Dublin Event Guide 433: Hard Working Class Heroes, ISLA Literature Festival, Oktoberfest, Startup Week

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate Positive Ageing Week from 01 October, admission to that exhibititon is free until 09 October. It doesn’t say if this is only for older people or for everyone, but you would hope that there is no age-based differentiation and everyone will be let in for free. ;-)

Last admission is at 15:45, which is surprisingly early, considering that the exhibition will be open until 17:00.

A 5 mile Fun Run will take place in Phoenix Park and as it usually the case with runs, especially with runs with a fundraising element, participation is not free.

But the great thing about this event is that there is also a “Simon Fun Run Festival” with numerous family activities, from kid’s races, kid’s crafts and games, spot prizes, goodie bags, live music, street performers and a food court. Admission to the festival part is free.

The area near the Papal Cross is where all is happening.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The Comic Books event in Wynn’s Hotel is a monthly event and the October edition is called Octobocon.

There will be comics fror collectors and anyone who loves pop culture. Vendors will sell retro video games, graphic novels & collectables and artists will showcase their work and sell prints.

Sculpture in Context is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens, Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

On Saturdays you will have the opportunity to join the artists for a guided tour through the exhibits at 15:00.

The exhibition opened on 03 Sept and will run until Fri 16 October.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

“Easter Week Remembered” is a series of talks previewing the forthcoming exhibition on the 1916 Rising. “Proclaiming a Republic: The 1916 Rising” is due to open at Collins Barracks in February 2016.

After a very successful Family Day in August, the Dun Laoghaire Library LexIcon is doing it again. There will be activities indoors and outdoors with a playzone in the Library Garden, Painting Workshops, Storytelling events, a Book Clinic, a Poem workshop.

The audience becomes “future historians” in this work from The Performance Corporation and Boca del Lupo as part of Dublin Theatre Festival’s In Development 2015:

Imagine the world, a century from now. What will we have learned and how will we look back? In a series of provocative and ironic interventions the audience are “future historians”, trying to make sense of today’s mistakes with the luxury of 100 years of hindsight. This work is the first step in a larger scale event to be staged in European and Canadian port cities.

There will be a series of events from 16:00-19:00 and you are invited to drop in and leave when it suits you. Meet at the CHQ entrance. Admission is free.

Author of “Down the Rabbit Hole” and “Quesadillas”, Mexican translator and novelist Juan Pablo Villalobos, will talk about his perception of memory and the influence of his country’s past on his writings.

Villalobos is known for his bright, colourful comedy and satire and hysterical humour flow through his novels, even as realism and everyday struggles remain at the core of everything he writes.

The Dublin Dodgeball Club is hosting a free open day on Saturday at the Trinity College Sports Centre.

Members of the Irish Dodgeball Association and the national Irish Dodgeball team will be there to teach everyone how to play.

Dodgeball is a fun Co-ed sport that is suitable for all levels of fitness and ability. There are some big tournaments coming up (Ulster in October and Galway in November), so this is the perfect time to get join the team.

On Saturday night there will be a night out and everybody is welcome, just come to the Open Day and you will get all information there.

The Ireland-Spain-LatinAmerica – ISLA Literary Festival is back the Instituto Cervantes and in some other venues. The theme this year is “Memory” and over three days nearly 20 authors from Spain, Latin America and Ireland will feature.

There will be talks, discussions, film screenings, writing workshops and literary strolls and most events are free.

The website below lists all events in the Instituto Cervantes. The large number of round table discussions, I won’t list separately in this Dublin Event Guide, so please check the programme on the website below for that. The roundtable discussions start at 12:30 and finish at 19:45 on Saturday. On Sunday they will start at 12:00 and finish at 14:15.

Two other events: A concert with Bolivian musician Victor Alarcon and an interview with Mexican translator and novelist Juan Pablo Villalobos are listed separately in this Dublin Event Guide.

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.

Paul Murray and Jason McElligott will discuss how an appreciation of Puritanism in general and polemical pamphlets from the seventeenth century in particular, lays bare some of the earliest and deepest roots of Bram Stoker’s fiction, “Dracula” especially. The event will be moderated by Professor Geoff Kent of the University of Auckland.

