Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

Great Culture & Rain

Baggotonia Festival, Grow College Green, Dublin City Flea, Play Streets Day, Festival of History, European Researchers Day

Hi!!

Culture Night 2025 is behind us, and what a night it was! Despite the rain, Dublin’s streets were filled with energy, curiosity and plenty of umbrellas. From music and dance to history and art, the city’s cultural institutions and creative corners opened their doors and invited us in for an evening of discovery. It’s always a treat to see the familiar in a new light and to find hidden gems in unexpected places.

There’s something quite special about Culture Night – it breaks down barriers and brings people together in shared spaces to celebrate creativity. It’s also a brilliant reminder of the vibrant cultural life that thrives all year round in Dublin, not just on one special night.

Many of the venues and performers featured last night offer free events throughout the year – and you can find many of them listed right here in the Dublin Event Guide every week.

And now? Well, as we pack away our Culture Night maps and dry off our raincoats, the next major celebration is Open House Dublin. Different and somewhat less frequented, it’s another fantastic opportunity to explore the city in a new way, this time through its architecture and built heritage. Open House Dublin will be on from 11-19 October (with the main days to visit sites in Dublin on the weekend 18+19 Oct). A LOT of events need pre-booking and booking opens on 24 September, so be at the front of the queue on Wednesday! Tickets are snapped up like hot cakes. Book here https://openhousedublin.com/

Until then, this weekend offers a wide array of free cultural happenings again. So get out, soak it in and let Dublin surprise you all over again – rain or shine.

P.S.: I had a great Culture Night, but unfortunately, that means that this newsletter is super late today. Apologies! If I am sooo late, I try to post the Saturday events on the Facebook Page as early as possible, so keep an eye out for it there. I hope that helps a little. https://www.fb.com/DublinEventGuide

If you have friends or family or colleagues that also enjoy cultural events in Dublin, let them know that they can sign up for the free weekly Dublin Event Guide newsletter at https://getthislink.com/DEGSignup

The working title for my video series on YouTube is the “Better You” videos, they are all about 5-7 minute long about how to better your life. Check out this video series if you want to achieve more in life, but are talking yourself out of it. https://www.youtube.com/@JoergSteegmueller

Donations in September:
EUR 93

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

This week a whole range of wonderful people helped with donations. They were Adrian and Luana. Thank you so so much!

Slooooowly the donations are increasing. But only one week left this month, so we need to “find” another EUR 107 in just one week. :-O

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: https://gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via http://www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also https://revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here https://www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to http://www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

Positive Ageing Week will take place from Fri 26 Sept until Friday 03 Oct. The number of events listed at https://positiveageingweek.com/events/ is not really impressive, but I would imagine that over the next few days a good few more will be added.

+++ Dublin Tourism Office in new location
Who remembers the wonderful Dublin Tourism Office in St. Andrews Church in Suffolk Street? It was quirky having the Tourism Office in a former church and it had a nice and inviting atmosphere. But in 2015 it was decided to move it to new premises in Suffolk Street and in their wisdom the people designing the office, created what was compared to an Apple Computers Shop. Super modern, minimalistic and super cold and – in my opinion – totally uninviting.
Style is subjective and I probably am not the best person to request style-advise from, so maybe I am completely wrong, but the “new” Tourist Office left me completely cold.
Last night, at Culture Night, I walked that location and saw that it is emptied out and will be turned into a restaurant. I have no idea when the Dublin Tourism Office moved out and I couldn’t find a press release about the closure/move (unlike the big news for the opening in 2015: https://www.failteireland.ie/Footer/Media-Centre/State-of-the-art-%E2%80%98Visit-Dublin%E2%80%99-Centre-with-a-futu.aspx). But when I checked if there is a new location, I found here https://www.dublintown.ie/business/dublin-visitor-centre/ that it seemed to have moved to O’Connell Street.
So if you have friends visiting you and you or they are looking for advice, don’t bring the to Suffolk Street anymore!

Doing another bit of a search, I found that the 25 Suffolk Street site might have closed already in 2020. :-O It seems that I have to do more exploring of Dublin! I am out of the loop!

+++ Sculpture in Context Exhibition
The brilliant “Sculpture in Context” exhibition is returning to the National Botanic Gardens. In its 40th year, the exhibition will run from 04 Sept until 10 Oct.
For this special exhibition, big sculptures will be set up right in the middle of the Botanic Gardens, surrounded by vibrant plants and gorgeous natural views. Entry to the National Botanic Gardens – and the Sculpture in Context exhibition – is free every day. https://sculptureincontext.ie/

Every week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. All events are free, but access is by registration only. And these events are POPULAR!! So when I get to checking them out on the Friday before they take place, the most interesting ones are usually already booked out. If you are interested, check them out here https://cultureclubdublin.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows (This week you only see a few, because every month a new batch is uploaded not in a rolling way, but in a month by month way.)

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at https://www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)
