How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

“Hysteria” is a performance art film that will be screened from Tues 16-Sun 21 February from 20:00 until 08:00 at the Science Gallery. You can watch it from Pearse Street and headphones are available to listen to the atmospheric score that accompanies the film.

It is screened in connection with the curernt Science Gallery exhibition TRAUMA and expresses the trauma that soldiers experienced who came back from fighting in Word War I.

Maurice Keliher is a choreographer, director and actor and he was comissioned to create this film. It features military medical footage, sourced from the Wellcome Library, that was filmed at two English hospitals during World War I. It documents the anguish of some of the patients: symptoms of so-called ‘war neurosis’ suffered by returning soldiers – now referred to as PTSD.

The film is 16 minutes long and will be repeated throughout the nights until the TRAUMA exhibition closes next Sunday.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

A Psychic & Holistic Fair takes place in Bray on Sunday. There will be over 35 stands, some of Ireland’s top Mediums, Psychics, Tarot and Angel card readers will give One-to-One private & personal readings and a wide range of treatments, advice and information will be available about holistic therapies and therapists. The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

It is screened in connection with the curernt Science Gallery exhibition TRAUMA and expresses the trauma that soldiers experienced who came back from fighting in Word War I.

Maurice Keliher is a choreographer, director and actor and he was comissioned to create this film. It features military medical footage, sourced from the Wellcome Library, that was filmed at two English hospitals during World War I. It documents the anguish of some of the patients: symptoms of so-called ‘war neurosis’ suffered by returning soldiers – now referred to as PTSD.

The film is 16 minutes long and will be repeated throughout the nights until the TRAUMA exhibition closes next Sunday.

“Sisters of the Revolutionaries” is the story of Margaret and Mary Brigid Pearse.

Teresa and Mary Louise O’Donnell will explore the childhood of the Pearse family, the effect of the Easter Rising on the lives of Margaret and Mary Brigid, and the turbulent, often toxic relationship between the two sisters. This talk is derived from material from a forthcoming book written by the O’Donnell sisters and some of Mary Brigid Pearse’s harp arrangements will be performed by Teresa and Mary Louise as part of the event.

From 22 February – 24 March the exhibition “Rathmines and the 1916 Rising” will be on show in Rathmines Library and it will be launched on Tuesday 23 February at 17:00.

“Rathmines and the 1916 Rising: People and Places” commemorates and communicates the story of Rathmines and the Rising through stories, people, places and events, including some that are less widely known. The exhibition is the result of research by the Rathmines Initiative into the multi-faceted heritage of Rathmines which was generally prosperous and staunchly unionist in 1916 yet the home of many activists, (republican, but also pacifists, suffragists and socialists), and the location of many initiatives that laid the foundations for the Rising.”

Five Holocaust survivors who are living in Ireland recount their stories in this documentary. The screenings will be in the Central Library Activities Room. This is a three part series about women and social justice in 1916. The series will reflect on women in the era of the 1916 Rising, how they lived and worked and what roles women played in society with topics to include living conditions in the tenements, the suffragettes and more.

Each event will feature a speaker and songs from the era performed by the An Góilín Singers Group. There will be an audience Q&A and the event will be recorded for broadcast on Near FM.

LASC Weds talks take place on the last Wednesday of every month and these talks are about core issues facing Latin America, examining political, social, economic, environmental and cultural realities facing the region.

This month the talk will focus on “Gender-Based Violence in Honduras” by Sorcha Pollak. Sorcha Pollak is a reporter with the Irish Times. From Dublin, Pollak developed an interest in Latin America after spending a year living in the Peruvian city of Iquitos in the Amazon jungle in 2005. She has travelled extensively through South and Central America.

Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the world and it is the nation’s widespread culture of violence against women that is so shocking.

The Trinity Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at TCD is inviting to a talk by Dr Zoltán Skoda. He will talk about “The Hungarian Calendar: A Hypothesis of a Time Slip of 200 Years in the Chronology”.

The Hungarian Calendar is a chronological system which maintains that Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar in the year 154 CE. The officially accepted and universally propagated date for the introduction of the Julian calendar is the year of 45 BC, which differs by 198 years from the proposed date (CE 154) of the Hungarian Calendar.
Only one explanation is possible for this 198 year difference: we have either a hidden surplus history of 198 years or 198 years of our history have been invented. A special surprise for the Irish Calendar will be revealed.

The Roots Band “Brand New Switcharoo” will perform in the Harbour Bar. Admission is free.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

Bad Boy Jake are every Wednesday in the Gypsy Rose Rock & Blues Bar playing their rock, blues and American.

