Hi all!

Every now and then I experience events that just blow me away and recently there were a few of them. Some of you might have detected that my interests are VERY diverse and so the great events are diverse as well: Last week I went to the “Festival Under the Clock” in Rathmines, a small festival organised by the students of Rathmines College as a project in their course. They had a brand new a-capella quartet there, which was outstanding. They are called The Toby Reiser Quartet (www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADEUpcXYUlw) and will be in the Globe this Wednesday. Check the Wednesday section!
After the Toby Reiser Quartet, Irish Folk singer/songwriter John Spillane (www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYFJtCsxYvs) performed and it was the most witty and enjoyable performance of a singer/songwriter I had heard in a long time.
On Tuesday I was so lucky to see “Racoon” the one-woman-one-act play in the Matchbox Theatre (check the Competition section for details) and it is such a strong story, so well acted and directed, that you would be silly to miss it! Very touching and at the same time funny.
I guess while I am at it, I should mention two other events, so that you have more things to look out for: The only other play that totally blew me away was Shadaan Felfeli’s one man show and I hope he will perform it again at some stage. And then there was Tony Humphries, a clinical psychologist who I had the pleasure to listen to a few weeks back.

[ad]

Why I do I mention all these events. Well, they were all free events or at least there were ticket competitions in the Dublin Event Guide available AND they were all events I would definitely be prepared to pay for.

Do you have a list of events, encounters, performances that moved you in recent weeks? If not, go to more events! ;-) There is amazing talent out there!!

I love music and it is great to see if someone is talented AND enjoys it and for today’s Feel Good Slot I came across a video of the 8-year old Nicolas Merritt. He plays the drums to “A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” by Face To Face and is just amazing!

NATIONAL ACHIEVERS CONGRESS – LONDON
The National Achievers Congress in London from 02-04 July will bring three of the most inspiring achievers and speakers together on one stage. Anthony Robbins, Richard Branson and Alan Sugar will speak at this 3-day congress. The standard ticket will be GBP 297+VAT soon, but a few more tickets are available for GBP 197+VAT. You can book at successr.infusionsoft.com/go/72/ranger2285/ and you will find out more information there as well.
I have booked my ticket for this event in July. Richard Branson, Anthony Robbins AND Alan Sugar at one event is worth the money, I think.

This week Meline Z. donated money to the Event Guide so that you all will continue to get it every week. Thanks! I need YOUR help as well! For the last two months the cost are NOT covered by the donations, so if you have never donated PLEASE consider it. If you have donated a few years back, see if you can help again. Without your help, the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” will not be there forever.

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my bank, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week I will try to go to some Love:Live Music event later on, but am a little late getting started with my planning. I hope you were better.

On Saturday, the Day Time Sun Watch and the Uilleann Pipe performance in the Culture Box sound interesting. On Sunday, I would love to go to the Sunflower planting – but it is only for children! ;-) During the day the Sushi Noon charity event sounds worthwhile and in the evening I will be in Gardiner Street Church for the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass.

On Tuesday I hope to catch the “Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day 2011” event and in the evening the Yuri Gagarin talk interests me. On Wednesday is Haendel’s Day with great performances in Temple Bar and after that join me in The Globe for the Toby Reiser Quartet, who will perform in the Song Room. On Thursday the event in the Helix with another Cosmonaut (a lot of space and planets related events this week!) sound really interesting. Unfortunately I will most likely miss it because I will instead write the next Event Guide for you! :-)

