Hi all!

Last week was an epic week: My most liked event of the year, the former Street Performance World Championship took place. Then Germany won the World Cup. And on top of that we had real summer. Can it get better? :-)

[ad]

Well, it seems to continue being good and that is perfect: This weekend the Rose Festival, an interesting sounding World Music Festival (“Hotter than July”), the Bray Summerfest and the Bray Air Display and later in the week the Festival of Curiosity will keep us busy. What a great month!

Before we get started with the regular bits and then get into the events, I have a question. It is a very serious question and I really need some feedback from you (to dublineventguide@gmail.com please): What can I do to increase the value the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) brings you? What other services or additional features would make this weekly e-mail magazine more valuable to you?

The background to this question is a financial one: The suggested donation of EUR 1 per month from lots of subscribers would make a huge difference to the Dublin Event Guide and would give me the opportunity to put more time and more resources in it, but only a tiny minority of subscribers seems to feel that they get a value of EUR 1 per month. So what could I do to get more people to get value?

Please send me an e-mail with your opinions: dublineventguide@gmail.com

And here are the weekly appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Recently the donations dropped significantly. Maybe it is the bad times, but EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints! Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 21,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 47,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot quote is a “wise” thought:

A person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected. – Good energy is contagious!

We sometimes think to get more from a person we have to give them a telling off, or we have to make clear to them what is expected, demand, complain, etc.? In most cases it doesn’t work. Try the inverse approach: Appreciate to get more!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week only Lorraine F was so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. And I really appreciate the help, but I need more help!! Thanks! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend I will go to the Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park. I know it sounds more like an event for retirees, but the festival is a lot better than it sounds. ;-) In addition I will try to fit the “Hotter than July” World Music event in. And then there is the Bray Summerfest and the hugely popular Bray Air Display, a 3-hour airshow on Sunday. This weekend might not be long enough to fit in all the great events! :-)

If you like Comedy, next week is a bumper week with two additional Edinburgh Previews and some new emerging events. I am counting at least EIGHT free comedy events! That’s a lot!

The Ghosts in Our Machine is a documentary that illuminates the lives of individual animals living within and rescued from the machine of our modern world. Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

Pigsback | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

(You can also copy these links and send them to your friends.)

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

“City & Western” Festival for Garth Brooks Fans

It has been announced on Wednesday that Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Ireland and Dublin’s tourism industry, hope that the disappointed Garth Brooks fans that had trips to Dublin planned and booked will still come despite the cancellation of the concerts between 25-29 July. And to give all these visitors something to do, a series of Country & Western events have been organised under the banner “City & Western”.

A Bluegrass, Country and Roots Festival in Whelan’s; a live outdoor music in the Dame Street district called “In Lonesome Dame”, with bales of hay and square dancing lessons; an “OK Corral” busking trail from Grafton Street to Wolf Tone Square on Sat 26 July and the “Stetson and the City” music trail at the airport, restaurants, bars and shops that will feature Irish country and folk bands.

Check on www.visitdublin.com/ and via #DublinGoesCountry on Twitter for more details.

Hmmm, not sure if Irish Country Bands really make up for the cancellation, I have experienced many outstanding bands in Ireland, but not many Country Bands were part of that. Maybe we should send all visitors to Merrion Square where the City Picnic (formerly: Soul Picnic as part of the Dublin City Soul Festival) will take place. Good music is guaranteed in Merrion Square!

Dublin City Libraries Summer Children’s Programme

During July and August the Summer Programme will take place again in Dublin’s Libraries for children. There will be Theatre and Yoga, puppet shows, art, drama, music, storytelling, Viking workshops and more and all for children and families. All events are free. Booking is recommendd, though. Find a description of some of the vents with links here www.dublincity.ie/main-menu-services-recreation-culture-dublin-city-public-libraries-and-archive-events/summer-2014 and at the bottom of that page you can also see a link to download the PDF brochure.

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie

19 June – 23 August

Coach House, Dublin Castle Gardens, Dame Street, Dublin 2

Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie with Flora C. Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick

Dale Chihuly’s vibrant coloured glass installations and opulent Chandeliers hang in many of the world’s most prestigious museums and public spaces including the Victoria and Albert museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre in Paris.

A world premier of “Ulysses Cylinders” inspired by James Joyces’s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie’s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.

Working with Leslie’s drawings on paper, artists Mace and Kirkpatrick constructed fragile glass drawings, which Chihuly’s team studio amalgamated into individual Cylinders of glass wrapped in gold leaf. Each drawing offers a visual trigger into selected narratives of Ulysses as recounted by Joyce.

Admission is free. www.dublincastle.ie/NewsEvents/Title,31395,en.htm

Chihuly will also exhibit his signature work at Solomon Fine Art (Balfe Street, Dublin 2) from 19 June – 31 July. Admission is free.

