A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The IN SIGHT homelessness photography exhibition is on show on the railings of Stephens Green (opposite the Shelbourne) until Monday 12 Dec.

45 single-use Cameras were handed out to homeless people in Dublin and they got some training back in May. A good few of them gave the camera with their pictures back and now the exhibition of a selection of these pictures is on show on the railings of St. Stephen’s Green.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Not only Mansion House in Dawson Street, but also the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre is featuring their own crib with live animals. It will be available on the three pre-Christmas weekends in December.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The International Badminton Competition “FZ Forza Irish Open 2016” with more than 250 players from all over the world will take place from 07-10 December. Badminton Ireland didn’t do the best job in letting the world know, so I can only tell you about the last day of the competition.

It takes place in the new National Indoor Arena and admission is free.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Every year, Farmleigh House run a great Christmas at Farmleigh even for the whole family on the three weekends in December. The event will be on Saturday and on Sunday and admission is free.

The Forecourt at the Bank of Ireland on College Green will be the home of a “Designer Dublin Christmas Market” on Friday and Saturday.

Arts, Craft and Designer Products will be on sale.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon is free for the whole year! But with the year coming to an end, you better take the opportunity soon if you still haven’t been there!

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

A tenement is a substandard multi-family house in the city centre that is usually old and occupied by poor people and in Dublin families lived in tenements from the mid-19th century, throughout the 20th century and until the 1970s. Over 25,000 people were living in Dublin’s tenements in 1913.

In one location, in 14 Henrietta Street, the 1901 and 1911 census records indicate that 17 families totalling 100 people lived in this one house. And the one street was home to over 850 men, women and children at its most crowded.

We would call that today “3rd World Conditions” and it lasted in Ireland until the 1970s!!

Dublin City Council have now decided to develop 14 Henrietta Street into a museum to explain tenement life. The museum will open in 2017 and on Saturday people who grew up in tenement houses are invited to come to the Wood Quay venue between the Dublin City Council offices and Christ Church and tell their story and bring memorabilia like rent books, ration books, tableware, pictures & photographs, letters etc. The memorabilia will be recorded, photographed and given back.

“Remembering the Tenements Day” invites everybody who lived/grew up in Dublin’s tenements. Admission is obviously free.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

The 2nd Saturday Market is a regular monthly market and this month it will be full of Christmas. Art, craft and artisan food products will be there.

Christmas at CHQ is a small Christmas-themed market in the CHQ building with arts, crafts and food products.

It is not the successor of the George’s Dock CHristmas Market from previous years!

The market runs from Thursday until Sunday every week until Christmas.

Dun Laoghaire’s Christmas Festival is a small Christmas Market with a about 10 wooden huts along the “metals”, the area from Meadow and Byrne until LexIcon underneath the Pavilion theatre.

I have to admit that the PR sounded better than the real thing and I was a little disappointed when I went there. But considering that Dublin didn’t manage to organise just ONE outside stall, anything is better than nothing.

The market will be open from 26 Nov – 18 Dec on Fri+Sat+Sun 11:00-19:00 and then from 19 Dec – 23 Dec every day from 11:00-19:00.

The Live Animal Crib at Mansion House is a yearly Christmas feature. It will be open until Christmas Eve and is brought to you in association with the Irish Farmers Association.

And just in case you are worried: The animals in the crib are brought there in the morning and brought back home in the evening, so they are looked after well.

Admission is free, but donations for the charity “Mansion House Fuel Fund” are appreciated.

Poetry Ireland are running a Pop-Up Christmas Shop from Thursday 08 Dec until Saturday 10 Dec. There will be literary-related and creative gifts from some of the cultural organisations in Dublin 1 (e.g. Poetry Ireland, Irish Writers’ Centre, Irish Heritage Trust, Gate Theatre, Abbey THeatre and many more) and mulled wine will also be available.

Admission is free.

On Sat 10 Dec at 13:00, singer Lisa Lambe will perform.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

With over 100 stalls, this is one of the biggest Christmas Markets in Dublin. Not a Christmas Market in the traditional sense, but a Market for goods that people give as presents at Christmas.

It is indoors at Smithfield and runs over three days from Friday until Sunday.

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The Dublin Flea Market takes place every month in the Food Co-op, but once a year at Christmas, that place is much too small. For the second year the Dublin Christmas Flea Market takes place at the Point Village near the Gibson Hotel and the Point Theatre (aka 3 Arena).

