Dublin Event Guide 762: Soooo many events! – Cruinniu na nOg, UCD Festival, Saoirse Music Festival, People’s Art Exhibition, Bloomsday Festival

June 11th, 2022

Dublin Event Guide (for free events)

Soooo many events!

Cruinniu na nOg, UCD Festival, Saoirse Music Festival, People’s Art Exhibition, Bloomsday Festival

Hi all!

Thanks so much for the lovely birthday wishes and the really helpful birthday donations for the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” on its 15th birthday last week. Your support is MUCH appreciated.

And it is not just the support through good wishes and donations, it is also you leaving messages on Facebook or showing that with the right clicks that you actually want to see the Dublin Event Guide in your newsfeed. Without that Facebook would stop showing the Dublin Event Guide.

And it is you going to the website at www.dublineventguide.com and clicking on ads and buying through the ads or doing the same in the e-mail newsletter, because although there is only a very small reward that advertisers pay, every cent counts.

And if you did none of the things mentioned above, but just regularly read the Dublin Event Guide and sometimes went to events, then you ALSO support this whole project/initiative/mad thing! ;-) (Even after 15 years I am still not totally sure what to call it. Hehehehehe)

Find all details about the Super Soul Sunday (Sat 19 June) in the bottom section of this newsletter.

You might wonder why I say “mad thing”? This is why: At the time of writing this it is 20:00 on Friday evening and I will be working now on searching for free events and writing about them for the next 12-14 hours. After the Easter weekend and the bank holiday weekend, this coming weekend and the one after that are SUPER busy with lots of events. So – like every Friday – there won’t be any sleep for me tonight, just events! That’s why I (and people around me) sometimes call it a mad thing! :-D

Cruinniu na nÓg, a day of free creativity for young people, will happen this weekend.

Donations in June:
EUR 313

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week the great people that helped with donations/birthday presents were Carija, Pia, John, Joaquin, Kevin, Estelle, Siti, Adrienne, Isabelle, Lorna, Ian and Jennifer! Thanks a lot! You are really appreciated and your donation is essential to keep the Dublin Event Guide alive. You are the BEST!!!! :-)

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses. The first of those bonuses is described above.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 3. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

And there is more…

+++ Cruinniú na nÓg – Day of creative activities for children and teenagers
Cruinniú na nÓg is a national day of free creative activities for children and young people under the age of 18. This year, it will take place on Saturday 11 June and there will be lots of free events in the four parts of Dublin: Dublin City, Fingal (North Dublin), South Dublin and in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown. Check all events here:
Dublin City: cruinniu.creativeireland.gov.ie/events/location/dublin%20city/
Fingal: cruinniu.creativeireland.gov.ie/events/location/fingal/
South Dublin: cruinniu.creativeireland.gov.ie/events/location/south%20dublin/
Dun Laoghaire: cruinniu.creativeireland.gov.ie/events/location/d%c3%ban%20laoghaire%20rathdown/
The day is organised by Creative Ireland, which is a 5-year programme of the Irish Government that connects people, creativity and wellbeing.

+++ UCD Festival
On Saturday from 12:00-18:00 the UCD Festival 2022 will take place. It is a day of “thinking, creating, innovating and fun making” with lots of really interesting events. One of the highlights is an hour long talk with Astronaut Chris Hadfield, but unsurprisingly it is booked out. Nevertheless, there are many other events taking place that are not booked out yet and you can find them all in the events list at festival.ucd.ie/events-timetable/ I counted more than 100 (!) events. There are 8 different Festival Zones from Family Fun Zone via Mind Body Zone and Engineering & Technology Zone to a Sports Zone. So you can see that there is something for everybody. Admission to all events is free and the festival will take place on the UCD Campus at Belfield along the Stillorgan Road/N11. festival.ucd.ie/

+++ Super Soul Sunday – Gospel Rising Music Festival 19 June 2022
Super Soul Sunday, a Gospel Rising Music Festival event is back with lots of Gospel Choirs from all over Ireland performing in Mountjoy Square, Dublin’s North East Inner City Georgian park on Saturday 19 June from 12:30 to 18:00.

I will definitely be there and I hope to see many of you for this great day with really good music. ;-) The last Super Soul Sunday was in 2019 and this video shows how great it was www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dkGyaJKfbg

Supported by the North East Inner City Initiative of Dublin City, the outdoor concert is free and will feature live performances from many of Ireland’s best, upbeat and gospel style choirs. Food trucks, children’s entertainment, picnic tables & necessary facilities are all available in the park for the festival. There are also gospel choir music workshops being run (supported by the Dublin City Council Arts Office) including an experienced singer’s workshop with Audrey Mattis and a workshop specifically designed for those living with dementia, their families, friends, supporters and carers. More details are on www.gospelrising.com

+++ Bloomsday Festival
From 1914-1921 James Joyce wrote the novel Ulysses and it describes a day that fictional characters experienced in Dublin. The day is 16 June 1904 and the characters in the book had a busy day visiting lots of locations and venues across Dublin and down to Sandycove. Leopold Bloom was the main character and because of him the day is called “Bloomsday”.

James Joyce fans across the globe celebrate this day with readings, performances, re-enactments and lots of other events. They dress up in Edwardian costume, have breakfast like the people in the novel had and gather at all the locations that are described in the novel. If what I just described was about “Trekkies”, re-enacting a Star Trek episode, many would shake their head and would mumble “Weirdos!”. ;-) Strangely the weirdness of re-enacting the similarly fictional Ulysses is seen as a high-quality cultural event. ;-)

In the end both Trekkies and Joyceans LOVE what they do and there is no harm done whatsoever, so if you want to celebrate Bloomsday Festival, find all the events at www.bloomsdayfestival.ie/ The festival takes place from 12-18 June. An interesting “feature” of Bloomsday Festival is that MANY events are NOT free! :-( But if you search a little, you will still find a number of free events.