______Competition______________

RACOON – THE MATCHBOX THEATRE – TICKET COMPETITION
The Matchbox Theatre (13 South Great Georges Street, downstairs at Le Cafe Des Irlandais) is a brand new performance space in the City Centre and one of the first plays in it will be “Racoon” from 05-17 April (every day apart from Mondays). I had the pleasure to see the play in the launch night and it is brilliant. I am not someone easily impressed by plays and before “Racoon” only one other play managed it. So, I can definitely recommend it! The great thing is that you can still win tickets! The team is giving away 2 free tickets to a Dublin Event Guide Reader for EACH performance of Racoon at The Matchbox Theatre from 05 April – 17 April. Wow! The winner of the two tickets will be the first person to email stephanie.courtney6456@gmail.com with the subject line “Free Racoon Tickets from the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events” on each day of the performance (Make sure that you include your name and mobile phone number in the mail.) Regular tickets are EUR 10 and include even a free glass of lager. Regular reservations can be made at thematchboxtheatre@gmail.com.
Racoon is a one woman, one act play written by Tom Hall, featuring Cate MacGabhann. It is a play about a woman named Saoirse who never knew she needed to be found, until Seamus came into her life. As she examines him and the events of their relationship, her expectations collide with a secret he knows, leading to a shocking revelation. Now she must decide if she should become the woman he lost or go on forever alone. A very strong story, a hugely talented actress and a great director! Don’t miss out!

CHARACTERS IN CONVERSATION – HORSE ENTHUSIASTS
The UCD Alumni Relations ‘Characters in Conversation’ is a series of talks and the next one is on 19 April from 18:30-20:30. It will take place in the Astra Hall, UCD Student Centre, Belfield, Dublin 4 and has a horse theme: The legendary racehorse trainer Dermot Weld (MVB 1970) will return to his Alma Mater, to take part in the popular alumni event series ‘Characters in Conversation’ with guest interviewer Tracy Piggott. Weld studied veterinary medicine at UCD, qualifying in 1970. Dermot Weld has saddled big-race winners across four continents, including all five Irish Classics as well as the Ascot Gold Cup, Dubai International Racing Carnival, Hong Kong Mile and the American Derby. Weld has also won the prestigious Melbourne Cup on two occasions.
Guest interviewer, Tracy Piggott will explore Dermot’s memories of his time spent at UCD and how his career path developed after leaving University. As one of RTE’s frontline sports commentators and a regular contributor to RTÉ’s Sports Stadium and Sunday Sport, as well as being the daughter of the late champion jockey, Lester Piggott makes Tracy an ideal candidate to interview Dermot Weld.
Tickets for this event are EUR 20 and can be bought at www.ucd.ie/alumni or by phoning 01 716 1447.
For you, the Dublin Event Guide Readers, the organisers have made 5 (!!) pairs of tickets available and if you want to win a pair of tickets, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with WELD in the subject and your name and phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 10:00 on Mon 18 April. If UCD, veterinary medicine or horses interest you, then this is definitely an event for you! secure.www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/CDB/events/event_order.cgi?tmpl=events&event=2312876.0

______Dublin News______________

ONE CITY ONE BOOK
You probably have seen posters on lamp posts and maybe you have read about it in newspapers: “Dublin: One City, One Book” is a month long event/programme, which encourages everyone to read the same book during the month of April each year. The chosen book for April 2011 is “Ghost Light” by Joseph O’Connor. Ghost Light is a fictionalisation of the real love affair between J.M. Synge and Abbey actress Molly Allgood. A number of events will take place during April that are connected to One City One Book. www.dublinonecityonebook.ie/

DUBLIN CITY OF SCIENCE – PROPOSALS INVITED
Dublin will be the European “City of Science” in 2012. This will be a year long programme of events that will highlight the role and value of science in society.
Partnerships are now sought with people and organisations that are interested in running and organising events to engage the public with science during 2012. You are invited to make proposals until 30 June 2011. Check out all the details and submission guidelines here www.dublinscience2012.ie/pep

SELLING EVENT TICKETS FOR Free – TOUTLESS.COM
Selling concert tickets on the street outside a venue is illegal in Ireland even if you have bought these tickets genuinely and properly and are now forced to sell them because other aspects of life interfere with you enjoying the event. It is quite annoying if you can’t sell tickets and I have experienced that myself not too long ago. Ebay, Gumtree, Buy&Sell are websites you can try to sell, but they are not really specialised so finding an interested buyer can be challenging. Recently I came across another website that specialises on ticket sales. It is www.toutless.com and is looking quite good. I didn’t try their services, but because it is a totally free service (just a discussion board where people can find each other), I think it is worth mentioning toutless.com here.

