A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is an indoor food/Farmer’s Market that many know from when it was located at Newmarket Square. Due to the redevelopment at Newmarket Square it had to move and is now on the Old Naas Road, opposite the entrance to the Royal Liver Retail Park. At the new location they are also open on Sundays.

Opening hours are Tue-Fri 12:00-19:00, Sat 09:30-16:00 and also Sunday 11:00-17:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Over three weekends (01+02 / 08+09 / 15+16 December) Farmleigh House will invite you and your children to their Christmas Programme.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-16:00. (Come early, though! It seems that traders already start packing up around 15:30.) You can reach the market from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The Teeling Whiskey Distillery will host a Christmas Craft Fair on 08 December.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

Áras an Uachtaráin is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th ‘occasional residence’ for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and/or advance booking is not possible.

The tours will be at 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 14:00 and 15:15 and take approx. 1 hour.

The Drumcondra Village Market is now the “Art, Bites, Crafts Drumcondra Market”. And as you guessed it, it is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. :-) There will also be some food and music.

The market is open on Saturday and Sunday from 10:30-15:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

There will be two curators’ talks about the exhibitions Lustre + InFLUX at Farmleigh House.

The exhibitions show the innovative work of Ireland’s newest goldsmithing and ceramic graduates of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s Centres of Excellence in Jewellery and Goldsmithing and in Ceramics in Kilkenny.

At the talks, learn the ins and outs of what is involved in making these intricate pieces and get the opportunity to have your questions answered by the exhibition curators and course managers during this informal talk.

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 13:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 11:00-18:00. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.

At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Market will open on 24 November and run until 23 December every Friday from 12:30-19:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00-19:00. The market area is not huge, it goes along the “Metals”, which is from the Dun Laoghaire’s MarineRoad near the City Hall (40 Foot Pub) towards the LexiCon library along the Queen’s Road, along the harbour.

There will be a number of stalls with art and craft and seasonal food. A Vintage Funfair with Ferris Wheel will run in parallel with the Christmas Market.

The “Greystones Art & Photography Exhibition” is inviting to a Christmas Market on 01+02+08+09+15+16+22+23 Dec from 11:00-17:00

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.

The opening times are 27 Nov-06 January: 11:00-18:00. (Closed on 25+26 Dec and 01 Jan)

The National Foodball Exhibition has been launched in Dublin and will be on show from 02-09 December and will then travel to seven other venues around Ireland until 2020 and will finally be in Dublin again in June 2020.

“The Exhibition is made up of six zones, with each zone designed to give you an overview of the various different aspects of football in Ireland, the impact this has around the country, some of your favourite and most memorable National and International moments and a look at some of the most iconic moments over the last 60 years of the EUROs. The zones will be made up of memorabilia displays and interactive stations with videos, quizzes and an opportunity to step up to the mic and record your own commentary.”

There is also an app for Android and iOS that will serve as an audio guide when you are at the exhibition.

I’d say this is a MUST GO exhibition for every fan of Irish Football!

St. Anne’s City Farm invites you to take a peek at the new city farm in St. Annes Park. There will be lots of festive fun and treats.

Admission is free. But please note that the farm is a small space and for the safety of the public and animals that when it is busy there may be a wait time to enter the farm. Dogs are not allowed on the farm with the exception of Guide dogs. Children must be supervised at all times. Feeding the animals is not allowed unless approved by a member of staff or part of a planned activity.

The Farm Entrance is just off All Saints Road (service entrace gate).

The Irish Finish Society is inviting to Finnish Christmas Carols and Bazaar in St. Finian’s Church.

The Lecture “Maria Edgeworth’s Private and Public Lives” with Dr Susan Manly will mark the 250 anniversary of Maria Edgeworth’s birth (1768-1849). Maria Edgeworth was one of the first writers to publish novels centring on Irish lives and social realities and her letters (around 1500 of which are archived in the NLI) give a vivid sense of her personal ambitions and motivations for her work.

Dr Susan Manly is the author of a forthcoming political biography of Maria Edgeworth.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?

+ Measure your Personal Space

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral not only has a boys choir, but also a girls choir. The girls perform every Saturday evening in the vigil mass at 18:00.

Santa is coming to the Botanic Gardens and your kids are invited to experience the magic of Christmas with a free visit to Santa and his helpers. The next Liffey Cycle will happen on Sunday and will be followed directly afterwards by a workshop about BusConnects. The cycle is to protest against the lack of progress that has been made on the long promised Liffey Cycle Route. The cycle will start in front of the Grand Canal Theatre and will also end there again.

