Hi all!

First Friday the 13th, then Valentine’s Day and on Wednesday Ash Wednesday, that is SOME concoction of bad events, some will say. Others are less emotionally stressed by any of these days. For me the main event is that this is the 400th Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and to get it out to you in time is a challenge week after week.

[ad]

Friday the 13th is over and you are hopefully still ok. Valentine’s Day will go soon again, but the stress that it causes to people in and out of relationships is just unreal. It seems that nobody likes that day and would love to get rid of it, but no-one dares to suggest it. My suggestion is to do the same as I suggest to do with Friday the 13th. If it doesn’t affect you, just ignore it and DEFINITELY don’t let other people stress you. If you are in a relationship, do something nice and show your partner that you appreciate him/her. And if you are currently not in a relationship, do something nice and show yourself that you appreciate yourself!

Ohh and if you want to send me nice messages (not for Valentine’s Day but for reaching 400 editions! ;-) ) you can send them to dublineventguide@gmail.com

And remember, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) only exists because you told other people about it and because a few generous people support it with donations. Keep doing exactly that, please! Tell all your friends and family and colleagues about it and – if you can – please also help with a donation.

The Sponsorship I was able to get from some companies helps hugely to take a certain amount of financial pressure off me, but it is not enough. The cost are still above that AND I need some money to make some changes to the system that I use and need someone who is good at CakePHP programming and SQL databases. That will cost! So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 55,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Celebrating the 400th Dublin Event Guide, I have a special Feel Good Slot for you today. It is my most favourite clip that I found over the last 400 editions and it is called “Validation”. The clip is 16 minutes long, but it is worth it. Enjoy:

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Bill G, Catherine O’S and Lisa O’B were so great to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate all the help and keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend I am suggesting that you go to some of the Valentine’s events in Dublin City (from 13:00) and that you also put the new Science Gallery exhibition on your list. It is a good exhibition again. The Chinese New Year’s Festival is also this week with lots of events and it is Ash Wednesday, but that day has no impact on the events. ;-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Tourism Information Centre has moved

The Tourism Information Centre has moved from St. Andrews Church in Suffolk Street to a new location around the corner in 25 Suffolk Street (next to Pizza Hut). The new centre is definitely futuristic in look and feel and it doesn’t do it for me at all (see my opinion in the This is ODD! section), but hopefully it will appeal to the tourists.

St. Andrews Church is closed at the moment and will be renovated/re-organised and will then open as an exhibition space for the year-long Irish Design event ID2015. I am not sure if it will stay a Design Centre after 2015, but maybe it will focus on whatever is hot then in Dublin (City of Culture at some point again, City of Literature, etc.)

If you get a chance to have a look at the new Tourism Centre to form your own opinion about it, you should!

Chinese New Year’s Festival + Festival of Russian Culture + Mid-Term Break

This weekend both the Chinese New Year’s Festival and the Festival of Russian Culture start and this edition of the Dublin Event Guide lists some of the events during the week. If you would like to see the events for the two festivals separately, go to the Chinese Festival Page here and the Russian Festival Page here.

The schools are also closed for the Mid-Term Break and the National Gallery has a whole range of events for children/families to spend the time in a creative way. Check out the details on: www.nationalgallery.ie/whatson

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) would particularly like to bring to your attention. The vast majority of the events listed here will be free, but if it is a really good event, there might sometimes be a non-free event in the list as well.

== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==

PRO VALENTINE
Saturday is Valentine’s day, so unsurprisingly, there’s a good number of themed events vying for your attention, like Fitzsimons Valentine Date Night, a Valentine’s party in Spin Roller Disco, an Ice-Breaker Party at Howl at the Moon, and then there’s the Aroma Palace Cafe in Rathmines offering Electric Heart Beats, Aromatic Love Potions and tasty teas. (All these events have an admission charge.) You could even kick the day off with a free Disco Brunch at Drury Buildings, with fashion, relationship and health experts giving you advice on how to break-up and make-up.
NO VALENTINE
And if you can’t stand the thought of Valentine’s Day, fear not: Button and Coin will show the Ireland v France 6 nations match from 17:00 and will be having an anti-Valentines bash afterwards. There’ll be food and cocktails on the house and live music until late. Registration is free, but mandatory.