IRISH COMEDY WEBSITE – LAUNCH
A new comedy website for Ireland was launched on 01 April. You can find it at www.omfj.ie and their mission is to encourage creativity and laughter, and showcase predominantly Irish comedians in one place. There is as well a competition running (until 03 July) where you are asked to submit your own comedy videos or sketches and can win a “Fun Day Out In Dublin”. Check the website for details.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 8000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

ACUPUNCTURE AND COSMETIC ACUPUNCTURE
Ursula Elmes, a qualified and fully licensed acupuncturist based in Dublin has studied in China and in Dublin and is also an experienced Skin Therapist specializing in all types of skin concerns from allergies to Rosacea. She has joined the The French Beauty Day Spa, 30 Castle Street, Dublin 2 (Off Dame Street, Beside Dublin Castle) at the beginning of April from where she will offer her Acupuncture and Cosmetic Acupuncture services now. If you are interested in her services, check out www.frenchbeauty.ie/treatments.html and for more information about the French Beauty Day Spa go to www.frenchbeauty.ie. You can book Ursula’s services via info@frenchbeauty.ie or 01-6752020. And if – like me – you had never heard before about Cosmetic Acupuncture, now is the time to give it a go. I didn’t know that wrinkles and lines can be reduced with Acupuncture. Interesting!

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

PHILIPPA SUTHERLAND – PAUL KANE GALLERY
“iconography” is the title of the painting exhibition by Philippa Sutherland in the Paul Kane Gallery in 6 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. The exhibition will run from 08-30 Apr. The gallery is open Tues-Fri 11:00-18:00 and Sat 12:00-17:00. www.thepaulkanegallery.com

BICYCLE EXHIBITION – GALLERY NUMBER ONE
April+May: Gallery Number One, 1 Castle Street, Dublin 2
“Embrace the Spring” is the title of a Bicycle exhibition by Bear Bicycles at Gallery Number One. Bear Bicycles (a company selling Dutch bikes and delivery bikes in Dublin) will mark the beginning of Bear’s ‘Cycle the Seasons’ campaign, in which Bear introduces a unique bicycle for spring, summer, autumn and winter.
The bicycle exhibition focuses on bicycle lifestyle, and showcases bicycle products, bicycle films, and bicycle art by Matthew Knight – an Irish artist, influenced by Celtic, Aboriginal, Street, and Lowbrow art. www.gallerynumberone.com and www.bear-bicycles.com and www.facebook.com/bearbicycles

FRANCO-IRISH LITERARY FESTIVAL
The Franco-Irish Literary Festival is a meeting place for everyone interested in Irish and French Literature. It will take place from Fri 08 – Sun 10 Apr and the theme of this year’s festival will “Generations /Glunta”. All events will be free and will take place on Fri and Sat in the Coach House (in the Gardens of Dublin Castle) and on Sun in the Alliance Francaise in Kildare Street.
We all have the feeling of belonging to a certain generation, but based on what criteria? Is it being in the same age bracket? Is it common values and tastes? Is it the shared experience of a social and political event (the Baby-boom Generation, the Generation of ‘68, the Internet Generation, etc)? Generation is a universal theme but also a paradox: are we in step with our generation? That is why it raises so many question marks and feeds debate. This year the festival will therefore be geared towards the various issues around generations and their depiction in literature.
This year authors include: Geneviève Brisac, Véronique Ovaldé, Virginie Linhart, Phillippe Forest, Eric Fottorino, Claude Arnaud (France), Mícheál Ó Conghaile, Siobhán Parkinson, Caitriona O’Reilly, John Banville, Macdara Woods, Harry Clifton, Keith Ridgway, Paul Murray (Ireland), David Homel (Québec), Julia Frank (Germany), Carlo Gébler (UK).

