Dublin Event Guide 793: The Dublin Event “Book” – Again full of Gigs, Exhibition Tours and Comedy

January 14th, 2023

Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

The Dublin Event “Book”

Again full of Gigs, Exhibition Tours and Comedy

My brother tried to ring me yesterday and on his side, it was indicated that my phone was busy the whole evening. (It seems that his phone service provider had some technical problems ringing mobile phones abroad.) But my (not so) little nephew had a perfect explanation for why I didn’t answer: “Joerg is probably writing on his book again, it is Friday evening!” ;-)

It’s not a book, but it sometimes feels like one. It is just the weekly Dublin Event Guide that I am writing every Friday evening/night.But the amount of events is huge.

Every week is slightly different, but usually there are soo many events, that we nearly could call it the “Dublin Event Book”. :-D How do you like this “book”? Is it still helpful? Let me know if you get a chance!

I love this about Dublin and about the event and venue organisers in Dublin: There are ALWAYS plenty of cultural events happening and to top it, MANY events are free. Dublin is definitely not boring and while the city is admittedly very expensive in a lot of aspect, if you follow the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, you will get a supply of fresh and interesting event suggestions week after week that don’t cost you a cent.

I would love to grow the Dublin Event Guide this year to let even more people know about all these free events. Can you help? When was it last time that you told anybody about the Dublin Event Guide? Could you maybe let one or two people know in this coming week? They can subscribe for free at www.DublinEventGuide.com

Donations in January:
EUR 196

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

The great people that donated last week were Jana, Emma, Grainne! Thank you so much! Your donation will keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and will motivate me to continue week after week. I appreciate you and your support!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 3. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

And there is more…

+++ Gardiner Street Gospel Choir looking for (male) singers
Some of you know that I am involved with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the longest established choir in Dublin. (There were only two Gospel Choir and we don’t know anymore if us or the other choir was first, over 20 years ago! ;-) )
After some difficult lockdown years, we are restarting the choir, have a new Musical Director, are changing up the repertoire and will build the choir again to the strength it had before.
For that, we are looking for some new signers to join the choir. If you are interested, send a mail to info@gardinerstreetgospelchoir.com  WE are looking for male and female singers, but initially male singers will be brought in first. Get in touch if you can sing, enjoy it and want to be part of a great Gospel Choir. We have great plans for 2023!!! ;-) www.gardinerstreetgospelchoir.com

+++ LOW PRICED BOOKS (WITH FREE DELIVERY)
Book Depository is the place where you can buy low priced books, usually for better prices than on Amazon. And Book Depository always delivers for free. By buying books from Book Depository you will also help the Dublin Event Guide for no additional cost to you, so two good reasons in one. Use this link: shor.by/BookDepository
  .

+++ Bowie Photograph Exhibition – Bowie Festival
An exhibition of Bowie photographs by Philippe Auliac will be on display from Wed 11 Jan – Sun 29 Jan in Rathfarnham Castle (10:30-16:15). Admission is free (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).
Since first shooting Bowie in 1972, the French photographer has captured the rock icon many times over his long career. Many of these images are now deemed classic portrayals and for this extensive exhibition Philippe will have over 60 photographs on display as well as an audiovisual screening of further images and some rare interviews with the starman. www.dublinbowiefestival.ie/philippe-auliac-23

+++ Formula 1 in Dublin – Road Closure
This is not a free event and the tickets are all sold out so you might wonder why I am mentioning it here. Two reasons: 1) So that you know what is happening in case you see hoards of people making it to North Wall Quay and 2) So that you are aware of a total closure of North Wall Quay on Sunday.
The event starts with a display of Red Bull Formula 1 cars on Saturday from 13:00-17:00 opposite the Central Bank on North Wall Quay. Tickets are required to see the cars and all tickets are sold out!
The main event then is a Showrun of Red Bull Formula 1 Cars and other cars and motorbikes on Sunday. Ex-Formula 1 Driver David Coulthard will drive the Red Bull F1 car from 2011. There will be 3x 30 min shows between 16:30 and 18:00. All tickets are sold out.
North Wall Quay will be closed from the Convention Centre to the 3Arena from 13:00-21:00
www.redbull.com/ie-en/events/showrun-f1-dublin

+++ Discover Dublin Docklands App
Dublin City has a new app that allows us to discover iconic Dublin landmarks such as the famine statues, the CHQ building and more.
The app is available to download for free via doorsintodocklands.com/
After you got the app, you can point your phone at the landmarks and this will prompt the related images, videos and stories to pop up.
The app uses Augmented Reality (AR), a mix of 3D graphics, animation and audio, to immerse users in the story of the city.
Several colourful characters from history will also appear in AR to tell their tales. These include Captain Bligh who surveyed Dublin Bay in the 1800s and Maggie Doyle, who was a docker’s daughter.

+++ Chasing the Ball – Football Exhibition
The Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin, with the support of the Embassy of Italy in Ireland are inviting to a football sticker exhibition in Printworks at Dublin Castle, showcasing original material covering the 1990, 1994 and 2002 World Cups.
Ireland and Italy and their football teams will be the focus and you will find a series of albums, stickers, drawings and other original materials.
The exhibition will be on show from 06-22 Jan and admission is free. Opening hours is Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:30.
www.facebook.com/opwdublincastle

+++ Housing Unlocked Exhibition
The “Housing Unlocked” exhibition is described as a celebration of innovation, optimism and imagination. Eight architect-led proposals will be presented that are intended to unlock the housing potential in our villages, towns and cities.
Housing Unlocked is a partnership between the Irish Architecture Foundation and The Housing Agency.
The exhibition will be open from 14 Oct-18 Dec and from 03-17 Feb (Tues-Fri: 12:00-17:00, Sat: 14:00-17:00). It will take place in the former Science Gallery in Pearse Street (Naughton Institute of TCD). Admission is free. housingunlocked.ie/

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get!

Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