Ten comedians battle it out for the title in this Corrupt Comedy Competition at the Bray Comedy Festival. The competitors are Duane Doogan, Laura Byrne, Sean Oh Boyle, Hatem Abnoun, Chris Williams, Daffyd Dilly O’ Shea, Niall Farrell, Padraig Mac Liam, Andrew Joyce and Therese Cahill.

Speacial guest headliner is Damian Clark from Australia and 2015 competition winner Lisa Casey.

The Aontas Adult Learner’s Festival takes place from 22-27 February and comes with more than 140 events in the Greater Dublin Area.

All events are free, but not all are exclusive to the festival, instead they might be just the normal and regular free events in the National Gallery or the Public Libraries etc. For that reason, a good few events are listed in this Dublin Event Guide, but because there are so many and because the AONTAS website has a good list, I only added some of the AONTAS events here.

The Green-Schools Expo 2016 will showcase the work of the Green-Schools programme. 23 exhibiting schools will cover six Green-Schools themes (Litter & Waste, Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity, Global Citizenship). There will also be talks and workshops throughout the day. The website says that it is suitable for all ages, but I am not sure if that refers to all ages of school going kids or to all ages in the wider sense.

Admission is free, but tickets are required. The tickets are issued for four time slots and at the time of writing this only tickets for the time slot from 15:30-17:00 were still available.

During the AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival, the Marsh’s Library is waving its admission charges on Monday and from Wednesday until Saturday (not on Tuesday!).

Marsh’s Library, next to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, is a very well-preserved library of the 18th century and it is well worth a visit. At the moment they are also showing the exhibition ‘The Unicorn & the Fencing Mouse’, which consists of doodles, annotations and marginalia found in a selection of books from their collection.

“Let’s Talk and Walk” are historical walking tours in Dublin that are organised by Dublin City. All walks are free, have a duration of 1.5-2hr and are lead by a historian.

The 1916 Walk and Talk series will visit the main areas of action of the 1916 Rising, both in the city centre and the suburbs and the full programme is available in PDF format here.

The next walk will take place on Thursday. It is called “Easter Rising 1916: From the Four Courts via Church Street and Collins Barracks to Arbour Hill”.

Starting point is outside the main entrance of Four Courts on Inns Quay and it will finish at Arbour Hill Cemetery.

Three talks by Michael Grant will trace the story of the opera art form from its beginning in Renaissance Italy and ending with opera today – a global big business in the digital era.

The talks will take place on 11+18+25 February.

“Political & Social Life In Dublin In 1916” is the first talk in a series of four lunchtime talks. Historian and journalist Padraig Yeates will give the talk.

Dublin was deeply divided by religion, politics and class in 1916. Divisions brought sharply to the surface in the 1913 Lockout were further exacerbated by the impact of the First World War. This talk will look at how the war changed life and politics in the capital across the social classes in the lead up to the Easter Rising, affecting areas as diverse as municipal politics, living conditions, public entertainment and crime. Padraig Yeates is the author of “Lockout: Dublin 1913” and the trilogy “A City in Wartime: Dublin 1914-1918”; “A City in Turmoil: Dublin 1919-1921” and “City in Civil War: Dublin 1921-1924”.

“Tracing your Revolutionary Ancestors: Family History research sources for 1916” is a lunch time lecture series from Mon 22 – Fri 26 February in cooperation with Accredited Genealogists Ireland and the AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival.

The five lectures will introduce genealogical sources that might be used to document ancestors who were alive in 1916 or who were active during the Rising.

The Library of Trinity College Dublin presents “Library as Place; Place as Library”, a half-day seminar in the Trinity Long Room Hub on 25 February 2016.

This event will explore and debate how changing educational dynamics and user behaviour are impacting on current and future library spaces and how they are redefining the physical library.

Speakers will include leading architects, with both international and national experience, as well as a range of experts talking about the current Irish experience of library design. The seminar will conclude with a dialogue to imagine “What will the Library look like in 2030?”

The event is part of “The Library of the Future; the Future of the Library”, a programme of events for 2015-2016. The seminar will be followed by a reception.

Angus Mitchell, who edited and annotated “The Amazon Journal of Roger Casement”, will talk about Roger Casement.

