Hi all!

I don’t know if you feel the same, but I get the feeling that these Thursday/Fridays when I write the Dublin Event Guide are coming around faster and faster. I constantly seem to sit at my keyboard writing thousands of words to keep you informed about all free events. It is a lot of work every week, but there is a huge reward as well. I appreciate many of you sending me e-mails with your support and cheering on and if YOU have not done it, feel free to contact me, but don’t feel obliged! :-)

[ad]

But there is something I NEED your help with and I need as many people as possible to help with that!

You know what the Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events) is and what you get from it. You know that it is reliable, comprehensive, full of free events and that everybody can find interesting events in it and I am NOT asking you anything about this weekly newsletter/e-zine. Instead I need your help with this: Think about the Dublin Event Guide, but think outside the box! What other services would be beneficial for you? What other information either about Dublin and about events or about something completely different would be great to have? I am looking at the moment at possibilities how to improve and expand the services I am providing. This is not because I don’t have enough to do and need something else to keep me busy. No, that is definitely not the reason. But I am thinking about expanding my team of ONE in the medium term and this would give new opportunities. Please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with one or a few sentences describing what other services/information you could imagine to get from the makers of the Dublin Event Guide. All ideas will be considered and any suggestion will be appreciated. Just send your mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com Thanks a lot!

Thanks a lot also to the great people who saved the day last week and helped to assemble the money again for the Dublin Event Guide cost, you are all listed in the “Support the Dublin Event Guide” section and I appreciate your help. For everbody else: The new month is only a few days away. You know what that means and I already thank you profusely. ;-)

Every month I need to find EUR 170 somewhere to pay for the bill to send the newsletter in a reliable and non-spam-suspicious way. Your donations are the essential source of these EUR 170. So, please help if you can. If you can’t, that’s ok! In that case the Dublin Event Guide is my gift for you and if at any point in the future you can afford just 1 Euro per month, you might think of me then. Just EUR 1 per month does the job. That’s less than a bar of chocolate, less than half a cupcake and less than a third (!!) of a cup of coffee, Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm either for a donation once-off of EUR 12 or more if you can or choose the subscription option on that page to give EUR 12 per year without having to think about it. Thanks!!!

Tell all your friends and spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, we are on our way to 15,000 people in the Dublin Event Guide Community and there is strength in numbers! Your friends, families and colleagues can subscribe (for free) at www.dublineventguide.com and LIKE the Facebook group at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Click on LIKE yourself if you haven’t yet done so and get everyone to Subscribe.

And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from teh Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.

Today’s Feel Good Slot message is a poke again. The gentle reminder that you need to do something, that you don’t hide behind excuses, that you don’t delay, that you don’t drag your heels, but that you take action.

I am not sure were the quote is from, it could be from one of my teachers, but it doesn’t really matter. Read it, write it on a piece of paper and hang it over your desk or place of work or somewhere in your home:

The world needs you NOW, not when you are “perfect”!

What is holding you back??

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Majella M, Gareth N, Pat M, Conor O’H, Torlach OC, Belinda B and Paul B were the wonderful people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small donation and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down

The Dublin Event Guide this week contains again more than 180 events! And that doesn’t even include all the Garden parties that are taking place in the next two weeks in Aras an Uachtarain. Higgisn seems to invite half the country. Did you get your invitation? No? I am still waiting for his call too. Ah well, let’s stick to the free events. Mind you, I know that Higgins likes or probably rather liked his free events too. A few years ago I was standing behind him, his wife and daughter in a long long queue waiting to get into a free event. But that is a different story and I am digressing! Back to Joerg’s Picks:

This week I suggest you go to the Dublin Pride Parade on Saturday and on Sunday to the Big Bang Festival event and maybe the Dublin Flea Market. Or if sports is more your thing, you can watch the Rugby game on TV on Saturday morning and then go the American Football event in Tallaght on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. (When I checked earlier there were still some tickets available.) And while you are near St. Stephen’s Green, have a look at the wonderful art at the People’s Art Exhibition.

The Dublin Board Games event on Sunday afternoon and the Comedy and Poetry in Accents Coffee & Tea also look interesting.

