Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

The sleigh is leaving

Christmas at the Castle. Christmas at Farmleigh, Merchy Christmas

Hi!!

Only one more week to Christmas? Didn’t this pre-Christmas time just fly by? Santa will be here and gone sooner than you think!

So this weekend is the last chance to go to the Christmas Market at Dublin Castle (until 19 Dec) and to the other markets. (Find them at www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com) and it is also the last chance to buy your Christmas presents.

As every year, the number of events goes right down for Christmas and then re-starts again carefully after 26 December, with a proper restart only in the new year. But you know that wherever and whenever there are free cultural events, the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is there to help you! 841 weeks by now and there is no end in sight.

Since Christmas is the time of giving presents to loved ones. You could consider the Dublin Event Guide as a loved one. ;-) Donations for the Dublin Event Guide are very very welcome. Even at this time of the year. And just to remind you, the money will not go to me, but will be only used for paying the bills for sending out and posting the Dublin Event Guide week after week.

Donations in December:
EUR 294

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week, the wonderful people that helped with a donation were Helen, Maria, Angela, Fiona, Jennifer. Thanks so much! Your help is much appreciated and is making a difference. Because of you, the Dublin Event Guide continues spreading the word about free events!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ Entangled Islands – Ireland & the Caribbean

05 Sept-29 Feb – 10:00-17:00 – EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: included in normal admission

Discover 400 years of Irish links to the Caribbean in this temporary exhibition (until February 2024) that  tells the stories of a wide range of Irish people who traversed and settled in the Caribbean. It all started in the 17th century, when Irish indentured labourers were among the many thousands transported to work on islands acquired by the English. The Irish in time found their way into positions of power and privilege across the region, whether as plantation owners or colonial governors.
Entangled Islands traces this long and multifaceted history of connection through 19 key figures on either side of the Atlantic, from merchants and enslavers to poets and journalists.
Admission is included in the normal ticket price. Find out more here epicchq.com/entangled-islands/

And there is more…

+++ St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre: Dublin’s Lost Icon
In the heart of Dublin, the St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre has stood as a beacon of commercial and cultural significance since its establishment in 1988. The centre, near the historic St. Stephen’s Green park, quickly became an iconic feature of Dublin’s cityscape, celebrated for its unique architectural design and vibrant atmosphere.
However, the once shining star of Dublin’s retail landscape has dimmed over the years. The centre, which once buzzed with the latest trends and fashions, gradually fell out of favor as newer, more modern shopping complexes emerged.
And now, in a bittersweet turn of events, 2023 marks the end of an era for the St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre. Dublin City has granted planning permission to demolish this once-iconic building, paving the way for a new, modern shopping centre.
I am not sure when the demolition will start, but if you are in Dublin City over Christmas or after Christmas, visit the St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre once more to say your good-byes to this unique piece of Dublin.

www.rte.ie/news/business/2023/1215/1422266-permission-for-st-stephens-green-centre-redevelopment/

+++ Live Animal Crib at Mansion House
The Live Animal Crib is back! After last year’s mayor saw some non-existent animal welfare issue with the crib, this year the crib is back and it is open from 06-24 December. You would think that the opening hours will be mentioned somewhere, but unfortunately that is not the case. But if we assume 11:00-17:00, we are probably very close. www.ifa.ie/resources/ifa-live-animal-crib-returns-to-mansion-house-for-christmas-2023/

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get! – Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ Dublin Winter Lights in Merrion Square
The “Winter Light” installation at Merron Square is back and while it is not free (EUR 2 per adult with 2 free kids included), it is low-priced enough to mention it here. This is not a Christmas light installation, but nice and entertaining lights that could mesmerise your children. You can buy tickets and see some pictures at dublinwinterlights.ie/dublin-winter-lights-merrion-square/

+++ The Moving Crib is moving again

The Moving Crib is a crib that stretches across the whole basement of the St Martin Apostolate at Parnell Square and in which the figures move in a endearing way. So it is particularly suited for kids, but also adults will get something out of it. The Moving Crib is open from 11:00-17:30 every day (with a small number of exceptions) from 27 Nov until 07 Jan. Admission is free. The address is St Martin Apostolate, 42 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1 www.stmartin.ie/crib/

+++ THE DOCKERS OF DUBLIN PORT – EXHIBITION
From Thursday 23 Nov Dublin Port Company presents the exhibition “Solidarity – The Dockers of Dublin Port”. It will be on show in the newly refurbished Substation building on Alexandra Road and will describe the story of the dockers in Dublin Port, a story of hardship but also one of humour and resilience. The exhibition is open every Thursday until Sunday from 11:30-15:30. Admission is free. www.dublinportarchive.com/news_event/solidarity-the-dockers-of-dublin-port

+++ IKEA Crafting / Music / Cooking Workshops
Ikea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops and there are still some places available. The workshops are free and go for 45 minutes and are for children. Check them out on www.ikea.com/ie/en/stores/events/ikea-ballymun/

+++ Some more events:
Find Library events here www.dublincity.ie/events
and Trinity College Events here www.tcd.ie/news_events/events/?day=13&month=11&year=2023&search=week

+++ Storytelling and Toddler Groups at Dublin City Libraries
The Dublin City Libraries have published a list of Storytelling and Toddler groups for age 0-4 across the Dublin City Libraries. You can find it here www.dublincity.ie/library/blog/storytelling-and-toddler-groups-dublin-city-libraries

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