The cycle will take approximately one hour and will be followed directly by a BusConnects workshop in a nearby venue. Everyone is welcome to come to the workshop where you will get some insights into the latest BusConnects designs and their potential impact on cycling in Dublin. Tea & Coffee will be provided.

The Mendicity Institution will run a Christmas market where they will sell handmade gifts and crafts made by Dublin’s homeless in the Mendicity workshop. All proceeds will go towards the provision of the Mendicity workshop.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space
+ A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The National Museum of Archaeology in Kildare Street invites you to a Medieval Pilgrimage. As you roam through the galleries, discover how people passed the time on dark evenings, feasted in winters past and kept themselves safe on long and dangerous journeys. Pick up a trail, make an amulet to take with you on your pilgrimage and chat with medieval craftsmen from Irish Arms.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. “From Barracks to Museum” is a tour to learn about the history of Collins Barracks, from the 1700s to the present day and its transition from Barracks to Museum, taking in some of the highlights from the military history or decorative arts exhibitions.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

During these workshops for 6+ year olds, they will explore paintings, sculpture and architectural features through discussion and drawing.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.

The National Gallery of Ireland Choir is inviting to a Pop-up performance of some Christmas songs on Wednesday in the Shaw Room.

The lecture “Wild plants in trade – Sustainable use or over exploitation?” will happen on Wednesday.

Thousands of plant species are traded internationally and used by people in their daily lives for food, health care, housing,
cosmetics or fashion. For the past three years, Dr Noeleen Smyth has been trying to determine which plants are being sustainably and legally harvested. Come and learn about how your purchasing decisions can help these plants survive.

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 13:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 11:00-18:00. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.

At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.

Floats in the Aether is a performance by Amanda Coogan in the National Gallery. The performance moves through the Gallery. The National Gallery of Ireland choir will also be part of this performance.

The performance will take place at three different times:

This is a tour of the exhibition “World War Ireland: Exploring the Irish Experience”. Find out about the Irish experience ‘over there’ and on the home front during WWI through the collections of letters, diaries, recruiting posters, newspaper reports, cartoons and leaflets.

WWIreland is at 2/3 Kildare Street, just next to the Alliance Francaise.

Floats in the Aether is a performance by Amanda Coogan in the National Gallery. The performance moves through the Gallery. The National Gallery of Ireland choir will also be part of this performance.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Make sure that you are there at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour to get one of the limited places.

The Little Museum of Dublin has a fascinating collection of artefacts from the last 100 years Dublin’s history.

On other days and other times, admission is EUR 10 for adults and admission is by guided tour only.

A Christmas Concert with the Firhouse Singers take place at Rathfarnham Castle.

At the Crystal Skull Session, a variety of acts perform at each heat and are randomly selected from an ancient skull who determines their faith. The crowd gets to vote for their favourite act to get through to the final with an epic grand prize to be won.

Every Thursday a Singer Songwriter/Open Mic Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The Woolshed Karaoke is happening every Thursday from 21:30. Anyone can participate! Admission is free.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

The Live Animal Crib at Mansion House is a yearly Christmas feature. It will be open until Christmas Eve and is brought to you in association with the Irish Farmers Association.

And just in case you are worried: The animals in the crib are brought there in the morning and brought back home in the evening, so they are looked after well.

Admission is free, but donations for the charity “Mansion House Fuel Fund” are appreciated.

The crib will be open from Wed 12 Dec until Sun 23 Dec from 11:00-17:00 and on 24 Dec from 11:00-13:00.

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.

To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the finding of the Ardagh Chalice, join this special tour exploring Ireland’s most famous and iconic object. Learn about the people of early medieval Ireland, the influence of the coming of Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century and how the Ardagh Chalice, among other fine metal objects, were made and designed.

Admission is free. Meet at Reception. Places allocated on a first come basis. Suitable for ages 7+.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

The MART Gallery Christmas Market will be in the Old Fire Station in Rathmines on 08+09 and from 13-16 December.

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Market will open on 24 November and run until 23 December every Friday from 12:30-19:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00-19:00. The market area is not huge, it goes along the “Metals”, which is from the Dun Laoghaire’s MarineRoad near the City Hall (40 Foot Pub) towards the LexiCon library along the Queen’s Road, along the harbour.

There will be a number of stalls with art and craft and seasonal food. A Vintage Funfair with Ferris Wheel will run in parallel with the Christmas Market.

A Christmas Craft Market is taking place in Temple Bar during the week (Thursday and Friday).

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 13:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 11:00-18:00. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.

At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.