And you can find more events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Plant Places by Roisin Murphy

from Thurs 12 Feb

National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin

This exhibition is featuring watercolours and sketches by Roisin Murphy of the glasshouses of the National Botanic Gardens with particular attention to the work of the master iron founder Richard Turner (1798-1881).
Turner was highly sought after for his works with wrought and cast iron and glass. He is responsible for the iconic Curvilinear Range of glasshouses in Glasnevin as well as the glasshouses in the Winter Gardens in Regent’s Park, London and the Palm Houses in Belfast and The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
A series of walks will also take place telling the story of the rich architectural legacy that is in the Botanic Gardens and will highlight the extraordinary story of the Irish man Richard Turner who was part of the flourish of botanical architecture in Europe at that time. www.botanicgardens.ie/news/events.htm

Efforts and Ideals: Prints of the First World War

24 Sept 2014 – 22 Feb 2015

Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square North, Dublin 1

In 1917 the British Ministry of Information commissioned several well-known British artists to produce a series of images on different aspects of the war effort. The aim was to encourage a war-weary public and raise support for the war effort. The images illustrate some of the changing attitudes at the time such as the role of women in the war, the industry of war and the casualties of war.

The lithographs were divided into “Efforts” with nine artists producing six lithographs each on different aspects of the war effort, including Christopher Wynne Nevinson, William Rothenstein and Claude Shepperson. A further twelve artists were commissioned to produce a single image representing the “Ideals” for which the war was fought. These included Augustus John, Frank Brangwyn, George Clausen, Edmund Dulac, Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon.

Many of these artists are also represented in the collection of the Hugh Lane Gallery.

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

In his solo exhibition “A Voodoo free Phenomenon” for the Project Arts Centre, Garrett Phelan explores the power and influence that cultural traditions and artefacts have on the contemporary psyche.

Through the recollection of his own experience witnessing the winter solstice at Newgrange, and numerous visits to ancient sites throughout his life and travels, he questions the power such antiquated relics hold over us today.

Admission to the preview on 29 Jan and to the exhibition is free.

The exhibition will normally open from 11:00-20:00.

Welcome Disturbances – Group Exhibition

29 January – 11 April (Mon-Fri: 10:00-17:00, Sat: 10:00-18:00)

“Welcome Disturbances” is a group exhibition of new work by Cindy Cummings, David Stalling, Sofie Loscher, Maeve O’ Connor, Emma Finucan, Siobhan McDonald, Mark Cullen. It is curated by Sheena Barrett and Emer O’Boyle.

“The group exhibition shows the diverse practices of recipients of the UCD Science Artist in Residence Award. UCD Art in Science is a dynamic practice based programme that brings artists and scientists from undergraduate to professional levels, together in collaborative work. Since the pilot residency in 2012, the artists in residence have engaged with scientists in neuroscience, cognitive science, marine biology, plant biology, geophysics, paleobotany, advanced optical imaging, spectroscopy and astronomy. Their conversations have led to an inspiring body of work, through a mutual openness to communicating across the traditional boundaries of the disciplines. The diversity of the work reflects the open and dynamic nature of the project and includes, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, video and performances. We will also launch our programme of public events and publication to accompany the exhibition.”

A preview evening is on Thurs 29 Jan from 18:00-20:00. Admission is free.

Qingsong Wang – Everything is Possible – Exhibition+Talk

15:00, Sun 15 Feb

Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

Qingsong Wang’s large colour photographs provide an insider’s perspective on China’s transformation into a global economic superpower.

