Hi all!

The last “normal” bank holiday of the year came….and went. Now we are heading directly to Christmas before we will have any more days off. And shockingly today in 2 months Christmas is already over! This week the clock will be set one hour back again and then the weeks and months of darkness will start. Doom and gloom! :-P Actually, as a child I always found November a particularly grim months!
But then when you grow up, you realise that the darkness outside can be compensated by cosy time in front of a fire place or near a heater OR – even better – at an interesting event. :-)

Obviously you don’t want to just keep these events to yourself, but you want all your friends to know about them as well. Correct? You can forward this newsletter to them by clicking on the FORWARD link at the very bottom of this mail and that way you did something nice for your friends and they can signup, just by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject MY FRIEND MADE ME. Sure they can just write SUBSCRIBE in the subject as well, but the other suggestion is a LOT more fun. ;-)

——
I had to promise to one of my friends that I would organise a Dublin Event Guide Meet-up/Party before Christmas if we make it to the targeted 7500 subscribers. It is looking very probable that this meet-up will take place. ;-) Provisionally you can already mark the 04 December in your calendar. But because it is another 5 weeks to that day and we are already sooo close to 7500, I would like to challenge you a bit more. Will we be able to reach 7777 subscribers by 04 December?? Are you prepared to help? If you are prepared to help send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject TARGET 7. Use these to let your friends know:

This space in the newsletter is called the “Feel Good Slot” and this week I found a simple story for you. It is about how the smile and the excitement of a child has such a big impact on us and is so infectious. And during the week I read that a child laughs 400 times during a day and an adult only 15 times. It seems that this is a slight misquote, but the truth is not far from it: In “Living Wonderfully” by Dr. Robert Holden (1994), Holden says “Social psychology research shows that children laugh on average 150 times a day; adults laugh on average only 6 times a day. During an average day, a child will smile 400 times; an adult will smile no more than 15 times”. What has happened to us when we left childhood behind? What happened to the 385 smiles and the 144 laughs??? I bet this story will make you smile: www.agiftofinspiration.com.au/stories/inspirational/Hoo.shtml

Are YOU as wonderful as Fiona and will support my weekly work writing this newsletter? You will make me smile! Donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) You can donate any amount you wish to help with or – as an option – you can now chose a yearly “subscription” on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
Instead whereby a 12 Euro donation will automatically be carried out every year.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week is full of Halloween events and if you are a child, young at heart or have children, you will be kept soooo busy. ;-) I will be at a seminar this weekend again, so my research into events in Dublin was solely for your benefit. ;-) I won’t be able to go to any of the events myself.
But I would do the following this week: On Saturday I would definitely go to the Point Village Market to see the Michael Jackson Thriller Flashmob. If any of you go, please video it and put it on You Tube (and send me the link!) :-). On Saturday evening, the Soul Power gig in the Westin Hotel is a MUST go! On Sunday I would go to the Dublin Flea Market and you will find me in Gardiner Street later for the Gospel Choir Mass.
On Tuesday the Green Drinks and the talk about the Future of Urban Cycling sound interesting. On Wednesday it is the Bewley’s Debate and – if my French was better – I would love to go to the talk about Ocean Waves in the Alliance Francaise. On Thursday the Amnesty International Talk about Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories interests me.
Check as well the Upcoming Events, there are some interesting talks and you need to request tickets for them!

It will take place in the Unitarian Church, St. Stephens Green, Dublin 2 on Sat 30 Oct at 19:30. Admission is EUR 5 and tickets will be available at the door. Stedall worked for the BBC for many years and made documentary films about Gandhi, Tolstoy, Jung, Betjeman, van der Post, the Camphill Movement and many ordinary people. His recent autobiography is called “Where on Earth is Heaven?” and he will be speaking and showing excerpts from his films at this event.
Martin Henry, the organiser, has made 2 pairs of tickets available and the winners are Tom Murphy and Anna Slomczynska. Congrats! www.jonathanstedall.co.uk/

INTO THE JEST – COMEDY DRAMA – INTERNATIONAL BAR
The Comedy Drama “Into the Jest” by Martin McDonagh will run in the International Bar in 23 Wicklow Street from 01-06 November. “Into the Jest is an intense rural Irish drama so entrenched with black humour that it will tickle and taunt. Far removed from the hustle n’ bustle of city life, the show consists of two short plays depicting firstly themes of bitterness & bickering in revealing the family secret to themes of murder and mayhem over a family pet in the second, all taking place in Ireland’s forgotten West.” Tickets are EUR 5 and can be booked by calling 086 8557755.
The organisers made two pairs of tickets available for this event and the winners are Ann Mackin and Hugh Cardiff. Congratulations. The tickets are for the performance on Mon 01 Nov. www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=161054590580350&v=info

I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

HELP CHANGING DUBLIN…AND WIN A HELICOPTER FLIGHT
A number of people asked me to leave this information in the Event Guide for another week or two, so that as many people as possible will find out about it:
There are quite a number of initiatives taking place at the moment that all aim to improve Dublin. One new one, run directly by Dublin City is called “Your Dublin, Your Voice”. You are asked to complete a short survey before Fri 10 Dec to share your Experience of Living, Working or Studying in Dublin. If you help with your opinions you will be entered into a prize draw and two lucky winners will each receive a voucher for two people for an scenic helicopter tour of Dublin. Go to the survey here: surveys.delve-surveys.com/dccpanel?friendref=133545975

CAFÉ BAR DELI GONE, FRENCH RESTAURANT HAS ARRIVED
I wrote about Café Bar Deli a few weeks ago. About the fact that the one in Ranelagh had closed down and about the fact that the one in South Great George’s Street was closed for renovation and allegedly was meant to re-open. It didn’t! Café Bar Deli is gone! In Sth Great George’s Street the restaurant has been taken over by “Le Café des Irlandais” and re-opened under new management in the beginning of October. A new décor and a new atmosphere has arrived, but it seems that the customers are not yet convinced. When I walked by yesterday it was emptier than it should be on a Thursday evening. The dishes on the menu look unfamiliar and they are not well described which might be an issue. What is needed is good food, that is easy understood for an attractive price. Look at Green 19 a massive success built on a very simple and straight forward concept. If you want to have a successful restaurant, just do what the people in Green 19 did (www.green19.ie). Delicious food, all main courses at 10 Euro and the people are running the door in.

