So many great things to do!! – Open House Dublin, Kila Live, Hello October Market, Frisbee, Women’s Enterprise Day, Theater Festival

Hi all!
We all know that “We are in this together!” died very very early on in Covid times. The idea was right, after all we ARE all in it together. The emotional bonding COULD have helped us, but – as dramatic as that might sound – the Covid crisis wasn’t affecting (most of) us enough to get us to really hold together and support each other.

But because we are really all in the same situation, it is about time that we become aware of that again. We need to do better! Not to eradicate the virus, that will NOT happen. But to protect the people that need to be protected. Solidarity is completely gone, it seems.

So, we should strive to do better, but also our leaders need to do a lot better. No matter if they politicians or scientists, they ALL have ZERO experience with the situation we are in. And they should all “experts” and everybody else admit to that and explain honestly what their drivers are for their recommendations or decisions. If leaders don’t lead with honesty, no leading will happen!

Last week was not a good example of how leadership should be done in a country. Vulnerability and honesty are feared as weakness by people in leadership positions, but interestingly the followers – in most cases – appreciate both traits when genuine.

As it looks at the moment, we will definitely move to Level 4 and possibly to Level 5 in the next few weeks. We don’t HAVE to go there, but if you see how normality has returned measured by traffic levels and people’s behaviours, it is not really a surprise.

The responsibility is with EACH of us!

Even with the employee in the health food shop in Rathmines who wears a useless face shield with – wait for that – a 2cm “letter-box” type cut out in front of her eyes. I would love to know who or what she thinks she will protect with that fragment of plastic. It is hilarious when you see it, but her “misbehaviour” is obviously far from the parties and gatherings that happen elsewhere.

This was a long rant, I know. But I love meeting people, doing sport with others, singing in a choir and going to cultural events and unless we start taking responsibility all this will not happen again until the end of NEXT year.

The “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” would be so much better if live events were happening and we could go to them!! Until then, though, I will do my best to let you know about as many other cultural events in Dublin as possible so that you don’t have to stop living even while being a LOT more careful.

To do this effectively, there are some cost and so we have found this deal: I do the work and you help me pay the bills through donations. As long as this works, I will continue. If I have to do the work AND pay the bills, I will stop. Fair??? I think so!

I am not asking for a lot, but I think one or two Euro per MONTH is a very fair suggestion. So for the year, this would be 12 Euro or – for people you can afford a bit more – just 24 Euro per year! That is ONLY 23 or 46 cent per Dublin Event Guide edition! An amazingly low cost for the great value that you get every week! :-)

Please donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide
or for Revolut users among you just via 0872931571.

And if 12 Euro is too much for you, then it would be great if you bought one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide and you can do that on the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And come over to www.DublinEventGuide.com to check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps!!

Thank you very very much!

You want for more events and suggestions?

I found a few more things to keep you going or that you might find interesting:

1) PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
To celebrate the birthday of “Phantom of the Opera” and to help raising funds for “The Actors Fund: COVID-19 Emergency Relief”, a live version of the musical that was performed in 2011 in the Royal Albert Hall will be available for free on YouTube for 24 hours in the UK and for 48 hours everywhere else.
“The Phantom of the Opera” is a British musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart. It opened in London’s West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988 and by 2011 had been seen by over 130 million people in 145 cities across 27 countries.
To watch the second most successful musical ever, go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZRBIbpYs6A
Thanks, Dave O’D for letting me know about this!

2) OPEN HOUSE DUBLIN
Open House is an amazing event in normal years. I call it the “Culture Night for people with an interest in the buildings around us”. Organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation it normally gives us a chance to discover normally inaccessible buildings on a guided tour and always gives great insights in the reasons behind building the building in the way we see it today.

One year I took part in a tour of Busaras and started really appreciating this not so much liked building. The same happened when Liberty Hall was properly explained to me. Last year I was lucky enough to get on the tour for the old Airport Terminal.

Fascinating experiences year after year! But as you can imagine, Open House 2020 will be different than in previous years.
Luckily it is still taking place, but most “tours” will be online. It will take place on 10+11 October.  Go to openhousedublin.com to find all online tours! There is also a “Open House Junior” if you have kids that need entertaining.

3) NETFLIX RECOMMENDATION
I don’t often get a chance to watch a movie or documentary, but this week I can recommend a brilliant one. ;-) It is called “My Octopus Teacher” and tells the story of diver Craig Foster who met and bonded for a whole year with a wild Octopus off the coast of South Africa. A fascinating story and well made film. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s0LTDhqe5A

4) OCTOBER IS REUSE MONTH
October is reuse month and the goal is to to raise awareness about the benefits of reusing everyday items and materials that would otherwise go to waste. There will be three events (two remaining) that give help and advise and you can put them already in your diary:
15 Oct: The Big Reuse Event Part 2 www.mywaste.ie/reuse-month-event/the-big-reuse-event-part-2/
22 Oct: The Big Reuse Event Part 3 www.mywaste.ie/reuse-month-event/the-big-reuse-event-part-3/

5) Online Courses – Special Offer
During the Covid lockdown, enrollments in Udemy courses increased by 425%! Wow! What did you learn during that time? In September most Udemy courses will cost between EUR 10.99 and 12.99 again. At some point in August the courses were even reduced to 9.99, but these things happen sometimes without advance warning. I checked though and in September and October there are no 9.99 discounts planned, so you better get the courses when you see form for between 10.99 and 12.99. Please use this link shor.by/GqCk because if you buy through that link, you help the Dublin Event Guide! ;-)

6) Books
A new free Book summary can be found here every week: readitfor.me/91927 Readitfor.me actually provides a number of weekly free book summaries and they also have a special offer at the moment still that will expire soon: For $99 you will get Lifetime access to ALL book summaries! This is a great price if you consider that their normal monthly charge is EUR 10, so in just 10 month you would have spent more than with the lifetime access.

To buy physical books and e-books I recommend Book Depository because they are usually cheaper than others and they always include delivery for free (and by using this link you help the Dublin Event Guide). Please don’t use any other links than the one below!! (Book Depository changed all their links and with the old one you don’t help the Dublin Event Guide.) With this link you do help the Dublin Event Guide when you purchase a book and it doesn’t cost you a cent: shor.by/BookDepository

And this is it for another week! Have a good weekend and new week.
Take care,

–Joerg
