Dublin Event Guide 587: DUBLInternational, EUCYS, Oktoberfest, Culture Night

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The Dublin Fringe Festival is a theatre and performance festival for bolder, more innovative and sometimes very much “out there” ideas and approaches to art.

Most events are not free and the full schedule will be on the website below. But I was able to find a few performances and exhibitions and I will list them all below with links to the relevant pages on the Fringe Fest website.

A Dragon Boat Regatta is taking place in Grand Canal Dock. There is no programme or other events for an interested audience. but if you want to see a Dargon Boat Race, you can do that there. ;-)

Times are not clear, but it seems that the start time is on Saturday and Sunday morning around 09:30/10:00. Unfortuantely I couldn’t find anywhere how long the event goes on for. The Irish Dragon Boat website is surprisingly vague with all details (apart from the cost for participants!! But there are no cost for audience!)

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is an indoor food/Farmer’s Market that many know from when it was located at Newmarket Square. Due to the redevelopment at Newmarket Square it had to move and is now on the Old Naas Road, opposite the entrance to the Royal Liver Retail Park. At the new location they are also open on Sundays.

Opening hours are Tue-Fri 12:00-19:00, Sat 09:30-16:00 and also Sunday 11:00-17:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

The Dublin Anarchist Bookfair is a gathering of grassroots activists and campaign groups in Ireland. There will be a series of talks and workshops that are both interesting and useful to experienced campaigners and to everybody who is totally new to thinking about politics. There will also be a wide selection of stalls & books.

Admission is free.

European Union Competition for Young Scientists (EUCYS) will be in Dublin this year. EUCYS is a Science Competition and is open to all visitors between 10:00 and 16:00 on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. You can visit the stalls at which the competing Young Scientists present their research.
There are also Special Science Shows that you can attend and they take place in a 700 seater theatre at the following times:
Sat: 13:30-15:45, Sun 11:00-15:15, Mon 10:00-14:30 (Shows alternate and start every 45 minutes. The three shows are described via the website below.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

The exhibition will be open form 06 Sept and will run until 19 October.

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.

The former “SelfBuild & Improve Your Home Show” is now called “Selfbuild Live” and will take place from Fri 14 until Sun 16 Sept in the Citywest Hotel.

It is an exhibition and sales event for people who are building, extending, improving or decorating their home. There will be 250 exhibitors, advice talks, 1-to-1 clinics and panel discussions.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

The Terenure Bushy Park Market is taking place every weekk. The market has more than 30 stalls, offering a whole variety of foods and crafts.

Admission is free.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

Áras an Uachtaráin is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th ‘occasional residence’ for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and/or advance booking is not possible.

The tours will be at 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 14:00 and 15:15 and take approx. 1 hour.

The Drumcondra Village Market is now the “Art, Bites, Crafts Drumcondra Market”. And as you guessed it, it is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. :-) There will also be some food and music.

The market is open on Saturday and Sunday from 10:30-15:30.

Una Sealy is the Artist-in-Residence in the National Gallery and there will be a number of Open Studio events this week in the Millennium Wing Studio.

Una’s temporary studio in the Millennium Wing will be open to all visitors who want to see what she has been working on as part of her residency. Una will be there during the day to chat about her work and about the inspiration she has drawn from Roderic O’Conor and the Moderns exhibition.

The Open Studio events are:

Admission is free.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

Admission to the gallery and to most events is free.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The super popular Oktoberfest Dublin is back and will take place from Fri 14 Sept – Sat 06 Oct. If you like German Beer (Erdinger Beer), German Food (Bratwurst, Haxn (Pigs Knuckles)) and Bavarian Music (Eeek!) after 16:00, then this event is for you!

But be aware that opening times and admission charges have changed substantially again. It once was free, but now you have to pay to be allowed to go there and spend your money for beer and food. Odd, but there are still queues.

So here are the (weirdly complicated) new opening times and rules:
Free Admission: Tues+Wed: 12:00-23:30, Thurs: 12:00-20:00, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:00, Sun 12:30-16:00+17:00-22:30
NOT free: Thurs: 20:00-23:30 (EUR 8), Fri-Sat: 17:00-23:30 (EUR 12 with EUR 5 meal voucher)
Mondays the Oktoberfest is closed and Fri-Sun the fest is closed from 16:00-17:00

So the best advise is to go on Tuesday, Wednesday or Sunday.