“Working like a film director with vast sets, Wang constructs elaborate, richly detailed scenarios involving a large cast of actors and many props. His approach combines a wealth of references to traditional Chinese art with a modern, cinematic scope. The resulting works are funny, sad, angry, perplexing and provocative – all at the same time.
“Everything is Possible” is the first showing of Wang’s work in Ireland. It features eight of his large-scale photo works, among them a new diptych completed only last year, as well as a video work which comments on the construction based economic boom in China. A series of short behind-the-scenes documentaries also give an insight into the artist’s production process.”

THe exhibition will run until 01 March.

On Sunday at 15:00, Qingsong Wang will be in the Gallery of Photography to talk to Tanya Kiang (curator, Gallery of Photography) about his exhibition.

Admission is free to talk and exhibition.

Bandits Live Comfortably in the Ruins – Talk

18:30, Wed 18 Feb

Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2

The next lecture in the “Making Ireland Lecture Series” is “Bandits Live Comfortably in the Ruins” by Visual Artist Sean Lynch.

I honestly am not sure what he is talking about because I don’t understand this:

“Ahead of his representation of Ireland at the 2015 Venice Biennale, visual artist Sean Lynch discusses the ideas and methodologies adopted in his installations and publications. Over the last decade, Lynch has explored the subjective layers of Irish history and offered alternative readings of the influences that shape society today. In his lecture, he will speak about the notional value of history as a social process and accumulation of knowledge. How can we, as a community facing continued neo-liberalisation, develop structures that can platform marginal and under-valued positions?”

Should you stay away from a talk if already the abstract goes over your head? Or is that an incentive to go and to understand the talk even if the abstract was too obstruse? Either way, it makes you wonder why an abstract is not just written so that everyone will understand it, because without a doubt that could be done here.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Dublin Tourism Information Centre: Welcome to sterile Dublin!

Last week a brand new Tourism Information Centre for Dublin was opened in 25 Suffolk Street and it is just perfect! It is perfect if you want to promote a sterile, futuristic, clean, untouchable Dublin OR if you want to sell Dublin to Designers or Apple bosses. If – on the other hand – you want to promote a warm, real, historic, atmospheric and enjoyable Dublin, one that you can cuddle and fall in love with, then the new Tourism Information Centre is a MASSIVE failure.

Gone is the lovely St. Andrews Church around the corner as the home of the centre. The former church will be renovated/converted to become an exhibition space for the year-long Design event ID2015. It could have done with some sprucing up, but it was definitely more atmospheric and capable to WARMLY welcome visitors than the new place.

Gone is also the shop that sells maps, tourist guide books and Irish souvenirs and gone are the counters were you could book tours and hotels etc in the past. There is a small desk in the corner of the new centre, but I am not sure if there will still be people helping with tourist enquiries and bookings.

Massive screens show you scenes of Dublin as if the city either had to be promoted to the visitors to the centre or as if they wanted to keep the visitors in the centre admiring the nice pictures instead of experiencing the real Dublin. Other screens show the events for today and tomorrow as listed on the visitdublin.ie website and then there is a screen that is meant to show all tweets that use the hashtag #LoveDublin, but it wasn’t really doing that when I was there,

You might have guessed that I am not impressed by the Centre, but don’t get me wrong, it is really nice and shiny. It is just a bad bad bad representation of our lovely Dublin. The Failte Ireland Press Release talks about “…combining high tech digital delivery with personal interaction and a warm Irish welcome…”, but there is unfortunately absolutely nothing warm about the place.

Failte Ireland, the National Tourism Development Authority, are in charge of the centre and Purcell Construction were doing the fit out for a sizeable EUR 660,000.

I suggest you have a look yourself when you are in the City Centre next time and then let me know your opinion: dublineventguide@gmail.com

P.S.: Somewhat separate but still connected: I have a big issue with the “What’s on” service of Failte Ireland, which fills two screens in the Information Centre. The issue is this: If a visitor goes to an official Tourism Information Centre, they expect that they get the ultimate and comprehensive information in that place. But – for a variety of reasons – the visitdublin.ie website, which delivers the events that are shown on the screens, is far from being comprehensive. The Information Centre should say that, but they don’t.

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
