Hi all!

This week you will get what is probably the biggest Dublin Event Guide ever. There are soooo many events that I will have to publish it in the smart phone app and on the website first again and will then still add more events until all is covered. Only then I will send the e-mail version. It is not the perfect way to do it, but I think it is better than waiting until all is completed because then half of Saturday is already over.
[This is the final version with all events included. APOLOGIES for the crazy delay this week. It is getting worse and worse and I currently have no clue as to what to do to fix this problem. :-(( ]

[ad]

A huge junk of the events at the moment are 1916 talks. Some of them are really really interesting, but unfortunately some take place midday in a library far away. Pity that they are not all recorded and then made available as podcasts.

But if you are not that interested in history, there are still plenty of other things going on. Have a look!

And please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And secondly: without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good is a quote that strongly suggests that you find your own path. The source for the quote is unknown, but it is worth considering its message nevertheless:

If people don’t appreciate what you bring to the table.. then let them eat alone.

That doesn’t mean that you will always be right and your way is the absolutely right way, but you know that you can change what you bring to the table if you think some modifications are appropriate. It does mean, however, that you don’t let other people run your show, but you take control of what you bring to the table and when and how you change the goods that you bring!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Aine G, Donna M, Siobhan P, Susan B, Sharon K, Michele McN and Elena W were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

The Chinese New Year’s Festival Family Event “Spring Festival Fair” is definitely the top event with something in it for everyone. It will take place on Saturday and Sunday. On Tuesday the next Milk & Cookies Stories will happen. And throughout the week there are a vast amount of 1916 talks…and plenty of great gigs. Pick one of each maybe? ;-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Biggest Pub Merger in Irish history!?

This could be the biggest merger of pub companies in the Irish history: The Mercantile Group and the Capital Bars Group have announced that they plan to merge.

The Mercantile Group owns pubs and live music venues The Mercantile, Whelan’s, East Side Tavern, Opium, South William and restaurants The Green Hen, Pichet, Marcel’s, Le Petit Parisien and the Mercantile Hotel and the Lost Society night club.

The Capital Bars Group owns Café en Seine, Soder+Ko (formerly The Dragon), The George and Howl at the Moon.

As far as live music venues are concerned, the Mercantile Group wins hands down and with that in mind, it is a relieve that the new combined company will be the Mercantile Group, run by the same CEO that ran the Mercantile Group until now (Frank Gleeson). So we can hope that the recipe won’t change that much and live music still plays a big role.

Toys R Us – Gone after just 6 months!

´The plan was big! Five Toys R Us shops in Ireland in the first year and 10 shops over five years and when in October of last year the first two shops opened in Blanchardstown and in Limerick the franchisees were very bullish. But it seems the so important Christmas business didn’t go in their direction and now, just six months after the big plans, it all went down the gutter: Both shops are closed and the British arm of the company has appointed a receiver for the Irish sister.

Last chance: Voice your opinions about Busking in Dublin!!

If you have an opinion about busking in Dublin, don’t forget to voice this opinion in the context of the current consultation process. Until 12 February you can comment on the proposed revised Street Performers Bye-Laws and you should at least read them if you are interested in culture in Dublin!

The website for the consultation is here and the one that you want to read and comment on is the third document “The draft revised Bye-Laws with the proposed changes marked in red.

The rules are already quite strict, but Dublin City wants to make them even stricter.

Online Questionnaire for DBS student

Dónall McLoughlin, a Dublin Event Guide reader, contacted me and asked if we could help him a bit. He studies at the Dublin Business School and for his project in the Department of Psychology, he has created an online questionnaire looking at the meaning of life and life satisfaction.

If you can spare a few minutes (approx 5-10) for this research project, please fill out the anonymous questionnaire here.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE RECOMMENDS ==

In the next few weeks this section will be filled with information and help from Eventbrite that focuses on organisers of events. So if you are an event organiser for big or small events, watch this space!

And you can find lots of events at www.eventbrite.ie … or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident/artefact of their choice. Graphic Explorations in Print – Exhibition

10 Dec – February 2016

National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4

“Graphic Explorations in Print – 32 years of student work from Distillers Press, NCAD” is a showcase of work produced by graphic design students at Distillers Press from 1983 until present day.

Distillers Press, previously known as the graphic print workshop, had its origin at the National College of Art and Design’s original location on Kildare Street. In the 1980s when the Department of Visual Communication moved to the college’s new location on Thomas Street, the facility was expanded.

The Press now has a number of operational letterpress proofing presses and a large collection of metal and wooden type in a wide variety of fonts. It is used by students on a daily basis for creative projects and also as a teaching tool to introduce the fundamentals of typography. Ireland’s first practice-based Masters in the visual arts was undertaken at the Press in 1986; samples of this work can be viewed in the exhibition.

Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Super Bowl 50 – American Football Final

23:00, Sun 07 Feb

Dublin (various locations)

A few years ago, there was one or two places in town were you could watch the Super Bowl, the American Football final, live, then a few more switched their TVs on, but kicked people out of the pub when the game was only half over because they hadn’t checked how long an American Football Game will take.

All this has changed and in 2016, the list of pubs that is showing the game is longer than your arm. I still wouldn’t trust that all will show it until the end, so you better ask, but it got big!

Below is a list of the pubs that I was able to find that will definitely show Super Bowl 50 and do NOT charge an admission fee:

Xico (Baggot Street) – formerly The Baggot Inn
Sinnotts Bar (South King Street) – Super Bowl party of The South Dublin Panthers
Harry’s On the Green (South King Street)
McGrattan’s (Fitzwilliam Lane)
Trinity Bar (Dame Street)
DTWO (Harcourt Street)
The Woolshed Baa & Grill (Parnell Street) – Super Bowl Party of the Dublin Rhinos,
McSorley’s (Ranelagh)
The River Bar (O’Connell Bridge) – formerly Q Bar
Sam’s Bar (Dawson Street)
Porterhouse Central (Nassau Street)
The Portobello (South Richmond Street)
The Boar’s Head (Capel Street)
McGowans (Phibsboro)

Some pubs start their parties already at 21:00, others at 22:00, others just show the game and don’t party in any special way. The biggest crowd will probably be in the Woolshed Baa (they will definitely show the WHOLE game), but that also means you have to be really early to get it.

So, no reason to avoid pubs? Well, you can also watch it on BBC2 where it will be broadcast from 23:00-03:30. Chicken Wings made in your oven and beer from the off-licence. Not the worst alternative. ;-)

Few know that the first shots of the Rising were actually fired near Portlaoise and not in Dublin, or that both sides issued receipts: the Rebels for food, the British for handcuffs.

Loss and compensation after the 1916 Rising – Talk

18:30, Thu 11 Feb

Cabra Library, Navan Road, Dublin 7

“Loss and compensation in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising” is a talk by Dr. Daithí Ó Corráin (School of History & Geography, Dublin City University).

The most visible consequence of the Rising was the destruction of Sackville Street (O’Connell Street) and the adjoining thoroughfares. This resulted in significant material loss for the citizens and property owners of Dublin. Daithí Ó Corráin will explain why the British government accepted liability for the loss of property of all kinds from buildings, which required wholesale reconstruction, to personal items such as tools and jewellery. He will discuss the nature of the compensation process and offer an assessment of the material impact of this restitution on the city and its people.

Admission is free, but booking is required via 01-8691414 or cabralibrary@dublincity.ie

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Democracy? Not in Ireland!?

After a long wait and some unnecessary game playing by the Taoiseach who – oddly enough – is the one who is allowed to choose the date of a General Election, the date has finally be announced for Fri 26 February 2016.

From now until 10 March, Ireland will be without a parliament and any laws that were intended but didn’t get to completion will have to started anew when the new Dail (parliament) will be formed in March,

In the next three weeks, all parties will try to convince you that you should vote for them and if you talk to their representatives, they will tell you what they will do in Ireland if and when they are in power. But the surprise might be big – or at least it SHOULD be big – when people will NOT find the possibility to vote for a party on their ballot paper on election day. Instead, you can only vote for one of 3-5 people in Ireland (depending on the size of your constituency it will be 3,4 or 5).

So, what’s up with that?

Well, in Ireland you can only vote for an individual and then you are totally dependent on the moods, abilities and personal wants of this individual. If your representative, the person you have voted for, gets elected, he/she can do whatever he/she wants for the next 5 years and you have no control anymore. If your representative was a member of Party X and that’s why you voted for him/her, but a day after being elected he/she leaves that party and either becomes a an independent (automatically with no influence) or joins another party, you just got the opposite of what you wanted. And it gets worse: If you vote for a candidate that does not get elected, it is possible that your vote will have absolutely no influence on the future composition of the parliament.

This is quite undemocratic!

If you could vote for a party and separately for an individual of that party, the risk would be reduced, but as long as all depends on that individual you have no democratic choice.

It is shocking that this system is still in place and if this was a South American or African state that had such a screwed up system, we would demand their system to be changed!

It has happened numerous times in the past that a TD (member of parliament) was kicked out of his/her party or decided to leave that party over issues that were not even current at the last election. So you would have never had a chance to discuss this issues with the candidate and then decide if you still want to vote for him/her. But after he/she was kicked out or has left, now your intended vote for Party X is not supporting that Party anymore.

Unless you support a party because your father and grandfather did, most people decide who to vote for based on promises this party makes before the elections, but because you never were able to vote for a party, you have NO way in Ireland to decide for or against the programme of a party.

Look into it and you will be amazed about the oddness and undemocratic-ness (that word SHOULD exist! ;-) ) of this system!

If you are interested into further details, have a look at Michael Marsh’s 24-page document, published by the Department of Political Science at TCD. The paper in PDF format is here.
