Hi all!

I have to say it at some stage and I was trying to hold back as long as possible, but I can’t any longer:

[ad]

Do you realise that it is less than 3 months until Christmas?? :-O I know! It is a shock, right? And it is at least as shocking that Brown Thomas already have their Christmas shop open for quite some weeks. But see, they have nothing else to sell and leaving the floor empty wouldn’t look good, so they really are between a rock and a hard place. LOL

Anyway, there is a lot more to focus on before Christmas (but it does freak me out sometimes how fast time moves!). This week moving time and looking back on it is coming up at the Dublin History Festival. Do you regularly check the Joerg’s Picks? You see there what I have on my short list.

And thanks a lot again for the wonderful people that helped with donations last week, It is a struggle every month and it seems to get tougher to get the money, so I appeciate your help hugely!

Here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good slot is a short video clip with Anthony Robbins about BEING YOURSELF:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2uqfOltqqk

It is not too easy to find a short clip from Anthony Robbins, but this one is a good one. I find him inspirational and empowering and he will be in London with his 4 day seminar “Unleash the Power Within” in April 2016. That is still some while away, but there is an Early Bird offer available now until 01 October. I honestly think that everybody should go to his training, but it is not cheap and therefore – if you can’t go – I suggest you spend some time watching the many You Tube clips that are available.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Mateusz L, David K, Caroline O’C, Heather C, Joan S, David D, Sillybilly.ie and Elaine M D were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend the People’s Art Exhibition is back at St. Stephen’s Green. If you like history, you will love the Dublin History Festival.

In Ranelagh is a Garden party to finish the Arts Festival. The Oktoberfest, Sculpture in Context and the SECRET Science Gallery Exhibition are still continuing and there is another German Navy ship in Dublin, this time it is not a sailing ship, but a more modern Navy Vessel, called the “Ludwigshafen am Rhein”. And Ludwigshafen is quite near to where I am from. ;-)

Ah and the Dublin Flea Market is making its monthly appearance and the Vegetarian Day Festival is a yearly event.

Sunday Soul with Danny G & the Major 7ths aand Pia Dunne & the Eleusians – Ticket Competition

Sun 27 Sept 2015 – 20:00-00:00
Bello Bar, Portobello Harbour, Dublin 8

Two of Dublin’s most soulful groups will be in the Bello Bar for a gig on Sunday 27 Sept. They are “Danny G & the Major 7ths” and “Pia Dunne and the Eleusians”.

Danny G is Daniel Groenland, a singer, flautist, guitarist and composer who was with the great funk band Mob Fandango and still performs with the African-trad fusion outfit Tig Linn and the Discovery Gospel Choir. His band, the Major 7ths, love harmonies and grooves and the 7-10 musicians in a line-up with four of them singing, will bring you the soulful sounds of Neo-Soul artists like D’Angelo and Dilla, as well as the old classics like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield.

Pia Dunne is fronting the Elusians that consist of several backing singers and a lineup of jazzy musicians. Pia is a song writer and an outstanding soul, blues, jazz and folk singer with a smooth and melodic voice that makes you want to listen for hours.

Admission for this gig in the Bello Bar is EUR 8 on the door or EUR 6 on Eventbrite here.

Danny G, a good friend and supporter of the Dublin Event Guide, has made two pairs of tickets available for this gig and the winners are Conor Healy and Louise Butler.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Phone & Internet Scams – Beware!

In two separate articles this week, Phone & Internet scams were described and you might want to read the information so that you won’t be affected. Have a read here:

www.rte.ie/news/2015/0925/730249-phone/

Positive Ageing Week

Positive Ageing Week takes place from 01-09 October and comes with a good few events all over Ireland. The AgeAction website at www.ageaction.ie/positive-ageing-week-2015 gives some more details and it also has a list of all events.

I am not too sure, however, if an events list in the form of a Google Doc spreadsheet is really the best and suitable way to provide this information. Even computer-experienced people struggle a little with that spreadsheet and if we assume that the target group of the Positive Ageing Week might on average be a little more challenged with computer-based information gathering, a Google Doc spreadsheet is definitely the wrong way to go.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==

The Eventbrite Picks didn’t reach me this week, I hope they will be back next week.

In the meantime you can find more events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sculpture in Context – National Botanic Gardens

David Claerbout Exhibition

14 Aug – 11 Oct (11:00-20:00)

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The exhibition consists of a number of video installations by Belgian artist David Claerbout, but reading the description of the exhibition doesn’t explain anything at all, so you better just go and look at it.

