Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)

Not too late for goals!

Smithfield Sessions, Science Week, Glendalough in Lego, Dublin Book Festival, Family Treasure Hunt, Global Village Festival

Hello there!!

[Apologies for the lateness of this Dublin Event Guide. I ran into some technical problems.]

There are less than 50 days left in 2022 and while it is too early to review the year, it is not too late yet to get back to your New Year’s resolutions! Do you remember what you promised yourself more than 300 days ago? How did it go with these plans?

Because you are human (and for no other reason!!) there is a good chance that you didn’t reach yet what you had set out to achieve. But today is a good day to start either once again or maybe even for the first time. You do NOT need to wait until 01 Jan!

Maybe your plan was to loose weight or stop smoking or start working out and start reading. Start today and you still have nearly 50 days to make a difference.

Or maybe your plan was to go to more free events in Dublin and that’s where this “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” comes in handy! If it is worth going (and if it is free), it is mentioned here.

The full version of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is sent by e-mail to all subscribers and is also on www.DublinEventGuide.com A shortened version – with only the events for the weekend – will also be posted on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page. The Dublin Event Guide is free (and funded through your donations!) so you can invite all your family, colleagues and friends to use it and (ideally!) to subscribe to it on the website.

Donations in November:
EUR 178

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

The great people that donated last week were Olga, Diana, Corina, Mary and Mairin! Thank you so much! Your donation will keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and will motivate me to continue week after week. I appreciate you and your support!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses. The first of those bonuses is described above.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 3. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

This Science Week, families can take part in a special family tour with an added science focus.

You’ll complete science-focused challenges inspired by their stories, such as writing in ‘code’ and inventing a new vehicle.
Suitable for families with children aged between 6-12, this Family Tour utilises a mixture of games, sensory and drawing activities so that participants can engage with history in an enjoyable, hands on and engaging way. epicchq.com/event/family-fundays-explorers-family-tour-science-tech-focus/

Sun 13 November – 13:00-15:00 – EPIC, chq Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1 – Adm: Included with ticket entry

What’s the difference between an engineer and a coder? What does a doctor, an explorer or an astrophysicist need to do their job?
Discover the stories of Irish emigrants John Phillip Holland – the inventor of the first working submarine; Jocelyn Bell Burnell – who discovered a new type of star; Kay McNulty – who worked on the world’s first general purpose computer, and Ernest Shackleton – who explored the South Pole, in this month’s museum pop-up! epicchq.com/event/family-fundays-explorers-science-week-suitcases-pop-up/

Welcome back Tiny Tots to a fun interactive storytelling session at EPIC. Meet EPIC’s famous figures in these workshops suitable for ages 3 – 6 years old.
In this Science Week special, you’ll discover Cynthia Longfield, the Irish entomologist – someone who studies insects and bugs – also known as Madame Butterfly. Explore the natural world alongside her as you learn how the Irish have impacted science worldwide, from biology and chemistry to physics! Who knows, your little one may be the next one to join their ranks.
Travel through Europe, South America, the Pacific, Africa, and Asia, all while discovering peculiar plants, fabulous flowers, beautiful butterflies and dainty dragonflies. This is a special sensory, immersive workshop in which parents and children will work together to bring the magic of the story to life. epicchq.com/event/tiny-tots-science-week-special/

+++ Tuscan Buffet Party [Ad]
Do you like Italian Food and Wine? Then this event, organised by Gianni from the “Italian Food and Wine in Ireland” meetup group, is definitely for you! Gianni invites to the Mount Merrion Community Centre, where on Sun 20 Nov from 17:45-21:00 he will introduce you to a great variety of delicacies from the region in Italy he comes from. There will be breads, cold cuts, sausages and cheeses on a buffet and there will be Tuscan wine.
Meet other foodies and friends of Italy and of Italian food and find out more about Tuscany.
The Mount Merrion Community Centre is only 500 metres from the N11 (Stillorgan Road) which is served by the bus routes 46A, 155, 145, 7B and a good few more. So it is really easy to get there. There is also plenty of free parking.
Tickets are EUR 31 per person and are available via www.getthislink.com/TuscanBuffet (Booking required)

+++ Science Week 2022

From Sunday 13 Nov until Sunday 20 Nov, the Science Week 2022 will take place. Science Week includes a wide variety of events involving industry, colleges, schools, libraries, teachers, researchers and students throughout Ireland. The festival is organised by Science Foundation Ireland. In addition to the many individual events here www.sfi.ie/events/, there will be 19 STEM Festivals around the country, six online Science Week Shows (for Primary and Post-Primary Schools) and an immersive outdoor installation in Merrion Square Park in Dublin (16-19 November) exploring human biology through light, sound and fire, called “BODY @ Science Week” (Booking required and some slots are already booked up. Booking link see above in Thursday and Friday listing.)
I counted more than 40 free events in Dublin and you can find them by using the selectors on the left hand side on the www.sfi.ie/events/ page. Only a small number are in the listings above, so I strongly recommend that you check the event on the website. Many of the events will take place in the National Botanic Gardens at the “Plant Science Festival” botanicgardens.ie/plantscienceweek/ there.

+++ LOW PRICED BOOKS (WITH FREE DELIVERY)
Book Depository is the place where you can buy low priced books, usually for better prices than on Amazon. And Book Depository always delivers for free. By buying books from Book Depository you will also help the Dublin Event Guide for no additional cost to you, so two good reasons in one. Use this link: shor.by/BookDepository

+++ Lego Model of Glendalough

Artist Jessica Farrell used 44,388 Lego bricks to recreate Glendalough and on Saturday and Sunday the model is on display in the National Museum in Kildare Street. www.museum.ie/en-IE/Museums/Archaeology/Events/2022/10-122022/Science-Week-Glendalough-LEGO-Open-Day
And if you like Lego models then do NOT miss the model of the National Library, which is in the lobby of the National Library, just next to the National Museum in Kildare Street. I LOVE the model of the National Library. It is so realistic and detailed, just amazing!!

+++ Christmas at the Castle – Booked OUT :-(

The Christmas Market at Dublin Castle will be back from 08-21 December, but unless you were super fast or very very lucky, you and I will NOT see it this year. :-( Odd that for a Christmas Market tickets are required, but in crowd-control-obsessed Dublin nothing surprises.
The free Tickets went on the “market” on Friday and were all sold out a few hours later. So disappointing! www.eventbrite.ie/e/443218748207

+++ Housing Unlocked Exhibition
The “Housing Unlocked” exhibition is described as a celebration of innovation, optimism and imagination. Eight architect-led proposals will be presented that are intended to unlock the housing potential in our villages, towns and cities.
Housing Unlocked is a partnership between the Irish Architecture Foundation and The Housing Agency.
The exhibition will be open from 14 Oct-18 Dec and from 02-21 Jan (Tues-Fri: 12:00-17:00, Sat: 14:00-17:00). It will take place in the former Science Gallery in Pearse Street (Naughton Institute of TCD). Admission is free. housingunlocked.ie/

+++ LOTS of Trinity College Talks
Trinity College is offering really interesting talks and LOTS of them. There are so many that I couldn’t include them all, so please check out www.tcd.ie/news_events/events/ and if you check before Monday, then click on “NEXT WEEK” towards the top to see all the events that take place next week.

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or somethign completely different? Nearly every subject is there! Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest price most of the time is EUR 12.99. Sometimes it even goes doen further to EUR 9.99 and when that happens (about once or twice a year), I will tell you. But even 12.99 is definitely a good price for what you get!

Check out the website at www.getthislink.com/Udemy22 And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