More than 70 stalls will be there and the market runs from Friday until Sunday and by the way, at this time of the year it is not really a Flea Market at all, instead it is a full blown Christmas-themed market.

Admission is free.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

This week the Ha’Penny Market will be a Christmas Market.

Adam Hargreaves, the author and illustrator of the “Mr Men and Little Miss” books will be in Arnott’s for a meet and greet.

The Bernard Shaw Flea Market is a weekly market (every Saturday) with approx 16 stalls, music, pizzas from the Big Blue Bus and the Bernard Shaw Garden Bar. Expect vintage clothes, shoes, jewellery, art, records, bric-a-brac and more and DJs will provide the entertainment.

The “Great Outdoors” shop in Chatham Street is inviting to a Christmas Street Party this Saturday with music, large outdoor games, face painting, hot chocolate and a Santa Post Box. The Party starts at 13:00 and Santa will abseil from the top of Great Outdoors at 14:00. He will then be in his grotto to meet children of all ages until 15;00.

“No Spare Life: One Woman’s Journey Through Cancer” by Rosaleen Glennon. tells the story of the author from when was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 until today.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet in Clontarf on the seafront car park, on Clontarf Road, opposite the Clontarf Bus Garage for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.

The 18th LGBT Christmas Carol Service will take place on Saturday in the Unitarian Church. The Dublin’s G ay Men Chorus will sing and Ursula Halligan (Political Editor TV3) will speak. The concert starts at 20:00 and there will be Mince Pies and Mulled Wine at 21:15.

It seems that admission will be free, but a collection for the Unitarian Church will be done.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op and it is the Fusion Sundays Christmas Market.

It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month.

There is always a great atmosphere and I definitely recommend this monthly market.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The IN SIGHT homelessness photography exhibition is on show on the railings of Stephens Green (opposite the Shelbourne) until Monday 12 Dec.

45 single-use Cameras were handed out to homeless people in Dublin and they got some training back in May. A good few of them gave the camera with their pictures back and now the exhibition of a selection of these pictures is on show on the railings of St. Stephen’s Green.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Make sure that you are there at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour to get one of the limited places.

“Drawing Freely / Dessins en Liberté” is an exhibition of 12 panels of cartoons made by nearly 50 cartoonists from all around the world. Each panel addresses a specific topic linked to freedom of expression: censorship, internet, corruption, women’s rights, rebellions, racism, etc. All of the cartoons were published in local papers. The exhibition wants to illustrate how freedom of expression is exercised on all the continents.

On Thursday the launch will take place. Admission is free, but booking is required via the link here.

“Eavan Boland: Inside History” is a new volume of essays and poems in response to the work of Irish poet Eavan Boland.

“The volume includes critical essays on, and creative responses to, her work by leading writers, thinkers and scholars in Ireland, the UK, Europe and the US and reappraises Boland’s influence as a poet and critic for the 21st century.”

Eavan Boland and former president Mary Robinson will attend the launch.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

A live music open mic session, called “Keep on Trucking” takes place every Thursday in Peadar Brown’s Pub, it is presented by Joey Magic.

It is not the successor of the George’s Dock CHristmas Market from previous years!

The market runs from Thursday until Sunday every week until Christmas.

Dun Laoghaire’s Christmas Festival is a small Christmas Market with a about 10 wooden huts along the “metals”, the area from Meadow and Byrne until LexIcon underneath the Pavilion theatre.

I have to admit that the PR sounded better than the real thing and I was a little disappointed when I went there. But considering that Dublin didn’t manage to organise just ONE outside stall, anything is better than nothing.

The market will be open from 26 Nov – 18 Dec on Fri+Sat+Sun 11:00-19:00 and then from 19 Dec – 23 Dec every day from 11:00-19:00.

The Live Animal Crib at Mansion House is a yearly Christmas feature. It will be open until Christmas Eve and is brought to you in association with the Irish Farmers Association.

And just in case you are worried: The animals in the crib are brought there in the morning and brought back home in the evening, so they are looked after well.

The ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology in Trinity College invites to the lecture “Contextual Privacy and the Control of Information: An Account of the Socio-Technical Commitments of Blockchain Technologies” with cryptocurrency expert Quinn DuPont.

From Bitcoin to the recent development of “blockchain technologies”, privacy enhancement is often touted as a key feature of these new technologies. There is a sense in which the pseudonymous nature of transactions recorded on a decentralised public ledger (a “blockchain”) are somehow more private than many existing alternatives.

DuPont will look at Privacy and Control of Information aspects of these new cryptocurrencies.
