What a week! Last weekend I was at a seminar about book writing and decided to write a book for my “day job” business. I was at this event and suddenly inspiration “came over me” and I had a great idea about a book that should tremendously help our business. It is about telecommunications, so not at all events related, but I Might mention it to you at some point when it is finished.

This weekend the Dublin Port Riverfest from Saturday until Monday, the International Harbour Food Festival on Sunday and Monday are the main free events this weekend. During the week another “Free Wednesday” is coming up and the next Science Gallery exhibition will open. The Sanctuary (www.sanctuary.ie) is the not-for-profit organisation in the Stoneybatter/Smithfield area, that was founded by the well known Sr Stanislaus Kennedy. It was founded to “provide a reflective contemplative, beautiful place for people in the midst of our frantic busy, world” and regularly offers courses in the area of mindfulness and meditation, etc.
For Thursday 08 June they have organised a public talk by psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Rick Hanson from the Wellspring Institute for Neuroscience and Contemplative Wisdom in California (www.wisebrain.org ) . He will talk about “The Neuroscience of Lasting Happiness” and you will learn how the brain can be rewired for greater well-being and peace of mind. The evening will be introduced by Tony Bates, founder of Jigsaw.

Publishing of the Dublin Event Guide in stages!
Some of you might not have realised that recently I tried out a a new way of publishing the Dublin Event Guide and it seems to have some advantages: I am posting the full list of Saturday events as early as possible on Saturday and then add more events for the other days of the week. Only when all is finished I am sending the e-mail and also post the FULL Dublin Event Guide on the website.
The downside is that on Saturday evening you get a mail with events for Saturday. A bit nonsensical, I know but you would understand when you knew how the database system works for creating the Dublin Event Guide. The big upside is that you get ALL Saturday events on the website at www.dublineventguide.com already on Saturday morning because I focus on finishing that first.
It is still not ideal, but hopefully helps a little.

Bring an umbrella!!
The weather on this bank holiday weekend will unfortunately not continue with it’s shiny and warm disposition. There will be some rain on Saturday and Sunday (12:00-14:00) and thern there was a forecast for HEAVY rain for Monday, but it seems that disappeared again. Hurray! Nevertheless, if you plan to go to Bloom in Phoenix Park or to the other festivals that take place this weekend (Riverfest and Dun Laoghaire Harbour Food Festival) make sure that you consider the high probability for rain!
And the rest of the week? At least SOME rain every day!! With a possible exception on Thursday. Is the summer over already? It only started a few days ago on 01 June, but the weather gods need to to better to keep us happy. ;-)

Spring into Heritage 2017 – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown event programme
The “Spring into Heritage” programme in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is back and will consist of a series of free guided tours between 24 April and 18 June in a a whole range of heritage sites.
The sites included are The Oratory, James Joyce Tower and Museum, Dalkey Castle & Heritage Center, Marlay House, National Maritime Museum, Cabinteely House, Seapoint Martello Tower, Dun Laoghaire Harbour, Dublin Bay Biosphere Tour. Most tours happen on weekdays and at most venues there are two tours per week.

The exhibition presents work by sculptor John Ahearn, photographer Mandy O’Neill and painter Blaise Smith who have immersed themselves, often for extended periods of time, to create bodies of work that capture the rich and varied moods and lived experiences of Irish school life. The exhibition will also include new work produced in a collaborative project between filmmaker Kilian Waters, Draíocht Curator-in-Residence, Sharon Murphy and Room 13 Dublin 15.

Dublin Port Riverfest

This year’s Dublin Port Riverfest will take place from Saturday until Monday (03-05 June) along North Wall Quay on the Liffey from the Samuel Beckett Bridge to the Point Depot/3Arena.
There will be a activities and demonstrations on water and on land there is a food village, some street entertainment, circus and art workshops, talks and some fun rides. Along the Liffey are seven tall ships and you will be able to visit some of them for free. Free visits to the Jeanny Johnston tall ship are also provided.
The event starts at 12:00 every day and runs until 18:00. Watch out for the Thundercats Racing Displays (12:05+14:00+15:40+17:30) and the Water Rescue Demo (14:30).

Dublin Port Riverfest

This year’s Dublin Port Riverfest will take place from Saturday until Monday (03-05 June) along North Wall Quay on the Liffey from the Samuel Beckett Bridge to the Point Depot/3Arena.
There will be a activities and demonstrations on water and on land there is a food village, some street entertainment, circus and art workshops, talks and some fun rides. Along the Liffey are seven tall ships and you will be able to visit some of them for free. Free visits to the Jeanny Johnston tall ship are also provided.
The event starts at 12:00 every day and runs until 18:00. Watch out for the Thundercats Racing Displays (12:05+14:00+15:40+17:30) and the Water Rescue Demo (14:30).