At the Stephen’s Green end of Grafton Street an On-Street Fashion Show will take place in connection with the DublinTown Fashion Festival. The show will run from 12:30-12:45 and from 13:00-13:15.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). “The Life and Work of Margaret Stokes, Antiquarian and Artist” is a tour through the museum to visit the objects she studied and drew.

Margaret McNair Stokes was one of the leading female antiquarians of 19th century Ireland. She wrote extensively on the Early Christian art of Ireland, examining some of the most iconic objects now housed in the National Museum of Ireland, Archaeology, such as the Ardagh Chalice, ‘Tara’ Brooch and Cross of Cong.

The National Gallery invites to a Sketching Tour. Explore the Gallery’s collection and beautiful architecture on this sketching tour. Sketching is an intense and surprisingly relaxing way of appreciating all that the Gallery has to offer. No artistic ability required. All materials provided.

Admission is free.

Every Saturday a free guided tour will take place in the Chester Betty Library. The tour starts at 14:00.

In addition there is another free tour every Wednesday at 13:00 and one on Sundays at 15:00

Dublinternational was formerly known as the Blue Fire Street Festival. It is a World Cultures Arts Festival that is now in its 6th year.

Over 150 artists will perform in 10 zones and there will be World Music, Street Performers, Dance Demonstrations, Fencing Demonstration, Kids & Youth Workshops, Youth Talks and admission is free to all events.

Food stalls and a Craft Market will also be on Smithfield Plaza for you!

In Henry Street, at the junction with Liffey Street Upper, an On-Street Fashion Show will take place in connection with the DublinTown Fashion Festival. The show will run from 14:30-14:45 and from 15:00-15:15.

Would you like to get involved in a new adult choir with a difference? Join Dublin City Public Libraries Musician in Residence, Ríona Sally Hartman, as she leads the Pop-Up “Suffrage” choir for a rendition of her new song, written specially for the Festival of History in celebration of the 100th anniversary of votes for women. Following 3 weeks of rehearsals (Saturday 15, 22, 29 September from 14:30-16:00), the celebratory performance will take place in the foyer of Printworks, Dublin Castle on Saturday 6 October at 16:154.15pm, as part of the Dublin Festival of History.

Bobby & The Blunts With Guest Lucien & The Kimono Orchestra (Fra) will perform gigs in Sin E.

Bobby & The Blunts is a 4-Piece Power Funk Rock band who are influenced by Vulfpeck, Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as The Meters and other heavy hitting bands.

Lucien & The Kimono Orchestra is a 4-piece band from France. Luckily their music is better than their English description on the Sin E website. I wasn’t able to understand it. :-O

The Dublin Blues Cartel are playing a Blues gig in the Harbour Bar.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

Rock Tribunal will play a gig in the Porterhouse in Temple Bar.

The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. If I remember right, the fair is a right that is firmly written down in city laws. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting once) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.

It seems they couldn’t stop it or make it illegal, but they were able to limit the market to twice per year and so the highly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September. NORMALLY! This year the March fair had to be postponed to June because of the bad weather and for some reason, the September fair was also moved from the first Sunday to the 3rd Sunday.

Initially an attempt was made to add music, storytelling and other entertainment to the event so that the horse trading would be pushed in the background, but that didn’t work. So now it is back to horse trading as the main purpose.

Trader need to register with Dublin City and get a trading license for the day and with all these restrictions the market is definitely not what it was before. Traffic restrictions are on place as you can see on the website below and all the relevant authorities will most likely be present.

But did limiting the market to two per year solve the problem? Well, it is highly unlikely that the horse traders now only twice a year feel a need to sell and buy horses. So if they buy and sell more frequently then the trading happens elsewhere where the authorities can’t keep an eye on it. Consequently the problem might have gone away for Dublin, but if we don’t see it, it doesn’t mean it is not happening!

Now the big questions that people ask:
1) What is there to do?
2) I love animals. In the interest of the horses, should I go to the Horse Fair or stay away?

1) There is not much to do at the event, but you will see a good few horses and a horse fair is a bit of a spectacle.
2) Many have the concern that going to the Horse Fair would support bad treatment of animals because sellers and buyers at the fair have been found in the past to mistreat the horses and ponies. However, your attendance (or not) will not have any impact on the horse fair and will also not influence the sellers or buyers to treat the animals in any other way than they normally do. Because the authorities are expected to be there in big numbers the horse handlers are probably on their best behaviour anyway. So it is unlikely that your attendance or non-attendance will have any impact on the welfare of the animals.

