00 in Wood Quay Venue, Dublin CIty Council, Fishamble Street, Dublin 8
The world of festivals has evolved and grown rapidly across Ireland, becoming almost a right of passage for a younger generation, while catering to an increasingly varied demographic and breadth of tastes. But what does the future look like for Ireland’s festival scene? What does it need more or less of? How will it move forward with new technology and what is RFID?
Come and join us for discussion with leading figures from Ireland’s festival industry, including Modern Green, Foggy Notions & Interlude Festival, moderated by Jim Carroll of the Irish Times & Banter.
Admission is free, but tickets are required and can be booked here.

And you can find lots of events at www.eventbrite.ie … or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Leonardo da Vinci – Ten Drawings from the Royal Collection

06 May – 17 July

National Gallery, Clare Street, Dublin 2

The National Gallery will exhibit ten of the finest drawings by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). They are on loan from the Royal Collection and will be on show for 2.5 months.

Admission to the exhibition is free, but pre-booking is required. A timed ticketing system will be in operation.

You will get to the booking sites via www.nationalgallery.ie/Exhibitions/Leonardo.aspx

In Sight – Dublin through the lens of homeless people

until 29 May

Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, South William Street, Dublin 2

This is a very interesting exhibition. Lynsey Browne and Lucy Ryan gave 45 homeless people a disposable camera and invited them to use them to record scenes from their life. 30 cameras were returned and only 15 photographers came a second time to provide captions for the images.

Some of the pictures are shown at an exhibition in the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. All pictures are on sale.

Some more information about the project is in an Irish Times article here. The In Sight project website is here: www.theinsightproject.ie/

Saoirse – 1916 Rising and St. Patrick’s Hospital exhibition

Mon 25 April – Thurs 30 June

St. Patrick’s University Hospital, James’ Street, Dublin 8

There is not a lot of information about the exhibiton available, but you will find a bit here:

www.eventbrite.ie/e/saoirse-tickets-24677941387?ref=devg

Little Stories, Little Prints – Exhibition

see below

Libraries in Dublin

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create ‘little prints’ on ‘little known events or incidents’ during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.

The schedule for 2016 is

+ March and April 2016 – Central Library
+ May 2016 – Rathmines Library
+ June 2016 – Walkinstown Library
+ November 2016 – Dublin City Library and Archive
+ December 2016 -Finglas Library

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Conflict + The City – Architectural Conference

08:30 – 17:00, Tue 31 May

Liberty Hall, 33 Eden Quay, Dublin 1

Conflict + The City is a free 2-day conference on Tuesday and Wednesday organised by Dublin City Council and the School of Architecture in UCD. Admission is free, but at the time of writing this, there were only 58 tickets remaining. So hurry to the Eventbrite link to book tickets if you are interested,

1916 is over, now we need to move on to the next historical period and it doesn’t get necessarily easier to explain what happened afterwards. This conference focuses on the architectural development of Dublin after the destructions in 1916 and in the following years.

“The two-day public conference will explore the street conflicts in Dublin from 1916 to 1922, as key moments and aspects in pursuit of Irish independence, which led to major architectural destruction, and which in turn brought about significant urban rebuilding schemes. Thinking about the physical make-up of the city, especially the commercial spaces of Dublin’s north city centre, much of how we move through, spend time in and experience the city comes out of these 1920s reconstruction projects. So then, the scars of conflict and the efforts towards rebuilding resonate through Dublin’s architecture today, almost 100 years later.”

But since destruction and reconstruction was not unique to Dublin in the first half of the last century, it will be compared to other cities: from contemporary Beirut to Blitz-time London; from Cold War bunkers to Belfast’s peace-lines.

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites

09:00, Wed 01 Jun

Various heritage locations in Dublin

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) and Rathfarnham Castle were also on that list, but it seems that they both have been removed. Which is a big loss. With that in mind, there is a high risk that worse will happen to the Free Wednesday in coming months. Use it as long as it lasts.

Last month, things changed half-way through the Tuesday before the Free Wednesday, so I strongly recommend that you check the “Free Wednesday” link on the left of www.heritageireland.ie to find out if more got changed. …and in case the link is gone, that is a bad bad sign.

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Bugs vs Drugs: Antibiotic Resistance & Farming

18:00 – 19:30, Wed 01 Jun

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The Health Research Board discusses the threat that antibiotic resistance poses to global public health.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the use and misuse of antibiotics accelerates the emergence of drug-resistant bacterial strains. If these new strains of bacteria cause an infection, there will be no immediate treatment and the patient may die. In the U.S., 700,000 deaths occur every year due to antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotics are not just used to treat human infections, but are also being misused in animal agriculture. 80% of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. are for animal agriculture.

Wired and National Geographic journalist and author of SUPERBUG, Maryn McKenna, Andrew Murphy (GP and Director of the HRB Primary Care Clinical Trial Network Ireland) and Fidelma Fitzpatrick (Senior Lecturer at RCSI and Consultant Microbiologist at Beaumont Hospital) will discuss this problem.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Big Time Crime vs Small Time Crime: Speed Limits and Killing people!

I got caught breaking the law! Yes, it is hard to admit (especially for a German :-) ), but I did break the law (unintentionally) and I got caught AND paid for it. A few weeks ago, I drove home on a very quiet Sunday evening on a well built and well lit street in Dublin. Hardly any traffic, no pedestrians or cyclists and I was not distracted by mobile phone or anything else. All was well…

…until about two weeks later when a letter arrived, telling me that I was recklessly breaking the law. What a bad boy! I know! I drove 59 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. I had to pay EUR 80 and will be punished for three years due to the 3 points I also got.

Interestingly, if I had driven 120km/h in a 50km/h zone, I would have been punished in the EXACT same way. Odd!!!

Then on Tuesday, I heard about the shooting of another gang member of the two feuding Dublin criminal gangs. We might think, that it is not the worst if they terminate each other, but keep in mind that in every killing one side will win over the other and it will give that “winning” side more power, which is never a good thing when you talk about criminals. These ongoing killings are a bad bad thing on another level. As we have seen, the risk for random bystanders is significant, because these killers seem to have trouble at times knowing who they really want to get and also because they are getting more and more ruthless.

So how does my speeding tickets link to the gang war in Dublin? — It doesn’t really! I am not the type of person who complains that the police should spend their time on hunting down the big criminals and let the small criminals go. I broke the law and got punished, which is annoying but fair. But when it comes to fairness, it seems that bigger criminals get away with a lot more.

For Friday of this week a big “clampdown” on speeding has been announced. It’s easy!! Put up a few vans around the country in locations that are not really accident hotspots and then just send the tickets by post. You will get lots of money back and have a nice Press Release about the success and the catching of the criminals.

At the same time, the gangs, make millions through drugs and from their HUGE amount of properties that most likely were bought from drug money as well. Clampdown? Not much!

Is it resources? I don’t think so! It is just easier to get honest people to own up and pay up for their small crimes than to get criminals to own up to their big crimes. It not wrong to punish the small time criminals, but it is wrong to let the big time criminals get away with as much as they do.

If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
