Hi all!

The weather gods are not overly happy with us, it seems at the moment and if you open the newspaper then you wonder if we will ever get out of the hole again. …and then I read in a newspaper that the economic situation in a lot of aspects (mainly as far as individual taxes etc are concerned) has arrived at a 2003 level again. Sure, that is 7 years ago, but in 2003 we all thought that Ireland was in very good shape! It was definitely a good year. What I am trying to say is that despite all the negative press, we are not that deep in trouble as it might seem. What we have to do is to go back to the way we lived in 2003 (or before) with similar spending patterns and financial expectations. Yes, I know that some people are more affected than others and that someone without a job might not have the luxury to just scale back to 2003, but for the rest doom & gloom might not be as bad as the newspapers make out. It will get trickier, but there was life before 2003!

[ad]

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you every week to re-discover a less expensive life and as I can prove to you if you don’t believe it, having less money does NOT mean that you have to give up on fun and culture. In 2003 Ireland was a lot less rich in culture and event opportunities and you really had to search for good things. For the last 177 weeks you have this Event Guide and all the information is at your fingertips!

Make use of it! Because the more you go to free events, the more event organisers will realise that this is a very viable and rewarding way of providing culture!

I am very happy with the near 7500 people that “come together” every week when you receive this newsletter: But sometimes I am surprised that it is only 7500 considering that every single person that enjoys going out could benefit from it. ;-)

And when you plan your weekend or your week, don’t forget your friends who would love to be as well informed as you are:

For this week’s “Feel Good Slot” I found a YouTube clip that makes the rounds at the moment. It was created last week by T-Mobile as an ad and it took place at Heathrow Airport. It is a flashmob event and it is cool! I took part in a flashmob in Grafton Street before and it is a lot of fun and imagine arriving at Heathrow and being greeted in this unique way: www.youtube.com/watch?&v=NB3NPNM4xgo

No donations this week, so I will dig in my own pocket. Maybe you have a bit of money left over next week to keep the Event Guide on the road! Every bit of help is very much appreciated. It is really easy to make me smile! And one way is to donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm :-)

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) You can donate any amount you wish to help with or – as an option – you can now chose a yearly “subscription” on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
Instead whereby a 12 Euro donation will automatically be carried out every year.

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Taxback.com is offering a free 4 year tax refund assessment to all Dublin Event Guide Subscribers. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions below you could be looking at a nice lump sum from the Revenue Commissioners: Did you…
…work part-time or full-time? …pay your GP or dentist? …rent property in the last 4 years? …pay tuition fees? …pay bin charges? …been on maternity leave?

It seems that this week is the “Lecture/Talk/Discussion Week” of the year. So many interesting talks and discussions and I have soo little time. Design Week is still running, Science Week is starting on Sunday and the Innovation Dublin Festival is starting on Wednesday. No surprise that that is a guarantee for a packed Event Guide!
This weekend I will meet some friends after a long-ish period of training courses at the weekends. I am looking forward to it and it seems that I am recruited as well to do an Ikea run. ;-)
Apart from that I plan to go to the Art Fair (not free) in the RDS (probably on Saturday) and to the Italian Food & Drinks event in The Bernard Shaw Pub. The International Charity Bazaar in the Burlington Hotel is not free, but I might go again. On Sunday evening I would love to go to Shazwanda in the Dragon, not for the XFactor element, but for the Comedy. ;-)
On Monday if you have time, go to DCU, the film at “Friend or Foe” is meant to be very good. On Wed Innovation Dublin starts and is added to the Science Week. The result is a slight event overload. ;-) On Wed I would love to go to the “Landing on the Moon” talk and afterwards to the Innovation Unplugged event in the NCI. On Thurs the Franchising Talk and the Met Society talk sound interesting. I, however, will be in the O’Reilly Theatre where the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir (with me as sound engineer) sings at a charity event.
On Friday the “Story of Sugru” interests me HUGELY and if I didn’t have to think of you and the Event Guide, I would definitely go to that talk! And for the evening I am considering “Songs of Soul”. What a busy week again. :-)

STOP IN THE NAME OF LOVE – SUPREMES – GEORGE
“Stop! In The Name Of Love” is the name of the “Sounds of The Supremes” live event in the George on Fri 05 Nov. The “Sounds of The Supremes” led by 70s and 80s ‘Supreme’ Kaaren Ragland will perform live on stage at the Irish Gay Bar “The George”. In The Name of Love’.
Since 1989 “The Sounds of The Supremes” (the only group of their type legally endorsed by Motown) led by Kaaren Ragland, a former member of original Supremes Mary Wilson’s 70s/80s group have achieved a remarkable degree of worldwide success. There will be tickets at the door for EUR 10, so you can still go even if you didn’t win.

