Did you ever want to give drawing a go? Or maybe you are a budding artist looking for like-minded people to draw with? The Creative Den in Rua Red runs free weekly drawing sessions on Wednesdays at 11:00.

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

The Festival of Inclusion in Dun Laoghaire (10-17 October) really includes just everything and doesn’t seem to focus on anything at all.

There are events for Refugees, Men, Women, History Lovers, Alcoholics, Older People, Childcarers, Africans, Cancer Sufferers, Blind people, Grandparents, Ga y people, Holistic medicine followers and you wonder if some of the groups that are involved in the Festival of Inclusion were even ever EXcluded, considering that the events suggest that we have to INclude them again.

There are plenty of events taking place and they are all listed on this website. It seems that all events are free.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

Maths Week Ireland takes place from 10-18 October, there are a good few events for pupils, but for adults the number of events is limited. I found just a handful and they are listed separately and individually in this Dublin Event Guide.

This is the last weekend of Scultpure in Context 2015!!

Sculpture in Context is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens, Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

On Saturday at 15:00 you will have the opportunity to join the artists for a guided tour through the exhibits.

The exhibition opened on 03 Sept and will run until Fri 16 October.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

The philosophy of educational expert Ruth Brady and Cogs The Brain Shop is ?“Play is our brain’s favourite way of learning”

Ruth is a primary school teacher and in the workshop she will discuss the importance of play in children’s development. The interactive play area will allow children and parents explore how motor skills, verbal skills, visual perception, memory and critical thinking can be enhanced through play.

The Irish Record Fair market is back in Thomas House. There will be lots of vinyl but also CDs and DVDs of all music genres. Admission is free.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). “Neptune’s Banquet” is the theme of this week’s Family Workshop in the National Gallery for 4-10 year olds.

Sunday is the Super Sports Sunday of 2015 with Ireland playing against France in the Rugby Woldchampionship. (The game is taking place in Cardiff and kick off is at 16:45.) and also Ireland playing against Poland in the soccer qualifier for the European Championship. (This game is taking place in Poland and kicks off at 19:45.)

If you are interested in Irish sport, your entertainment starts at 16:45 and won’t finish before 21:30. Nearly 5 hours of fun!

If you are not interested in sports, you have 5 hours of undisturbed quality time, that you can use productively to do something special! ;-) Don’t waste it!

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op.

It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month.

There is always a great atmosphere and I definitely recommend this monthly market.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

How do you setup and run a community garden? Hear about the lessons learned from two inspiring community garden projects: one in Dublin city centre and the other in rural Co. Clare.

You will start with a talking tour of the NCAD Community Garden on Thomas Street, hosted by Rian Coulter and Fabian Strunden. There you will harvest some of the produce from the garden and head over to the Fumbally Stables (a ten minute walk).

At the Stables, Matt Smith and Fergal Smith from Moy Hill Community Garden will talk from their perspective about what community is, how to succeed in keeping it going, and the lessons learned overcoming challenges in setting up Moy Hill.

Meanwhile a chef will work with what you have harvested from Thomas Street, along with some fresh veg brought up from Moy Hill, to create a dish for everyone to share.

To celebrate the Festival of Inclusion and the 50th anniversary of the Sound of Music, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is hosting the free Big Sing.

Choirs of all ages and ability in the county are invited to join in. Songs and music to be learned will be provided for prior to the event. Sheet music and lyric music will also be provided for. The event will be led by Grainne O’Grady, Music Director of Music Matters- www.musicmatters.ie and the choirs will be accompanied by Newtown Senior Tours Orchestra!

And you are invited to listen to songs from the shows Oliver, Mary Poppins, and Sound of Music on Sunday afternoon.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The talk “Hugh Lane and the Portrait Commission” with Logan Sisley (Hugh Lane Gallery) takes place. This talk is part of a free lecture series, for the month of October, on the theme of ‘Sir Hugh Lane (1875-1915): A Centenary Perspective’.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

The Sweeney’s Dixeland Jazzmen play their weekly gig on the ground floor in Sweeney’s. Admission is free.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known gospel choirs in Ireland will give you a chance to experience a mass with a difference. It is uplifting and inspiring and everybody is welcome independent from your level of religiousness or your relationship with the Catholic Church in other contexts.

“Unbound feet: the changing status of Chinese women, c. 1890-1950” is a public lecture by Dr Isabella Jackson as part of the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies Public Lecture Series 2015-16.

“For almost one thousand years, most Chinese women had their feet bound to achieve an artificial smallness that corresponded to an ideal of beauty, but restricted movement and caused immense pain and suffering. The eradication of this practice in the early twentieth century was a huge achievement and stands as a symbol of both female emancipation and the end of the old imperial order with the fall of the last dynasty in 1911.”

George Boole was born in Lincoln on 2nd November 1815. He was the first professor of mathematics at Queen’s College Cork, from 1849 until his death in that city in 1864.

His seminal work “An Investigation of the Laws of Thought” (1854) laid the theoretical foundations for all the digital machines and gadgets that are used everywhere today.

A new edition of Des MacHale’s biography of Boole “The Life and work of George Boole: A prelude to the digital age” has just been published. And Des McHale will speak about George Boole.

The public lecture “Racialising Migration” by Prof. Tukufu Zuberi takes place in the Food Science (Agriculture) Building, Ground Floor, FS01 and is organised by the UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice & Sociology.

“Here’s Looking at Euclid” is a public talk by Professor Robin Wilson for Maths Week Ireland 2015.