Who writes that stuff? “Claerbout’s multiple video installation at Project Arts Centre will challenge conventions of exhibition-making, attempting to further our efforts to perceive what it is to exhibit while exhibiting.” Or this “His is a practice where burgeoning awareness creeps up on you as a viewer, nagging questions of authenticity start to haunt, and our idea of scale based on a fixed position in space becomes unsettled, destabilised, set adrift.”

www.projectartscentre.ie/event/david-claerbout/

To celebrate the year of design, Irish Design 2015 and the National Print Museum host exhibition “A World to Win – Posters of Protest and Revolution”, organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

The exhibition explores a century of posters agitating for political change. From the “Votes of Women” campaigns of the early twentieth century to the recent occupy movements, political activists around the world have used posters to mobilise, educate and organise. The exhibition contains seventy posters drawn from the Victoria and Albert Museum collection and will feature a diverse array of artists, graphic designers and print collectives.

Admission is free. www.nationalprintmuseum.ie/

El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State

30 Jul – 18 Oct

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

“El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State” reflects on the artistic and cultural community who gave voice to a new image for the emerging Irish state after the Easter Rising and a visual language for its politics.

The exhibition brings together a significant body of works from the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, by El Lizzitsky (1890 – 1941), one of the most influential artists of the 20th century who is shown here for the first time in Ireland.

Ayotzinapa: One Year On – Commemoration & Protest

12:00, Sat 26 Sep

Mexican Embassy, 19 Raglan Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

On 26 September 2014, 43 students from a teacher-training college were participating in a demonstration when they were rounded up by the police and – according to reports – handed over to Guerreros Unidos, a criminal gang of drug traffickers. They were never seen again. Their disappearance is showing what a close cooperation exists between the state including the police and paramilitary drug gangs, despite the alleged “war on drugs”.

The Latin America Solidarity Centre has organised a demonstration at the Mexican Embassy to express solidarity and demand justice for the 43.

Oktoberfest 2015

12:00, Sat 26 Sep

George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but have we heard of any other events or pubs where you need to buy meal vouchers?

I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 26 Sep

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

Oktoberfest 2015

12:00, Sun 27 Sep

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 27 Sep

12:00, Fri 02 Oct

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.

“Over the past 100 years there have been punctuated moments of rebellion, incitement and terrorism shifting the optic in how the role of the Irish revolutionary is perceived. Admission is free and tickets are available via 01 677 8899 or in person at Dublin Theatre Festival Box Office, 44 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.

“It’s actually pretty hard to make an Alien Documentary. Aliens are cagey. They don’t like signing release forms, talking about themselves or being on stage. Their language is complex and their translators self-appointed.As a result the transcripts we’re working from are incomplete and unreliable.
The biggest challenge we’ve faced, however, is that aliens frequently burst into song. Disclaimer: Aliens do not have perfect pitch or harmonise well together.”

In a series of provocative and ironic interventions the audience are “future historians”, trying to make sense of today’s mistakes with the luxury of 100 years of hindsight. This work is the first step in a larger scale event to be staged in European and Canadian port cities.

There will be a series of events from 16:00-19:00 and you are invited to drop in and leave when it suits you. Meet at the CHQ entrance. Admission is free.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

The Volkswagen Scandal!

What a shocking revelation! One of the most trusted car companies has systematically cheated for years. The software that delivers low emission results when a Diesel car is tested on a stationary test stand and then increases the emission output 20-30 (!!) times when the car is driven on the street is used in cars at least since 2009. The scandal emerged in the context of American cars due to the low emission limits in California, but why was the software used in other VW Diesel cars as well? Maybe because many countries – like Ireland – charge motor tax based on emissions? It could mean that all affected Diesel car owners will have to pay higher taxes from now on or even respectively. What a disaster!

But there is another interesting aspect: If you follow Formula 1, you are probably surprised that year after year quite significant changes are made to the rules for engines and other parts of the car, but despite all that, the F1 teams still have quite similar performing cars when the new season starts. They are competing, are not discussing with each other what they will do in the next season and still the differences are small.

Volkswagen indicated that they were not able to stay within the low emission rules in California and at the same time produce a car that is enjoyable to drive. Is VW just exceptionally bad or – with the Formula 1 example in mind – could it be that all other manufacturers of Diesel cars struggle in the same way with the emission limits? And taking that one step further, could it be that some or all other manufacturers used similar deception strategies to also have two different performance levels?

Could it be that we are currently only looking at the tip of the iceberg and soon the scandal will extend to all car manufacturers in that Diesel class?

And one other thing: If a company uses dishonesty, secrets and cheating tactics to achieve their goals in such a major way and were able to keep it under wraps for many years, can anybody really think that governments won’t do the same? So do we really know everything about what happened at – for example – 9/11?