Within the space and elegance of the Main Hall, in the historic complex of the RDS Ballsbridge, the Artists and Galleries gather from all national and international corners to show and sell their work to the Art loving Public, with works on canvas, sculpture, prints, photography and other media. All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

GOOD TIMES FOR CYCLISTS
If we can go by a relatively brief new item this week, the coming years will be good for cyclists in Dublin. Dublin City Council has said that up to 4000 new bicycle parking spaces are required in Dublin because so many more people are taking up cycling. This in itself is not the sign of upcoming good times (Most people are not happy with just a bicycle parking space. ;-) ). But the news indicates that Dublin City has become aware of cyclists and is prepared to look after them. www.rte.ie/news/2010/1104/bikes.html

REVEAL DUBLIN’S MAGIC PLACES
Designing Dublin, a creative design team working with Dublin City Council are exploring why and where people go in Dublin and how we use and enjoy the city. In Innovation Week, these amazing and magical places will be collected under the title “Love the City” and then Designing Dublin (www.designingdublin.com/) will tell the rest of us about them. Lindsay R., a friend or mine, is involved with that project and is looking for your help.
Tell him about your favourite curiosities, your preferred, magical or amazing places in Dublin. He has already spoken to many people about this, so the standard places are already covered he is now looking for an answer to “What gems or quirky things do you know of in the City that no one else/hardly anyone else knows?” and “Do you know of any amazing or magical places in Dublin City?”. Send a mail to lindsay@design21c.com to let him know. Your mail has to be with him by Monday evening (08 Nov). Thanks for your help!

HELP CHANGING DUBLIN…AND WIN A HELICOPTER FLIGHT
The interest in this is huge, so it will stay here for another short while to make sure that every one got a chance to share their opinion: Dublin City wants to improve the city. For “Your Dublin, Your Voice”, you are asked to complete a short survey before Fri 10 Dec to share your Experience of Living, Working or Studying in Dublin. If you help with your opinions you will be entered into a prize draw and two lucky winners will each receive a voucher for two people for a scenic helicopter tour of Dublin. Go to the survey here: surveys.delve-surveys.com/dccpanel?friendref=133545975
Once you register and complete the first survey you will then become a member of the ‘Dublin Opinion Panel’. As a panel member you may be contacted up to four times per year to complete a short survey about Dublin…and you can win more prizes.
For more information about the whole initiative check www.dublincity.ie/YOURCOUNCIL/Pages/Yourdublinyourvoice.aspx

FOCUS IRELAND NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Focus Ireland, the housing and homeless charity, are currently recruiting a team of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to help with our annual ‘Key to a Home’ Collection on Fri 19, Sat 20 & Sun 21 Nov. Volunteers will be working in teams selling Focus Ireland key rings in busy locations throughout the weekend. This donation of your time and effort will help raise vital funds to support Focus Ireland’s work with people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Volunteer briefing sessions will be held before the campaign so volunteers can expect to be fully briefed on the work of Focus Ireland and the aims of the ‘Key to a Home’ campaign.
If you are interested in giving a few hours to this fundraising event, please register on the ‘Key to a Home’ page on www.focusireland.ie or contact Joanne Ryan on 01-8815916 or at joanneryan@focusireland.ie.

TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC
Sometimes visitors ask me where they could hear traditional Irish music and there are a few pubs and venues that have Irish Music Sessions. I can’t mention all of them, but found out about one that I hadn’t heard about before:
Every Fri+Sat there is a traditional Irish music session in the Castle Hotel in Great Denmark Street, Dublin 1 (very near O’Connell Street). The music session takes place on Fri+Sat from 19:30-22:00 and all are welcome. www.thecastlehotelgroup.com
Other good places for traditional music are the Cobblestone at Smithfield Plaza on a Saturday afternoon (if I remember it right) and – since recently – the Schoolhouse in Ballsbridge on Saturdays from 20:30. If you can recommend any other good venues that have regular sessions, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject TRAD and I will add to the list.