Little is known about Euclid, who wrote the most influential maths book of all time, but his “Elements” was the main geometry textbook for over two thousand years. In this talk Professor Wilson surveys the mathematical accomplishments of ancient Greece, from the Pythagoreans and Plato’s Academy to Euclid and Archimedes and their successors.

This is a free event, but booking is recommended here as there are limited seats.

Milk and Cookie Stories is a story telling event for for anyone who has a story to tell, or wants to hear a tale told well, in a relaxed, friendly environment – a place with tea, cookies and friends.

Dr Grainne Kirwan will give a talk for parents that will examine some of the dangers and risks that might exist online. These can include online predators; fraud and impersonation; websites which promote harmful behaviours; inappropriate disclosures; cyberstalking and internet gaming disorder (also known as online gaming addiction). Young people’s motives for engaging in, or putting themselves at risk of, these behaviours will be identified and proactive methods by which safer online behaviours can be promoted will be discussed.

Patricia Kennedy from Sticks & Stones Anti-bullying programme will deliver a short session covering areas such as
What is bullying? Cyberbullying, Cybersafety and how to protect your child’s online reputation? Who is likely to be involved in bullying? The characteristics of the child who bullies and how to support them in changing their behaviour? The effects and signs of bullying? Why children don’t tell? How to support the child who is being bullied and effect positive outcomes.

“Dublin’s trees and wild flowers: legends and folklore” is an illustrated talk by Niall Mac Coitir. Niall Mac Coitir will look at the stories and folk uses of some of Dublin’s native trees and flowers and how the life of ordinary people was bound up with them until modern times.

The talk will take place in the nature room at St. Enda’s Park, which is situated just off the courtyard behind the Pearse Museum.

John Feehan (retired Senior Lecturer in UCD’s School of Agriculture and Food Science and author of numerous books about peatlands, farming and wildflowers) will talk about “A Drama in Three Acts: the Past, Present and Future of the Bogs of Ireland”.

“We have reached a crucial turning point in the story of Ireland’s peatlands, as the great bogs from which Bord na Móna has harvested peat for the last seventy years become depleted of their fuel reserves. The talk will review the history of the peatlands: their slow development over millennia, their ecological significance and their impact on culture and landscape, their exploitation in recent centuries: and the prospects for the future of the bogs of Ireland.”

“The Big Housing Debate: The Way We Build Now” is a discussion organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation.

Housing – the where, what, and how we build – is a crucial concern in the future development of Dublin. More than an issue of quantity and units, the way we build now will determine the quality of our city and its living standards for generations to come. This year’s Open Debate brings together a range of speakers and disciplines to discuss the designs, policies and practices we must pursue to meet our housing needs.

The Red Line Book Festival takes place in venues across South Dublin County and is funded by South Dublin County Council. It is organised by South Dublin Libraries and Arts and consequently many of the events take plave in South County Dublin libraries.

There are free talks, readings, workshops, quizes, author meetings etc every day of the festival and a full list is available at www.redlinebookfestival.ie/programme-booking (Booking is required for the free events!) There are also many non free events, that you should check out.

Every Thursday until November a free tour of Grangegorman Military Cemetery on Blackhorse Avenue takes place. Meet inside the Cemetery Gates. Admission is free and everybody is welcome.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Eamon Ryan, leader of the Green Party, will talk about how Ireland can become a centre for climate solutions. Can we make Ireland a centre for climate solutions rather than a source of the problem and is our political system ready for the great leap towards a low carbon society?

Twice every year, the Central Library together with the Local Enterprise Office in Dublin City are running a series of six free Business Lectures for everybody who wants to start or grow a business. The lectures will cover subjects such as the characteristics needed to run and fund your business. Digital marketing strategies and writing business plans will also be included.

“Growing Lilies and Relatives in Scotland” is a lecture by Susan Brand, who has run an Alpine Nursery for thirty years in Perth, Scotland, raising and selling alpine plants.

Every Thursday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Every Thursday “Left Right & Centre” play a mix of blues & soul with a bit of rock&roll.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The Tommy Halferty Trio around Jazz guitarist Tommy Halferty will play a Jazz gig in JJ Smyth’s. Special guest is sax player Richie Buckley. Admission is free.

The Dublin Animation Film Festival is most likely back (“most likely” because the website doesn’t seem to be fully up-to-date) on Friday and Saturday 16+17 October. The film screenings and award ceremony are not free, but if I remember it right, then there were some free talks on the Friday in the IADT in previous years.

My suggestion: If you are interested in maiking Animated Films, check out the website below on Monday or Tuesday. If it hasn’t been updated, maybe this year’s festival is not taking place and if it is updated, you should find all relevant information.

The Music Library in the Central Library invites to a talk (Introduction to the Uilleann Pipes) and performance on the Uilleann Piping Day on Friday. Na Piobairí Uilleann will share the information and perform for you.

On Hamilton Day, the Royal Irish Academy will host a Public Conversation with a number of leading Irish researchers, followed by a and Prize Giving to ten of Ireland’s top Maths students.

The talk will examine networks and their applications from different perspectives. The speakers will cover mathematics, engineering and statistics.

The complete event will be moderated by Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin (School of Mathematics & Statistics, UCD) and speakers will include Professor Nial Friel from UCD and Professor Daniel Spielman from Yale University.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live. followed by DJs until late. Admission is free.

Leo O’Kelly & Garvan Gallagher will play a “psychedelic acoustic” gig. Admission is free.

The Pyro Blues Executive formed a year and half ago and plays mostly a version of New Orleans R’n’B with a classic rock twist, sandwiched with swing, Rock’n’Roll, Soul, Funk, Blues and Rap of all eras.
