Hi all!

Last week the Dublin Event Guide was sent at a more acceptable time, but today it went all the way back to the not-good-enough late sending. And it was a painful process this week. Apologies again for the lateness!

[ad]

The problem is not getting easier and I still find more and more free events every week. The first Dublin Event Guide had ONE event in it and was a mail to 10 friends. Now there are often more than 200 free events in the weekly newsletter and it goes out to 24,000+ people. But the process of creating the weekly compilation has not changed too much, just the time needed got longer and longer and longer.

Some substantial changes are needed and I am in the process of identifying the alternatives. Your input is always appreciated and you can reach me via dublineventguide@gmail.com

In the meantime, please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good slot is a quote form Albert Einstein. We know that he was quite good at some stuff, but he said of himself:

I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.

Be and stay passionately curious! We all were that as children but then some forget the skill later on in life. Be as curious as you were as a child and then stay like that for the rest of your life. It is that curiosity that keeps you learning and progressing all the time.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Elaine K, Emeline J, Melanie B and Eimear McG were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

I am soooooooo late this week, that I will have to leave the Picks this week to you! Very sorry about that!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Grab One closing

Grab One, the deals site has announced that they will be closing the business in the coming weeks and are not adding any new deals anymore. Existing vouchers and bought deals will remain valid until their expiry date but no new deals will be added. The company, which was owned by Independent News & Media and APN News & Media says that commercial reasons cause the closure.

This is another interesting signal regarding the future of Deals websites. Companies like Groupon and Living Social might be in a somewhat better position, but the good times are definitely over and the smaller companies are going first.

As long as they are still around, use the links for Groupon and Living Social here and with that you also help the Dublin Event Guide.

Dublin will NOT be the European Capital of Culture in 2020

It has been announced on Friday evening that the short listed cities for the European “Capital” of Culture 2020 bid will be Galway, Limerick and the 3 Sisters (Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford). Dublin was the only other contender and Dublin was eliminated from the competition.

A surprising decision? Not really! Dublin was an outsider from the beginning, This is not because Dublin is not suitable – we all know that culturally it is the ONLY (Bias Alarm! ;-) ) city of culture in Ireland – but because it has never happened before in the 30 year long City/Capital of Culture process that one city was selected twice and Dublin was already City of Culture in 1991. (In 1999 the European City of Culture was renamed to European Capital of Culture.) So it is fair that others get a chance.

Why are there three Irish cities in the shortlist? Because it had been decided that Ireland and Croatia will definitely be selected and then in these two countries cities have to compete with each other.

Here is the official Press Release.

David Hasselhoff ain’t no more!

No, don’t worry, he seems to be alive and kicking! It’s not that he went away THAT way, but there is no David Hasselhoff anymore nevertheless. Why? Because the person that once was called “David Hasselhoff” has changed his name to “David Hoff”. Odd that he does that at this stage of his life? You bet! But the artist formerly known as David Hasselhoff is a little different anyway. ;-) He said that he took the “hassle” out of his life…get it?

Why is this in Dublin News? Well, I guess it should be in Earth Shattering World News and there is no such section in the Dublin Event Guide, so I had to squeeze it into “Dublin News”. ;-)

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==

I didn’t get Eventbrites selection of events this week, but it should be back soon.

In the meantime you can find lots of events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

The Ark have challenged five Irish designers to create new products for children, taking inspiration from iconic children’s toys, furniture and textiles. The Design It exhibition recreates each designer’s individual studio giving us a glimpse at their working practices, using their sketches, photographs and working prototypes, to reveal how they get from an initial idea to the final product.

Admission is free and no booking is required.

The exhibition will be open every Saturday from 7 Nov – 16 Jan (closed Sat 26 Dec) from 10:00-17:00. It will also open on Sundays 22 Nov & 6, 13, 20 Dec from 12:00-16:00.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Tipping – Does it make sense?

I am talking here about giving a “tip” to a person that provided you with a service and it is an area that causes lots of confusion because we are totally inconsistent.

In the USA, the tips are a crucial component of a servers salary in restaurants as far as I understand, but I wonder if you also tip in McDonald’s or only in a diner/restaurant. If you only tip in some places (and the tips are high in the USA!) then you wonder how the other service providers manage to pay their employees a salary that doesn’t need tips.

In Ireland (and the most or even all of Europe) we don’t tip in the same way and to the same high amount as in the USA, but it is even more confusing.

I went to the UK for a few days last week and after finishing the Dublin Event Guide in the last minute I had to take a taxi to the airport to get the flight in time. The taxi driver was an independent business owner who owns his own car and is in control of his working hours. Would you give a tip? I wasn’t sure!

I then arrived at the airport and bought a newspaper. I didn’t even for a second consider to give a tip to the sales person in the newsagent. I also didn’t consider to tip the person checking my ticket at boarding or the Ryanair employees (including the pilot) on board of the plane. After arrival in the UK, I was brought to the terminal by a bus and the bus driver got nothing from me. Then I bought a train ticket and did not consider in the slightest to give a single extra penny to the sales person at the ticket desk. The train driver? No extra money! The coffee shop assistant got the exact amount of money and I didn’t wonder if I should have given her a few cent extra.

But as soon as I was in a taxi again for a short trip I was wondering what the right thing to do is. And had I gone to a restaurant in the evening, I would have definitely left some tip.

Total inconsistency and confusion. Why are taxi drivers or waiters and waitresses in a restaurant different? They provide a very good service, but why do we reward them and all the other people that do their jobs perfectly we don’t reward?

Odd, isn’t it!?
