Dublin Event Guide 758: Festivals! – Culture Date with Dublin 8, Bike Week, Biodiversity Week, Phizzfest

Dublin Event Guide (for free events)

Festivals!

Culture Date with Dublin 8, Bike Week, Biodiversity Week, Phizzfest

Hi all!

This weekend I am away for the first time since December 2019. It took 2.5 years since I last saw my parents and at their age, this is very precious time, so I hope it is ok with you that the Dublin Event Guide will be a little slimmer today.

Not that I would leave you stranded, I wouldn’t do that! ;-) But some events, like the Bikeweek that is taking place this coming week, will only be mentioned as a summary event and you will have to look up the individual events and a few of the events during the week didn’t make it in.

By the way, the biggest impediment to providing you with an even better Dublin Event Guide is still the fact that Facebook completely messed up their event listings since the last layout change. I would LOVE to talk to someone in Facebook about that, but as you probably know, Facebook doesn’t talk to us unwashed people. :-(

Before the layout change, the Facebook event listings were fully searchable and consequently they were used a lot by event organisers of all sorts. Since the layout change (and that was quite a long time ago) you can’t search for events in Dublin anymore, but you have to specify in what category you are searching and there are MANY categories. And if there is no good search, then events are not easily found and event organisers will give up on posting their events.

I really don’t get how Facebook thinks they will maintain their market share and their active users long term. Sure in the short term people will still be around, but there will be competitors and unless they buy them all, they will undoubtedly take users away. And if you think that will never happen, then remember Bebo (if you are old enough!!! ;-) ).

Next week the Dublin Event Guide will be back to normal operation! Not thanks to Facebook :-), but I will be back … and I found some tricks to still find a good few events on Facebook! :-D

Donations in May:
EUR 218

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week there were no donations. Not a big problem, because as the donation counter tells you, you donated currently enough to pay for the next bill. But with NO donations and VERY little engagement on the Facebook post, providing this weekly service, sometimes feels quite lonely and the question “Is anybody out there?” easily comes to mind. :-O

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses. The first of those bonuses is described above.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 3. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ Culture Date with Dublin 8 – Festival
This Dublin 8 based weekend of events is a great destination this Saturday and Sunday. All events on Sunday are free and on Saturday only one event is not free. Marsh’s Library, next to St. Patrick’s Cathedral will be pan and admission is free. There will be free walking tours, guided tours at the War Memorial and in the Irish Museum of Modern Art and there will also and a children tour in Kilmainham Gaol. Even a market, the Twilight Market, from 14:00-20:00 on Saturday at the Digital Depot with 50 stalls will take place. All events are here www.culturedatewithdublin8.ie/may-weekender-saturday14th On Sunday you can visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Christ Church for free. In addition there a number of events at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, two guided tours in Phoenix Park, a guided tour in Kilmainham Gaol for children (Age 8-12), two walking tours in the Liberties and an Open Day at Myra House. All events are here www.culturedatewithdublin8.ie/may-weekender-sunday-15th-may

+++ Phizzfest 2022 – Festival
Together with LOTS of other festivals, Saturday and Sunday are also the main days of Phizzfest 2022 in Phibsborough. There are about 10 free events on each day. 20 free events is GREAT for a single festival, so check them out at www.phizzfest.ie/ In my endeavour of trying to simplify and shorten this week’s Dublin Event Guide because of my time away, none of the free events made it into the listings above, but please check out the Phizzfest website! It is worth it!

+++ National Bike Week – Festival
From 14-22 May the National Bike Week is a celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling. Organised by “Transport for Ireland”, which is an initiative by the National Transport Authority, there will be events all over Ireland. In the Greater Dublin area, the events are listed by region:
Dublin www.transportforireland.ie/getting-around/by-bicycle/bikeweek/dublin-city/
Finglas (North Dublin) www.transportforireland.ie/getting-around/by-bicycle/bikeweek/fingal/
South Dublin www.transportforireland.ie/getting-around/by-bicycle/bikeweek/south-dublin/
Dun Laoghaire www.transportforireland.ie/getting-around/by-bicycle/bikeweek/dun-laoghaire-rathdown/
I have a few events listed in the events listings above, but it is only a FEW events.

+++ COMPETITION: Gospel Rising Music Festival – Ticket Competition
Do you know about the Gospel Rising Music Festival? A great group of people organise this amazing Gospel Music Festival every year (with a bit of a break due to some global health issue recently) for the last 10 years or so. I was at the festival myself a few times and ran a workshop at the last festival three years ago.