So if you want to see what this is all about, don’t feel morally obliged to stay away. Going to Smithfield Plaza does not support the trading (or any sort of bad treatment) of animals.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

The National Botanic Gardens run “Kids Drop by Activities” on Sunday and Tuesday of this week.

There will be fun activities in the dedicated Children’s Garden. Sow seeds, make seed bombs, design bug hotels and re-use everyday items to create your own piece of eco art. Suitable from age 4. All children must bring their own grown up.

The event times are: 11:00, 11:30, 15:00, 15:30

Admission is free.

A Family Fun Day takes place in Cherrywood on Sunday. There will be Children’s Entertainment, Family Treasure Hunt, Picnic Area, Family Fun Area, Bouncy Castles, Ice Cream Van, Facepainting, Candyfloss & more. (There is also a 5k Charity Run but that is not free.)

Admission to the Family Fun Day is free. Check out the website below for parking instructions. A free shuttle bus will bring you to Tully Park.

Every Sunday (with a few exceptions) an art workshop takes place for children from 6-11 years of age. Admission is free and children must be accompanied by an adult.

The theme for the workshop this Sunday is “Biodiversity in Phoenix Park”.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

This week’s Drop-in family workshop is entitled “Make colours dance”. It will take place in the Maples and Calder Creative Space in the Atrium, where Beth O’Halloran will draw your attention to paintings of Breton women by Roderic O’Conor’s.

Every Sunday, the National Botanic Gardens invite to two guided walks. The first one is at 12:00 and the second one at 14:30.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The super popular Oktoberfest Dublin is back and will take place from Fri 14 Sept – Sat 06 Oct. If you like German Beer (Erdinger Beer), German Food (Bratwurst, Haxn (Pigs Knuckles)) and Bavarian Music (Eeek!) after 16:00, then this event is for you!

But be aware that opening times and admission charges have changed substantially again. It once was free, but now you have to pay to be allowed to go there and spend your money for beer and food. Odd, but there are still queues.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The animated movie Zootropolis will be screened in the Lecture Theatre.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known gospel choirs in Ireland will give you a chance to experience a mass with a difference. European Union Competition for Young Scientists (EUCYS) will be in Dublin this year. EUCYS is a Science Competition and is open to all visitors between 10:00 and 16:00 on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. You can visit the stalls at which the competing Young Scientists present their research.
There are also Special Science Shows that you can attend and they take place in a 700 seater theatre at the following times:

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

The exhibition will be open form 06 Sept and will run until 19 October.

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.

Talent Garden is a innovation platform and coworking network for digital innovation in 8 European countries and they just opened their campus in Dublin in DCU in Glasnevin. Florian Krobb, Professor of German Studies (Maynooth University), will be launching Dr Clemens Ruther’s new book “Habsburg’s Dark Continent”.

The book is about colonial fantasies and practices in Austria during the Habsburg imperial period in the long 19th century: within the literary texts of Kafka, Grillparzer, Altenberg and Kubin, but also in the socio-cultural reality of the occupation and administration of Bosnia-Hercegovina by the Double Monarchy, 1878-1918. The book is of interest to literary and cultural scholars as well as to historians.

“The Ordered Universe Project – Getting Hands-on with Medieval Science” is a lecture by Professor Giles E. M. Gasper (Durham University) and Dr Seb Falk (University of Cambridge).

“This lecture is part of the ‘Light Fantastic!: Robert Grosseteste’s De motu supercelestium, De motu corporali et luce, De cometis and De luce ‘ symposium, which involves the first visit by the Ordered Universe team to Ireland, which will explore three treatises, in which light plays the dominant role. The symposium features the final reading of the treatise De cometis – On Comets, and the second run-through of the De more corporali et luce – On Bodily Motion and Light. This last work presages the extraordinary boldness in the role given to light in the fabric of the universe of the De luce – On Light. One of the first treatises read by the Ordered Universe, ten years ago.”

“New perspectives on the Irish Revival?” is a talk in English and Irish by Cuan Ó Seireadáin, Curator, Conradh na Gaeilge about the background to the Revival of Irish and the sources which reveal this story.

A free guided tour will take place at the National War Memorial at Islandbridge every Wednesday at 14:00 from March until the end of October.

The tour will focus on World War I, in which nearly 50,000 Irish soldiers died. You will also hear about the main features of the gardens at this tour.

También la Lluvia (Even the Rain) (Director: Icíar Bollaín, (2010) 104 min) will be screened in the Pearse Street Library on Wednesday.

