Hi all!

I hope you had a great week and are now, when you get this Dublin Event Guide, looking forward to your weekend. When you think about it, it is an odd life we live. Many of us live just for the weekend and the holidays and the weekdays are just the necessary evil that takes place between one weekend and the next. If your week is filled with nothing else but work, then I can fully understand that. But maybe there are some other things you could do!? There are soooo many events taking place – even during the week – that you might want to sprinkle some other experiences into the monotony of your work week.

The first step is made! You found the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, now make the second step if you are one of the people that could do with a bit more excitement during the week. Do at least ONE thing in every week that you had never considered before! It’s a lot of fun and it widens your horizon and introduces you to new experiences that could change your life.

(If you doubt that “change your life” comment: EVERY experience could change your life if it feels right for you! Someone told me about two years ago that her friend found out about a specific event in this Dublin Event Guide. It was a 2 hour talk, an introduction to a certain spiritual (not religious) approach to life. And it completely changed her friend’s life. She left her job, found a new passion and is much happier than she ever was before since she follows that new spiritual path. All that through just finding out about an event and taking the initiative to try something new.)

Last two week I mentioned that I am looking for a small group of passionate Event Guide readers and supporters, who want to support me with their advise and opinion and I will repeat this call once more, just in case some of you haven’t seen it before. – The group has to be small and to be part of it, you have to be very interested and passionate about the Event Guide. I haven’t decided if it will be 3 or 5 or 10 people, but I don’t expect a bigger panel than 10. If you want to be on that panel, please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject ADVISOR. I would appreciate if you could give me an idea why you are the one I should select as an advisor. Maybe you just LOVE the Event Guide, or it is your background that makes you suitable or maybe you always wanted to help. Just tell me what drives you. BTW: You won’t have to do any work yourself (unless you want to), but you have to share your opinion with me regarding the further development of the Event Guide.

After a while somebody else joins him and then all goes very fast and in the end it is a big dance movement that was created. This week I will maybe go to the Mamuska & Georgian Chanting event in the Backloft tonight. On Saturday I plan to go to the Festival Under the Clock in Rathmines if I find the time.

On Sunday the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival and the Five Lamps Arts Festival are interesting options. On Tuesday the Buen Camino Book Launch and the Latin American Film Festival are worth a look and on Wednesday the Alexander the Great lecture sounds good. Next Friday is the National Music Day, so try to go to some events, they are all free!

RACOON – THE MATCHBOX THEATRE – TICKET COMPETITION
The Matchbox Theatre (13 South Great Georges Street, downstairs at Le Cafe Des Irlandais) is a brand new performance space in the City Centre and one of the first plays in it will be “Racoon” from 05-17 April (every day apart from Mondays). Word is spreading fast about the venue and the play and I hope you will help with that as well, because the team involved with the play has been super generous and will give away 2 free tickets for EACH performance of Racoon at The Matchbox Theatre from 05 April – 17 April. Now she must decide if she should become the woman he lost or go on forever alone.

DRINKING FROM THE WELL – CONTEMPORARY DANCE
“Drinking from the Well” is a contemporary Dance Performance, choreographed by Deirdre Murphy, featuring Lisa McLoughlin, Deirdre Murphy, and Rebecca Reilly. It will take place at the The Back Loft, Le Catedral Studios, St. Augustine Street, Dublin 8 from 06-09 April with shows on Wed-Sat at 20:00 and a matinee on Sat at 14:00. A post show discussion will be held on Thursday 07 Apr. “Drinking from the Well” is about “pregnancy and birthing and it explores this theme through the use of challenging contemporary choreography, with a touch of acrobatics and a harmonic vocal soundscape created entirely by the performers. A NIGHT OF COMEDY – TEACHER’S CLUB
What a coincidence! Not only the dance performance at the Back Loft, but another ticket competition with a pregnancy theme: The La Touche Players will perform “A night of comedy” with two hilarious one act plays: ‘Womberang’ by Sue Townsend and ‘Overuled’ by George Bernard Shaw will be performed from Tues 05 – Sat 09 Apr at the Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1. The performance will start at 20:00.
‘Womberang’ is a comedy set in the waiting room of a gynaecology clinic, where an assortment of patients wait for their appointments. As they sit, they talk about everything from men to the menopause.
‘Overruled’ is a comic look at the concept of adul tery, as two couples flirt with ideas of infatuations and fidelity. The play was a resounding failure in 1912, the audience shocked by its immorality.