HANDEL’S DAY – TEMPLE BAR
Wed 13 April: 12:00-22:00 – Temple Bar
On 13 April 1742 Handel’s ‘Messiah’ premiered on Fishamble Street in Temple Bar. Each year the Temple Bar Cultural Trust invites to a Handel celebration on 13 April with a number of events.
My personal preference would be the moving of the event to the weekend., it would make this part of Dublin’s history more accessible to the people.
This year’s -long celebratory programme of free events offering people of all ages the opportunity to explore and interact with the remarkable history of Georg Friederich Händel and his connections to Temple Bar and Dublin.
The events are:
+ 11:00-12:00: Let’s Walk & Talk “Handel’s Dublin – Then & Now”. (Meet at Wolfe Tone Square, Jervis Street, Dublin 1). This tour, a celebration of music and history with historian Pay Liddy, will take you around some of the Dublin streets that still echo to the visit of George Frideric Handel in 1742/3 before finishing at Fishamble Street in time for the yearly performance of ‘Messiah on the Street’ by Our Lady’s Choral Society and the National Sinfonia.
+ 12:00-13:00: Handel for Children (Cow’s Lane, Old City Temple Bar) – This modern take on the music of Handel will be performed by Harold’s Cross NS, the Tullamore Classical String School and joined by guest vocalists. This adaption of some of Handel’s most popular music will feature children’s vocals, intstrumental music and percussion, as well as introductions from participating schools, offering a modern approach to some of Handel’s best loved works.
+ 13:00-14:00: Messiah on the Street (Fishamble Street, Old City Temple Bar) Performed by Our Lady’s Choral Society with guest soloist Ross Scanlon and with live accompaniment from the National Sinfonia, this outdoors performance celebrates the day on the very site where Messiah received its world premiere in 1742. This unique choral “street-performance” of well known excerpts from Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is a great experience, especially the most famous “Hallelujah”. :-)
+ 18:30-20:00: Alexander’s Feast (G.F. Handel) – Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 – Performed by Our Lady’s Choral Society and the National Sinfonia with soloists Colette Boushell (soprano) Chloe Hinton (alto) Ross Scanlon (tenor) and Jeffrey Ledwidge (bass). Handel brought Alexander’s Feast to Dublin in 1742. To celebrate Handel’s Day this year, Our Lady’s Choral Society will present the work, also known as ‘The Power of Musick’ in the Handelian tradition in Temple Bar’s modern Musick Hall, the Button Factory. This is one of those rare performances not to be missed. In keeping with the feast theme, market traders from the Temple Bar Food Market will be offering food for sale outside the venue on Curved Street from 16:30-19:00. Admission is free, no booking required. Early arrival is advised as admission will be on a first come, first served basis. templebar.ie/Event/In_Handels_Day

The influence of his defining “Ten Principles” guidelines can be seen in the work of many of his followers, including Apple’s Jonathan Ives. This exhibition features a selection of original products alongside photographs of some of his iconic works. CENSUS IN IRELAND – USELESS EXERCISE?
On Sun 10 April the big Census Day is taking place in Ireland. I don’t get why people have to be counted in that NIGHT. It does make sense in hotels and hospitals, but not in normal homes. Instead everyone should be counted in his NORMAL or TYPICAL circumstances. The fact that someone is by coincidence away in that night, shouldn’t influence the results. That person still requires infrastructure, hospital beds, etc. It seems that the census enumerators (the people that make sure that you don’t get away from revealing all your privat information) are all panicking. I was talking to two and they were sooo afraid that I might fill in the form before Sunday night.
I read through the form and was surprised how nonsensical some questions are.
+ “Marital status” has not “cohabiting”? So, if you live with your partner for many years, but are not married, you have to put in single? That distorts the results about living circumstances completely.
+ “Religion” is oddly worded and the result will be useless information. The statistical results are meant to help to find out if religious schools make still sense. But to really find that out, the question should be “Do you practise a religion?” The fact that you were born by parents that had a specific religion, doesn’t automatically mean anymore that many years later you still feel affiliated to that religion. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/letters/2011/0404/1224293735849.html
+ “Do you speak any other language other than English”. Aehem, you are meant to fill in ONE language? I know quite a number of people who speak a number of languages and who use them at home interchangeably.
+ Allegedly the questionnaire is meant to be confidential, but the level of detail is such that there is no privacy left. Very odd that there were no concerns from Civil Rights groups.
Some of the information will be interesting, but there are a few questions where you wonder if the people wording the questions really have a clue. We all know that the way you ask a question can totally influence the answer.
An odd way to gather “information that is essential to plan for the provision of health care, education and social services”. What use is a census if it doesn’t EXACTLY reflect the situation in society?

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
