Hi all!
Museums are open, events are re-starting, the OPW has made a big announcement (see at the bottom of this newsletter) about Irish heritage sites and the traffic is back on our streets. And when on Monday all retail re-opens (watch out Penney’s, here we come!) then we are nearly back to normality.
Ok, Pubs, Restaurants, Gigs, Parties, Festivals and Travel are still missing, but who remembers them anyway. :-O But seriously, it looks as if all is just a mattter of time and luckily not THAT much more time!

Thanks to the help from some of you (a lot less than I had hoped for, to be honest, but at least there were SOME ;-) ), last week’s Facebook Reach of this newsletter went back to an acceptable number again. With life opening up again, some people will feel very insecure and we will have to help them to re-learn “normality” again. Especially elderly people might have big concerns. I see it in a relative of mine who is double vaccinated and not the biggest socialiser anyway, but she is super worried of even just going into her own garden. The spreading of fear by media and authorities was so effective that she is worried to leave her house.

We also need to send a message to our authorities, that makes it clear that ANY ongoing restrictions have to b e evidence-based and without evidence we will not accept them/live by them. The current highly contentious issue are antigen self-tests, which are an absolutely important means to open society again in many countries. They also will be the ticket (literally!) to open large scale events again. However, in Ireland, key figures in NPHET argue against clear evidence and international experts in a bizarrely ignorant and arrogant way. For some reason they don’t get it (or don’t want to get it?). The NPHET position is so laughably incorrect that an eminent virologist from Harvard Medical School was wondering what the ulterior motives of the NPHET representatives are.

+++ Free admission to ALL Irish Heritage Sites managed by OPW
The OPW (Office of Public Works) manages most Irish Heritage sites, including Dublin Castle, Kilmainham Gaol, Rathfarnham Castle, Kilkenny Castle, Brú Na Bóinne/Newgrange Visitor Centre and many others. To hel with the recovery and getting back to normality, the Minister of State with responsibility for the OPE, Patrick O’ Donovan has announced on Friday that admission to all sites will be free until the end of the year.
In normal times this would be super news and I would celebrate it. But at the moment we still are in different times. Some sites are closed (e.g. Kilmainham Gaol), other sites have limited visitor numbers and guided tours are also still cancelled. So the celebration is a little dampened, BUT, there is a real possibility that all sites will open before the end of year AND that guided tours will re-start again and once that happens, then this free access until the end of the year is great news. The Dublin Dance Festival (with this year’s focus on Dance Films) will take place from 18-30 May. It seems that there are a couple of free events as well, but it is so difficult to find out which events are free and which aren’t that I had to give up. The International Literature Festival Dublin also takes place at the end of May (20-30 May). They run some free and some non-free events and the full list (unfortunately also without a clear identification of free evens) is here ilfdublin.com