The film is about a director and a producer who decided to make a film about Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America. Because they have a small budget they shoot the film in Colombia where the privatization and sale of water to a multinational plant will blow up the Bolivian War of Water of 2000.

The Music Composition Centre invies you to the inaugural concertthe new Adjunct Music Professor Bill Dowdall.

In addition to his work at TCD, Bill is a soloist, chamber musician and teacher at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and he is currently recording Irish and New Zealand works for solo flute and flute and electronics.

The Dublin Jam Session is an open Jam with full back line. It is open to all levels of musicians and singers and all genres of music and the only rule is that you must jam with others (not all your own band).

It takes place every Wednesday and admission is free.

This is the inaugural meeting of the Right To Repair Campaign, a new movement in Ireland that wants to have legislation in place that we are all allowed to repair everything like software of cars, exchange mobile phone batteries, etc.

Interesting idea, but it’s not that we are NOT allowed to repair, the items are just too complex so that HOPEFULLY not everybody can re-programme their car software or – as in the case of mobile phone batteries – making the battery accessible means that the mobile phone has to be built differently, which would mean an increase in price (it always does). So it’s in an interesting idea, but I am not sure about its merit and benefit.

The Anseo Comedy Club takes place every Wednesday in Anseo (upstairs).

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

Sculpture in Context is back!! It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens. Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

The exhibition will be open form 06 Sept and will run until 19 October.

Admission is free and apart from seeing some very interesting sculptures, it is also fun to go on a “treasure hunt” for these sculptures which are sprinkled throughout the Botanic Gardens.

Every Thursday a free tour of Grangegorman Military Cemetery on Blackhorse Avenue takes place. Meet inside the cemetery gates.

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. It was first opened in 1876 to serve as a graveyard for the soldiers of what was then Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, and their families. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery’s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

Admission to the gallery and to most events is free.

The super popular Oktoberfest Dublin is back and will take place from Fri 14 Sept – Sat 06 Oct. If you like German Beer (Erdinger Beer), German Food (Bratwurst, Haxn (Pigs Knuckles)) and Bavarian Music (Eeek!) after 16:00, then this event is for you!

But be aware that opening times and admission charges have changed substantially again. It once was free, but now you have to pay to be allowed to go there and spend your money for beer and food. Odd, but there are still queues.

So here are the (weirdly complicated) new opening times and rules:
Free Admission: Tues+Wed: 12:00-23:30, Thurs: 12:00-20:00, Fri+Sat: 12:00-16:00, Sun 12:30-16:00+17:00-22:30

The Temple Bar Craft Market during the week is back and it has moved to Thursdays in 2018. Organised by the Temple Bar Company the market will bring handcrafted jewellery, wood design, handmade soaps, original art, photography, fashion, specialised cards and stained-glass crafts.

The market starts at 14:00 and finishes at 20:00, but is still carrying the totally nonsensical and completely misleading name “Temple Bar NIGHT Market”. I will just ignore this unsuitable and incorrect name and will rename it to “Temple Bar Craft Market”. ;-)

A weekly Jazz Club event with live band is taking place at J.W. Sweetman’s.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Make sure that you are there at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour to get one of the limited places.

“Destiny and Chance – How the Wiring of Our Brains Shapes Who We Are” is a talk by Kevin Mitchell (Assoc Professor of Genetics and Neuroscience).

Human nature is encoded in our DNA and it is that programming that makes our human brain. That program differs between people, which results in our indivdual natures. Even identical twins are not identical psychologically. Kevin Mitchell talks about how we are wired and why.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The Cemetery at Arbour Hill is the last resting place of 14 of the leaders of the 1916 Rising. Among those buried there are Pádraig Pearse, James Connolly and Thomas Clarke. This tour every Friday introduce the Cemetery and will also explain the background and the event of the Easter Rising.

Admission is free and no booking necessary. The meeting point is inside the cemetery gates.

One of the main locations for Culture Night in 2018 is Collins Barracks. RTE will take over the place and run lots of different events, most of which will be recorded. From 15:00-20:00 a variety of cultural events will take place and they will be listed here below.

From 20:00-22:00 RTE will invite to a concert in the courtyard of Collins Barracks. Last year the venue for this concert was the courtyard of Dublin Castle, which is – in my opinion – a MUCH more suitable location. The title of the “Women’s Suffrage Centenary Event” on is “Gold Air and the Blue”. This title is taken from the 1906 poem ‘Women’s Rights’ by Eva Gore-Booth. Diverse voices of women poets are at the heart of this special Culture Night celebration.