Paul Murray is the author of “From the Shadow of Dracula: A Life of Bram Stoker” (2004). Dr Jason McElligott is The Keeper of Marsh’s Library, Dublin.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

“Sunder” is a Work in Development performance in connection with the Dublin Theatre Festival.

“Over the past 100 years there have been punctuated moments of rebellion, incitement and terrorism shifting the optic in how the role of the Irish revolutionary is perceived. Historical accounts of the Easter Rising tend to describe the conflict almost solely in terms of male participation. “Sunder” will focus on ordinary women and the final hours of the rebellion.”

Ivy Day was mentioned by James Joyce and it commemorates the death of Charles Stewart Parnell in 1891. On Sunday, Ivy Day will take place at GLasnevin Cemetery. The event consists of a lecture by Dr PJ Mathews on Parnell, Synge and the Irish Revival and a wreath laying at Parnell’s grave and an oration by Dr Caitriona Crowe.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The next Pure Vintage Fair will take place this week and it is what it says on the tin. A market/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month.

There will be vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles, jewellery and many more vintage items. Sounds interesting and with 30 stalls, it is well worth a visit. There will also be food, hot drinks and a DJ.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The next concert will feature “The Clementi Sonatas III” with Fionnuala Moynihan, piano.

An Intercultural Tour in Irish Language with Community Ambassador Jack FitzGerald will take place in the Chester Beatty Library. Admission is free.

The Young Critics’ Panel returns to Dublin Theatre Festival. It is open to youth theatre members who are interested in watching theatre and discovering how and why theatre is made. After a nationwide selection process, the Young Critics learn how to critically discuss, analyse and review theatre. During this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival, the 16 participants will see a number of national and international productions.

You are invited to hear them discuss their findings in a public forum chaired by Dr. Karen Fricke.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Music Performance “The Arrows that Murder Sleep” expresses the poignancy and tragedy of classical Irish literature performed in song and music.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

Christ Church Cathedral is inviting to a series of lectures to mark the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.

The first lecture is by Dr Peter Crooks (Assistant Professor of Medieval History in Trinity College Dublin) and is entitled “An Introduction to Magna Carta”.

The Mexican film “Visa al Paraiso / Visa to Paradise” will be screened in the Instituto Cervantes in Spanish with English subtitles. It is a documentary in the form of a fiction film about Gilberto Bosques, the Mexican Consul in France between 1939 and 1942, who helped Spanish Republicans and people persecuted by fascism out of Europe.

The Water Book by Alok Jha (journalist, author and broadcaster, science correspondent at ITV News) will change the way you look at water.

The Book Launch of “The Passionate Woman” by Fran O’Brien will take place in the Writers’ Centre.

As with her eight books to date, all proceeds will be donated to LauraLynn Children’s Hospice, which was established in 2011 and now helps many families and children with life-limiting illnesses.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this initiative in 2011.

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:

The Hudson Bay Lowlands are the meeting place of three distinct eco-zones – arctic marine, arctic tundra, and boreal forest. Gary Mentanko, who received grants from the Merlin Trust and the Alpine Garden Society for his recent journey to the Canadian North, will discuss this stark, ever changing region.

“Extreme Threats” is a talk by Prof. Mike Tipton (University of Portsmouth, UK) in which he will discuss the extreme environmental threats our home, the Earth, has for us, their origins, consequences and ways of mitigating them.

We perceive Earth as a “blue planet”, an oasis amongst otherwise inhospitable and indifferent spheres. However, the idea of an Eden-like home that we have evolved to be in harmony with, that nurtures us as we care for it, is some way from the truth.

“On one side of the ecological coin we have the damage we do to our world by our very existence. On the other side we have the fact that 70% of our planet is covered in water, with an average ocean depth of 4,000 metres. Light penetrates only to about 80 metres into water, so most of our planet is in permanent darkness. The rest of it is in intermittent darkness with day and night. Only 15% of the surface of the Earth is not water, desert, ice or mountain. For humans, a sub-tropical, 1-G, low altitude, air-breathing homeothermic animal, most of our home represents a hostile place.”

The story shows the genesis of the career and the rise of Rachel, the most beloved actress of the most popular theater in Havana in 1920s.

The Kilmacurragh Estate in Wicklow, once the seat of the Acton family, is a satellite garden to the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin. The gardens, once the centrepiece of the 5,500 acre estate fell into serious decline following the death of two Acton brothers on the European battle fields. Seamus O’Brien recounts their story and the recent restoration of the famous gardens at Kilmacurragh.