On Monday the 10 Days in Dublin Festival and also the PhotoIreland Festival will take place and come with lots of events. On Tuesday I will try to go to the Counter Art Street Art event near Ha’Penny Bridge. On Thursday check out Phosthetics in the Exchange Dublin

Swords – Album Launch

Fri 05 July: 20:00

Tickets are EUR 10 and can be bought on www.entertainment.ie/tickets The band recently achieved “top played Irish artist” on Phantom FM with their first single All The Boys: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW-mNM7zZmQ and they were featured on Other Voices in June and will play at the Groove Festival, Knockanstockan and Indiependance this summer, so they are definitely one to watch

Promote your product or non-free event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 14,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? Minimal, often even completely free! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Choppy Waters in South Great George’s Street

Stability and Consistency in Shops and Restaurants is usually seen as a good sign in an area. It means that customers are happy with the service and the businesses are able to make a living from their business. Lots of changes an, closures and short-lived openings indicate the opposite: A difficult market with unreliability on both sides.

Sth Great George’s Street is anything but stable. One coffee shop, Grüb, has closed after only a few months in business (they opened in October 2012). And less than 100 m away two other coffee shops plan to open soon: Next to the hardware shop Decwells, a small independent coffee shop is looking for planning permission and on Dame Street between Centra and Temple Lane South, KC Peaches wants to open a restaurant or coffee shop in their quest for world domination (they are also looking for planning permission at the Baggot Street end of Stephen’s Green).

Other news on South Great George Street: Opus II will close tomorrow after having been in the streets forever. Opus II is a music instrument and music sheet shop that has two other (unaffected) shops in Cork and Galway and will move more business online.

And a little further up the street, Fogo, a new chipper and Luciano’s, a chipper that has been there forever, are both also closed for some while now.

Definitely choppy waters!

We have a new Mayor!

Ohh, you didn’t know? And you don’t care? Well I know why. The role of the “Lord” Mayor in Dublin is indeed a bit of a joke. He has some representational duties and apart from that just opens everything from shops to festivals to even envelopes. An unnecessary job!

Now, I have to say that the last two Mayors made a big effort and tried to achieve a few other things in their 12 months of being Mayor. The most recent one, Naoise O’Muiri worked hard on “Digital Dublin” and the previous one, Andrew Montague, was keeping himself busy with work on expanding and extending the Dublin Bikes scheme.

The new Mayor is Oisin Quinn and we will have to wait and see what he gets up to. His first statement on the Mayor’s Facebook Page on Tuesday 25 June doesn’t sound promising yet, but it is early days. So, keep an eye out for Oisin Quinn’s work, but don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard much from him come June 2014.

What is required is a Mayor that is elected by the people in Dublin and who will be in the role for at least 4 years. But most importantly, he has to have responsibility for all that is happening in the City. So, he has to be responsible for what the City Manager does. Because we can’t fire the City Manager if he messes up, but we can fire the Mayor. Will that ever happen? Not for a looooong time! But it would be the only fully democratic option!

Mobile Phone Roaming Charges dropping from Monday

Thanks to the EU and particularly to Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media, the mobile phone roaming charges in the EU are continually going down and will hopefully be abolished completely in 2015.
The next reduction comes into effect on Monday (01 July) and all newspapers have or will write about it – not all correctly though!

The news is good, but be careful! Make sure that you check with your service provider what the exact charges are. Especially when it comes to data, the new lower price is still mad high. From Monday outgoing calls will cost 24 cent per minute, text messages are 8 cent and data will be 45 cent per Mbyte.

Luckily some have bundles that are lower than the prescribed prices. A Vodafone 50 Mbyte bundle on certain contracts is just EUR 2 per day. But a 10 Mbyte bundle on Meteor is EUR 0.99, and 50 Mbyte would cost with Meteor EUR 19.99! However, Meteor claims not to charge any Roaming charges for phone calls (I didn’t check the claim!). Vodafone is more expensive than the EU charges for short calls (How do they get away with that??) because they charge a once-off fee. For longer calls the price per minute is below the EU prescribed cost.

BTW: Some media outlets still can’t deal properly with the Euro currency: BreakingNews.ie reports that the price for calls will be “0.24c” a minute. Is that 0.24 cent? That would be 0.0024 Euro? Clearly not! It should be “EUR 0.24”.

