Hi all!

Today this edition of the Dublin Event Guide gets to you from the UK. I am away for a few days, but continued working here. A bit of a shame when you are in a quite nice hotel and you spend more time at the desk in the night than in the comfy bed, but I haven’t missed a single week in 531 weeks of Dublin Event Guide (That’s more than 10 years!!!), so why start now. :-P

[ad]

Heritage week is coming up and that means that if I included all events, I would have to send you two or three Dublin Event Guides. I won’t do that, so you will have to look up the Heritage Week events yourself, but all the links etc and SOME Heritage Week events are included below.

That’s all for this week, enjoy the week AND enjoy the fact (I hope you will!) that you get this Dublin Event Guide much earlier than in usual weeks! ;-)

Thanks for the support again last week. all your support counts! We are now down to just 20 Euro that are still needed before all the bills are paid for this month. Thanks soooo much! If you can help, please do and if it feels right to give a bit more, then I will use that money to pay part of next month’s bill, so no need to hold back. :-),You can help via PayPal here even if you only have a few Euro, everything counts!! I have also added another way for donations if you prefer to use your credit card via GoFundMe here.

And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or New Look or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!

++++++++

The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.

You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 72,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

+++++++++++

And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week I chose a quote for the Feel Good Slot that I came across by total coincidence. It is a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt (1984-1962), the wife of President Theodore Roosevelt. When I ooked into it, I found out that she was full of wise word! So I might present a few more of her ideas and suggestions to you, but let’ts start with this one this week:

Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product. – Eleanor Roosevelt

What did she want to say with that? I interpret it this way: Don’t strive for Happiness as the main thing you want to achieve/get. Instead achieve other things that are important to you and your happiness will happen naturally when these other things work out well.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

This week two essential donations came from Joanne M and Louise F!! Thank you so much! Your help is much needed and VERY much appreciated.

Without donations the Dublin Event Guide will not continue arriving in your Inbox every week! Your donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader, but no donations will eventually kill this resource for Dublin.

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend the Quays Festival and Heritage Week events will be a big focus. Then next week is PACKED with hundreds of Heritage Week events and next weekend the Dalkey Lobster Fest and the Harbour Roots Festival in Bray are worth your attention.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Dalkey Lobster Festival 2017

The good people from Dalkey aske me to tell you about their Lobster Festival that starts on Thursday 24 August and will run until Sunday 27 Aug. The two main components of the Dalkey Lobster Festival are good food and good music. The food has a distinct focus on Lobster and other seafood (prawns, crabs and mussels, etc), but with 20 eatieries in Dalkey, you will find lots of other food choices as well.

The music will be largely free gigs in pubs and restaurants and a list is on the Facebook Page, but there will also be (non-free) headline concert on Thursday in Dalkey Parish Church with Liam OMaonlaoi, Lisa Lambe and Simon Morgan (EUR 25).

On Saturday and Sunday Castle Street will be closed and twenty marquees will be set up. Kids will be looked after in the Kid’s Zone so that the whole family can ome out to Dalkey.

I will tell you more about the gigs at the weekend in the next Dublin Event Guide. In the meantime you can check out www.facebook.com/DalkeyLobsterFest

Heritage Week 2017

Heritage Week 2017 is taking place this week from Monday 19 August and it will run until Sunday 27 August. It is a nationwide event organised by the Heritage Council and this year’s theme is “It’s in Your Nature!” and with that, the focus is on natural heritage in 2017.

A huge proportion of the events is free and in Dublin and Dun Laoghaire there are hundreds of walks, workshops, guided tours, exhibitions, talks, performances and recitals. There are soo many that I can’t include them all, but I did my best to include a good number of them, but that good number was probably still less than 10%!! So the rest, you will have to check out in the guides below.

The downloadable PDF versions of the Event Guides for Heritage Week in Greater Dublin are here:
+ Dublin City
+ Dublin South
+ Dublin Fingal
+ Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown
Altogether you have more than 120 pages of events for this one week long festival. Unfortunately the Heritage Council still separates the events by boroughs, which is not very helpful and there is another problem. The last update to the PDF guides was made on 17 July. I am not 100% sure if you need a more up to date version of the events lists, but if you do then you rely on their search facility on the What’s On Page of the website and while the search options are good enough, the presentation of events afterwards with just 6 events per page is extremely cumbersome.

The full website is at www.heritageweek.ie/

Toll Bridge Charges: Up and Down

If you drive a car, you definitely will have heard of the West-Link and the East-Link toll bridges, The West-Link is on the M50 near Lucan and the East-Link connects Ringsend with the Point Village/Dublin Port area and brings you now to the M1 tunnel.

Back in the 1980s when they were built, Ireland was a LOT poorer and corruption was even more prevalent than later and so the Irish Government got a private company to build the bridges and gave them the right to charge the people using the road a toll on an ongoing basis.