BOUNCERS – COMEDY – TIVOLI THEATRE
The Tivoli Theatre will host the hilarious comedy “Bouncers” with performances from Tues 29 Mar – Sat 09 Apr at 19:30 every evening. The play takes you back to 80s Ireland and it is a highly decorated play having won 5 Joseph Jefferson Awards in Chicago, 7 Los Angeles Drama Critic Awards and has also been nominated for the Laurence Olivier Comedy of the Year Award. The four actors in the play portray over twenty different characters from the disco scene set against the tatty glitzy glamour, flashing lights and pulsating beat of a Dublin night club. LIGHTHOUSE CINEMA (SMITHFIELD) GOT ANOTHER CHANCE
The judge decided to give the Lighthouse Cinema a few more days, but oddly the landlord didn’t want that, but wanted to close the Lighthouse Cinema company. So, it seems that he wants them out no matter what and will do whatever he can to achieve that. I find that a very strange situation, but without a doubt there is SOME ulterior motive there. NATIONAL LOTTERY ANNOUNCE AS DUBLIN MARATHON SPONSOR
The National Lottery was announced as the new title sponsor of the Dublin Marathon and it was also announced that the 2011 National Lottery Dublin Marathon will be broadcast live on RTÉ Two and streamed worldwide on RTÉ.ie, with an additional highlights package broadcast later that week.
Wait for next year! Going by previous National Lottery performance, from next year the “Dublin” Marathon will take place in Wexford, Waterford, Limerick etc. At least that’s what the National Lottery has done to our beloved St. Patrick’s Day Skyfest (Fireworks). As soon as they started sponsoring the Skyfest was moved away from Dublin! (By the way, I am saying this with a tongue in cheek, BUT I would not be surprised if the National Lottery was really trying something like this.)
By the way, I plan to take part in the Dublin Marathon this year. The plan is that I will NOT run, but will WALK the full distance. The walking will be very fast, though! GLUAISEACHT SKILL SHARE WEEKEND
From 01-03 April the Gluaiseacht Skill Share Weekend will take place. It is a weekend of workshops and talks to be held in Seomra Spraoi, Dublin 1 (Directions: seomraspraoi.org/copy_of_contact-us) and the purpose of the weekend is to get people from various backgrounds interested in activism and to meet up, get to know each other and learn from activists and others. DUBLIN BAY PRAWN FESTIVAL – HOWTH
The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival takes place this weekend in Howth. From Fri 01 – Sun 03 Apr, Howth will be buzzing with events. The Festival will feature a food village packed with food stalls and tasting sessions with everything from top quality seafood to freshly sourced local foods from some of the region’s finest restaurants and artisans. Other food events include cookery demonstrations, wine-tasting events and prawn shelling competitions. During the day there will be street entertainment and a programme of walks, talks and seaside antics. In the evenings there will be a Fireworks on the Harbour and in-house musical entertainment in Howth’s Pubs.

FESTIVAL UNDER THE CLOCK – RATHMINES
Sat 02 Apr: 11:00-23:00 – Rathmines Town Hall, Lower Rathmines Road, Rathmines, Dublin 6. The “Festival Under The Clock” is a 1-day free family festival organised by the students of the Corporate Project Management Course of Rathmines College. It is a brilliant way of getting the students of that course to put in practice what they have learned and they are doing a great job. The festival has been steadily growing in size each year and has a long list of Irish celebrities who have performed in the past.
This year singer/songwriter John Spillane, comedian Jarlath Regan, Irish musician Liam O’Maonlai and classical musician Cora Venus Lunny are in the line-up and in addition there is street entertainment (dancers, magician, face painters etc) and screenings of a selection of movies. All events are free and fill up quickly so be sure to get there early. FIVE LAMPS ARTS FESTIVAL
The Five Lamps Arts Festival, an initiative of Marino College of Further Education, will take place from 31st March 2011. This festival, which is in its fourth year, is run by volunteers who want to promote the arts in this area of the city. The festival will run until 09 April and most music and community events are free (not the theatre events!). In an amazing development, the website www.fivelampsarts.ie/ that was working last week (and just needed some improvements), is now down and got disconnected probably because it wasn’t renewed in time. To loose the website in the middle of a festival is bad form!

LATIN AMERICA WEEK 2011
The Latin America Week 2011 will take place from 02-09 April and this year’s festival has the theme “Taste of Freedom: Growing Alternatives to the Food Crisis”. The Latin America Week is an annual programme of educational, cultural and campaigning events on issues relating to cultural, social, political, civil and economic rights in Latin America. An Opening Ceremony, a photo exhibition, a conference and a DJ night out are part of the week. In addition the Latin American Film Festival will take place (see Tuesday for details). IRISH LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL – IRISH AID CENTRE