Leading contemporary poets will mark the centenary of women’s suffrage in Ireland and the rest of the world and will explore the role of women in today’s changing world.

The event will take place in the Seanad Chamber and has been organised in collaboration with the Houses of the Oireachtas and Poetry Ireland. Admission is free, but booking is required via educationarch@museum.ie or 01 6486 334.

Ireland’s Culture Night, the best event of the year, where everybody who takes part afterwards suggests that it should take place AT LEAST twice every year, will happen this coming Friday. On 21 Sept, from 17:00-22:00 (or 23:00), Dublin will be buzzing with cultural activities.

Museums, Galleries and all sorts of other cultural venues will be open in the evening and will run special programmes, concerts, performances. talks, Open Door events, exhibitions etc. It is an event you CAN NOT miss if you are interested in culture in the slightest.

There are hundreds of events in Dublin alone (the event is nationwide!) and some people find it difficult to get a handle of the day, so let me help you!

There are different strategies and I suggest you chose one of them or alternatively use a combination of them. One of the strategies involved using a Culture Night app that was available in 2016 and 2017, but that convenient way to find what is happening nearby and to even put a list of preferred events together is gone. What a pity!

1) Go to the Culture Night website and select what you like from the 360 (!!!) events in Dublin alone. (There is NO downloadable programme anymore unfortunately.) If you click on an event, you will be shown a description and more details. Above that description you can click on “Add to Trail” to add it to your events list for the night. At least some way to pre-select/short-list BUT don’t do the Trail selection at your Laptop and then expect that when you go out on Friday your Smartphone Browser will know the Trail UNLESS you have shared the Trail. (Click on See Your Trail and then select Share Your Trail)
But the handy map that shows you the locations is also not available anymore. :-O (I am still looking for the POSITIVE changes.) The list that you can print also is just an alphabetical list.

There is a free Shuttle Bus Service on four routes to help you get around. Details are in the events list under “Culture Night Bus Route A”

2) The first option requires meticulous planning. The second option uses creative drifting! ;-) You just go into the City Centre and follow your nose. Enjoy what you come across and don’t worry about what you might miss. But where should you start? Go to the events page and select Dublin. Now you will see “Refine Location” next to it select one of the areas and click on SEARCH. If you scroll through the search list and see plenty of events that interest you, then this might be a good area to start.

There will be hundreds of events and I will mention a few (but just a fraction of the total amount) here in the Dublin Event Guide.

If you wonder what I will do, this is my approach: I usually chose a combination of 1) and 2). This is a possibly trail: Start at Merrion Square. A number of buildings are open around Merrion Square. Then onwards to Kildare Street with the Alliance Francaise and the National Library and the Royal College of Physicians (look at their library). If you have never seen the Freemason’s Hall in Molesworth Street, join the super long (but usually relatively fast moving) queue. It is worth it! The Mansion House will also have guided tours and is always popular.
Now over to the Science Gallery or if you have never been, you can even join the queue for Trinity College and the Book of Kells (search for “The Old Library and the Book of Kells Exhibition”). And finally go to Temple Bar. On Meeting House Square there will be music and galleries in Temple Bar are also open.

All events are free. But some venues are so popular that there will be queues outside.

On Culture Night in the Hugh Lane Gallery there will be Speed tours; Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) discussions in front of selected artworks; artist-led workshops for families; creative writing for adults inspired by the collection; ‘Playing Up’ visitor performative interactions inspired by artworks and the gallery space.

To tie in with the current exhibitions “Curious Creatures: Frans Post and Brazil”, “Roderic O’Conor and the Moderns” and “[In]Visible: Irish Women Artists from the Archives”, the National Gallery we will be offering a range of Irish, French and Brazilian themed activities.

There will be Brazilian Samba and French bal-musette music. Free guided tours will run and the Gallery Café is open late. Children and families can take part in the Curious Creatures passport trail, in competitions, in a workshop in the Maples and Calder Creative Space.

At Culture Night 2018 all National Library locations across Dublin will be open and welcome your visit. The locations are the Main Building in 7 Kildare Street, the World War I exhibition in 2/3 Kildare Street, the National Photographic Archive at Meeting House Square and the Bank of Ireland Cultural and Heritage Centre in Westmoreland Street.

The Dublin Bach singers will perform from 20:00-21:30
A conversation salon will run from 19:00-21:30. Hosted by Heather Bourke, it is a informal café style gatherings that brings people together to have conversations about a whole range of topics.