It was a very profitable business and in the end the National Roads Authority (now called Transport Infrastructure Ireland) bought the West-Link Bridge in 2008 and Dublin City bought the East Link bridge in 2015 from the private companies. So now the bridges are NOT in private ownership anymore, instead they are now owned by the state / Dublin City and since WE are the state or the City, and it would make sense to stop charging a toll, but not so fast!!! Neither the Irish government nor Dublin City wanted to stop charging that extra tax on us, so we are still paying for something that already has been paid.

National Toll Road who originally built the West Link made a profit of more than EUR 1bn from it!!!! Read it here!

Dublin City tried to claim that removing the toll plaza at the East Link would be too expensive, therefore they had to keep it and had to continue charging money. A very ….unique…..argumentation.

In 2010 Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Dublin City were told that they will have to pay VAT to Revenue from the toll they charge. At the West-Link, back then the toll was not increased, but remained the same and TII paid the VAT from that amount. Dublin City on the other hand increased the toll by 21% (VAT was back then 21% and is now 23%).

TII went to court over the VAT and now the European Court of Justice has decided that VAT should NOT be paid to state-owned companies and immediately the PR spin started.

TII declared that they will leave the charges as they were because they absorbed the VAT when it was added to the toll price and didn’t increase the charges back then. There is some merit in that argument because on paper the toll stayed the same all the time, but commercial companies were able to claim the VAT back so they now have to pay more. In addition the question has to be asked how TII was able to absorb the VAT. If they didn’t need the 23% at that time and had no problem absorbing it then it looks like they just increased their profit margin by the 23%. In addition there is another little aspect that is normally overlooked: When the bridge was owned by the private company, they had to pay VAT, when then NRA took over in 2008, they didn’t have to pay VAT anymore before the 2010 ruling but they decided NOT to lower the toll, So strictly speaking the NRA NEVER absorbed the VAT ans therefore they are in essence INCREASING the toll now.

Dublin City on the other hand was even cheekier! They send out a press release claiming that they were lowering the toll charges! But they are not! Sure the charges are going down by the amount they had added a few years ago, but that was because they had to stop charging something that they were not allowed anymore to charge (i.e. VAT). So while the charges went down it was not at all oh-so-generous Dublin City that decided to lower the charges, they were TOLD to stop charging a VAT surcharge.

We don’t need to go to Washington DC to see how spin works! ;-)

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Fri 18 Aug

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2017.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

People’s Art Exhibition

11:00 – 17:00, Fri 18 Aug

St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2

Six times this year the “People’s Art 2017″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green.

(If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions.)

Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday.

People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

Ironman 70.3

07:00 – 17:00, Sun 20 Aug

Dublin (various locations)

Another Ironman 70.3, also known as a Half Ironman is taking place in Greater Dublin. The swim will take place in Dun Laoghaire, the cycle goes from Dun Laoghaire via Dublin City Centre to Kilcock and back to Phoenix Park, where the run will take place.

The “70.3” refers to the total distance in miles (113.0 km) covered in the race, consisting of a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride, and a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run.

Participation is unsurprisingly not free, it costs close to EUR 370 to take part! But watching the spectacle is free.

The best locations to watch the event are in Dun Laoghaire where the swim takes place and where you find the transition area and in Phoenix Park where the cycling finishes and the run takes place. The second transition area is near the papal cross in Phoenix Park.

Expect SEVERE traffic restrictions in Dun Laoghaire, Blackrock, Booterstown, Irishtown, along the Liffey and in Phoenix Park. Phoenix Park will be affected until 17:00, the rest until around 10:30.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 20 Aug

Rose of Tralee – TV Show Part 1

20:00 – 23:00, Mon 21 Aug

Dublin (various locations)

The “Rose of Tralee” is a live event that takes place in Tralee every year and the rest of us can watch a TV show over two (!!!) nights that introduces the participants of this competition and gives you a glimpse in the shenanigans of a Kerry based competition for a female representative.

If you grew up in Ireland you know the “Rose of Tralee” event well enough and you most likely have your own memories (good or bad) and your own opinion about it (depends possibly on your age). So this event notice is not really for people that grew up in Ireland. ;-)

But imagine if you never saw it before and didn’t grow up in Ireland, how would you describe this “thing”?

Well, I will try: There is a town in the west of Ireland, called Tralee, that for some reason 58 years ago decided that a young woman that has some tentative Irish roots and lives anywhere in the world should represent this town as their “Rose of Tralee”. All over the world, Irish communities run competitions and 63 young women will be sent to Tralee to compete against each other. The selection criteria is a mystery to anybody that will watch the show this week. They are usually not selected on their looks or talents or skills, but something has been seen in the 63. From these 63, 32 will make it into the TV show and then one will be selected based on similar incomprehensible criteria to become the Rose of Tralee.