Seamus O’Brien is Head Gardener at the National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh, Co. Wicklow. He is Ireland’s leading authority on the flora of China and has travelled widely across North America, Chile, China, the Himalayas, Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand to study the flora of those regions.

The talk “Harry Clarke’s Illustrations for Ireland’s Memorial Records: Commemorating Irish soldiers who died in WWI” with Marguerite Helmers is a talk in the Festival of History series of talks.

Marguerite Helmers is Rosebush Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She specialises in word and image relationships, particularly relating to 20th century Ireland and England. She wrote the book “Harry Clarke’s War: Ireland’s Memorial Records, 1914-1918”.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

“Salon Nights at the Studio is a monthly series for writers and readers, focused on the world of Ireland’s ‘little magazines’.

The Pale Project is an initiative of Selina Guinness, dlr County Council writer-in-residence. Selina will be your host for the night.

The editors of three very different publications: The Dublin Review, gorse and The Stinging Fly will each present their view of the literary scene, and introduce two contributing writers to read from their work. The panel will then discuss what kind of writing makes them tick. Salon Nights offer a convivial mix of interview, banter, short readings and discussion, providing a taste of the freshest literary talents, and a rare insight into how writers are formed. Audience and participants are invited to continue the salon at a local venue after the event.”

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

Bad Boy Jake are every Wednesday in the Gypsy Rose Rock & Blues Bar playing their rock, blues and American.

Every two weeks, Comedy Kitchen, a stand-up comedy event comes to Crowbar (in the same building as the Button Factory) in Temple Bar. There will be 6 stand-up comedians performing. Check it out!

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate Positive Ageing Week from 01 October, admission to that exhibititon is free until 09 October. It doesn’t say if this is only for older people or for everyone, but you would hope that there is no age-based differentiation and everyone will be let in for free. ;-)

Last admission is at 15:45, which is surprisingly early, considering that the exhibition will be open until 17:00.

Twice every year, the Central Library together with the Local Enterprise Office in Dublin City are running a series of six free Business Lectures for everybody who wants to start or grow a business. A talk about “The Martello Towers” will take place in the Alliance Francaise’s Cafe Historique on Thursday.

The talk will outline the defences of Killiney Bay against a French invasion (1793-1815) and the subsequent history and recent restoration of one of the Martello Towers.

The Royal Irish Academy of Music runs a whole range of events to promote classical music and the free events will be inlcuded in the Dublin Event Guide.

On Friday a Vocal Masterclass with Brenda Hurley will take place. Brenda Hurley is the Director of the International Opera Studio, Zurich and she is regarded as one of today’s leading vocal coaches.

The public lecture “What turns cities into financial centres?” by Professor Dariusz Wójcik (University of Oxford) is part of the “Distinguished International Lecturers in Geography’ Series” organised by the Department of Geography, School of Natural Sciences, TCD.

Professor Wójcik is a Professor of Economic Geography at the School of Geography and the Environment, Oxford University, and Fellow of St Peters College Oxford. His research focuses on finance, globalisation, and urban and regional development.

It will take place in Lecture Theatre M4 in the Museum Building. Admission is free, but registration is required via Dr Martin Sokol at sokolm@tcd.ie.

British photographer Chloe Dewe Mathews, Paul Bonaventura (independent producer) and Niall Bergin (Manager, Kilmainham Gaol) discuss “Shot at Dawn”, a project that focuses on the sites at which British, French and Belgian troops were executed for cowardice and desertion between 1914 and 1918, commissioned by the Ruskin School of Art at the University of Oxford as part of 14–18 NOW, WW1 Centenary Art Commissions. This discussion is moderated by Sarah Glennie (Director, IMMA) and marks the first day Shot at Dawn opens at IMMA.

Dark Secrets is a night of revelations and revelry as part of the current SECRET exhibitions in the Science Gallery. There will be live music and DJs curated by Hidden Agenda and on top of that special guests, comedy, dance, short talks, games, demos, cocktails and more will be revealed.

MMOTHS will be hypnotising the gallery with a DJ set, in a lineup that will also include Dublin duo CLU, whose live show includes a once-off live AV experience especially for the night, and Joni, whose unique sound straddles the divide between electronic beats and organic instruments.