The 12th Irish Latin American Film Festival, once again aligned with Latin America Week 2011, takes place in Dublin. Admission to all screenings is free at this small screening space and attendees are requested to be seated on time for each screening.
The bi-lingual Film Festival is organised in Irish with English as back-up and features short films and documentaries. This year three indigenous languages of The Americas – Guaraní (Karoi Norte), Quechua (Ukuku) and Mapuche (La Voz Mapuche) feature.
The screenings will include introductions and discussions afterwards lead by speakers familiar with the subjects. Several of the directors will also be in attendance to talk about their work. Friday 08 Apr is the National Music Day and throughout the whole day the “love:live music” Festival will take place. Hundreds of free live music events will place across all genres/types of music in towns and villages all over the country. love:live music is a celebration of all forms of music in Ireland through free nationwide music events and aims to promote access to live music for all regardless of location or circumstance and to encourage active participation in music events. The Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Friday at the Irish Writers’ Centre. It is a free creative writing session that is organised and led by the Centre’s voluntary arts administrators. The hour includes writing exercises and prompts to get ideas flowing. LOVE:LIVE MUSIC – CONTEMPORARY MUSIC CENTRE
The Contemporary Music Centre celebrates love:live music with live performance, audio-visual screenings, an outdoor Sound Gallery and an illustrated talk. All events are free and all take place at the Centre’s premises in Fishamble Street.
The Centre’s celebrations will begin on the eve of love:live music with a talk by Irish composer Benjamin Dwyer on this major work Crow (07 Apr: 18:00-19:00) and the celebrations on 08 April will culminate with the highlight of a screening of the full-length film version of Scenes from Crow (08 Apr: 18:00-19:00). Crow is written for large amplified ensemble, tape and video with visuals by the leading Irish photographer/video artist, David Farrell.
The Centre’s day will also feature a specially compiled jukebox from the Centre’s call for submissions for love:live music in its outdoor Sound Gallery “Off the Rails”. This outdoor jukebox will kick-start love:live music day by playing the specially commissioned tune at noon and continue with the jukebox until 13:00.
A screening of a film by Jennifer Walshes with a title that would firmly land this mail in all Spam Filters and can therefore not be repeated will take place in the Centre’s library at 13:15 on 08 Apr.
A Live performance will take place from 17:00 and will feature Irish Composer Michael Holohan and musician Breifne Holohan performing on keyboards and electric guitar.

RUSSIAN COSMONAUT TALK – HELIX
The Russian Cosmonaut Mikhail Korniyenko, who spent 6 months on board the International Space Station from April to September 2010 as part of the Expedition 23/24 crew, will be in Dublin for a lecture organised by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) in conjunction with DCU. IDEAL HOME EXHIBITION – RDS (BALLSBRIDGE)
The Ideal Home Exhibition takes place twice a year and the spring exhibition will take place in the RDS from 15-17 April. The exhibition is targeting “home owners and home lovers”, so you don’t have to have your own home to find something interesting there, but the exhibitors are definitely more interesting to people that can make alterations and improvements in their own home than to people renting an apartment. The organisers describe “We have everything you need for your home improvements, extensions, home energy, interior design, room make-overs, gardens, patios, lifestyle and so much more.” The attractive aspect about the show is that you can get free tickets for admission on Friday or Saturday. COMPULSORY DRIVING LESSON NONSENSE
From 04 April first-time licence-holders will have to take 12 hours of lessons. When I read this initially it all made sense to me. It sounded as if gradually a driving school system was introduced as it is in place in many other countries. Where such a system is in place you have to take a prescribed minimum number of lessons and would usually only go to a driving test once your instructor is of the opinion that you are good enough, This system works very well in Germany, for example, where you are NOT allowed to drive a car before you have your full licence unless it is in a driving instructor’s car.
But when I looked at the details, it turns out that the Irish system is quite odd: You are still allowed to drive in Ireland without any formal training and just after passing a theoretical test. You have to have an experienced driver in the car with you, but let’s face it, even if you bring your mother or father in the car with you, it won’t enable you to drive and their ability to teach you properly is questionable. From 04 April, anyone applying for their first driving licence must complete 12 hours of lessons with an approved driving instructor before they can sit a driving test. I can still se the sense in this, but the next requirement turns the whole thing into a farce: “The Road Safety Authority recommends that the 12 hour-long lessons take place over a period of six months and that at least two weeks are left between each lesson to allow for practice.” This is just ridiculous! It’s like saying to pupils that they will have to learn how to add or to multiply over a period of a number of months where a teacher will explain it only every two weeks to them, so that the students have time to practice! Absolutely crazy. When I went to driving school in Germany I had about 20 lessons and all that was completed in less than 2 months and in between I was NOT allowed to drive because there is no concept of “provisional licences” in Germany.
Why should someone in Ireland not be allowed to go for an intensive course? You are not allowed to drive on your own anyway, so why should I not be allowed to take lots of driving lessons and then quickly go for the driving test? Would it not make more sense to let someone who, for example, has no family member to come with them for a drive or someone who needs a licence as fast as possible for example for their job to expedite the process? The Road Safety Authority (RSA) clearly has no sense!