Opportunities

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Songs of the Soul – Music of Sri Chinmoy

19:30, Fri 28 Jun

Newman University Church , 87a St Stephens Green South, Dublin 2

I wrote about this event a number of months ago and ONLY heard good things about it. “Songs of the Soul” is a celebration of the music of Sri Chinmoy. Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007) was an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, artist, author and poet whose haunting melodies captivated audiences worldwide. Music was more than art, entertainment or even self-expression for him. It was language of the soul, a bridge from earth to heaven and he performed over 800 concerts to communicate his message. all of them free of charge, in the belief that the inner peace and happiness he sought to convey through his music was everyone’s birthright.

The concert in Dublin takes place on Friday and to reserve a ticket, call 085-1450880

First Thursday Dublin

18:00 – 20:00, Thu 04 Jul

Temple Bar

In the coming week, the next First Thursday SHOULD take place. However with the organising Temple Bar Cultural Trust having more or less imploded, it SEEMS as if this event has been completely abandoned. The Facebook Page suggests that maybe no June event took place and then it is looking bad for July as well. Let’s hope that someone (maybe the galleries themselves?) pick up the baton and continue the project. It once was this:

Inspired by First Thursdays carried out in London, First Thursdays Dublin is the name given to cultural spaces opening their doors after hours and offering an extra chance to see art, culture and events in a number of venues from 18:00-20:00 on the first Thursday of every month. In the meantime 47 galleries and venue are taking part and it is getting bigger and bigger. It is like a Culture Night for Galleries! ;-)

The workshop will explore the themes of the performance and provides the necessary codes to understand the process that a Butoh piece is involved with, this in order to facilitate and develop the understanding of the dance form. The themes related to this event are those of mud, fire water and springing of newness.”

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Madness of “Flying fire around the world?”

Did you read last week’s “This is Odd” section about the madness of flying the “eternal” JFK flame from Arlington to Ireland? Well, there is an update to that story (If you didn’t read the story last week, you can find it here: www.joergsteegmueller.com/2013/06/27/flying-fire-around-the-world/ ):

On Thurs 27 June, RTE reports that the JFK Flame in Wexford had to be re-lit after a technical glitch ( www.rte.ie/news/2013/0627/459259-jfk-wexford-flame-relit-after-technical-glitch/ ). The New Ross town manager Éamonn Hore assures us that the torch has been re-lit from one of the spare flame sources that was taken from Arlington Cemetery. Would he tell us if it was re-lit with a lighter? Since the JFK flame in Arlington has been re-lit a number of times and because fire doesn’t have an ancestry, it doesn’t matter in the slightest, but it is hilarious how they keep going on about the originality of the flame.
Hore also said that planned maintenance will see the flames extinguished on a monthly basis but re-lit always using flames from Arlington, so will they keep these other four flames in miner lamps (Davy Lamps) going for ever too? Mad!

Shut up you foreigner!

There are not tooooo many things that really annoy me and outrage me. But xenophobia / racism from people that claim they are anti-racists and people feeling superior over others just due to their nationality really get my blood boiling.

Mark Coleman, an economist and self-declared anti-racist, who works for the radio station Newstalk managed to get me so outraged that I even waste a perfectly good This is Odd! section on him.

UCD lecturer Julien Mercille criticised Coleman and others for hyping the property bubble. Coleman, who wrote a book called “The best is yet to come” which claims that Ireland will have fully recovered from any economic troubles by 2020, wrote a crazy long essay justifying and defending himself. The essay is badly written, much too long, and not in the slightest focused on the criticism and in it Coleman hits back at Mercille with entirely racist remarks, that are clearly intended to tell us foreigners to shut up and not to dare criticise Ireland unless we have learned enough to pass Coelman’s tests:
“As an esteemed guest of the nation, Mercille might want to spend some time learning more about his new home before running it down by attacking those who point out that future.”

I don’t care about the argument these two are having and without a doubt both are right and both are wrong, but clearly Coleman man doesn’t care about Mercille’s points that much either and instead criticises Mercille based on nationality, being foreign, and not living in Ireland long enough yet.

Racist bullying, Coleman! You should be ashamed!

If you have nothing better to do you can read Coleman’s drivel at www.broadsheet.ie/2013/06/27/i-was-right-i-am-right-and-the-best-is-yet-to-come/ Thanks to broadsheet.ie for letting us know about this story.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
