Hi all!

I think I broke a new record last week. Not a positive one, though! Apologies for it! It was the latest ever Dublin Event Guide and I know exactly what went wrong! Apart from a few little technical hiccups, the problem was that I did go to the launch of the Dublin Theatre Festival on Thursday night and got home a little late (No alcohol involved! :-) ). I love going to events and while I already limit my Thursday night activities anyway, it seemingly is now a death sentence for ALL going out on a Thursday. Pity, but I HAVE to improve on the delivery time so that you benefit more from the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”.

This week the main event is Open House 2011. I think it is a brilliant event. It gives you access to buildings that otherwise you would never see and I suggest that even if you think this is not “your cup of tea”, you try out one building. :-) In previous years I was on top of Liberty Hall, did tour in Busaras and found out fascinating facts about this building and was able to get into the Department of Foreign Affairs. Unique opportunities!!! Check the website and have a look at one or more of these buildings that surround us, even if you are not an architecture expert. No architecture expertise is required to do or understand any of the tours!

I will spend some time on Saturday and on Sunday at Open House. I haven’t made a plan yet, but will hopefully get a chance later. In addition I will go to the Oktoberfest this weekend, I still didn’t make it and have to go at least once. And on Sunday evening I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass in Gardiner Street Church. If you were never there, give it a go at some stage. You can easily meet me as well if you want (I do the sound engineering for the choir every week.) Great singing, friendly atmosphere and you don’t have to be a regular church goer at all to come to this mass.

During the week there are lots of interesting little events, but no big event that I HAVE to mention here. I will spend most of this week to prepare the Event Guide because next Thursday I will leave Ireland again for a few days.

The event will be hosted by Tony Hawks who will be answering audience questions following the screening. The film is based on the true life adventures of Tony Hawks and his absurd quest to hitch round the circumference of Ireland within a month… with a fridge. The book became a top 10 Sunday Times bestseller in 1998 and has now sold well over 800,000 copies worldwide.

SHEBEEN CHIC IN TROUBLE
It seems that Shebeen Chic in South Great Georges Street is in serious trouble. The landlord got an eviction notice for 10 Oct and unless a solution can be found, it is likely that Shebeen Chic will be gone. The bar staff currently threaten to do a lock-in to avoid eviction, but that might only delay the eviction a little. The whole situation seems to have arisen after the landlord was unhappy with the rent payments, but the tenant of the pub claims that he did pay. A little unclear what happened, but I guess if a judge issued an evicition notice there is definitely SOME sort of issue with outstanding payments. If the pub is closed, it will be sad day for free events, because Shebeen Chic hosted many regular and one-off music events and hosts the regular Comedy Crunch. TESCO FINED FOR INCORRECT PRICING
Tesco was fined EUR 600 today because the company charged more for products at the till than the price indicated on the display. I think it is great news that controls take place and consequences arise from it. Tesco won’t have a big problem paying the EUR 600, but it sends a signal. Now we need the National Consumer Agency to check the many shops that do not display prices at all on some goods. PC World in Carrickmines was in the past one of the worst in that regard. I don’t know if it has changed because when I realised it, I decided not to go there anymore.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME – PEARSE MUSEUM, RATHFARNHAM
08 Oct – 05 Dec: Pearse Museum, St. Enda’s Park, Grange Road, Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin. – “Home, Home away from Home” is a cross cultural art project between Dublin, Ireland and Chapecó, Brazil. The exhibition will include drawings, paintings, photographs and text. Two individuals, one an artist and university professor Márcia Moreno from Chapecó, Brazil and James Moore a Dublin based artist respond to ideas of “Home”, both personal and otherwise and to the experiences of people who create a home in a new country or a new environment. The exhibition will include drawings, paintings, photographs and text. The first part of the exhibition will take place in Chapecó, Brazil in September before travelling to Ireland in October.

The Exhibition & Book Launch of “Wild Garden – Landscape Photography from County Wicklow” by Peter Gordon will take place in the Centre for Creative Practices. The launch will be on 06 Oct from 19:00-21:00.
‘Wild Garden’ is a collection of fine art landscape photography created by Peter in Ireland’s County Wicklow. The work takes the viewer through a range of moods, sometimes uplifting, sometimes melancholic, simply reflecting the atmosphere of the landscape and the light that describes its beauty at a given moment. Moving through the seasons Peter sought out specific combinations of light and colour in an attempt to show the transition of change in the county. Sometimes sleeping out in -14 degrees the creation of the image always took precedence.

INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC – UCD
The UCD International Office and UCD School of Music invite you to the Global Lounge at 14:00 on Fri 07 October for an hour-long concert of Indian classical music. Sougata Roy Choudhury is a distinguished young sarod player from Kolkata who is part of the new generation of Indian classical musicians. The sarod is a 25-stringed fretless instrument and is one of the primary solo instruments of North Indian music. Sougata will be accompanied by Ciro Montanari (an Italian drummer) on the tabla, or paired drums. Indian classical music is based on semi-improvised performances of ragas, or modes, that highlight both profound reflection on the meaning of the musical materials and the virtuosic capabilities of the instrumentalists. Open House is a great event where you can visit buildings that are normally not easily accessible and in nearly all cases architects that often were directly or indirectly involved in building or renovating the building will provide a guided tour. The event is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation, but is very much suited for everyone who is interested in buildings that surround us. There is an extensive programme and you will find a booklet in some venues in town (e.g. Tourist Office) or you can check it out online at www.openhousedublin.com/ Click on the categories Residential, Cultural / Educational, Public / Community and Office / Commercial. Most buildings are available for visits on Saturday OR Sunday, but there are some that can only be visited on Friday. So make sure you check it out before the weekend!
Something that did NOT impress me:
Earlier this year the Architecture Foundation used the crowd funding website fundit.ie to get money to print the great brochures. They got the needed money and decided to print the brochures again, but I find it odd that they charge EUR 2 to anyone who wants to download the programme as a PDF. You would think that they want to spread the word and want to let as many people as possible to have the PDF programme.

DUBLIN SIMON FUN RUN – PHOENIX PARK

This is not a free event for participants, but you could watch the event if you are interested and enjoy the fun/entertainment. The Dublin Simon Fun Run is the longest running charity event in Phoenix Park. It is a fun day out and an important fundraiser for the Dublin Simon Community. You have to buy a wristband after 22:00 to be allowed to purchase beer. The wristband is EUR 6 and you get EUR 5 in food for it – and EUR 1 goes to a charity. Allegedly this is an alcohol license stipulation (you have to eat a “substantial meal” to be allowed to remain on site after 22:00).

Set against the backdrop of Georgian Dublin, this talk will trace the transformation of the apothecaries from being regarded as mere tradesmen at the start of the century to their emergence as a profession by the end of the eighteenth century. The Dublin apothecaries visited, treated and dispensed to the sick and were in essence the precursors of the modern General Practitioners. While still practicing as an Ophthalmologist, Dr Susan Mullaney completed an MA in the History of Medicine at the Wellcome Centre in London. The lecture “African Violets in Southeast Asia” by Dr David Middleton will take place on Thursday. David Middleton is an expert on the flora of South-East Asia and is currently a research taxonomist at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. He spent some years at Trinity College working on the Flora of Thailand and will talk about the on-going importance of collecting and understanding tropical plants today. “Pinktober” is a series of events in October in the Hard Rock Café that has the purpose to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society. QUANTUM THEORY OF KNOTS – LECTURE

“Quantum Theory of Knots” is the title of the “Edward Witten – Hamilton Lecture 2011” of the Royal Irish Academy. “Geometry in the three dimensions of physical space and the four dimensions of spacetime has many unique features – many of them linked to Hamilton’s quaternions. One facet of this is the development in the last century of a rich mathematical theory of knots. HOBBIT ON A BOX – MAYBE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT?
One of the Presidential Candidates stands out from the rest, not because he is particularly tall, but because he is particularly small. Michael D Higgins is regularly compared with a Hobbit (you might remember Hobbits from Lord of the Rings) because he is a LOT smaller than the rest. I don’t think being small should be a serious problem, but if someone is soo uncomfortable with his size that he needs serious modifications, it could be a problem. At the TV3 debate of the candidates for the Irish presidency, many were surprised that Michael D Higgins appeared a lot taller than normally and it turned out in the end, that he was standing on a box/step. This is odd!