Gospel Rising is back and will take place in DCU in Drumcondra from 17-19 June. Check out gospelrising.com/ for all details. You can book individual workshops or the whole weekend and until 09 May there are still some Early Bird tickets available! (gospelrising.com/festival-2022/tickets-2022)

A brand new event during the festival is the “Know Your Lyrics – Gospel Rising Music Game Show” in The Sugar Club. It will be lots of fun: Two teams compete to pick the right lyrics of well known gospel music songs. Led by their host and with the help of the audience, two fantastic piano players will captain their team of gospel singers through a series of rounds against the clock to guess the hidden song lines. Remember the “Lyrics Board” on RTE? Yes, there are some similarities! ;-)

The Gospel Rising organisers made two pairs of tickets available for the “Know Your Lyrics – Gospel Rising Music Game Show” on 18 June and if you would like to win, you have to send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with GOSPEL RISING in the subject line.
Your mail has to include your full name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail and you have to tell me in which Dublin Park the “Super Soul Sunday” will take place on Sunday 19 June. (Hint: gospelrising.com/2022/early-bird-weekend-tickets-now-on-sale) Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Monday 23 May.

+++ International Literature Festival Dublin
The International Literature Festival Dublin takes place from 19-29 May and for the first time, the main Festival site will be Merrion Square Park. There are also some additional events in other venues (e.g. Oscar Wilde House, National Gallery, Irish Architectural Archive and the Trinity Long Room Hub) all in the neighbourhood of Merrion Square. In Merrion Square, five tents will be the locations for all the events. The organisers tell us that in addition to the non-free events, “We also cater for a limited number of free drop-in events.”, but I wasn’t able to find these free events easily and in the end gave up. Hopefully you have more luck! The full programme can be found here ilfdublin.com/whats-on/festival/

+++ National Biodiversity Week 2022
From 13-22 May, National Diversity Week will take place and ALL events are free! A lot of events take place outside of Dublin, though. If you want to check out all events, follow this link biodiversityweek.ie/events-calendar/
But if you are only interested in the events in Dublin, then the following link will show you the 10 events in Dublin biodiversityweek.ie/events-calendar/tag_ids~37/
One of the usually most “in-demand” events is the Bat Walk. It will take place on Fri 20 May at the National Botanic Gardens and is organised by the Irish Wildlife Trust and if you are interested you should book your place quickly at www.eventbrite.ie/e/330647775397

+++ National Drawing Day
On Saturday 21 May, the National Drawing Day 2022 will happen. It is a day of…you guessed it… DRAWING! And lots of museums, galleries, libraries and cultural organisations all over Ireland are inviting to events that will encourage you to get drawing. I am predicting that next week’s Dublin Event Guide might arrive a little too late next Saturday morning to allow you a good planning of the day, therefore I suggest that you check the list of participating venues at www.nationalgallery.ie/explore-and-learn/drawing-day-2022 to find the place where maybe a suitable event for you will be run.

+++ Bealtaine Festival
Every May, the Bealtaine Festival takes place. Bealtaine is Ireland’s national festival which “celebrates the arts and creativity as we age” and is run by Age & Opportunity. This is a oddly cumbersome description, but it expresses the difficult balance act between what the Bealtaine Festival essentially once was, a festival for old people, and what it wants to be, an inclusive festival for everyone who is older than around 50 without calling them old yet. A difficult balance act. And the saying “if you want to be something for everyone, you will be nothing for anybody” comes to mind. If you asked me, I would describe the Bealtaine Festival as a cultural festival for older people who otherwise don’t get much involved in events and culture and it has a REALLY important function in that role. It makes getting out and meeting others more accessible for many people. It is just a pity that it is limited to one month per year. There is a large number of events and you will find them all at bealtaine.ie/events-2022/ but this year the Bealtaine festival seems to be much smaller than in previous years. If you want to limit your search to events in Dublin City, you can use this link bealtaine.ie/bealtaine-event/?_sft_event_county=dublin-dublin-city and find 52 events. Many of them are free events, so have a look! A few of the free events will be in the listings above over the next 4 weeks, but only a few. ) Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Monday 23 May.

+++ James Connolly Festival
The James Connolly Festival is a week-long series of events in “radical arts, culture and politics” in four different venues in Dublin 2. The Festival takes place from Saturday 07 May until Sunday 15 May. Find all events here www.eventbrite.ie/o/james-connolly-festival-44255574573 Admission is free, but booking is required.

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or NLP or some Business related “soft skills”? Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest cost for courses this month will be around 12.99. Check out the website at shor.by/GqCk And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

And this is it for another week! Have a great weekend and good new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
