Dublin Event Guide 789: Last chance to visit Christmas Markets! – Christmas at the Castle (no tickets needed!), Capital Dock Christmas Market, Useless Project Christmas Flea Market

December 17th, 2022

Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

Last chance to visit Christmas Markets!

Christmas at the Castle (no tickets needed!), Capital Dock Christmas Market, Useless Project Christmas Flea Market

Good Morning!! :-)

How is your pre-Christmas time going? I went to the “Christmas at the Castle” Christmas Market at Dublin Castle last weekend, to find out that tickets are not required at all. (More about that at the bottom of this weekly newsletter.)

And this weekend I ran away to Germany to the area where I am from and last night I went to the Christmas Market in the neighbouring town where I went to school. It was COLD (-8 degrees), but wonderful and the food and Glühwein (Mulled Wine) was amazing. ;-)

A hot Glühwein at the Christmas Market on a freezing cold day is a big and essential part of Christmas for me. What experience or event makes your Christmas? Tell me at dublineventguide@gmail.com

If you are not as lucky as I am to get away for a weekend to go to a REAL ;-) Christmas Market, then don’t despair! Different but also good, there are lots of markets still happening in Dublin as well. Check out www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com for a list of all relevant markets in Dublin.

Now I am in my parent’s house, listening to Christmas music, writing the second last Dublin Event Guide before Christmas for the 18th (!!) time. And while I am doing that in the 18th year, I am hoping that some of you will help with a small or a big donation to pay for the cost of sending this weekly listing. The time for creating it I give for free (more than 15 hours per week), but I need help with the bills for sending it, for the website and domain names. Thank you if you have helped before or if you are about to help this week!

Donations in December:
EUR 147

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

The great people that donated last week were Natalia, Helen, Maria, Gabriela, Elaine and Danielle! Thank you so much! Your donation will keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and will motivate me to continue week after week. I appreciate you and your support!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 3. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

And there is more…

+++ The best Dublin Christmas Markets website!! ;-)
Check out the Dublin Christmas Market website, brought to you by the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), at www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com

+++ Christmas Market at Dublin Castle – Tickets not needed!!

If you want to go to the Christmas Market at Dublin Castle and don’t have tickets, don’t let that hold you back! Tickets are not necessary and I am starting to believe that it was never planned to check tickets.
The purpose of stopping people from coming because they think they need a ticket has been achieved. The market is LESS than full and now the OPW is actively inviting people to come even without tickets on the Dublin Castle Facebook page.
Tickets do NOT work for a long duration event that is weeks away and where there are no admission charges! There is a whole range of reasons for that and I won’t bore you with the details. But hopefully the OPW and the market organisers have realised that for next year.

+++ LOW PRICED BOOKS (WITH FREE DELIVERY)
Book Depository is the place where you can buy low priced books, usually for better prices than on Amazon. And Book Depository always delivers for free. By buying books from Book Depository you will also help the Dublin Event Guide for no additional cost to you, so two good reasons in one. Use this link: shor.by/BookDepository
  .

+++ Dublin Winter Lights at Merrion Square
This is not a free event, but it is very inexpensive (EUR 2 for 1 adult with 2 kids) and the money goes to build a mobile sensory room for future events.
The lights in Merrion Square are interactive lights, light projections and live characters.
You don’t need to book or pre-buy tickets, but can walk up and pay at the entrance. The Winter Lights in Merrion Square are open from 17:00-21:00 every day until Thursday 22 Dec. Entrance is on Merrion Square East. dublinwinterlights.ie/dublin-winter-lights-returns-to-merrion-square-park-2/

+++ Christmas at the Mansion House & Garden
Every day from 12:00-18:00 (03-24 Dec) the new Christmas experience at Mansion House will welcome visitor. After the Live Animal Crib was sent away (and found its new home in St. Stephen’s Green Park), the Mansion House has a Wishing Tree, a Traditional Crib, Pot Grown Christmas Trees, ReCreate Workshops in the Oak Room and a Pedal Power Workshop. Details are at dublinwinterlights.ie/christmas-at-the-mansion-house/

+++ Live Animal Crib – Now in Stephen’s Green Park
The current (temporary*) mayor of Dublin did her best to kill off the Live Animal Crib that traditionally was outside of Mansion House to have some new Christmas display there. But after 27 years in Dublin, the Live Animal Crib is too popular and many many people were involved in finding a new place for the crib.
This year it will now be at the Summer House in St. Stephen’s Green park from Thu 08 Dec until midday on Fri 23 Dec. The Summer House is next to the lake in the park. The animals will be there from morning until late afternoon every day.
(*All mayors of Dublin are unelected by the people of Dublin and are appointed for one year only.) www.ifa.ie/resources/live-animal-crib-coming-to-st-stephens-green/

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or something completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes down further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get!

Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ The Moving Crib – On Display

The Moving Crib at the Saint Martin Apostolate in 42 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1 is on display for the 66th year from 24 November until 08 January from 11:00-17:30 every day.

(Closed: Christmas Day, St Stephen’s Day & New Year’s Day. Early closing on Christmas Eve & New Year’s Day at 15:00).

The Moving Crib is a huge installation in the basement of the St Martin Apostolate building that shows a range of crib & bible scenes with moving figures in each scene.

November might still be a bit early, but closer to Christmas, it is a nice destination with your little ones to discover the stories in the display together (as long as the bible is relevant in your or their lives). Admission is free and booking is not required. www.stmartin.ie/crib/

+++ Housing Unlocked Exhibition
The “Housing Unlocked” exhibition is described as a celebration of innovation, optimism and imagination. Eight architect-led proposals will be presented that are intended to unlock the housing potential in our villages, towns and cities.
Housing Unlocked is a partnership between the Irish Architecture Foundation and The Housing Agency.
The exhibition will be open from 14 Oct-18 Dec and from 02-21 Jan (Tues-Fri: 12:00-17:00, Sat: 14:00-17:00). It will take place in the former Science Gallery in Pearse Street (Naughton Institute of TCD). Admission is free. housingunlocked.ie/

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.