GREASELESS SPOON CAFÉ – FREE FOOD
From Tues 02 Nov until Thurs 04 Nov Tefal will be bringing ‘The Tefal Greaseless Spoon Cafe’ to Dublin. This new concept has never before been seen in Ireland and involves Tefal taking over a cafe where they will cook meals using only Tefal products and serve them up to lucky patrons free of charge. The Greaseless Spoon Cafe will be operating for breakfast and lunch and reservations are open to everyone. Simply become a fan of our Nutritiousanddelicious facebook page, for full details on how to make a reservation. All bookings must be made in advance and as places are limited you should book as early as possible. Steve Lowe, Consumer Marketing Manager commented ‘The Greasesless Spoon Cafe aims to demonstrate that consumers can still enjoy their favourite meals but in a healthy, tasty and nutritious way’. Interesting marketing idea! www.facebook.com/nutritiousanddelicious

COMPUTER SHOP SALES PERSON WANTED – A1 COMPUTERS
A1 Computers one of the main supporters and sponsors of the Dublin Event Guide is looking for a Computer Shop Sales Person for Dun Laoghaire. If you are interested in this full-time job, see www.a1computers.ie for more information and how to apply.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come!

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

BRAINBELT ILLUSTRATION COLLECTIVE

DESIGN WEEK AT THE MALTHOUSE

This exhibition is entitled Imagined/Re-imagined and will be launched by the Irish architect Dermot Bannon. It will be launched on Tues 02 Nov at 18:00 with a drinks reception and will run daily until Sun 07 Nov from 11:00-19:00. SUMMERTIME -> WINTERTIME
Did you change all your watches? At 02:00 on Sunday morning the clock is set one hour BACK to 01:00. Some clever phones do it automatically, so if you change the clock before you go to bed and the phone changes it again, your time is wrong in the morning. Ideally you have one “dumb” reference clock …or just use TV or radio for a time check. ;-)

CHILDREN’S ART WORKSHOP – PHOENIX PARK
The weekly Children’s Art Cart Workshops at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre is taking place every Sun from 10:30-12:30. Up to 20 children can participate but they must be supervised by an adult. The next workshop is 31 Oct: Halloween masks and after that the workshops are 07 Nov: Tracing fun; 21 Nov: Pond life; 28 Nov: Medieval life; 05 Dec: Christmas cards; 12 Dec: Christmas decorations; 19 Dec: Making wrapping paper. The website doesn’t have an up-to-date list at the moment, but I am assured the workshops are going ahead. You can check with the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre (Phone 01-6770095) if you prefer. www.phoenixpark.ie/newsevents/title,12181,en.html
(Last minute Update: One of the guides who run the workshops is sick, so it could be that this Sunday’s workshop will have to be cancelled. Ring on Sunday before you go to check!)

On Sun 31 Oct the concert is “Common Tongue” with Lorcán Mac Mathúna, Cathal Roche and Ian Wilson, a unique trio combining sean-nós singing, improvising saxophone and live electronics. This group of musicians have together undertaken an exploration and re-contextualization of the art of sean-nós, providing new melodies to old Irish songs, considering fresh ways of defining and presenting melody itself. www.hughlane.ie/whats_on_detail.php?id=580

DON MICHAEL O’LEARY FIGHTING AGAINST WINDMILLS??
Do you know Miguel de Cervantes’ tragic figure “Don Quixote” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quixote)? In Cervantes’ book Don Quixote fights against windmills because he thinks they are a thread and the term “tilting at windmills” is formed. “Tilting” means “attacking imaginary enemies, or fighting unwinnable or futile battles”.
Michael O’Leary of Ryanair reminds me sometimes of Don Quixote when he gets outraged about the travel taxes. It’s not that I think he is wrong, I think the 10 Euro travel tax that was introduced in Ireland in March 2009 is totally wrong and is seriously damaging the tourism industry in Ireland. Now many other countries see travel taxes as a welcome instrument to easily take more money from people and oddly it appears that the low flight prices of the past are a good justification: If flights are soo cheap, we might as well add another bit of a tax, because people’s pain threshold is a lot higher. The travel tax was introduced in the UK despite warnings of a negative effect and will be introduced in Germany from January 2011. In Germany the tax is even crazier than in Ireland because it will be up to EUR 25-45!
Michael O’Leary says that he will reduce flights and will postpone expansions in the countries that have introduced a travel tax. He has done that in Ireland and in the UK and is threatening the same in Germany. (www.reuters.com/article/idUSLDE69806L20101009 and www.rte.ie/news/2010/1027/ryanair.html) On one hand I am glad that he does that, because if politicians will listen to anybody, then they will listen to Michael O’Leary more than to you and me. But the big question is: What will O’Leary do if every major country has introduced a travel tax? Will he then close down Ryanair? Or will he increase the number of flights again?
Either way, the years of cheap flights seem to be over. A few years ago, I got a return flight to Germany incl. luggage and taxes for EUR 38. From 01 Jan, the same flight would cost a minimum of EUR 145 in taxes and charges and the flight price still has to be added on top of that! So we are close to EUR 200 at the end. :-o