Chester Beatty’s A-Z: from Amulet to Zodiac

11 July – 01 Feb 2015

Chester Beatty Library, Garden of Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2

One A is for Amulet, B is for Beatty, C is for Calligraphy…. Chester Beatty’s A to Z will take you on a journey through a selection of highlights, showcasing the breadth and quality of this collection.

This curators’ choice show is a visual treat with universal appeal. Each letter of the alphabet is matched to a word that is representative of something characteristically associated with the collection. Featuring many works seldom or never before seen in public, the exhibition will explore the threads that link cultures across the Western, Islamic and East Asian worlds.

Opening hours: From 10:00-17:00 on Mon to Fri (closed Mondays from 1 Oct), 11:00-17:00 on Sat, 13:00-17:00 on Sun

Vanished Portraits – A documentation by Karol Jozw

17-31 July

Centre for Creative Practices (CFCP), 15 Pembroke Street, Dublin 2

An exhibition of photography taken by Jozwiak while travelling through Bulgaria alone. Feeling lonely and weary of travel he put together this collection of melancholic photographs. What attracted the author’s attention there was an untypical form of commemoration of the dead in which photography happened to play a crucial role. An in-depth research and documentation of this phenomenon led to the uncovering of some intriguing anthropological and cultural traces.

The exhibition opening is on Thurs 17 July from 18:00-22:00. Admission is free.

Bat Walk – Grange Castle Business Park

21:30 – 23:00, Sat 19 Jul

Grange Castle Business Park, Clondalkin

At this Bat Walk, join An Taisce and Paul Scott from the Dublin Bat Group and Bat Conservation Ireland for a night of bat detection in the grounds of Grange Castle. These misunderstood mammals are extremely effective and valuable controllers of insect populations – with a single bat able to consume up to 5,000 insects each night!

Their calls cannot be heard by human ears, but with bat detectors the sky and waterways suddenly come alive with a multitude of clicks, rattles and whistles – and Paul will explain what the variations mean, how these wonderful animals contribute to the Irish Landscape and what you can do to help bats in your area. The main species you will hopefully hear are Common and Soprano Pipistrelles, Leisler’s bats and Daubenton’s bat.

Dress appropriately. Meeting place is the car park of Grange Castle Business Park, but I am not exactly sure where that is.

There is a limit of 40 people for this event and you have to register to attend. To register please send an email with ‘Register Grange Castle bat walk’ in the subject line to: dublinbatgroup@gmail.com

This event is weather dependant and may be cancelled if conditions are very wet or windy – in which case the registered attendees will be notified.

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.

You can even be a TV weather man/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!
Here is me giving it a go: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYQjHHfRdco …I know, I better not give up the day job. ;-)

The Science Gallery is open Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and on Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00. Admission is free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Temple Bar Night Market

18:00 – 22:00, Thu 24 Jul

Temple Bar, Dublin 2

After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.

It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.

This is odd

LASER attacks on pilots – Is Superman doing that?

During the week RTE reported that the “Irish Aviation Authority has confirmed that there were 158 laser “attacks” on pilots in Irish airspace in 2013″ and that legislation due to pass the final stage of the Oireachtas that “contains a measure making it an offence to dazzle an aircraft pilot with laser beams”.

I am dazzled about that story: I imagine a pilot sitting in a Cockpit where he has just a window in front of him. To shine a LASER into that window, I would think you need to be IN FRONT of the plane and on approx. the SAME level. Otherwise you can’t shine anything into a pilot’s eyes. Do you agree?

So it seems (even during the landing process) very unlikely that someone would be able to shine a directed and very much focused beam of; light into the cockpit of a big plane.

Smaller planes have lower windows so MAYBE you could – at the right angle – get the pilots eyes, but I would say this is with serious difficulty and I am not sure if hand-held LASER beamers really have the power to cover the required distance.

I guess that leaves only helicopters with their “all around” glass that really is affected by this. The article didn’t say this, but can it really be anything else than that?

If this is a helicopter flying from A to B traversing an area, I would imagine the speed to be too high to get the pilot’s eyes. SO what does that leave? Hovering helicopters at a relatively low height. I can’t imagine any other situation (unless Superman is shining the LASER!) And what type of helicopters do this hovering at low altitude? Police helicopters!

Now who has a problem with these helicopters? Because I never felt compelled to take my LASER beam out and shine it at a helicopter pilot.

Could it be that it is then just criminals or people that are at the fringes to criminality that do that? Now they are possibly the same people that already committed crimes or are prepared to commit them. They might even have an illegal weapon. Imagine somebody like that. Would that person be worried about a new law that makes it illegal to shine a LASER at a pilot?

Is that maybe similar to make it illegal for the 80 year old granny to bring a nail file on board of an airplane? Additional stupid rules that ONLY inconvenience the people that the rules are NOT intended for because the rest ignores it anyway?

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