DUNDRUM TOWN CENTRE BOYCOTT BECAUSE OF SANTA
Please join me in my boycott of the Dundrum Town Centre! There are no religious or political reasons for this boycott and I can’t complain either about how someone treated me there or anything like that. The only thing I take exception to and the reason for my temporary peaceful protest is that the Dundrum Town Centre has asked Santa to arrive already on Sat 06 NOVEMBER and will switch the Christmas lights this weekend as well. This is just crazy, MUCH too early and because I am a Christmas extremist (No Christmas before 01 December!) I will boycott the Dundrum Town Centre. ;-) – No, I am not really serious about the boycott, but I AM serious about my outrage of the early start of Christmas! www.dundrum.ie/events/someone-special-is-coming/

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come! New companies that will be mentioned here soon are a Car Sharing Scheme and a Nutritionist. Watch this space.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

DEIRDRE O’BRIEN – PAUL KANE GALLERY
“Transient Light” is the exhibition by Deirdre O’Brien in the Paul Kane Gallery. The exhibition will run from Fri 05 Nov until Sat 26 Nov. The Paul Kane Gallery, 6 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. www.thepaulkanegallery.com

SPACEBAR – DIGITAL ART SHOW – MAD ART STUDIO
The “Spacebar-Digital Art Show” features illustration, digital painting, video, 3D and anything behind the words “computer art”. The group exhibition is part of the Design Week 2010 and the participating artists are Killian Dunne, Mario, Eleine Hoey, Sheena Flynn, Liam Smyth, Damien O’Reilly, Fiona Byrne, Gavin Beattie, Serena O’Neill, Shane O’Connor, Chris Donelly, Ciaran Hussey, Hubart, Lisa Kelly and Domicjan. The exhibition runs from 04 Nov until 13 Nov in the Mad Art Gallery, 56 Lower Gardiner Street, Dublin 1. www.madartstudio.com

DESIGN WEEK 2010
The Design Week 2010 runs from Mon 01 Nov until Sun 07 Nov and if you are interested in design you most likely (and hopefully) already know about it. The purpose of Design Week is to put a spot light on the Irish Design Scene by running events during this week. The event listing (scroll to the Dublin section) lists 39 events in the context of Design Week and you should check them out to see if a few of them grab your attention: designweek.ie/events.html A good few of the events are exhibitions, but there are talks/lectures as well and a number of workshops. The full programme is here: designweek.ie/DesignWeek_layout%28LoRes%29.pdf

ReForm 2010 on 05 Nov from 10:30-16:00 is part of Design Week 2010. The purpose of the event is to create networks, combine knowledge and this year the focus will be on growing the fledgling sustainable design (SD) network in Ireland.
This year’s event will be in the ‘Pecha Kucha’ format (20 slides each shown for 20 seconds), giving a platform to Irish designers who have made the bold step into sustainable design practice. The seminar will take place in the Science Gallery on Fri 05 Nov from 10:30-16:00. LIFE SIZE CLUEDO – ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
“Qui a assassiné Jacques Perrin?” is the title of a Life Size Cluedo in the Alliance Française on Fri 05 Nov at 19:30. Who killed Jacques Perrin? The situation is serious at the Manor of La Main Noire… Jacques Perrin, a French teacher of the Manor, has been strangled. All the residents of the Manor are upset and each one becomes a suspect. That’s why the Landlord of the Manor decided to call Grolumbo, the famous French inspector. He will resolve this enquiry but must be helped to interrogate all the suspects by a lot of aspiring investigators…YOU. If you want to be part of this event (sounds like fun, but my French is definitely not good enough!) contact info@alliance-francaise.ie to set up a team. Admission is free. alliance-francaise.ie/culture/ This event was originally scheduled for 29 Oct and has been rescheduled now to 05 Nov.