Festina Lente Yearly Dog Show

Festina Lente is a not-for-profit organisation which provides occupational, learning and employment opportunities for people whose needs have not been met in mainstream services. They run for example Equestrian Training Programmes and work closely with Dog Training and Grooming company Wonder Paws.
On Monday the Festina Lente & Wonder Paws Dog Show will happen. There will be dog training, dog agility, dog shows, dog grooming, a BBQ and a Garden Plant Sale. The event notice below says that admission ot the gardens is free, but the “classes” are EUR for one and EUR 5 for two. It is not that clear what classes are, though. Are the different dog shows maybe “Classes”? In that case close to nothing would be free on that day. Or are classes real classes where something is taught? VHI Women’s Mini Marathon

With it’s 10km, the VHI Mini Marathon might be “mini” in distance in comparison to a full size marathon (42km), but it certainly is not a mini event. More than 35,000 women will take part and while taking part is not free, cheering the runners on is completely free and very much appreciated.
The run starts at 14:00, but this year it goes in the “wrong” direction. It starts in Fitzwilliam Street and goes to Leeson Street, then through Donnybrook to UCD, then down Nutley Lane, onwards to Merrion Road through Ballsbridge, taking a slight left at the Ballsbridge Inn Hotel and it finishes in Pembroke Road. The run doesn’t even come near Merrion Square or St. Stephen’s Green this year! So everything different as far as the route is concerned. Keep that in mind. A detailed map is here.
Race Number Collection is on Saturday (10:00-18:00) and Sunday (11:00-16:00) at the Woman’s World Show in RDS Simmonscourt.
The Mini Marathon is not a charity event, but many participants use it to raise money for their chosen charity. Men (and bicycles) are unfortunately not allowed.
There will be music and food stalls at Merrion Square, but the organisers tell me that only participants will get access to that area. Pity, because it would have been a nice venue to meet up with friends and families of participants, but I guess 35-40k of participants tricky enough to organise without even more to join them.
Good luck to every participant and well done for even making it to the starting line! Many many more weren’t even that brave. ;-)

This is a pre-concert event, an open rehearsal and conversation with Francesco Turrisi and the group Zahr, to give you a taste of the performance taking place on 07 June with Zahr, the ensemble created by pianist and accordionist Francesco Turrisi and percussionist Andrea Piccioni.
Focusing primarily on the influence that Arabic music has had in many countries touched by the Mediterranean Sea, the ensemble tries to combine Italian traditional music, jazz improvisation, Mediterranean music and early music. The performance features also Francesco Loccisano, a true virtuoso and innovator of the “chitarra battente”, an ancient metal strung guitar traditional to southern Italian regions.

Join a 2 hours “Wrzesinski Legacy Free Workshop” organised by All Together in Dignity Ireland (www.atdireland.ie) with the Irish Polish Society to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Jozef Wrzesinski and discover Wrzesinski’s life and his approach to Human Rights and ways of fighting poverty. The workshop will include a conversation based on quotes of Wrzesinski and a creative activity to prepare posters for next UN End Poverty Day (17 October 2017).
The workshop will be run in Polish and English.

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.
Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Rathfarnham Castle
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed some months ago and is sorely missed. There is a high risk that the Free Wednesday will be restricted further in coming months. Use it as long as it lasts.
As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

The Koto is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument made from Kiri wood. It has 13 strings that are usually strung over 13 movable bridges along the width of the instrument.

My experience is that the pre-launch description of the exhibition doesn’t help much, so you will have to wait until after Thursday before I can tell you what this new exhibition is all about.
The description at the moment says:
“Break out your old mix tapes, swing your way to melodic bliss or rock up to our NOISE STUDIO to make your own synth. SOUND CHECK will be a noisy cacophony that will make your hair stand on end and your stomach vibrate!
At SOUND CHECK, everyone can make music. Visitors will become performers alongside hackers, designers and scientists, inventing new instruments and collaborating to explore the outer edge of the sounds of the future.”
More details will follow next week. The exhibition will be open from 09 June until 24 September and admission is free.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

That’s not democratic! – Fine Gael Leadership Competition
After Enda Kenny stepped down (and he was nearly FORCED to step down because he made some nonsensical promises about his longevity in the role of party leader and Taoiseach), the leadership battle between Simon Coveney and Leo Varadkar commenced and on Friday was decision day. 10,000 party members, the 223 Fine Gael councillors and 73 senators and PDs (the Parliamentary Party) had an opportunity to vote.
Before the vote already 46 of the 73 members of the Parliamentary Party had declared their support for Leo Varadkar and only 21 for Simon Coveney, but among the 10,000 party members the preferences looked different! About 65% of the party members were supporting Coveney and only 35% were on Varadkar’s side.
But now the odd thing: This is a party in a Western country where you would expect the highest level of democracy and fairness. Right? Not so!!
Oddly, the 10,000 party members only have 25% of “weight” in the final decision, the FG councillors have 10% “weight”, which means that 73 men and women control 65% of the party. You could say that these 73 were elected by the members (and by non-members) and therefore have a double legitimisation. But it is still odd that ONE member of the Parliamentary Party has close to the same weight as nearly 400 party members.
Doesn’t sound very democratic, does it!?
In the end Leo Varadkar won just 35% of the party member votes, but he won 55% of the councillor votes and 70% of the votes from TDs and senators. In total he got 60% of the votes and therefore won.