Roger Casement was born in Sandycove in 1864. Later he worked for the British consular service and his reports into human rights abuses by the Belgian government in the Congo earned him the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George in 1905. He was even knighted for his report on the abuse of rubber industry workers in Peru.
But he became disillusioned with the activities of the British Empire and therefore fostered relations with Germany during World War I and on Good Friday 1916 he was arrested at Banna Strand, County Kerry after landing from a German submarine.
He was executed for High Treason on 3 August, 1916.

Architect and lecturer Stephen Mulhall will chair this discussion that will explore the role of drawing within a local authority and the connections between fine art, architecture and engineering.

The panel consists of Julie Merriman (Artist), Ruairí Ó Cuív (Public Art Manager, Dublin City Council), Michael Corcoran (Consultant, Engineering Department, Drainage Services, Dublin City Council), Patrick Gorman (Senior Executive Engineer, Road Design Division, Dublin City Council), Stefan Lowe (Senior Executive Architect, City Architect’s Office, Dublin City Council), Marianne O’Kane Boal (curator, and art and architecture critic).

To celebrate the AONTAS 10th Annual Adult Learners’ Festival, the National Print Museum is inviting to a special guided tour of the Museum’s permanent collection, delivered by adult learners from the Culture and Heritage Studies programme at the National Print Museum.

As part of this combined training and work experience programme, all learners train in tour guiding at the museum and will demonstrate their newly accomplished tour-guiding skills on Thursday.

During the tour, you will be brought on a journey of discovery through the Museum’s three-part print-shop style exhibition; the composing, printing and finishing areas. You will also have the opportunity to do the typesetting and printing yourself.

A series of 8 free life drawing workshops on Thursdays from 21 Jan until 10 March takes place in the National Gallery.

The workshops are suitable for adults and teens and will explore aspects of life drawing. They will be led by artist Caomhán Mac Con Iomaire.

“Mientras duermes / Sleep tight” is the next film screening in the Cine Cafe CLub series of the Instituto Cervantes. The film will be screened in Spanish with English subtitles.

“Puppet Shows through history and cultures” is a talk in the Alliance Francaise by pupeteer Miriam Lambertwith support from the Google Cultural Institute.

From October until February, the Italian Institute of Culture is running eight screenings of Italian Opera. The screenings starts at 18:30 and admission is free, but booking is required via iicdublino@esteri.it

“No estamos solos / We are not alone” is a documentary film about social movements in Spain.

“Why did thousands and thousands of citizens take to streets and squares throughout Spain to express their indignation at the cuts, the privatisations, the evictions and the political corruption? The film portrays the strength and imagination of social movements as they condemned the downfall of democracy. A spontaneous period of rebellion, the participation of civil society, and one that will undoubtedly mark the future of political life in Spain.”

The film will be screened in Spanish with English subtitles. Admission is free.

“Women of the Easter Rising” with historian Liz Gillis ( author of “Women of the Irish Revolution”) will look at the role women played in the Easter Rising, including many less well known figures. It will explore the involvement of women in the revolutionary bodies Inghinidhe na hÉireann, Cumann na mBan and the Irish Citizen Army and show how vital the women were in the revolutionary movement not just in 1916, but in the years following.

A new series of lecture/performances hosted by the Irish Traditional Music Archive begins on 25 February.

At the first event “The Long Road to Glenties”, an archival film footage featuring Donegal fiddle player John Doherty and American folk music icon Pete Seeger will be screened.

In 1964 Pete Seeger travelled with his family to the remote Bluestack mountains of Co. Donegal to spend a single day in the company of folk music legend John Doherty. Now, over 50 years later “The Long Road to Glenties”, a presentation by Danny Diamond and Conor Caldwell, reveals the archival film footage and introduces us in more depth to the life and times of this remarkable fiddle player.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

A new Government will be elected today. If you are Irish and are on the electoral register you are allowed to vote and you SHOULD! You only have the chance ONCE every 5 years to influence how the country is run, so you should take that opportunity.

…and if you don’t cast your vote you are not allowed to complain about the government for the next 5 years! :-)

Five Holocaust survivors who are living in Ireland recount their stories in this documentary. The screenings will be in the Central Library Activities Room. For some reason lists the time for the screenings as 12:00-14:00, but the documentary is only 45 minutes long.- Maybe they are screening it twice per day?

The yearly Lollipop Day is the main fund raiser for the Oesophageal Cancer Fund and this year it takes place in two parts on Friday and on Saturday. On Friday 26 Feb the event will be outside Debenham’s in Henry Street and on Saturday 27 Feb at the same time outside Dunnes in Grafton Street.

Volunteers will sell Lollipops and Deric Hartigan from TV3 will be the MC and the Dublin Gospel Choir will sing.