MOVEMBER MIDNIGHT MOVIE – SUGAR CLUB
If you have never heard of Movember, then you might be confused by the word and surprised by the odd growth in some men’s faces! ;-) Movember is “Moustache November” and in recent years means that some guys grow a horrible looking ;-) moustache during the whole month of November to raise money for prostate cancer research. To get you in the mood, the Sugar Club in Leeson Street, will screen two movies in which moustaches play an important role. On Fri 05 Nov the Movember Midnight Movie is “This Is Spinal Tap”. “The hilarious Mockumentary/ROCKumentary is essential viewing for any music fan and any of you lot who want to get hairy: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMTPQVOWCiU Doors open at 23:00. Every weekend on Sat and Sun the Point Village Market is taking place from 09:00-17:00. It is an outdoor food market with a flea market-like add-on. You can (sometimes :-/ ) find more details here: www.pointvillagemarket.ie/events

CLOTHES SAMPLE SALE – CENTRAL HOTEL
I am not sure if I can declare this event as “free”. SCIENCE WEEK
Science Week is Ireland’s biggest annual promotion of science to the general public. This year it runs from Sun 07 Nov – Sun 14 Nov with the Dublin Libraries running their Science Week events from Mon 08 Nov until Fri 19 Nov. The aim of Science Week is to promote the relevance of science, engineering and technology in our everyday lives and to demonstrate just how important it is to the future development of Irish society and the economy. “The theme for Science Week Ireland 2010 is ‘Our Place in Space’ where we will examine and explore the latest happenings in astronomy and what Ireland’s role in the Space industry is today; as well as learning about how our ancestors studied the planets, and the vital role played by science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in helping us to make sense of our universe.” Events take place in libraries, schools, college campuses, airports, on-street, in nature reserves, parks and retail outlets throughout Ireland. Science Week is aimed at children of all ages, primary and secondary school students, parents, teachers and anyone who may be interested in science.
All information can be found on www.scienceweek.ie and many events are amazingly interesting. I wish I could take the week off to spend time at Science Week first and then at Innovation Dublin. Pity that work gets in the way of all the fun. If you are lucky to have time, make sure you check the website and go to some of the events!

SONGS OF THE SOUL – RDS CONCERT HALL
Songs of the Soul is an experience of the stillness and power of meditative music, performed by an international ensemble of over 60 musicians. The concert features music performed in a variety of styles – from a-capella choral singing, to sitar and tabla improvisations, haunting solo tenor vocals, culminating in a powerful finale with all musicians on stage. The Songs of the Soul concerts were started in 2008 as a tribute to the music of the late composer Sri Chinmoy. Since then, the musicians have toured all over the world, visiting 25 countries in just two years. Over a performing career lasting over 20 years until his death in 2007, Sri Chinmoy performed at almost 800 public concerts free of charge, out of a belief that inner peace and joy was not something you could charge people for. “Songs of the Soul” continue that tradition and free tickets can be requested by calling 086-2576699. For more information (and to get a taste of the concert experience), check www.songsofthesoul.com

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

WHO HAS BEEN MOVED BY THE GOVERNMENT?
Did you hear about the Donegal by-elections? And the unacceptable delay? Maybe here: www.rte.ie/news/2010/1103/byeelection.html
Let me explain: Ireland has a rather unique political system where you can’t vote for a party but you only vote for a couple of people. And you don’t vote for anybody else but the couple of people in your area. In my opinion this system is totally counterproductive and not very democratic, but that is a completely different discussion.
So, you can only vote 2 or 3 people per constituency into the parliament (Dail) and if one of them gets elected and later resigns or dies, a new election, called a “by-election” (sometimes spelled “bye-election” has to happen in that constituency. Because the current Government expects that it will loose all or most of the seats that currently require by-elections, it is delaying this elections for nearly 2 years. Very questionable and most undemocratic, but now there is some movement in the whole story! The government has decided to “move the writ”. Move what? And move to where?
Interestingly, nothing is moved. A “writ” is a formal order and “moving” in this case just means that a formal order is given to carry out these by-elections. It’s an odd and very British expression and, sure, there would be an easier way to express it. But legal and political systems like to be difficult and hard to understand. Not surprisingly, the bet explanation is provided by the British parliament: www.parliament.uk/about/how/elections-and-voting/by-elections/