+ 2/3 Kildare Street: World War Ireland: Exploring the Irish Experience – Learn about the unique aspects of the Irish WWI experience in this exhibition.

+ National Photographic Archive, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar: From Ballots to Bullets, Ireland 1918-1919 – This exhibition explores the intense events and the personal stories behind two momentous years of Irish history. Meet the exhibition curators to learn how period photographs, ephemera, and newspapers combine with modern audio-visual and hands-on activities to tell this exciting story.

+ Bank of Ireland Cultural and Heritage Centre, Westmoreland Street: ‘Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again’ Exhibition. “Curious Creatures at the Dead Zoo” is a Drop-in Activity at Culture Night.

Drop into the Discovery Zone to learn about curious creatures from South America, meet Museum Educators and touch skulls from the handling collection. This event is in collaboration with the National Gallery of Ireland’s exhibition “Curious Creatures: Franz Post and Brazil”

Ten years on from the financial crash and the bank guarantee, a multimedia exhibition will mark a decade of struggle and resistance in Ireland, showcasing the defiance and spirit of Irish grassroots activism, through photography, video and live performance.

The exhibition takes place in Liberty Hall Theatre as part of Culture Night and showcases work from Spectacle of Defiance and Hope, Paula Geraghty, Moira Murphy, Eamonn Crudden, Conor McCabe & many more.

The event includes a performance from the Resistance Choir at 18:30

The walking tour, led my Conor McCabe, will revisit key events and locations of the night of the bank guarantee and reflect on its impact. It will also be a journey through the reactions of the Irish people and the creative ways they organised against austerity.

The tour starts at 18:00 and will last 1 hour. The meeting point is Liberty Hall. Free tickets are available at culturenight.ie/event/financial-justice-ireland-tour/

On Culture Night, the Science Gallery is hosting the seminar “How Science Got Women Wrong” with Angela Saini, organised by Women in Research Ireland.

Science journalist and broadcaster Angela Saini will talk about controversial research and the gender wars in biology, psychology and anthropology and how the story of women is being rewritten. She will explore what this means for us as a society, revealing an alternative view of science in which women are included, rather than excluded.

A Q&A and a wine reception will follow the talk.

This event for Culture Night 2018 celebrates Trinity College Dublin’s special relationship with fantasy author, Terry Pratchett.

A library cataloguers will illustrate the evolution of Pratchett’s work; the Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation will look how Pratchett’s quirky sense of humour went global; a Children’s Literature expert will delve into Pratchett’s writing for young readers; the Trinity Centre for Digital Humanities will explore Pratchett’s work with technology; and, recalling Pratchett’s life with Alzheimer’s disease, a researcher from Trinity Brain Health and the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland will myth-bust dementia and explain how “It is possible to live well with dementia and write best-sellers ‘like wot I do’.”

Speakers will be Christoph Schmidt-Supprian, Jennifer Edmond, Jane Suzanne Carrol, Sabina Brennan and the Alzheimer Society of Irelan.

Cornucopia Café & Restaurant host live music three evenings a week (Thurs, Fri and Sat). The restaurant is a Wholefood & Vegetarian Restaurant and is open until 22:15.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet at the Martello Tower car park in Sandymount for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.

The event is weather dependent, so check www.irishastrosoc.org/events/events.htm after 18:00 on the night in the case of poor weather, to check if it is going ahead.

For the last few years, RTE organises a Open-Air Concert for Culture Night. The arts and culture show Arena on RTE Radio 1 is the host of the concert and there will be the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and guests presenting a mix of live music, theatre, comedy and poetry from both established and emerging Irish artists. The concert will also feature a choir of 140 members of the public from around the country.

For the last two years (maybe even more), this concert took place in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle. A great location for a concert like this and in a very convenient location for all the people that are enjoying Culture Night in the City centre. However, two years ago there were seemingly more crowd barriers to guide the expected masses, than there were people because it was a rainy night. Last year it was busy but by far not crowded.
But if a city centre location doesn’t get the people, then will Collins Barrack be a good place? The music style of the Arena Radio programme is not my preferred style, but I did enjoy some parts of the concert last year and the year before. This year I will not get to hear it, it’s just too far out when you are on foot.

Chief Keegan is an instrumental funk band from Dublin and they will be for a gig in Sin E.

Haiku will perform a Punk & Rock gig in the Harbour Bar.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.