During a TWO night, very long drawn out programme that is exciting for some (mainly the parents and grannies of the candidates) and is cringe-worthy for many others, presenter Dáithí Ó Sé will make meagre attempts of getting anything interesting out of the 32 and he will then also get them to show their bestest talent through performing a dance, sing or play an instrument. For years the emergency fall back if there were no other skills at all that would appeal to the viewers, was to recite a poem, but luckily that got ruled out in 2016.

There is another parallel universe story happening as well: The women might have partners but each and everyone of them is assigned a young guy as an “escort”. But get someone else to explain that to you. I will only tell you that 100s apply every year and 65 will be selected. And each of them has to raise EUR 1500 in sponsorship and they will have to be there for “their” Rose participant during the week. (www.thejournal.ie/rose-of-tralee-escort-shane-kenny-2932817-Aug2016/)

And by the way, the event takes place in the “Festival Dome”, which couldn’t be further from a dome than you could imagine. It is in fact a plastic marquee that the people from Kerry call “Dome” for unknown reasons.

58 years is this event running and shockingly you are part financing it through your TV license fee. Good use of your money!?

The show is broadcast live on RTE One TV for more than four long hours (3 hrs + 3hrs with a break in the middle for the 21:00 news). And to make sure that the rest of the world will not get away undamaged, you can also watch it worldwide on the RTE Player. Should you watch it? I think if you have never seen it before you should watch at least a small part of it. Just as a cultural experience thing. ;-)

“odd”, “Anachronistic” or even “boring” are some of the softer terms that opponents use, but the support in some quarters seems to be tremendous nevertheless.

National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9

The lecture “Plant Hunters in Petticoats – a history of Irish women in botany” is a talk by Charlotte Salter-Townshend.

“As part of National Heritage Week she will highlight the accomplishments of women who, despite the odds, blazed a trail in botany. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, it was deemed fitting for ladies to collect and depict natural objects. This allowed women to make significant contributions to natural science, despite general disadvantages in education, promotion and attire. Featured are Ellen Hutchins, Ireland’s first female botanist, Matilda Knowles, the first female curator of the National Herbarium and Lady Charlotte Wheeler-Cuffe, who collected plants in Burma. The talk will be illustrated with photographs, artwork and displays by the women discussed.”

National Heritage Week 2017

09:00, Fri 25 Aug

Dublin (various locations)

It is National Heritage Week 2017 from Monday 19 August until Sunday 27 August. There will be thousands of events nationwide and in Dublin you can expect a few hundred of them. Organiser is the Heritage Council and this year’s theme is “It’s in Your Nature!” with a focus on natural heritage.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Fri 25 Aug

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Senior gardai will get honesty lessons!?

The gardai in Ireland were part of more scandals in recent years than they should have been. There was the corruption that was revealed by whistleblower Seargant McCabe, then he was bullied and accused of a lot of things incorrectly. penalty points were deleted by guardai and more recently totally wrong and overexaggerated number of alcohol tests on Irish roads were published.

The amount of scandals are seriously worrying and something has to be done about it. But it is shocking nevertheless to see that the solution is to give lessons about the nine points of the Garda Ethics Code.

The Garda Ethics Code was launched seven months ago by Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald and was described as a “as a beacon to guide ethical behaviour in An Garda Síochána for years to come”.

It is clearly an example of “whatever you do is wrong”, because if nothing was done about the problem we would all shake our heads and complain. But when something is done, we also shake our head and complain. …just for different reasons.

My biggest question is if anybody really thinks a “Code of Ethics” will make a difference. A good, honest and upstanding Garda will be exactly that (good, honest and upstanding) before and after the training and why would he need that training?? And a dodgey and dishonest garda will not suddenly out of the blue repent and turn his life around and become honest. So, is that Code of Ethics just a joke? Pretendig to do something?

How did this make it into the news? The Office of Government Procurement is looking for a suitable provider who will give classes about the “Garda Code of Ethics” to 1000 gardai. That Code of Ethics is about upholding the laws, acting with honesty and integrity, speaking up and reporting any wrongdoing or corrupt, unethical or unprofessional behaviour of colleagues.

All topics seem to be exactly the traits that you expect as natural and minimum requirements for someone who is a gardai and it is not a good sign that all senior gardai need to be trained on it. It is also not a good sign that only the senior gardai will be trained. Is it expected that they will brief the rest OR are only senior gardai not honest YET OR is there no hope for the rest?

And why did it take seven months from launching this Code of Ethics until teaching the 1000 about it?

Quite odd this whole situation and definitely not what we would have thought our gardai to be.
